Science behind the games WATERLOO — The Bluedorn Science Imaginarium will present Weekly Wonders: Video Game Physics from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 6 through 9. How realistic are some of your favorite video games? Participants will put their favorite video game heroes to the test while learning about physics. How fast are these virtual characters really moving? Is it really possible to leap over a huge canyon? Compare the results to some classic video games and see how closely they follow the laws of physics and how superhuman some classic characters actually are. This event is included with regular admission: $5 for adults, $5 for children 4-13 and $2.50 for veterans and active duty military. Children 3 and under, Grout Museum members and Summer Explorer Ticket holders are free. For more information, call 234-6357 or visit www.GroutMuseumDistrict.org.
JOHN MOLSEED / Courier Staff Writer
Chris Hussey, author of “Games’ Most Wanted” with his new book and his favorite hobby.
Waterloo man pens a book about gaming By JOHN MOLSEED john.molseed@wcfcourier.com
WATERLOO — Chris Hussey admits he once suffered from “gamer shame.” An avid role-playing game player, Hussey is now not only open about his favorite hobby, but has become a vocal advocate of gaming. Hussey is a co-author of a new book, “Gamers’ Most Wanted,” along with Ben Rome. The book covers a wide variety of gaming genres, culture and codes. Hussey got his first table-top “Dungeons and Dragons” roleplaying game as a Christmas present when he was in third grade.
Thirty years later, he still plays multiple games, co-hosts “Fear the Boot,” a gaming podcast, and is a published author on the subject. Although current pop culture has recently come to embrace geek interests, Hussey’s open support of gaming came from a realization that gaming has benefits. “It’s a very easy way for those introverted kids to make friends,” he said. “As a social experience and a hobby, it’s one of the most affordable experiences you can have. It can also be one of the most rewarding social experiences.” Once he realized those benefits, his gamer shame faded. “I didn’t mind it,” he said. “In a
way, I kind of became an advocate.” “Gamers’ Most wanted,” published by Potomac books of Virginia, features 37 chapters, each broken into lists. It offers broad information on games and gaming. Hussey likens it to a top-10 list, and, like any such list, he knows his choices are subjective. “I’m prepared to hear people say, ‘you forgot this,’ or, ‘how could this be number seven, it should be number four,’” he said. Experts on certain games may not learn anything new about their favorite pastimes, but will likely learn about something similar. “We maintain a broad appeal,” Hussey said “But we try to include
information that gamers will find interesting or didn’t know.” The book’s broad coverage will also help gaming novices gain an understanding of role-playing games, video games, movies based on games and other various topics. However, Hussey notes few people are true gaming novices anymore. “Video games helped that,” he said. “People who would have picked on gamers years ago play them now, too.” The book also dovetails with another one of Hussey’s interests — introducing people to new games.

‘Dogtripping’ will make you laugh out loud By KIM CURTIS Associated Press
When was the last time you laughed out loud? When is the last time you cried tears of genuine sadness? When was the last time you did both while reading a 260-page memoir? David Rosenfelt, who is best known for a series of mystery novels, has written a book-length love letter to his canine companions through the years. “Dogtripping: 25 Rescues, 11 Volunteers, and 3 RVs on Our Canine CrossCountry Adventure” is a delightful romp through his adventures — and misadventures — running a dog rescue along with his wife, Debbie, out of their Southern California home and their crosscountry move. As a dog lover, it’s hard to know whether his stories will resonate with those less fond of his furry four-legged friends, but because Rosenfelt very well could be the funniest American author alive today, it’s certainly worth a try. He’s charming, likable, self-deprecating, self-aware and utterly hysterical. Be careful where you read this one because you could invoke serious stares from strangers who may think you’ve lost your mind. On the cleanliness of the hotel rooms he wants to reserve with 25 — mostly big — dogs during their road trip from California to Maine: “I hadn’t done the math, but I was pretty sure that we would be traveling with well over a ton of dog, so the cleaning deposit would probably be the GDP of a third-world country.” On the bedroom he shares with his wife and a halfdozen dogs: “The noises ... are unbelievable. Between the snoring, and the scratching, the collars jiggling, and all the other weird noises, it sounds like a jungle in Zaire.” If it’s been too long since you enjoyed a funny, sweet, romantic tale, read this book.

