Cruise trends 2014 Your ship has come in The Associated Press

NEW YORK — A couple of eye-popping new ships, the ever-growing popularity of river cruising, and efforts to restore consumer confidence are among the headlines in cruise news as 2014 unfolds.

But don’t expect ships to keep getting bigger. Instead, look for theme park-style attractions and new offerings in dining and entertainment.

The Caribbean remains the world’s most popular cruise destination, included on 37 percent of global cruise itineraries, followed by a 19 percent share for the Mediterranean.

More than two dozen cruise ships will launch in 2014 and 2015, but the race to make every vessel bigger than the last is subsiding from several years ago, when Royal Caribbean’s Allure and Oasis set records with capacities of more than 6,000 passengers apiece.

“I think the size of the ships — Allure and Oasis — is as big as it gets,” said Cruise Lines International Association president Christine Duffy in an interview. Instead, Duffy says, the new emphasis is “on more bells and whistles.”

Two of 2014’s new ships are sure to turn heads.

The colorful exterior of Norwegian Cruise Line’s ship Norwegian Getaway, which debuts this winter and will homeport in Miami, features a mermaid cavorting amid turquoise and yellow swirls.

Getaway will homeport in Miami and is a sister ship to Norwegian Breakaway, a New York-themed ship that debuted in 2013. Getaway carries 3,969 passengers, has 18 decks and two unique offerings: the Illusionarium, part restaurant, part magic show, and the “Grammy Experience at Sea,” with performances by Grammy winners and nominees, plus exhibits of Grammy-related artifacts.

Home Show set for Feb. 7-9 WATERLOO — The annual Eastern Iowa Home & Landscaping Show is Friday, Saturday and next Sunday at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center.

Homeowners will find ideas and products for projects ranging from paint, wallpaper, redecorating, refurnishing and remodeling to building, landscape and gardening. Nearly 200 home improvement and landscape exhibitors will be present.

Hours for the 63rd annual are 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Sunday.

Admission is $6 for adults and children under 12 are free.

Friday matinee admission is $4 from 3 to 5 p.m.

new ship of 2014 is Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas, with dazzling first-atsea attractions: simulated skydiving, bumper cars and an observation capsule called The North Star. The capsule, modeled on the London Eye, offers a bird’seye view 300 feet (91 meters) above the water. The ship debuts in November.

Meanwhile, the Mediterranean-based MSC Cruises company is hoping to win over Americans with its first U.S.-based ship, MSC Divina, which recently started sailing yearround from Miami to the Caribbean.

The cruise industry has had a rough few years, beginning with the January 2012 shipwreck of the Costa Concordia, which killed 32 people.

The bad news has continued with several mishaps, with passengers stranded at sea, ships towed back to port, cancelled trips and illnesses affecting passengers.

River cruises

Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor-in-chief of CruiseCritic.com, says river cruises are “just exploding with new ship launches by Viking, Uniworld, Avalon, AmaWaterways and others.”

Viking Cruises christened 10 new river ships last year and launches a dozen more this year. American Cruise Lines has commissioned four new riverboats.

And the newly refurbished American Empress makes its maiden voyage in April on the Pacific Northwest’s Columbia and Snake rivers.

River cruises are offered around the world, from the Danube to the Mississippi to the Yangtze, but Spencer Brown says this year’s “hot places to watch” include Myanmar and France’s Bordeaux region.

Cedar Valley Grows encourages involvement in garden project A gardening friend once made a c o m ment that has stayed with me.

It doesn’t take much to become a gardener, Melody just a few Parker seeds, some is a master basic tools gardener.

It’s the commitment a gardener to show up and get involved. It’s the best fertilizer, he believed. Multiply that involvement by a neighborhood, and you’ve got a community garden.

Cedar Valley Grows, a collaboration of partners whose goal is to develop and maintain a network of community gardens in the Cedar Valley, is encouraging neighborhoods, religious groups, service organizations and nonprofits to get involved.

A community information meeting is planned from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Cedar

Falls Recreation Center.

Information will be repeated from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 21 at Waterloo’s Cedar Valley SportsPlex. Applications are available at www.cedarvalleygrows.org. Submission deadline is March 14.

Four gardens will be awarded, two each in Cedar Falls and Waterloo. Black Hawk County/Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will offer classes and support for garden managers. The Blue Zones Project will provide seeds and tools.

Valley Coalition, University of Northern Iowa Center for Energy and Environmental Education, Iowa Northland Regional Council of Governments and the cities of Waterloo and Cedar Falls.

“A community garden makes some of the Blue Zones principles real and tangible — getting to know your neighbors, eating healthy and participation,” said coordinator Felicia Cass.

Historically, the social interaction aspect of community gardens has been as important as the produce.

Some of the first organized

community garden plots sprang up in Detroit in the 1890s.

During World War I, the government created a national program called the United States School Garden Army, “enlisting” millions of children, 50,000 teachers and thousands more volunteers to participate in garden projects.

C o m m u n i ty ga rd e n s helped feed the hungry and provided employment during the Great Depression. World War II Victory Gardens improved morale as well as provided food.

Along with Rubik’s cubes, smiley face stickers and hot pants, the 1970s ushered in a renewed interest in community gardening.

Urban gardens helped rebuild blighted communities and encouraged social networking.

Today’s community garden projects also improve the quality of life for people involved, promotes community development, encourages self-reliance, produces healthy harvests and can reduce food budgets.

What I came up with

Cedar Valley Derby Divas announce season home schedule WATERLOO — The Cedar Valley Derby Divas roller derby team the Push-Up Brawlers has announced its home bout spring/summer season schedule.

These hell-on-wheels ladies will roll into McElroy Auditorium through June for a series of hard-hitting bouts against Midwest roller rivals. Doors open at 6 p.m. with each bout starting at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are $8 and are available at Spicoli’s Bar & Grill, the National Cattle Congress box office and the Plaid Peacock, all in Waterloo. Tickets will be available at the door for $10. Kids 12 and younger get in free. One dollar from every ticket sold will go to the Relay for Life.

The Cedar Valley Derby Divas League is always looking for volunteers, referees and new recruits. New skaters will be accepted in March.

No experience is necessary to join.
