BIGGER, FASTER, STRONGER: MEASURING UP

Today’s athletes caught up in numbers game ■ Methods have changed, but strength, speed important parameters By JIM SULLIVAN jim.sullivan@wcfcourier.com

Dirk Homewood isn’t interested in the needle. He’s trying to rediscover the haystack. Homewood is the head boys’ track and field coach at Cedar Falls. He also serves as a strength and conditioning coach for the Tigers. Along the way, Homewood has studied the science and the history behind it all. How do athletes get bigger, faster and stronger now? How was it done years ago? Homewood concluded that one reason that players live in the land of bench presses, squats and 40-yard dashes today is — they chose not to stay down on the farm yesterday. “I think more than anything there’s been a change in society — a cultural change,” said Homewood. “Back in the 70s, even the 80s, a lot of kids growing up would work on farms as farmhands. They would stack hay bales — that type of thing. This generation of kids doesn’t have that kind of job anymore. Now, you see a lot of student-athletes in the weight room trying to simulate those type of lifts — being explosive. That’s a lot of what we do with the Olympic-style lifts. “Obviously, there’s exercise science behind it all. There’s more to it than hay bales. But, I think to a certain degree some of that was lost.” As strength and conditioning programs have evolved, what’s been found are numbers. Lots of numbers. Athletes today, especially football players, are frequently tested and measured. There’s the bench press, the power clean, the squat, the

power snatch, the 40-yard dash, the vertical jump, the long jump and so on. Just how much a senior offensive tackle can lift, or how fast a sophomore wide receiver can run the 40 are numbers that attract

attention from fans, high school coaches and the men who recruit kids for college programs. “Yeah, college coaches inquire about the numbers quite a bit,” said Alex Pollock, the head football coach at

Aplington-Parkersburg. Said Lonnie Moore, Waterloo West’s head coach, “I like to see improvement. I want to see where they were at the start as freshmen to where they end up. We test kids at the beginning of

January and the end of July. We want to see those measurements — where kids first are to where they end up. It also helps us make sure we’re doing the right thing.” Coaches also say that the numbers don’t necessarily tell the whole story about a football player. The 40-yard dash time, for example, may not shed much light on lateral quickness or the initial burst off the line of scrimmage. High school coaches want their players to be bigger, faster and stronger. They also insist they make themselves part of something bigger than themselves. “In my opinion, after 30 years of coaching, I think the bottom line is kids feel confident and strong when they’ve been working hard and working as a team in the weight room,” said Kevin Meyer, the first-year head football coach at Waterloo East. “How much they squat, how fast they run — it’s all great. But it’s about getting kids together and all doing it as a group. When you get that with a group of kids, you have something pretty special.” That said, there is always interest in the special kid — the one that’s going to write his ticket to the University of Iowa, or Alabama, or Iowa State or Northern Iowa. The numbers produced by those potential college football players are widely disseminated on message boards and websites. Sometimes, the measuring and testing are done in very public places. Nike, for instance, held an event called “The Opening” this July. A showcase for the some of the top high school recruits in the country, The Opening includes the SPARQ Rating National Championship. There, competitors are timed in the 40 and the vertical jump. They’re measured in the vertical jump and a power ball toss.

BIGGER, FASTER, STRONGER: TRAINING

Year-round training the norm ■ Programs designed to help development, protect against injuries Becoming the best athlete one can be is a year-round job in 2013. But training can come in a many different shapes and sizes and is important to the overall well-being of an athlete. “There has to be periods of active rest, but in terms of strength and conditioning, there isn’t an option for whether you’re going year-round or not,” said Union football coach Joe Hadachek. “Most importantly is the prevention of injuries. You’re going against people who are bigger, stronger, faster and you want to be in the best possible shape.” Area high schools have mostly adopted year-round strength and conditioning programs — open to all — to develop better all-around athletes. This includes weight training three or four days per

week accompanied by agility, plyometric, speed and deceleration drills. Theoretically, athletes involved in multiple sports — from the tight end on the football team to the outside hitter on the volleyball team — will go through similar weight training programs with individual skill work coming separately. “Whether it be male or female, they are all down there,” said Waterloo Columbus athletic director and head football coach Aundra Meeks. “Even if they’re in season. We’re doing this with the fact that we’re a smaller school and kids are playing multiple things. Physical well-being and all those kinds of things play into what we’re trying to do. “It’s not a football-specific thing, it’s a universal workout to build better athletes.” While programs differ from school to school and program to program, specific muscle groups are typically targeted twice per week with at least two days of rest and recovery sandwiched in.

“At Union, we have them in Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for 60-70 minutes,” Hadachek added. “We have a brand new weight room at Union, so we get into some Olympic lifts, power lifts and we’ve used kettle bell workouts a lot the last few years.” From there, in-season coaches guide player- and positionspecific workouts as necessary. A football coach will have his quarterback and receiver throw and catch. A volleyball player will practice hitting. A cross country runner will hit the pavement for six miles. That kind of precise training becomes more and more important as athletes get older and begin to specialize in a certain position for a certain sport. That is the case for Upper Iowa University strength and conditioning coach Dan Lemke, whose job is to conduct a program to help make an offensive lineman the best offensive lineman he can be from September to November.

