John Ford SHEPHARD, Jr. digs out his 50-year old scrapbook and reminisces… and gives thanks for what we sometimes take for granted.
Seventeen year old, John Ford Shephard, Jr., enlisted in the U.S. Navy on February 28, 1962 in St. Clair, Michigan. He requested to go through recruit training in San Diego, California. After recruit training he was assigned to the U.S.S. Richard S. Edwards (DD-950) (home ported in San Diego, California) and completed a 7-month tour in the western Pacific Ocean from November 1962 through May 1963. Shephard requested reassignment to the newly commissioned U.S.S. Gridley (DLG-21) (home ported in Long Beach, California). The Gridley became known as ‘The Grey Ghost of the South China Coast’. For photos and interesting information pertaining to these 2 ships you can Google – USS Richard S. Edwards (DD950) – Wikipedia and/or USS Gridley (DLG-21) – Wikipedia. John would have been attached to one or the other of these modern-time U.S. Navy vessels between February 28, 1962 and April 14, 1965. Shephard visited many ports during his tour of ‘sea duty’: Hawaii (Honolulu), Australia (Adelaide, Perth, Geraldton), Philippines (Subic Bay), Okinawa, Japan (Sasebo,Yokosuka), Hong Kong,Taiwan Island (Keelung,Taipei), Viet Nam (Gulf of Tonkin, South China Sea). CANDIDATE-PN3 John F. Shephard, 3200 W. Ramona Rd. received a plaque for being named Serviceman of the Month. Shephard, a Navy recruiter with five years of service, is one of six candidates vying for Serviceman of the Year award. Winner of the national honor is expected to be named this week.
ONE - YEAR OLD - John Shephard, III, son of US Navy recruiting officer, of 3200 Ramona Road, Alhambra, celebrated his first birthday Sunday. John’s dad, assigned to Navy’s main recruiting station downtown Los Angeles, was chosen serviceman of the month recently and was a runner - up for the coveted serviceman of the year award.
Cedar Falls Navy Man Honored
John F.Shephard PN2 USN, of Cedar Falls was awarded the Joint Services Commendation Medal at ceremonies at the Naval Recruiting Station In Waterloo. The award was for meritorious work in duties and handling of applicants for the Navy while he was on duty in Los Angeles. From left to right are CDR A. J. Froggett, CO US Navy Recruiting Office in Des Molnes, Shephard As Shephard’s expiration of enlistment approached, he was unsure of what he wanted to pursue in civilian life. He did know he wanted to further his education. He agreed to re-enlist, for a 3-year period, if he would be assigned to ‘shore duty’ in the Los Angeles, California area where his family now lived. He was honorably discharged on April 14, 1965 and re-enlisted that same day. He was soon assigned to duty at the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Station, Los Angeles, California. That station was staffed by dozens and dozens of Army, Air Force, Marine and Civil Service personnel – but NO Navy personnel. I was the first and would be the only for the next 3 years. The men in the other branches of service wore very similar uniforms – all khaki colored pants and shirts… that looked like pants and shirts. My uniform? Navy blue bell bottoms with that white hat that you’re probably familiar with. Did I stand out? Oh boy! I was faced with a real test – and decided I needed to do and look my best. You will note some of Shephard’s achievements by the accompanying articles. As you know, Hollywood neighbors Los Angeles. We processed a few celebrities, such as Frank Sinatra, Jr., Mickey Rooney, Jr., Gary Lewis to mention a few. Yes, I have stories also! I was fortunate to appear on Art Linkletter’s House Party and was invited to participate on The Dating Game (but declined since I had recently married!).

