Iowa State Fair rules!

Food on-a-stick. If the Iowa State Fair is known for any food specialties, it’s got to be the inventiveness of cooks poking sticks into just about any food – and sometimes deep-frying it. Last year, there were nearly 200 food stands and 60 items available on-a-stick, according to Iowa State Fair officials. A glance at their website (www.iowastatefair.org) gives a run-down on some of the stick foods at the 2013 fair: ‌Smoothie On-a-stick : The Smoothie On-a-stick at Turkey Time Concessions offered Fairgoers a sweet and healthy way to cool down. The strawberry smoothie is frozen, put on a stick and ready to be eaten on any hot August Fair day. ‌Bacon Wrapped Riblet On-astick: The Bacon Wrapped Riblet On-a-stick, available at the Bud Tent, is a pork riblet wrapped in bacon, hickory smoked and then basted with barbecue sauce. ‌Fried Brownie On-a-stick: A chocolate brownie deep-fried and topped with chocolate sauce and powdered sugar, available at Fyfe Concessions. ‌Soft Salted Chocolate-Dipped Almond Pretzel On-a-stick: A soft pretzel dipped in chocolate almond bark sprinkled with slivered almonds and a dash of salt, available at the Old Fashioned Root Beer & Pretzels stand. ‌Coconut Mountain On-a-stick: A soft and chewy coconut ball rolled in coconut flakes and dipped

in fresh chocolate; available at Oasis Concessions. Winner of the 2013 new food contest was the Shrimp Corndog sold at the Po-Boy Stand. Described as “bringing the beach to Iowa,” the snack featured fresh shrimp dipped in corndog batter, fried to golden perfection and topped with a sweet jalapeno glaze. Other new offerings included: ‌Sweet Corn Corndog, a hot dog dipped in batter enriched with fried sweet corn, available at Campbell’s Concessions. ‌Rib Shack Cowboy, a mix of cowboy beans, brisket or pork, coleslaw, a signature chip and barbecue sauce in a spice-flavored waffle cone, available at the Rib Shack. Check the website to find out what chow will be on the fair for 2014.

Contact: www.terzopianochicago.com The wait is worth it at The Gage, located across from the park at 24 S. Burger + cheese

= Wisconsin

Everyone knows about the cheese, brats, beer, bakeries and so on but did you know when it comes to burgers, Wisconsin just might be the heavyweight state champ? In fact, the hamburger is said to have originated in Seymour, which holds an annual Hamburger Festival to celebrate. Located just across the border from Upper Michigan, Marinette is the home to one of the best burger experiences in the country. Approaching their 70th year in business, Mickey Lu’s BBQ takes you back to another time. The charcoalgrilled burgers, served on hard rolls with plenty of butter, are one of the most unique tasting burgers in the world. (715) 735-7721 Pete’s Hamburgers just might be Wisconsin’s best burger shack. Since 1909 it’s been a summertime tradition to eat Pete’s signature somewhat-steamed burgers on the weekends. Pete’s is open each weekend through the end of October. It sits right off The Great River Road, one of America’s most scenic routes. Smokin’ hot Branson The sounds of banjos, fiddles and mandolins mingle with the savory smells of slow-smoked barbecue as Silver Dollar City Celebrates America with an all-American festival: Bluegrass & BBQ. The Branson, Mo., theme park fires up the stages and the grills now through June 1. The House of BBQ serves up Silver Dollar City’s famous flavor feast from St. Louis-style ribs and smoked chicken to Texas brisket and sweet roasted corn on the cob — direct from large outdoor

charcoal grills and a custom-made 9-foot smoker. The festival’s signature dessert is a 25-pound apple pie baked in a 2-foot wide cast iron skillet. Another back-by-populardemand feature is an all-you-caneat BBQ rib feast on the Square each afternoon with fall-off-the-bone smoked ribs, plus SDC’s famous 18-hour smoked brisket, along with smoked pork, chicken and sausage. Returning to the House of BBQ are visiting, award-winning BBQ connoisseurs, bringing an additional dimension of barbecue variety. Featuring straight-out-of-theOzarks pit-style barbecue is Richard’s Hawgwild BBQ of Aurora, Mo. Adding even more heat to the grills is Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, specializing in hickory smoked Texasstyle meats. A favorite stop for barbecue lovers is the Bottleneck Brothers

Sauce Shack on the Square, where guests can sample hundreds of sauces, from smoky chipotle and sweet hickory to Carolina vinegar and honey habanero, plus the park’s Outlaw Run Zesty Honey sauce with a kick and the new Ozark Mountain Apple BBQ Sauce. Award-winning performers include Rhonda Vincent, described as the “Queen of Bluegrass Music” by the Wall Street Journal and seven-time IBMA female vocalist of the year, performing with The Rage, the most awarded band in bluegrass; Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, 2013 bluegrass gospel artist of the year; Balsam Range, winners of the 2013 IBMA album of the year; Blue Highway, with 15-time IBMA dobro player of the year; the Boxcars, featuring nine-time IBMA mandolin player of the year and five-time Grammy win-

10 ways to beat the Midwestern heat You know it will be coming – a wave of sultry steamy weather when heat shimmers on the pavement, and we start looking around for ways to keep our cool. Try a few of these ideas to chill out!