Cool, refreshing beef and mango salad is substantial meal By J.M. HIRSCH AP Food Editor
Like so many kids, my 8-year-old son is no fan of green vegetables. Or at least that’s what he moans any time I insist he force down yet more salad at dinner. So recently, I decided to blow his mind. I decided to create a salad he would love. A salad that didn’t immediately trigger eye rolls and complaints. It ended up being easier than I thought. Step No. 1: Ditch the greens. I’m not saying the kid gets a free pass on having to eat leafy greens. But for this salad, we’d give them a break.

Step No. 2: Start with something he loves. For my boy that means steak. He’d live on it if he could. As a result, we tend to always have some variety of steak kicking around, often a lean and flavor-
ful bison steak or flank or something of that nature. And since this is a cold salad, leftover steak from last night’s barbecue is just perfect. Step No. 3: Pair it with something fresh, something that has some acid and sugar to cut through the meatiness. In this case, fresh mango. But strawberries, diced apples, even sliced peaches would work, too. With the heavy lifting done, building the rest of the salad was simple. I diced radishes and red onion (super finely diced to make them less objectionable to the little guy) and added some chopped cucumber (the one green vegetable he says is not

do give gamers the spotlight, they can also make gamers the butt of the joke. Now that the book, which took four years to complete, is out, Hussey is turning his attention to other gamingrelated projects, including a web series, “Table Tales.” The series will combine his love of
television production and gaming, he said. He plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the series. Information on that can be found on Facebook at “Table Tales.” “Games’ Most Wanted” is available on Amazon.com and at eastern Iowa Barnes & Noble stores.

Homemade fruit leather tastes great The Associated Press
All you need to make your own leather is a blender, an oven and about 20 minutes of prep time. Edible leathers do need one to three hours to dehydrate — the thicker the layer of puree, the longer it takes to dry — but you can do other things while they sit in the oven. For these recipes, timing is not critical. Xanthan gum, which you can ďŹ nd in the baking ingredients aisle of bigger grocers, performs more consistently. Xanthan is a natural product fermented from sugars.
Freeze cocktails on a stick for grown-up treat McClatchy Newspapers
In the wake of the craft cocktail movement, could poptails be far behind? Poptails (Octopus, $12.99), written by London-based food stylist Laura Fyfe, is the clever name for tipsy adult ice pops infused with a jigger of booze. “You have to go easy,â€? Fyfe said about the amount of alcohol used to spike each recipe, “but they still have quite a kick.â€? Indeed, it’s a delicate ratio. Still, Fyfe’s ice pops are saucy even though they have only 4 tablespoons of alcohol per recipe. “Freezing dulls the avors of the ingredient, so the alcohol tastes stronger than if you mixed it in a glass,â€? she said. She always uses traditional wooden sticks. “Wooden sticks are much better because they hold and offer a bit more friction.â€? She also advises dipping the molds in hot water to help get just enough melt to loosen the ice pop. And remember: If your poptail fails, there’s no reason not to slurp it up as a snow cone or slush instead.

Sweet Raspberry Leather 4 servings 2 cups raspberries 1 tablespoon cooking oil 1/4 cup sugar 3/16 teaspoon xanthan gum Arrange 11-by-17-inch nonstick silicone mat on a rimmed baking sheet. Heat food dehydrator to 150 F, or set your oven to its lowest temperature. Combine all ingredients in a blender, then puree until thoroughly blended, at least 30 seconds. Working quickly, pour puree onto mat and use an offset spatula or other long, at utensil to spread it into an even layer 1/16 inch thick. If puree sits too long in the blender it may set into a custard-like gel; if that happens, blend it again until it becomes uid enough that you can spread it easily across mat. Place baking sheet in dehydrator or oven, and dry until leathery and tacky to touch. A drying time of 1-1/2 to 2 hours is typical, but time required can vary considerably depending on the thickness and wetness of the puree layer, the temperature of chamber, and humidity of the air. Use the convection setting on your oven if one is available. When leather is done, peel it gently from mat and use scissors to trim it to individual serving sizes; for use as a garnish, cut it into long, thin strips. To store leather pieces, roll them individually in waxed paper and then in plastic wrap. The leather will keep for a week when packaged this way.

