Wicked recipes Thrill Halloween guests with easy dessert, hard cider ALAN SIMMER alan.simmer@wcfcourier.com
Last Halloween, I went to a party at a friend’s house, as you do. The hostess had prepared a beverage, a mix of cider, cinnamon and booze that was ohso-seasonal and perfectly festive. I helped myself to a Alan Simmer mug full. Here’s one is a Courier of my dirty Copy Editor. Contact him at little secrets: alan.simmer@ I’m a thirsty wcfcourier.com. b o y, s o I don’t pace well. Put a glass of liquid in front of me, and it will be emptied. Normally this isn’t a
problem; I can moderate by spacing out the time between the drinks. On this occasion, it turns out the star of the lovely cider drink was a quart of Everclear. The 151 proof grain alcohol. It wasn’t until later I learned the recipe was originally for shots. I’d downed about five of them — each with double the normal alcohol content — in the span of two minutes or so on an empty stomach. I quickly found myself laying on the floor, my hot, hot cheek pressed against the cool surface as I savored the chilly breeze blowing in through a door I’d yanked open. After about 20 prone minutes, I was back on my feet and ready to go again. But I’d learned a very valuable lesson: Always respect the power of Everclear.

Pumpkin bar recipe enough for two pans From page 2 And don’t drink shots out of a mug. That’s a good rule too. If you’re planning a Halloween party of your own, I suggest making the drink with something a little
weaker: spiced rum. The flavor will be different, but you won’t find yourself on the floor quite as quickly. Or you can keep the Everclear and soak up all that high-proof liquor with a pumpkin bar or six. This recipe makes two pans’ worth, which is great for a party — or for giving one away and hoarding the other for yourself.

From page 4 Because, of course, she included a recipe for UP pasties. I couldn’t wait to make them. While I didn’t jump right on it — I started with the lemon bar recipe while my sweetie used a sauce for roasting chicken to go with our smoked bird —I did get around to it before I really had the time. With politics taking center stage in my life, and weekend trips planned in between before the weather turns nasty, I knew I didn’t have a lot of time to spare. So, one night, my sweetie joined me in the kitchen while I made the dough. The next night, I slaved away for hours and hours while streaming Netflix until too late. We ultimately enjoyed our first bites at about 10:30 p.m. one weekday evening. They were worth the wait. The meat and veggies were packed so tight, it was like eating a juicy hamburger in a pie crust, and the flavors were subtle so as not to overwhelm t h e g ro u n d m ea t a n d crunchy crust. I did take some minor liberties with the recipe, making smaller hand pies than it called for and making a mixture of ground beef and ground venison rather than ground beef and ground pork. But other than that, I trusted the M idwest foodie, and she did not let this Midwest girl down. Here’s what I did:
