By contrast, Gary Kelley is a native Iowan and an internationally recognized illustrator. He's been a regular contributor to Rolling Stone, Playboy, Atlantic Monthly and many other publications and he created the ubiquitous author murals seen in Barnes & Noble bookstores nationwide. In his downtown Cedar Falls studio Gary conceived and sketched our cover image on a large canvas

before handing it off to Paco who then worked his aerosol magic on the left half of it. Next, Paco returned the unfinished art to Gary, who completed the right side of it in his more traditional oil painting technique. The result was a unique challenge to these two skilled painters from different generations and different cultures. And if you ask either of them, despite these differences, two things they'll always have in common are a passion for Picasso and a passion for their own personal art.

Famous Dave spent 25 years perfecting America's favorite style of barbeque, like our hickory-smoked ribs and Georgia chopped pork slathered with our own Rich & Sassy® BBQ sauce. And if over 200 national and regional awards don't convince you, the great taste will. Our menu also features smokin’ sandwiches, mouth-watering burgers, garden fresh salads, and homemade desserts all served up in a casual, down-home atmosphere with toe tappin’ blues. Open daily for lunch and dinner. Pull up a chair or grab a load and hit the road with Famous Dave’s TO GO. And don’t forget Dave’s catering, perfect for your next friends or family get-together.

nearby while The Cedar Valley offers an abundance of events and attractions, we also have neighbors who offer additional activities that can enhance your stay here. All are within a short drive, so you can stay in Waterloo and Cedar Falls and get out and explore Northeast Iowa without spending too much time in the car. Area activities include outdoor recreation, great shopping, agricultural heritage, unique architecture, and wineries. The Cedar Falls Tourism and Visitors Bureau and Waterloo Convention and Visitors Bureau are always pleased to assist you by sharing additional ideas and itineraries for nearby excursions. Photo: Craig Johnson of Heartland Acres Agribition Center teaches visitors about the past, present and future of agriculture through interactive exhibits, historical displays and live farm animals.
nearby | AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE Northeast Iowa offers a wide and wonderful variety of attractions showcasing the agricultural heritage of our area. Travel south of the metropolitan area on highway 218 to La Porte City, where you will find the FFA Historical and Agricultural Museum. Heartland Acres Agribition Center is located to the east on Highway 20 in Independence. The small community of Hazelton is north of Independence and offers shopping opportunities and a glimpse of life in an Amish community. A short drive to the south, in Hudson, you’ll find Heritage Farm, where large Percheron horses pull wagons to a cabin in the woods for a special time with Santa during the holidays. Tours of Hansen’s Dairy Farm await you in Hudson as well, where you can milk a cow, make butter and see wallabies while learning about this family operated commercial farm operation. FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT Fans of Frank Lloyd Write have two great opportunities to experience his work by traveling just a short distance from the Cedar Valley. Cedar Rock State Park is located just off highway 20 to the east. The Walter House is an example of one of Wright’s most complete designs. Nearly everything in the house bears his imprint. The Stockman House is located in Mason City, less than 90 minutes to the north on highway 218, and is the first Iowa building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

ADDITIONAL SITES TO VISIT Nashua is home to the Little Brown Church in the Vale where thousands have been married and return every summer for a reunion picnic and vow renewal ceremony. The Field of Dreams was filmed just an hour to the east of the Cedar Valley in the small community of Dyersville. The movie site still exists surrounded by family farms and rolling hills of Northeast Iowa. Visitors can bring their bats and gloves and have a game of catch, just as Kevin Coster did on the same field. Dyersville is also home to the National Farm Toy Museum and the Basilica of St. Xavier, which is one of only 52 in the United States. FOX RIDGE WINERY 1465 L Ave., Traer, (319) 478-8080, www.FoxRidgeWinery.com Wineries are popping up all over the state of Iowa and located just 25 minutes south of Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Fox Ridge Winery features gifts, a tasting room and tranquil scenery. getting around
The Cedar Valley offers the activities, events and attractions of a much larger city all just a short distance apart. Getting here is quite simple, whether you’re in your car, on a plane, or taking a bus. Once you’re here, getting around is quite simple as well. If you want to do the driving we can accommodate your needs. If you’d like to leave the driving to us, we have taxi service, limousines, buses, or horse drawn carriages/sleighs to get you where you need to go. Photo: Lois Wishmeyer, volunteer extraordinaire, offers assistance at the Cedar Falls Visitor Center, which is open seven days a week.

tion for providing exceptional undergraduate education, as well as programs at the master’s, specialist and doctoral levels. Building on its historic excellence in teacher education, the university also has outstanding programs in business, natural sciences, humanities and fine arts, and social and behavioral sciences. The university’s size, 13,200 students, allows it to offer faculty, facilities and academic choices of a large university, while retaining a friendly, small-college atmosphere on a parklike campus. With more than 40 buildings on 940 acres, the campus can still be crossed in an easy walk. Experiential learning opportunities such as undergraduate research, internships, student teaching, international study programs, community volunteering and cooperative education encourage a classroom connection to real-world experience. A rigorous liberal-arts core curriculum equips students with a broad understanding and knowledge of how to apply and acquire new information throughout life. Activities are plentiful for both students and the community. The university offers a full calendar of performances, lectures and exhibits, many of which take place in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. The GBPAC also hosts numerous national touring acts. UNI sponsors 18 varsity intercollegiate sports, many in the UNI-Dome and McLeod Center.