Millstream Brewing in Amana

REAL RACINE PHOTO

Florida? No, North Beach in Racine, Wis.

1. Hit the beach. Without leaving the Midwest, you can find some fine beaches. One of the best is North Beach in Racine, Wis. It’s a beautiful, 1.2-mile stretch of sandy beach on Lake Michigan where you can catch some rays, paddle around the harbor in a kayak or rent a personal water craft. The beach hosts the Extreme Volleyball Professional tour each summer. Need to nosh? Grab a pizza pie (or pasta) at the beloved Wells Brothers Italian Restaurant and Bar. Riverboat Twilight

2. Take a Twilight cruise. The three-deck riverboat sails from Le Claire to Dubuque on the Mississippi River on a two-day journey. Twilight is a replica of traditional Victorian steamboats with all the

elegance. You’ll see historic landmarks, limestone bluffs and rolling farmland and dine on freshly prepared local cuisine, such as Iowa pulled pork. www.riverboattwlight.com 3. Cool off with a cold one at the 2014 Festival of Iowa Beers, Aug. 21 in Amana. The event is from 5 to 9 p.m. at Millstream Brewing Co., www.millstreambrewing.com. And if you can wait for it, the sixth annual Summer Beer Dabbler in the Twin Cities is Sept. 6 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Midway Stadium, www.beerdabbler.com. Omaha’s Beer Fest is June 6-7, featuring beer (of course), lots of food and music, www.omahabeerfest. com 4. Stop at your favorite HyVee deli and pick up a rotisserie chicken, a few sides and find a shady spot at a local park. Or choose a bottle of wine, fresh fruit, a French or Italian bread loaf and cheeses. May we recommend the chocolate f u d ge cheese f r o m COURTESY PHOTO K e l l y ’ s Kitchen? Chicago’s Navy Pier camp on the KOA campgrounds. Snacks, of course, are available. 6. Join the Navy – Chicago’s Navy Pier, that is. Duck into this cool and fun entertainment paradise while you’re in the city. There’s shopping, tour boats and dinner cruises, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, beer garden and rooftop terrace, the Chicago Children’s Museum, an IMAX theater, the park with a carousel and ferris wheel and plenty to eat. Beyond the food court, there are restaurants like Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville Bar & Grill and Harry Caray’s Tavern at the Pier. Plus those cinnamon-sugar-coated pecans, almonds, cashews and peanuts. The aroma permeates the air throughout the Pier. 7. The music is hot but the vibe is cool at the 8035 Music Festival. Des Moine’s urban music festival is July 4 and 5 on three stages in downtown Des

Moines. Nearly 50 performers will entertain, including Conor Oberst, Ziggy Marley, Brother Trucker, Dr. Dog, Caroline Smith and more. For more details, visit 2014.80-35.co 8. Go glamping, Iowa-style. Lovely, shady Fontana Park in Hazleton has two sustainable living cabins with solar electricity, vaulted, wood-sided interiors and exterior wood siding from trees harvested in Buchanan County. Each cabin sleeps five with two private bedrooms and a private bath with shower, along with a porch, grill and fire ring. Reservations can be hard to score, especially for holidays. Call (319) 636-2617. 9. Unwind at a resort. The Midwest has plenty to offer – from the rustic to the upscale, so it’s a matter of taste, budget and time. There’s Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island, Mich., with a health club, 18-hole putting course and views of Lake Huron;

numerous to mention. A little closer to home is the Honey Creek Resort in rural south-central Iowa near Moravia; Grand Harbor Resort and Waterpark in Dubuque,

Bridges Bay Resort in Okoboji; and Cedar River Resort near Lanesboro, Minn. 10. Get a brain freeze in LeMars, home to the makers of Blue Bunny ice cream. The Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor is the place for scoops and sundaes – and souvenirs from the Ice Cream Capital of the World.

As eaten on TV

Iowa is synonymous with corn, pork, sweet treats and farm-fresh foods. Take a look at this list of some places featured on national TV shows. Black Market Pizza, Ames Featured on the Travel Channel’s “Man vs. Food,” Black Market specializes in converting open-face sandwiches to Chicago-style deep dish pizza. Favorites are the Iowegian (sausage, bacon and ham), the Iowa Chop (served with cornbread or sweet potato crust), the Reuben and Bacon Cheeseburger. Ox Yoke Inn, Amana Located in a National Historic Landmark home, the Ox Yoke Inn’s family-style dining and honey apple pork dish were featured on “Pork Paradise,” a segment of the Travel Channel’s “Food Paradise” series. Ox Yoke uses old-world German and American recipes