HQ US ARMY SIXTH RECRUITING DISTRICT BULLETIN #46 PROMOTION AT LOS ANGELES AFEES: (RCH-RP) John F Shephard, USN, assigned to LA AFEES, was recently promoted from Third to Petty Officer Second Class. Petty Officer Shephard has, in the past, distinguished himself by being selected Service Man of the Month for November 1966, and runner-up of Serviceman of the Year, 1966. For all these accomplishments and for his recent promotion, congratulations and keep up the good work. Once Shephard’s son, John III was born, any thoughts of making the Navy a career ended. A Navy career would eventually take him back to sea for an extended time. Shephard did, however, enroll in evening classes at Woodbury Business College, Los Angeles. Shephard was honorably discharged on May 14, 1968 and arrived in Cedar Falls, Iowa the next day with assurance of employment with Martin Brothers Distributing Company. In September 1968, Shephard was called back to active duty for a single day in order be presented the Joint Services Commendation Medal at Waterloo, Iowa. This was featured on local TV channels and in The wcfCourier. The Joint Service Commendation Medal (JSCM) is a decoration presented by the Department of Defense to individuals who, while serving as a senior on a joint military staff, have performed either an exceedingly heroic act, exceptional achievement, or commendable service that has not been recognized by a higher award. When the medal is issued for an event that occurred while in active combat, the “Valor” or “V” device is authorized to be worn with the medal. The Joint Service Commendation Medal was established by Secretary of Defense Robert E. McNamara on June 25, 1963.
John Ford SHEPHARD, Jr. –reflects… I am fortunate to have had the parents I did… and their upbringing. I have no regrets or resentments pertaining to my childhood. I do recall having a few meals consisting of broken pieces of bread with milk and sugar on them.If I wanted Levi jeans and my parents could only afford the JC Penny brand, that was O.K. – as long as I paid the difference in price. And, yes, I can tell you what the price was in 1960 ($3.49 vs. $2.69)! I am proud to say that my sister, Carol, and two brothers, Jeff and David (deceased) followed in my footsteps and also served their country – our country – by voluntarily joining the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam conflict. Carol retired as a Captain, USN. I thank the three of them for their service… and being a part of my family. I am especially proud of: My two sons - John, III (deceased) and Scott. My grandchildren - Jeremy,Travis,Alex, Dillon and Sidney. The mothers of my grandchildren – Andrea Gotta, Angie Shephard and Kim Sprenger. My wife and very special grandma of our grandchildren – Angela Haes Shephard. I love them all, in the best way I know how – profoundly! I want to thank the U.S. Navy for their discipline, training, recognition of potential, developing that potential, advancement opportunities, instilling in us the importance of working together as a team – regardless of where we come from, regardless of aptitude or schooling, that the color of a person’s skin carries no more weight than the color of a person’s hair, eyes, shoes or finger nail polish. We had one another’s back covered – no matter what! I would certainly be amiss if I didn’t acknowledge the efforts and services offered and provided by the Black Hawk County Veterans Affairs and the Veterans Administration at the federal, state and local levels. I am grateful for the Government programs of the United States of America. Medicare and my supplement insurance provide me with medical care that costs me approximately $260.00 per month and I pay nothing after a $183.00 annual deductible is met – and I can choose any doctor and/or facility that accepts Medicare. Social Security – I never viewed it as a fully funded retirement plan and, in 1935, I don’t believe Uncle Sam did either. But I went to work (summer job) the day I turned 16 years old and paid into it until I was 66 years old.The benefit is substantial. And, in two months, my wife will benefit from my contributions and, in combination with hers, she will be well taken care of, financially, for the rest of her life. Believe me, I’d rather still be working… and contributing to Medicare and Social Security… than be 74 years old and dealing with what I am now. Don’t complain about having to work… be glad you can! My country (and yours) has ‘given back’ far more than I have given her. When colors (the flag) appear and the National Anthem is played I still get a lump in my throat. When I stand before the cross my eyes still water. I count my blessings that I was never faced with taking the life of another human being. There are no words that I can express to those that had no choice. Think long and hard about the words “appreciation” and “entitlement” and how you apply them. I learned there was no Santa Claus at 10 years old! To all of you – the words “Thank for your service” were never heard in the ‘60s, but I did encounter signs that said,“Dogs, cats and Sailors stay off the grass”. I didn’t understand that. I was never ashamed of my uniform and wore it proudly.Today, at the most unexpected times, I am told,“Thank you for your service” and it warms my heart and is appreciated.Thank you all… and it was a pleasure to serve you 50 years ago! Period!
P.S. I am exceptionally grateful for the 2018 “Pumpkin Season”! 00 1
