istory isn’t a dusty archive of dates, places and events to be recited on a pop quiz. “History is who we are and why we are the way we are,” said historian and author David McCullough. It is a collection of stories, memories and facts held and shared by individuals, families and groups that helped shape a community and gave it a strong foundation to build on. From the 1940s to ‘60s, the Cedar Valley became an industrial and commercial center. Major highways and automobiles, as well as railroads connected communities to the larger world outside our state borders, including Chicago and Minneapolis. Downtowns became thriving retail and business centers. Residential neighborhoods sprang up, and communities grew outward. The Cedar Valley sent its “greatest generation” to fight and win a global war, followed by the Korean War in the 1950s, and the Vietnam War in the 1960s. These were decades of prosperity and protests, improved and better access to medical care and the struggle for

In the second installment of a three-part series, “The Story of Us,” the photographs tell the story of the people, their livelihoods and community during these three tumultuous and exciting decades. This is the Story of Us.

here are plenty of stories from the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s about shopping at major department stores and the five-and-dime, crunching popcorn at the movie theater, cheering from the stands at a sporting events and enjoying recreational activities and community celebrations. Undoubtedly, people in the Cedar Valley knew how to have a good time.

ommunities are a reflection of the people who call it home. In the Cedar Valley, people strove together to build vibrant, thriving communities. They served their country with selfless heroism through multiple wars. There was unity as communities grew both in population and opportunities for education, employment and entertainment. There were struggles, as well, to overcome.

MELODY PARKER | melody.parker@wcfcourier.com
edar Valley residents have always had the fortitude to weather any storms from blizzards to tornadoes. For many decades, flooding was an major issue. As spring snows melted upstream and flowed downstream into the Cedar Valley, along with periodic heavy rains, waves of water surged into communities, swallowing streets and submerging neighborhoods and businesses. Residents were sandbagging on nearly an annual basis. In 1961, a record flood overtopped bridge decks in downtown Waterloo. In the aftermath, plans began taking shape for a massive flood control system. The community had a man-made disaster, as well, when long-simmering racial and economic tensions lead to the 1968 riot. With determination and grit, the Cedar Valley came together to face and surmount their struggles.