ing weights depends on a lot of factors, among them size, age, body type and so on. A strength and conditioning organization called Bigger, Faster, Stronger has developed a chart designed to help athletes compare themselves to others around the country. For example, consider a sophomore football player who stands between 6 feet and 6-2 and weighs more than 220 pounds. If he can squat 315 pounds, he’s given “All-American” status under the Bigger, Faster Stronger system. Ross Pierschbacher, the 6-4, 295-pound senior offensive lineman at Cedar Falls who has verbally committed to Alabama, has a maximum squat of 475 pounds, according to rivals.com. That lift

accords him “All-State” status under the Bigger, Faster Stronger measuring stick. “He’s been excellent in what he’s done,” said Cedar Falls cohead football coach Brad Remmert. “And he runs well for a kid who’s 280, 290 pounds.” Remmert added, “We’ve had some kids weighing 250 pounds who have benched 300. We’ve also had some kids weighing 185, 195 pounds who bench over 300 also.” As far as building their own teams, high school coaches say that the times and weights and everything else can provide guidelines when the questions are who can play and where. But the game is more than just measurements. Said Remmert, “We don’t tell

a kid to run a certain time to be able to play wide receiver or defensive back. There’s more to it than just straight-line speed. But it does give us an idea. It opens eyes.” Ultimately, a football coach in Iowa has kids. Not all of them are going to play college football. But all of them provide the raw materials for a high school team. “You have what you have,” said Pat Mitchell, the veteran co-coach at Cedar Falls High School. “If a guy can’t run, you can’t go get one who can.” Added Pollock, “We’d love to have kids (who run) 4.5 or 4.6. Where we live, that’s not always possible. “We want them to be the best they can be by being good players and good teammates.”

Among other things, Noil ran the 40 in 4.4 seconds. The best time belonged to a Florida prospect named Trey Marshall. A safety, Marshall posted a 4.34. According to Cedar Falls head coach Pat Mitchell, James Harrington ran about a 4.3 40 during his high school days. Harrington was a wide receiver/return specialist for the Tigers before starting his college career in track and field.

Rivals.com listed the 40 time for Barkley Hill, a star running back at Cedar Falls, at 4.59. He’s at Iowa. So is former Tiger quarterback/tight end Isaac Boettger. Rivals.com lists Boettger’s 40 time at 4.6. Lance Dunn, the senior running back at Waterloo West, has run a 4.43 40, according to NCAAsports.org. “I’d say the average high school speed you get is about 4.8 or 4.9 — maybe 4.7,” said Moore. “We have had kids run slower than that. But you have a different type of speed on the field. If you have to think about what you’re doing on the field, that slows you down. We try to keep things simple, so they don’t have to think. They can just play.” An athlete’s capacity for lift-

Weaker diets a growing concern

Year-round workouts a must for today’s athletes to compete From page 3

Keeping up with trendy fastpaced offenses isn’t the only concern for football coaches these days. A societal shift demanding food prepared just as quick has presented a unique set of challenges with regard to sports nutrition. As athletes on the go turn toward drive-thrus and quick meals with processed foods, coaches are becoming increasingly worried about player health. “I think I probably pay more attention to it now than I ever have,” said Dike-New Hartford coach Don Betts. “At the same time, I don’t know exactly what can be done. You don’t have them in a training table situation where you can really control their food intake. You just have to try and educate as best you can.” As a coach and parent of two football players, North Fayette’s Bob Lape is familiar with the increasing challenge of providing healthy family meals. “No question I’ve gained 20, 30 pounds in the last few years because of the fast food and more convenience,” Lape said. “In my household we’ve got four of us, with my daughter being a man-

Many players in the Dike-New Hartford program, including Brice Beninga, left, Brian Coulthard, center and Grant Bossom, are consuming chocolate milk rather than protein shakes as a source of recovery nutrients following their workouts.

ager, involved in football. We get home, my wife is coming home from work, it’s what can we eat real quick? “It becomes a challenge. You need to get your proper servings of fruit and vegetables and protein, and we have started eating more chicken and fish in my house. It’s tough when families are on the run.” Some athletes have turned to supplements found in bars, capsules, liquids and powders to complement strength training and provide the nutrients missing from their daily routine. Union Community football coach Joe Hadachek and his wife, Gloria, sell AdvoCare supplements exclusively from their gyms in Dysart and La Porte City.

He was drawn to the product line in 1998 as a college football coach. “Having been in the locker room I had seen a variety of different things in that locker room,” Hadachek said. “The biggest concern as a coach is, what are your players taking and is it safe?” Hadachek went to a national coaching convention where he was introduced to AdvoCare. He took the products himself and was satisfied with the results. “That was one company I felt comfortable with personally taking products,” Hadachek said. “They pride themselves on safety and that’s the reason we locked arms in 1998.” Safety remains the coaches’

main concern. “When we’re speaking about supplements, we’re not pushing one supplement in their direction,” Hadachek said. “I tell them No. 1, if you’re under the age of 18, you need to go to your parents — they’re going to make the final decision. And No. 2, just make sure your product is safe.” Third party companies such as Informed-Choice and NSF Certified for Sport have staked their reputation by providing a list and information on a variety of supplements that are safe for consumption. Or a running back be the best running back he can be. For the most part, time spent in the weight room is used to get stronger. That is especially the case from the time players get back to campus after winter break and until spring football begins. While practice is in session, weight training is more about maintenance until more gains are stacked up in the summer. And Peacock football players also train with individualized goals in mind. “The philosophy that I and our staff has is, in the weight room, it has to be specific to the game of football,” said Lemke. “We make sure the movement patterns in the weight room reflect what we’re doing on the field as much as possible. I’m not going to train our guys to be power lifters because they’re not power lifters. They’re playing football.” For example, power cleans are a staple for a lineman workout because they must generate power from a position close to the ground, just like their stance at the line of scrimmage. A quarterback, for instance? “A lot of stuff with shoulder development to make sure their arms don’t get worn out,” Lemke said. “Develop that shoulder girdle, so once we get to spring ball and get into camp when they’re throwing a lot of balls, they can stay loose and keep strength throughout that. A lot of rotation-type work. A quarterback is really not down in a power clean position, so we take them and put them more into the position they’re playing in.” Finally, repetition is key, as always. Speed, strength or any other gains take time, even when it’s being attacked year-round.