passed down from four generations of the Leichsenring family. Jethro’s BBQ , Des Moines Featured on the Travel Channel’s “United States of Bacon,” “Food Paradise” and “Man vs. Food” all for one sandwich: the Adam Emmenecker, named for the MVP of the 2008 Drake University basketball team. This behemoth includes a pork tenderloin, an Angus steak burger, slabs of Texas brisket, applewood bacon and fried cheese, finished with buffalo chicken tenders. The entire sandwich is smothered with cheddar cheese and white cheddar sauce and served with a pound of waffle fries. Iowa Machine Shed, Des Moines & Davenport Recognized by the Travel Channel’s “Food Paradise” as having the best breakfast in America,

the Machine Shed prides itself on being a tribute to the American farmer. Known for chocolate covered bacon and monster cinnamon rolls, the Machine Shed brings the nostalgia of mid-century farming to life with farm tools and seed corn signs adorning the walls and wait staff clad in bib overalls. Meet me in St. Louis There’s the Gateway Arch, Six Flags, the historic and funky Loop neighborhood, Busch beer, Grant’s Farm, Lewis & Clark, the Cardinals. Plenty to see and do. This big city also is known to serve up a few signature dishes. In other words, prepare to eat your way through the Gateway to the West. (Elastic-waist pants are highly recommended.) Start with Toasted Ravioli or a Slinger at Blueberry Hill Restaurant, 604 Delmar in the Loop. A local landmark with a national rep, the place is packed with pop culture references – lunch boxes, baseball cards, comic books, neon signs and such. Play games like darts and pinball and admire the Wurlitzer jukeboxes. Then tuck into a Slinger. It’s a chili-parlor staple – two burger or sausage patties beneath hash browns, chili, cheese, onions and fried eggs. Prefer finger food? Try “T-Ravs or toasted ravoli. It’s the city’s most famous appetizer, a deep-fried twist on the Italian favorite. It’s served with marinara sauce for dipping. Contact: www.blueberryhill. com, (314) 727-4444. Fitz’s Bottling Co., 6605 Delmar in the Loop, is home to America’s original soda microbrewery where you can watch famous Fitz’s Root Beer being bottled on vintage equipment inside the restaurant. Order a

draft root beer and settle in at this hangout for a pork steak. What’s that? Pork steak? Yeah, man, a thick and juicy slab of grilled goodness drenched in sweet, smoky sauce. Can we get an order to go, please? Contact: www.fitzrootbeer. com, (314) 726-9555. For dessert, Gooey Butter Cake. That’s right – Paula Deen wasn’t the first one to figure out what to do with a stick of butter and yellow cake mix! It’s a St. Louis staple. Gooey Louie is the place to go, 6483 Chippewa St., voted best gooey butter cake in St. Louis for the past five consecutive years. All flavors are baked from scratch in small batches. Contact: www.gooeybuttercake.com Still a little room left in your tummy? Fill it with concrete. Ted Drewes Frozen Custard is a St. Louis classic. Located on old Route 66, Drewes has been churning out concrete shakes so thick you can turn them upside down since 1929. Contact: www.teddrewes. com, (314) 481-2652.

Baseball fans will love Ballpark Village, the new entertainment plaza located on the north side of Busch Stadium. The 10-acre plaza will offer the Budweiser Brewhouse with a beer garden, German-inspired food and displays about the brewer’s history and lots of food options. Three new habitats – Sun Bear Forest, Andean Bear Range and the Painted Dog Reserve – have been added to the Saint Louis Zoo. For kids, there’s the new Monsanto

Minneapolis: Haute cuisine & hot dishes

Think of America’s great food cities, and Minneapolis probably isn’t on your top 10 hit list. Maybe it should be. This Midwestern city has its own take on haute cuisine, awardwinning chefs and restaurants with a constellation of stars on Yelp reviews. And yeah, there are those signature dishes that Minnesotans – and the rest of us – love: the hot dish, the Juicy Lucy and walleye. However you spell it — Juicy Lucy, Juicy Louie or Jucy Lucy — this mouth-watering burger was destined for greatness the instant those all-beef patties were stuffed with cheese. At the 508 Club, 508 First Ave., the Juicy Louie, is filled with white and American cheddar cheeses and topped with bacon, onion, lettuce, tomato and thousand island dressing. OK, there’s a hot dish on the menu, too. A step up from usual casserole, tater tot hot dish is ground beef, veggies and herbs smothered in earthy mushroom béchamel (that’s a white sauce), topped with crispy tots. www. bar508.com Vincent, A Restaurant will surprise you with its delectable Gouda-stuffed, Vincent Burger. Rated one of the best restaurants in the Twin Cities by Mpls-St. Paul Magazine. There are two things to try at FireLake Grill House & Bar: the walleye and dirty fries. FireLake has two locations, Mall of America at 2100 Killebrew Drive in Bloomington, and 31 S. Seventh St., in downtown Minneapolis. First, the walleye. There’s the Minnesota walleye burger served with slaw and lemon-tarragon remoulade, the corn-encrusted Red Lakes walleye and walleye cakes, a small-plate dish. Dirty fries are so good, it’s a dish that’s hard to share. Hand-cut fries
