It will be as if they’re in the room with the characters on stage, watching them fight, make up and live their lives,” explains the UNI professor, veteran actor, playwright, author and now director and producer. Tracey also is editor of North American Review. “According to Chelsea” is a multi-layered comedydrama written by Tracey. It’s a love triangle involving a cultural critic, Wally, who lives in a world of movies and popular culture. Then a neighbor, Chelsea, disrupts his life. She has her own issues, including a quasiabusive relationship with a Byronic figure, Trevor. Wally and Chelsea strike up a friendship, but will it lead to something more? The story began as a short story about six years ago and has undergone several rewrites, including as a Christmas show. Tracey is pleased with its current incarnation as a relationship story. “My Macedonian grandfather had an expression — ‘If a door is closed in your face, open a window.’

Featured performers are local theater veterans Joe Frenna, Emily Eiseman, Gary “Bum” Baumgartner, Danny Katz and Michael Schlumbohm. “It’s quality writing and doing original material is really exciting, knowing I’m the first person to play this

character. Part of the challenge is how close I really am to the character,” says Frenna, who plays Wally. Frenna is familiar to metro-area audiences for over-the-top character portrayals, and he’s grateful for a role “that is grounded. It’s more an exploration of

myself. Grant talked about being enamoured of his own work at the start, and now he’s let go. His character is mine now, and I think he’s discovered things about the script that he didn’t realize before,” the actor says. Tracey laughs. “I was really loving my own words,

all about wonderful me, but now I don’t even think of myself as the playwright. These actors have inhabited the characters, taken over the play. It’s a collaborative process and transformative for me as an artist,” he explains. Eiseman identifies with

Chelsea. “The first time I read the script, I thought she has a lot of quirks, like I do. There’s real honesty to the story, and it’s not typical, but sort of a snapshot of real life,” she says. Performing in such small quarters makes her feel vulnerable, Eiseman admits. “When you’re on a big stage with lights in your eyes, you don’t have to look at people looking at you,” she says, laughing. As director, Tracey has urged his actors to “keep it simple, trust in the material and keep it honest. It’s a very funny show, but we’re approaching it more like a drama. I like complexities, and I want to bring that across to an audience.” Ultimately, Tracey would like to see the play performed as a full production, as well as publish the script. Theatre 40 Productions will also live on after “Chelsea” closes. “We want to do more original shows, smaller plays, just keep opening the windows and doing stuff that interests us.

TRIPOLI — When warm weather returns to Iowa, so do migrating birds. Some only stop by on their way further north. Every year Barb and Ken Roberson of Oelwein go to the Sweet Marsh state wildlife area to watch for migrating water fowl. This year, the couple experienced a new perspective at the marsh. They took kayaks onto the water to get a glimpse of birds there. “It’s a neat perspective from down on the water,” Barb Roberson said. The two had never been in kayaks on the water there before. Every spring, Darrin Siefken leads a series of excursions to Sweet Marsh to see the variety of waterfowl that come by there. “Sweet Marsh is one of the top 10 bird watching places in the state,” Siefken said.

The Robersons decided to try the excursion. The best part of the trip? “Making it out and coming back,” Barb joked. The trip they took April 22 started with paddlers spotting a lone cattle egret — a first for Siefken in the area. Later, paddlers came across a flock of pelicans. From a distance, the birds were difficult to see against the low evening sun. As the group paddled closer, the pelicans took flight and landed nearby in a photogenic display. For $5, people get a guided tour of the marsh for a chance to glimpse wildlife. People can rent a boat and get the tour for $10. Tours continue into midMay before vegetation and insects make paddling the waterway difficult.

The 3,000-acre wildlife area contains multiple habitats ideal for a variety of species. “You have the marsh, you have the woodlands, you have the streams and river,” he said. Some of the paddlers who go on the tours are firsttimers like the Robersons. Some, like Marge Shaffer and her friend Connie Schrupp, of Waverly, are regulars on the trips. “We love the outdoors,” Shaffer said. The Robersons said they were looking to try something new and will likely be back.

“We will be back out here — before the bugs come,” Ken Roberson said. The number and type of fowl change through the spring. Some species that don’t normally call Iowa home — hooded mergansers and gadwalls, for example — are spotted each year at the marsh. “There’s a different species there every week,” Siefken said.