BIGGER, FASTER, STRONGER: INTANGIBLES

Size, strength, speed don’t always tell the whole story ■ Top players are usually students of the game and highly motivated By JIM NELSON jim.nelson@wcfcourier.com

There is a myth that if an athlete is taller, bigger, faster and stronger he will be the better competitor on the field of play. While having great physical attributes is always a benefit, those traits don’t always translate into elite performances. Coaches at all levels talk about something else when it comes to finding the great ones — intangibles. Does a player have game sense and football savvy to be successful? Does he know when not to take a direct hit and throw

NUTRITION

Diet and rest help build stronger minds and stronger bodies From page 4 The various kinds of supplements athletes take fall into the categories of pre-workout, during workout and post-workout. Nearly every team uses a supplement such as Gatorade or Powerade for halftime rehydration. Meals, protein shakes or even milk have become popular sources of recovery nutrients. The University of Nebraska, one of six universities with two fulltime sports nutritionists, has turned away from protein shakes and toward chocolate milk as a recovery source. It’s a trend that caught Betts’ eye at Dike-New Hartford.

the ball away? Does he know the appropriate way to act on and off the field? Is he a team-first player or one quick to accept credit? And probably most important, is the kid coachable? Is an athlete willing to take constructive criticism and know the coach is only trying to make him better? “That is so true,” Cedar Falls co-head coach Pat Mitchell said. “If you can’t take coaching, you can’t get better.” Mental toughness is something coaches frequently bring up when evaluating how an athlete responds to making a mistake on the field or his mindset when he gets to the line of scrimmage. “It’s more important than anything,” Waterloo West head football coach Lonnie Moore said. “We tell our kids all the time

“Some major Division I football programs have gone away from kids doing the protein shakes and what-not and they just give them chocolate milk when they’re done with a workout,” Betts said. “We’ve got a lot of kids that drink a lot of chocolate milk. I’d hate to be a parent of some of those kids because I think they live on that stuff.” Despite varying opinions on supplementation, all coaches can agree rest and diet are the two most important factors in building a stronger body and mind. “Bottom line is just taking a supplement is not going to make you bigger, faster, stronger,” Hadachek said. “It’s a puzzle. You’ve got to get the proper rest, you’ve got to have a great strength and conditioning program and make sure you’re eating right.”

WATERLOO — Kevin Meyer did his homework before accepting the head football coach’s job at Waterloo East. Meyer studied film. He talked to other coaches about the Trojans and the Mississippi Valley Conference. Based on his studies, Meyer constructed a thesis statement about his new program. “To me, it seems like East is a football school,” said Meyer, who came to Waterloo after stints at Fremont, Neb., and Gallatin, Mo. “It has been. They had a lot of success back in the 80s and so forth. There has been success today, Kody did a really good job of bringing the program back. What we want to do is bring it to the next level and that doesn’t happen overnight.” Kody is Kody Asmus, the man Meyer succeeded at East. Before resigning, Asmus woke up the echoes after years of disappointment. Under his watch, the Trojans made the expanded Class 4A playoffs three straight times, ending a drought that had extended back to 1991, and won its first postseason game in 33 years. Asmus departed in the wake of East’s second consecutive winning season. So did some of the athletes who helped make the Trojans’ rise possible — standouts like Desmond Van Arsdale, Russell Jones and Aaron Taylor. Meyer will have just five returning starters on his first squad, three on offense and a pair of defenders. But there is some talent there. Javon Middleton, a promising wide receiver/cornerback, returns after regular duty as a freshman. John Magnuson

There will be more emphasis on

Another offensive lineman, Gabe Clark, brings 270 pounds to his job. Jared Farley heads the linebacking corps, while Eli Berregaard saw duty as a ballcarrier during Cedar Falls’ run to the Class 4A playoff semifinals. “It’s the very nature of high school,” said co-head coach Pat Mitchell. “We have a lot of guys coming in and there are a lot of opportunities for returning seniors who didn’t play much last year. At the same time, there are chances for new guys to pop in and take a spot and get on the field.” Said Brad Remmert, also a co-head coach, “We have some good pieces coming back, like Pierschbacher in the line and Gabe Clark. We have other kids with playoff experience and experience on both sides of the ball. We’ve got to figure out where we need these guys.” Most of the other coaches in the Mississippi Valley Conference believe Cedar Falls’ pool is deep enough and good enough to produce a contender. Said Remmert, “We tell the kids you’ve got to earn it yourself. It’s a new group and you’ve got to continue to try and work hard to get better.”

Waterloo West Following a winless 2011, the Wahawks went in the right direction a year later. It wasn’t a complete turnaround; West posted a 3-7 record, but the Wahawks did end a 21-year absence from the playoffs. To head coach Lonnie Moore, West’s postseason appearance still has value. “The monkey is off our back now,” said Moore. “The kids knew the last time we’d been in was 1991. We brought back that team to one of our games. So they knew. Previously, we’d always been one game away, one game away from the playoffs. So it was good to get that (playoff spot) last year.” The Wahawks won’t have Dequayvious Martin in the offensive backfield this fall. But West does have veteran quarterback Alex Young and an explosive runner in Lance Dunn. Blake Thomas and Kyler Mathews lead a group of eight returning starters on a defense that is “ahead of our offense,” according to Moore. To take another step forward, West will have to climb through a tough early schedule. The Wahawks open at Dubuque Senior Thursday, then meet Iowa City High, Linn-Mar at Cedar Falls. Senior, the Little Hawks and the Tigers all made the 2012 playoffs.

said. Those intangibles are what Iowa State offensive coach Chris Klenakis calls football intelligence or FBI in Cyclone vernacular. Klenakis says he doesn’t need a bunch of 4.0 students but players willing to be students of the game. “I don’t think coaches can say, ‘Go block this guy or go throw the ball that way,’” Klenakis said. “For us, it is do our guys understand what is going on with each play, such as what are we attacking here? Why are we running this scheme? What is everybody else doing? What is the defense doing?