Serving Our Community’s Families For Over 28 Years What parents are saying about SonRise: We are extremely pleased with the quality care and education which both of our children and now our granddaughter received at SonRise. The staff is extremely dedicated and competent. We highly recommend SonRise to provide a high quality education to the children of our community. Jay & Candi Nardini For the last 12 years it has been an awesome blessing to have my 3 kids in a Christion school! What an awesome miracle SonRise has been to our family. My kids have grown up at SonRise, spiritually, mentally, and socially thanks to the hand of God and so many wonderful Christian teachers. SonRise has made an incredible impact on my children and family that it will last forever! Brain & Tish Jacobsen My daughter came to DayCare terrified. Her first day we both cried! Two days later - no tears! After 1 year of DayCare & preschool at SonRise, she is a confident, outgoing, talkative child. The teachers care about the kids and show God to them though each day. This is the best DayCare and school, and such a reasonable price! SonRise has been a gift of God to our family. Tom & Shanda Knight

Covenant program guards babies from whooping cough By LINH TA linh.ta@wcfcourier.com
WATERLOO — After giving birth to a beautiful baby girl, Amanda Kalb wanted to ensure the newest member of her family was well protected. That’s why, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Kalb and her husband, Joshua, decided to receive a pertussis booster vaccine, an immunization that protects against whooping cough. “I work with little kids, so I know what it’s like,” Kalb said. The Family Birth Center at Covenant began a new program called “Cocooning” on July 1. Through the program, family members and others who provide care or interact daily with a newborn can receive a pertussis booster vaccine. The idea is that by protecting themselves from whooping cough, they’ll also protect the babies from the virus. “We’re making a cocoon around that baby to protect it from pertussis,” said Suzanne Bellinger, clinical nurse specialist at Covenant. “It can be fatal for babies.” In 2012, there were 1,700 reported cases of whooping cough in Iowa, according to Bellinger. That’s a huge upswing from 2011, when only 232 cases were reported. At Covenant, providing the vaccine is especially important for people who may not visit the doctor routinely or are uninsured, Bellinger said. For people who are uninsured or receive Medicaid, they may receive the vaccine free of charge through a grant fund. “Since we do deal with a

Covenant Medical Center hopes to curb the number of infants contracting the virus. younger child-bearing population, it gives us access to people that don’t see a doctor on a routine basis,” Bellinger said. “We’re catching that part of the population that maybe would be at risk of not having upto-date immunization or vaccination.” The vaccine is offered right after the mother gives birth, which saves family members a return trip to the hospital. “In adults, it shows up as a naggy cough, but that’s just enough for them to pass that on to that baby,” Bellinger said. “It’s awful to hear a baby that has that.” The day after Kalb gave birth, she was able to easily receive the shot. And as for the pain of receiving the vaccine? “I wish everything else felt like that yesterday,” Kalb said.

Whooping cough Whooping cough, also called pertussis, is a virus that can cause serious illness in infants, children and adults. The disease starts like the common cold, with runny nose or congestion, sneezing, and maybe mild cough or fever. But after one to two weeks, severe coughing can begin. Unlike the common cold, pertussis can become a series of coughing fits that continues for weeks. It can cause repeated, violent and rapid coughing until the air is gone from the lungs and you are forced to inhale with a loud whooping sound. Pertussis is most severe for babies; about half of infants younger than 1 year old who get the disease need treatment in the hospital. About 1 in 4 hospitalized infants with pertussis get pneumonia, and about two thirds will have slowed or stopped breathing. Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
