ow long would it take to condense thousands of years of history into a single exhibit? Fo r Ju l i e H u f f m a n klinowitz, a curator and collections manager with the Cedar Falls Historical Society, the answer is 16 months. That’s the amount of time it took her to put together “Before William Sturgis,” the latest exhibit at the Victorian Home & Carriage House Museum. The exhibit, which officially opened last week, documents the inhabitants of this area prior to 1845, when Sturgis settled in what is now Cedar Falls. To mark the opening of the exhibit, the Historical Society will hold an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday. The exhibit focuses on the history and culture of the Ioway, Sauk and Meskwaki Indians and features numerous artifacts from a variety of tribes, many on loan from the University of Northern Iowa Museums, the State Historical Museum of Iowa and the Office of the State Archeologist. “This is an opportunity (for people) to see things they would otherwise have to travel long distances to see,” said Karen Smith, Cedar Falls Historical Society executive director.

Hands-on children’s activities are available

From page 1 Huffman-klinowitz has gathered unique items such as a collection of arrowheads dating from the Early Paleoindian to Late Prehistoric periods, a reproduction of an act by the Iowa Fifth General Assembly allowing Meskwaki settlement, a flute carved by a Winnebago Indian as he was awaiting trial for murder, a headdress made from

porcupine quills and deer hair, several intricately beaded items and more. The exhibit also includes a one-fourth size wickiup replica. Wickiups were made from willow branches and cattail mats and served as the Indians’ winter homes. A full-sized wickiup could accommodate up to five people. Rita Congdon, education coordinator, organized children’s activities and crafts relating to the exhibit. Kids

can create a number of items including headbands, woven mats and paper canoes. A special section in the gift shop will offer items, mostly books about Indians, for children and adults, Smith said. Additionally, the history society has prepared a series of programming related to the exhibit including talks about traditional skills and native plants, the prairie ecosystem and Oneota archeology.

Engineering with Legos to be featured at Grout Museum Madness day WATERLOO — The Grout Museum of History and Sc i e n ce t h e B l u e d o r n Science Imaginarium will have a Museum Madness day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 22. At the Bluedorn Science I m a g i n a r i u m v i s i to rs will learn all about “Lego

Eng-ineering.” At this Museum Madness activity, participants will celebrate National Engineering Week with Legos. Visitors will explore the engineering process, learn and apply the scientific method and more. At the Grout Museum

of History and Science visitors can take part in “Military Engineering.” Visitors will learn who the Seabees are and how they can become a military engineer. Participants will build a toothpick bridge and newspaper fort, find out how much weight five

pieces of paper can hold, write a letter to a soldier, and support the troops by making a yellow ribbon to take home. The events are included with regular admission. Admission to the Grout Museum of H istory & Science is $10 for adults, $5 for veterans and children