“When everybody on your unit has that ... when that happens there is cohesion within the unit and the end result is they play faster.” There are other intangibles coaches look for, as well, such as confidence, character and being a fierce competitor. Confidence is being the guy who is willing to be the Alpha male on the field, a cockiness of sorts. Character is something coaches watch for all the time, and it is not just something they see on the field. When evaluating players to lead their teams, coaches frequently look for the

player willing to lead on and off the field. It is not always the most vocal guy. “You want the guy who acts the right ways on and off the field ... a guy other players will emulate,” Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads said. A competitor is a player who doesn’t give up easily and never concedes victory. That is the guy most coaches want. “To me, it’s really about the second, third and fourth effort,” Mitchell said. “The really good ones are relentless play after play and that really separates them. Those guys don’t just do it for four or five plays in a game. It is

there all the time, every play of every game, every practice.” Mitchell goes on to say the fun part of coaching is seeing the kid who isn’t blessed with the greatest athletic abilities who makes himself a valuable player or even a standout because he dedicates himself to becoming a student of the game and goes 100 percent from whistle to whistle in practice and in the games. “It happens every year for us,” Mitchell said. “There are two or three guys who we don’t see originally contributing who step up and shine. “That is fun to see and have happen.”

It’s a consensus. Ask any head coach in Class 3A’s District 3, and they’ll name Clear Lake, Waverly-Shell Rock and Webster City as the teams to beat this season, with 2012 cochampion Humboldt also in the discussion. Those four teams represented the district in the postseason a year ago, and they all return key players as they try to go a few steps farther in 2013. At Waverly-Shell Rock, Mark Hubbard enters his seventh season with an experienced team that features 18 returning letterwinners, including a dozen starters, from last season. The Go-Hawks, who finished 5-5 in 2012 with a first-round playoff loss to South Tama, expect to be productive and explosive on offense. Up front, veterans Josh Wright, Kaleb Staack, Shawn Lord, Colin Wiltse and Sean Westendorf are a force to be reckoned with. They’ll be clearing the way for running back Eric Willis (543 yards, 7 TDs) and quarterback Jake Velky (914 yards, 8 TDs), among others. The W-SR passing game has plenty of options in Colin Werkman, Tom Bates, Isiah Murdell, Brandt Seward and Nick Flege, several of whom will see action in the defensive secondary, as well. The Go-Hawks also return linebackers Joe Webber and Austin Mittlestadt, along with defensive backs Dan Stensland (four interceptions), Tanner Hanks and Mustapha Ward. “Experience is our strength,” notes Hubbard, whose team gets an immediate measuring stick when it hosts defending state champion Decorah in its opener.

Veteran coach Fred Wieck has 13 starters back from an 8-3 team that bowed out in the second round of the playoffs last fall. “We have a lot of returning starters and good numbers of juniors and seniors,” Wieck says. “As every year, we hope to win our district and go deep in the playoffs.”

Offensively, quarterback Brock Adams (71-for-111, 1,233 yards, eight interceptions, seven touchdowns) heads a cast of six returning starters that also includes running backs Chase Lester and Carter Hand, along with three linemen. Defensively, seven starters are back. Webster City’s optimism is

Bohlen takes over as new head coach at Charles City From page 9 Humboldt must replace several of its top players, including the entire offensive line, from last year’s co-district champs, who reached the second round of the playoffs and finished 7-4 overall. However, a group of nine letterwinners includes Class 3A’s top returning running back in Brady Ross (1,381 yards, 18 TDs) and all-district noseguard Nikko Wheeler. Two areas where the Wildcats excelled last season were forcing fumbles where their 17 recoveries ranked fourth in 3A, and in kickoff returns where Humboldt was No. 1 with a 28.4-yard average. Charles City, Algona and Iowa Falls-Alden will be trying to play their way into the hunt for a playoff berth. Darren Bohlen is the new coach at Charles City, and he’s building around nine players who started at least one game last season. The Comets will have to weather a schedule that begins with New Hampton and also includes nondistrict foes Waukon and Decorah. In all, seven of Charles City’s nine regular-season opponents were in the playoffs a year ago. Iowa Falls-Alden returns nine starters, including all-district performers PJ Norem at tight end/defensive end and Sam Thielen on the offensive and defensive lines. “We return a solid core of seniors, particularly up front,” says head coach Pat Norem. “Our team should be physical and be able to run the ball as well as stop the run.” At Algona, coach Eric Bormann expects a strong senior class to continue the improvement is program has made. The Bulldogs return 14 letterwinners, including quarterback Weston Shaw (780 passing yards) and running back/receiver Tyler Frideres.

CLASS 3A: DISTRICT 5

Decorah looking to reload ■ Graduation losses heavy following state championship season By DOUG NEWHOFF doug.newhoff@wcfcourier.com

A year ago, Decorah’s football team was like a runaway freight train as the Vikings destroyed nearly everything in their path on the way to the program’s fifth state championship and ninth appearance in the state finals. This season, head coach Bill Post is counting on that tradition as Decorah rebuilds with 22 letterwinners but just four players with starting experience. “This will be an exciting year as we have a large senior class who are very determined to prove they can be as good as last year,” says Post, who takes a 154-53 record into his 20th season at the helm. Among the Vikings’ veterans is running back Holt Johansen, whose 1,166 rushing yards and 16 TDs helped Decorah lead Class 3A in rushing last season with 3,847 total yards. He was also part of a defensive unit that picked off 18 passes last season. The other returning starters are lineman Austin Aschbacher, who was in on 54 tackles with six sacks on defense in 2012, along with receiver-defensive back Bryton Meyer and running back/defensive back/kick returner Cole Svestka. Post expects a strong junior class to make an impact and add quality depth, while rebuilding the offensive line and kicking game are key challenges. West Delaware, Crestwood and Western Dubuque are also expected to contend in District 5. Coach Doug Winkowitsch returns 13 lettermen and seven starters from a 7-3 West Delaware team. The Hawks’ top offensive weapons will be quarterback Brent Lammers (65 of 122, 1,162 yards, six interceptions, nine

touchdowns) and running back Tim Tutton (86-611, 7.1 per-carry avg., four TDs), who helped West Delaware rank sixth in 3A with 2,675 total rushing yards. Defensively, Jake Voss was in on 98 tackles last season and Tutton was a dangerous weapon on special teams as he averaged 24.8 yards on kickoff returns and 13.8 on punt runbacks with one score. “We will have good speed this fall, and our kids had a tremendous offseason,” says Winkowitsch. Crestwood returns a solid cast of veteran players, including two of the top receivers in the district in Jeffrey Haskovec (26-550, 21.2 avg., four TDs) and Spencer Bohr (30-370, 12.3 avg., no TDs) and key players on defense in Shawn Omar (98 tackles), Haskovec (four interceptions) and Bohr (three interceptions). The Cadets’ defense also forced 17 fumbles last season. Independence took a step forward last season under first-year head coach Brandon Krusey and returns 10 letterwinners and seven starters. Quarterback Kyle Fank threw for 704 yards and four TDs last season, and Chase Straw ran for 458 yards and a 4.7 percarry average. Western Dubuque made the playoffs a year ago, but has just six returning letterwinners and four players with starting experience. At Oelwein, nine lettermen are back. The Huskies are counting on their underclassmen to compliment a small group of seniors.

■ Powerful Waukon tabbed as team to beat in District 3 this season By JIM NELSON jim.nelson@wcfcourier.com

After a run to the Class 2A state quarterfinals a year ago, a veteran Waukon team is the preseason favorite in District 3 this season. The Indians return 15 letterwinners, including their top two rushers, from a 9-3 team. Parker Hesse, a 6-foot-3, 215pound dual-threat quarterback, rushed for 1,174 yards and 17 touchdowns, passed for 450

yards and had 328 receiving yards with four scores last season. He is expected to play quarterback this fall. Weymiller added 964 rushing yards and 18 TDs. “We’re well-established with our seniors and the playing time they have under the belts,” said first-year head coach Chad Beerman, who takes over for Ted Snitker. “We do lack depth.” Union has some big holes to fill, but returns one of the top players in the state in Iowa recruit Jay Scheel, who passed for 1,593 yards and rushed for 1,291 in 2012. Gone, however, are Scheel’s top four receivers from last season

and Union’s top three running backs. Knights head coach Joe Hadachek says his squad will be relying on players who have been patiently waiting their turn after back-to-back senior classes that won 21 games, including the 2011 state title. “The winning tradition over the last six years combined with our coaching staff and community are strengths,” Hadachek said. “Our biggest concern is lack of game experience. Our senior class has talent and we have good players in the junior and sophomore classes.

Kyle Blaylock of New Hampton tries to stop Union Community’s Jay Scheel during a game last season.

2A-3

New Hampton looking to replace key offensive weapons From page 12 “The biggest challenge we face is finding out who will play what position ASAP.” Top returners in addition to Scheel are Kolten Bader, Cole Reiter and Jace Hadachek. New Hampton went 9-2 last year and won a playoff game, but the Chickasaws have to replace several key players including 1,200-yard rusher Brandon Tenge, quarterback Noah Stochl (more than 1,700 passing yards) and top receiver Sawyer Anderson (890 yards receiving). New Hampton’s top returners are Kyle Smith, Kyle Blaylock, Koltin Pfaffle, Marc Throndson, Tanner Rentschler, Tucker Tenge and Connor Frerichs. Five of those are returning starters. Waterloo Columbus is looking to rebound from an 0-9 season in 2012. It will have to do it without the services of one of its expected top returners, Luke Farley, who has decided not to play football this fall. The Sailors return six other starters and 10 letterwinners, including a pair of quarterbacks who saw plenty of reps a year ago — Charlie Verduzco and Ethan Smith.

District 3 watch list PASSING ■ Trevor Haaland, Osage (182-32012, 2,246 yards, 21 TDs) ■ Jay Scheel, Union (92-149-7, 1,593 yards, 19 TDs) ■ Cole Miller, Hampton-Dumont (43113-5, 708 yards, 5 TDs) RUSHING ■ Jay Scheel, Union (124-1,291, 10.4 avg., 20 TDs) ■ Parker Hesse, Waukon (121-1,174, 9.7 avg., 17 TDs) ■ Marcus Weymiller, Waukon (75964, 12.9 avg., 18 TDs) RECEIVING ■ Kyle Smith, New Hampton (20417, 20.9 avg., 3 TDs) ■ Ryan Woods, Osage (36-344, 9.6 avg., 2 TDs) TACKLES ■ Connor Frerichs, New Hampton (145) ■ Dakota Ness, Waukon (115, 16 tackles for loss) ■ Seth Snitker, Waukon (104, 20 tackles for loss) INTERCEPTIONS ■ Tucker Tenge, New Hampton (5) KICKOFF RETURNS ■ Justin Carey, Union (4-249, 62.3 avg., 2 TDs) ■ Kolton Bader, Union (6-177, 29.5 avg., 1 TD)

Verduzco will start at quarterback this season with Smith moving to running back. Columbus also returns four players who played along the line — Mitch Roe, Jake Siddell and Cameron Weidner in addition to tight end Greg Glass. “Our district is very strong

once again with Waukon, Union, New Hampton, Central Springs, Hampton-Dumont and Osage having strong traditions and returning many players from last year’s teams,” Sailor head coach Aundra Meeks says. Central Springs has to replace nine starters from a 2-7 squad, but returns third-leading rusher Blake Blickenderfer (461 yards). Hampton-Dumont, coming off a 2-7 season, returns the bulk of its skill position players, led by quarterback Cole Miller. Miller, Isaiah Noelck, Chase Klein and Dalton Hanson combined to rush for 976 yards while splitting carries in 2012. Osage was a playoff team in 2012 and returns quarterback Trevor Haaland, who passed for 2,246 yards and 21 touchdowns last year. Casey Ringhofer (446 yards) adds experience and production in the running game.

South Hardin returning to varsity field ■ Ferch leads West Marshall into clear-cut favorite’s role By JIM NELSON jim.nelson@wcfcourier.com

West Marshall of State Center, the defending Class 2A, District 7 champion, will be considered the favorite heading into the 2013 season primarily because of the return of Duncan Ferch. Ferch led all of 2A last year with 2,264 rushing yards. He accumulated that total on 237 carries (9.6 yards per carry), while scoring 33 touchdowns. Ferch also returned three kickoffs and two punts for touchdowns. The Trojans return several other key players around Ferch as they reload for what could be a deep playoff run. After having just eight upperclassmen sign up for football a year ago, South Hardin had to scratch its varsity season and played just a junior varsity schedule. Longtime coach Randy Tjaden has retired and former Hudson coach Barry Scott has taken over the Tigers’ program as they return to varsity action. Nevada, after a nearly twodecade absence from the state playoffs, made it a year ago, but graduated a huge senior class. First-team all-district running back Chase Dobson returns after rushing for 1,162 yards and 11 touchdowns. Roland-Story lost eight games last year during an injury riddled season, but three of those losses were by a combined six points. Statesmen head coach Kerry Van Winkle, in his 39th season, has 40 upperclassmen on his roster, including 17 seniors who saw extensive action last fall. Gilbert returns three of its top offensive weapons from 2012.

District championships and bragging rights aren’t the only things that have been at stake when Aplington-Parkersburg and Dike-New Hartford have met the past three seasons. Three consecutive playoff showdowns have strengthened one of Iowa’s top high school football rivalries, and both schools are loaded for another

strong run in Class 1A, District 3 this fall. Dike-New Hartford has won two of those three playoff encounters, including a victory over A-P in last year’s state quarterfinals. “The fact that we’ve been in the same district and met in the playoffs the last few years has really taken it to another level,” Dike-New Hartford coach Don Betts said. “They’ve got a great program over there, they’re going to be outstanding again this year, and I think we know if we’re going to do anything in the playoffs we’ve got to go through A-P at some point and time.” Added Aplington-Parkersburg coach Alex Pollock, “It’s fun as a

coach, the adjustments that are made for the playoff games, and the games have always been close which makes it very interesting for the fans. It’s good for high school football, and I know both teams look forward to it.” Aplington-Parkersburg returns the district’s top playmaker in Brady Frey, who finished his junior campaign with 2,228 rushing yards, breaking a coveted school record set by Jared DeVries in 1993. “We feel like Brady is picking up right where he left off,” Pollock said. “He came in, in shape and he looks stronger.

DENVER FALL 2013 SPORTS SCHEDULE

1A-3

Nashua-Plainfield ready to make some noise this season From page 15 “We’re going to need to keep developing our offensive line. We’ve got a couple good returning starters that have kind of led the way so far, but we’re going to have a couple first-time starters up there that are going to need to come along pretty fast and be ready to go by Week 1.” Dike-New Hartford will plug returning linebacker Ben Cuvelier in to fill a void left by 2,109-yard rusher Terry Mooty. Betts says Cuvelier has a little more pure speed with his straight-forward style. “He’s not Terry Mooty,” Betts said. “He’s got to be himself and we’ll use him as best fits his abilities. He’s a very talented athlete and we’re excited to have him back there. ... Sometimes really good players get stuck behind other really good players.” D-NH returns three two-way starters on the offensive and defensive lines, including allstater Brian Coulthard. Quarterback/all-state defensive back Carson Parker is also back, along with all-district linebacker/fullback Levi Lynch. Among those looking to challenge A-P and D-NH, NashuaPlainfield returns six players on offense and five on defense from a squad that went 4-2 in district play last season. The Huskies posted an eyeopening, 48-0 win over North Tama in Week 0 of this season. Spencer Halloran, a 1,249-yard passer and 1,476-yard rusher, returns for West Fork. Hudson is breaking in a new head coach in Justin Brekke, who served as an assistant in the program last season. Senior two-way returning starting linemen Luke Huber, Ben Henderson and Drew Selenke will be crucial. “It starts and ends with our oline,” Brekke noted.

North Fayette ready to turn page ■ Merger with Valley Community helps give program a jolt By NICK PETAROS nick.petaros@wcfcourier.com

Last fall wasn’t a typical season for North Fayette coach Bob Lape and his tradition-rich football program. The Hawks failed to reach the playoffs for the first time in Lape’s six-year tenure, including a month of September in which North Fayette didn’t win a single game at any level (varsity or JV). A whole grade-sharing merger with Valley Community of Elgin has helped rejuvenate hopes around West Union this fall. North Fayette Valley has also merged its mascot into a TigerHawk, complete with a logo that features a Columbia blue tiger with a silver beak. Black, Columbia blue and silver are the school’s new colors. The graduation of a small senior class and a large freshman class has also helped boost football numbers from 49 to 73. The school will move up to Class 2A once the state re-districts. “We got a shot of adrenaline,” Lape said, addressing the merger. “It’s exciting times here. New colors, new mascot, new scoreboard. “Nobody wants to see their old colors disappear from either side, but that’s the only way it’s going to work.” The TigerHawks return three linemen along with their starting tight end, tailback, fullback and quarterback from North Fayette. Lape says at least three or four of the incoming players from Valley will also be major contributors. “Kids are kids,” Lape added. “They’ve meshed together. We’ve had all summer with

weightlifting to do that. It’s like we’ve been one all along.” Elsewhere in what is shaping up to be a very competitive Class 1A, District 4, defending champion South Winneshiek returns nine players on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Garrett Bohach is back after passing for 1,262 yards and 15 touchdowns and rushing for another 543 yards and six scores. With the leadership of 18 seniors, Saint Ansgar has experience on its side. The Saints return three of their top four rushers, their leading tackler and three offensive line starters.

A year ago, AGWSR posted a winning record for the first time since 2005. While finishing in the top half of the district, the Cougars missed the postseason on a tiebreaker. But plenty of experience returns in 2013, and they hope to be a big-time player in Class A District 2. “It began back in 2011 when we started with a weightlifting program,” said head coach Skip Eckhardt. “The guys have been

getting after it and hopefully hard work will pay off.” While passing wasn’t a big part of the offense last fall, a pair of underclassmen, Brandon Johnson and Cody Williams, return at quarterback while Evan Janssen is also in the mix to take snaps. Clay Meinders and Clay Bohner were effective as second options out of the backfield, and

added to it all is experience on the offensive line from seniors Derek Schipper and Dillin Hofmeister and juniors Trevor Bakker and Tanner Reents. However, the climb up the District 2 standings will be steep. In fact, each and every one of the eight teams returns its top passer from last fall. That includes West Hancock’s Jacob Hejlik, who directed a highly efficient Eagle offense to an undefeated run through the district and into the second round of the playoffs. Mason City Newman is also a team to watch as it brings back 1,500-yard rusher Joseph Burgmeier after losing only one district game in 2012.

Build it up, then break it down. The Wapsie Valley football team built itself up all the way to a 14-0 record and Class A state championship a year ago. The graduation ceremony took care of most of the tearing down. Now the Warriors hope to begin that process again. “Our goal is always to play 14 games. We lost some outstanding players that were a big part of that,” said head coach Tony Foster. “But in the championship game, six juniors started on defense. That will carry over.” While the defense has some building blocks in place, the offense returns one starter — BJ Weepie at tackle. That means 1,763-yard passer Mitchell Boevers is gone. The same goes for 2,186-yard rusher Tyler Odneal and 700-yard receiver Kenny Saulsberry. But enough about all that; Wapsie Valley now looks toward the future and what it can accomplish in 2013. Ryan Miller was one of the defensive starters last fall and will step in under center to lead the offense. Behind him are two other defensive guys who will now be counted on to play both ways as Stone Kane and Ethan Kleitsch will man the backfield. The pair combined for nearly 1,000 yards on the ground a year ago and will look for holes from a reconfigured offensive line. Weepie is the known commodity as competition among Bo Buzynski, Chance Beierschmitt and others is ongoing for the other four spots. It will certainly take some time for everything to get sorted out, which makes for bad timing for Wapsie Valley’s non-district

schedule. “The first two games of the year, Jesup and Denver, will be tough,” Foster said. “They’ll be much improved, so right away, our thoughts are on them.” The rest of Class A District 3 is hoping some of the growing pains extend into district play. And Starmont is one team ready to pounce. The Stars’ only loss in district play last year came at Wapsie Valley and several returning players may be looking to take that one

back. Jake Butler and Gabe Hamlett ended up as the team’s leading rushers and will be leading a hard-nosed attack. “We’re known to run the football, so having some experience back there is huge,” said head coach Matt Lee. “We moved Jake Butler up in the middle part of the season, and he did a great job. We’ll be trying to establish the run again.” However, guard Matt Cook and tight end Dan Franzen are the only returning offensive linemen

and will have to mesh with newcomers to make it all work. “Guys have done a nice job stepping in and getting after things,” Lee added. “It’s a young line, but we’ll be pretty physical and aggressive.” Turkey Valley and North Butler also figure to be in the conversation come October. North Butler comes back with quarterback Cody Nelson and outside playmaker Dillon Rademaker.

What weighs more, tradition or experience? North Tama and the rest of Class A District 4 are about to find out. The Redhawks rolled to an undefeated district title on their way to 10 wins a year ago. But that was a senior-loaded team, and newcomers will be expected to step right in this season. “We’re very thankful and lucky to have the tradition we have here. We’ve been blessed with good athletes, blessed with good tradition, and now we try to build on that tradition,” said North Tama head coach Dan Oltman. “The guys who graduated last year were passing down lessons to the younger guys. Now they’re leading drills and leading expectations. It’s kind of a trickle down.” Meanwhile, the rest of the district has plenty of proven talent to challenge for the top spot in

The Rebels have three linemen coming back on both sides of the ball. Other returning starters include two defensive backs and linebackers Dustin Dinsdale, Colton Dinsdale and Jake Peters. The laundry list continues on the offensive side of the ball. Leading rusher Chase Clark, who picked up 1,400 yards as a junior, is back along with both Dinsdales on the outside.

Even the quarterback position, where Gladbrook-Reinbeck will be looking to someone new, is able to put in a steady performer. Camden Kickbush has been a two-year starter on the Rebels’ basketball and baseball teams. “Last year, we didn’t know who was where, so we’re definitely hoping to be more consistent this year. “We can spend more time making players better instead of finding out where they’re going,” said head coach John Olson. “We have a pretty good tailback,

pretty good offensive linemen, so it’s no secret we’ll try to run the ball. “Camden Kickbush is a firstyear starter at quarterback, but he started at point guard and shortstop for two years, so he knows how to lead and will be good in the huddle.” Now North Tama is in the process of figuring out what pieces fit where. Junior Brody Hulme is tabbed to step in at quarterback and will have Omar Martinez and Brandon Kaufman to work with at the skill positions. But

Don Bosco tops explosive district ■ Key playmakers return to lead Dons, Janesville, Tripoli, others By DOUG NEWHOFF doug.newhoff@wcfcourier.com

Scoreboard operators, beware. Teams will be lighting it up around District 3 again this season. Talented, playmaking quarterbacks abound, beginning with Don Bosco all-stater Jake Hogan, Janesville’s Hunter Meyer, Tripoli’s Austin Newbrough and Riceville’s Ryan Shedenhelm. Hogan set the standard in the district last season while leading the Dons to a 12-1 record and a trip to the 8-player state finals. He rushed for 2,050 yards (an 8.3 average) with 28 TDs and completed 67.2 percent of his 174 passes for 1,677 yards and 31 scores. As a team, Don Bosco ranked ninth in passing yardage (1,689 yards), 11th in rushing (3,282 yards) and eighth in scoring with 594 points.

ings. The Raiders ranked fifth in 8-player passing a year ago (1,932 yards) and return playmaking receiver Derek Gamerdinger (28381, 13.6 avg., five TDs). Defensively, Gage Brandt made 109 tackles last season. Riceville could be in the postseason conversation as 10 veterans and a strong corps of skilled players lead the way. Defensively, Logan Shedenhelm made 139 stops a year ago and intercepted five passes. Clarksville has a new head coach in Chris Arians and must replace a dozen starters from last year’s powerhouse playoff squad that went 10-2. Offensively, the Indians will try to rebuild a ground game that ranked 10th in 8-player football with 3,380 yards. Defensively, the top returners include Mason Lovrien (66 tackles, three interceptions), Matt Negen (87 tackles, four sacks) and Trevor Fenneman (66 tackles, three interceptions, two sacks). Northwood-Kensett won’t surprise anyone if it makes a strong bid for a playoff berth. Eight starters are back, including the entire offensive and defensive lines, but the Vikings must rebuild their backfield. Rockford has one of the district’s most dangerous weapons in receiver John Jones, who

Meyer returns for third season as Janesville’s starting QB From page 28 Meyer also made six interceptions on defense and was one of the top placekickers in 8-player football. Chris Grimelli returns after an all-district season at running back, and all-state linebacker Sam Meyne (122 tackles) is back to anchor the defense. “We hope to finish in the top four and make it to the playoffs,” says head coach Dale Eastman, whose team is coming off a 7-3 campaign that included a trip to the postseason. Tripoli is excited about it’s offensive talent where Newbrough passed for 865 yards and 15 TDs last season and Tyler Seehase caught 30 balls for 406 yards and six TDs. All-district performers Tad Chapin and Dylan Meister return, as well, along with starters Nick Shinstine and Craig Schweer. “We expect to be more competitive with every team in our district,” says coach Tom Nuss. “We will be fairly thin in certain positions, but if we remain healthy, we should surprise some teams.” Dunkerton is looking to make a big move in the district stand-

■ West Central returns entire starting line for 2013 season By DOUG NEWHOFF doug.newhoff@wcfcourier.com

The name has changed, but not the expectations. Easton Valley, formerly known as Preston High School, is the clear-cut favorite in the 8player, District 4 race again this season. That’s nothing new for a program that has been a perennial playoff qualifier and once again returns many of the key pieces among 12 lettermen and eight starters from a 9-2 squad that got bumped from the postseason in the second round a year ago. The River Hawks win with offense, defense and special teams, and that will likely be the case again in 2012. Easton Valley ranked seventh in rushing a year ago with 3,502 yards and returns Andrew Driscoll (219-1,810, 8.3 avg., 30 TDs) and Chase Zaruba (97856, 8.8 avg., 15 TDs). The River Hawks were also seventh in scoring with 630 points. Defensively, Easton Valley

And on special teams, the River Hawks returned five kicks for TDs, led by Driscoll’s 24.3 punt return average and two scores. “We have a good number of

returning starters that will definitely help us at the beginning of the season to lean on for leadership as the newcomers settle into their new roles,” notes head coach Kevin Behr. West Central of Maynard made

the playoffs last season and has its sights set on a return despite the graduation of career rushing leader and all-state standout Michael Lincoln.

Central City returns quarterback David Mosler (97-202-16, 1,516 yards, 17 TDs) and receiver DeShawn Leudeman (20-375, 18.8 avg., four TDs). Kee High will count on Jameson Peterson (1,347 rushing yards, 16 TDs) and Dylon Peterson (25 receptions, 488 yards, eight TDs, six interceptions) as the Hawks bid for a postseason berth.

District 4 loaded with productive, veteran QBs From page 30

Ten starters are back, led by allstate lineman Hud Johnston and all-district lineman Dalton Koch, and the staff has added Mike Stafford, who built a Hall of Fame career as the head coach at East Buchanan. “We return a lot of experience on the offensive line with all the starters back,” says head coach Steve Milder, in his 42nd season overall as a football coach and his 36th as the Blue Devils’ head coach where his record stands at 211-122. “We have seven players who started on defense and hope to be greatly improved there.” Springville enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2012 when it went 8-3 and reached the playoffs. Four key starters return, along with three other players who made significant contributions. Elias Nissen rushed for 1,247 yards and 21 TDs and caught 22 passes for 404 yards and eight scores. Quarterback Sam Scriver threw for 1,248 yards and 17 TDs with just six interceptions. Defensively, Nissen finished last season with 74 tackles and three interceptions, Tyler Stewart had 96 tackles with 15 for loss and eight sacks, and Brian Allsup had 35 stops and two interceptions while going 50-for-56 on PATs. Jesse Robertson added 39 tackles with nine tackles for loss and five sacks. Midland lost three first-team, all-district skill position players, but does return quarterback Hagan Ackley (1,613 passing yards, 25 TDs) and defensive stalwart Ben Carstensen (125 tackles). The Eagles ranked seventh in 8-player passing yardage last season with 1,779 yards. Central Elkader could make a move toward the top half of the district with veterans Isaiah Hopp and Nathan Fitzgerald leading the way. Hopp passed for 860 yards and nine TDs and ran for 706 yards and 11 scores last season, while Fitzgerald ran for
