Chocolate, mocha, cream

COLOR PALETTE

C

hocolate never goes out of style for fall and winter weddings. The latest incarnation pairs this deliciously decadent color with two perfect companions – mocha and cream. It’s a neutral color scheme that’s anything but boring. You could say it’s inspired by your favorite truffles or frothy mocha latte – or even pine cones, in keeping with the seasons. The colors are luscious and seductive and to balance all that warmth introduce elements of winter frost like glacial blue, cool white, mistletoe green or silver pink. 1. A barn reception is a perfect venue for the layering of shades of brown and cream.

2. Indulge your passion for chocolate — and love — with this engagement ring: A chocolate diamond in a swirl of glittering diamonds. 3. Elaborate and luscious chocolate decorations create a gorgeous wedding cake. 4. Chocolate, cream and mocha make a happy marriage in this fall-themed bridal bouquet. WEDDINGS FALL/WINTER 2017 5

Evergreen bouquets ‌Make the perfect bridal bouquet for your winter wedding by incorporating signs of the season into the design. Ask your florist to incorporate evergreen trimmings, berries, pine cones, white or red roses or tulips, twigs, etc., into your bouquet and flower arrangements. And don’t forget an evergreen-themed boutonniere for the groom!

‌The last thing you and your groom will want to come home to is another cookie-cutter space. “No matter how small your budget or transient your living situation, take the time to make a place you love,” recommends Elaine Griffin, designer and author of “Design Rules.” Her tips for feeling that “ahhh” every time you open the door? Educate your eye and think about what kind of styles, colors and shapes resonate with you. Streamline the space by choosing mul-

titasking pieces that incorporate plenty of storage (even your old risers can look chic with a custom bedskirt from Etsy). Griffin advises clients to “mini-splurge on portable things that really speak to your soul and make you smile when you look at them, like art and accessories.” The rest of your budget should focus on impactful comforts that will last for years.

TARGET

“Opt for something simple and classic. I love this simple midcentury option, and the dark neutral color means that you can bring in some fun pops of color in textiles and accessories,” says Emily Henderson, designer and author of “Styled” and home spokesperson for Target, recommending the Redding midcentury sofa ($699.99, target.com). The Redding midcentury sofa is a classic couch.

Keep your gown as fresh and beautiful as the day you said. “I DO.”

AT RIGHT: “A rug helps ground a room. If you are on a budget, I recommend going with a natural material like jute, leather or wool. Also look for woven instead of knotted rugs. These will get you a bigger bang for your buck,” says James Tabb, designer with the online interior design service Laurel & Wolf, recommending the Valet jute rug ($249-$499, cb2. com). CB2‌

“I never like to waste any space, and a lot of times you just don’t have room for a dresser in your first bedroom, so this storage bed is ideal because it turns all that usually wasted space under your bed into drawer space,” says Kyle Schuneman, designer and author of “The First Apartment Book: Cool Designs for Small Spaces,” recommending West Elm’s contemporary upholstered storage bed in Deco Weave.

5 4 ABOVE: Usually in your first space a true dining room is a luxury. This foldaway table looks high-end, but can be tucked behind a sofa when not in use. Flip up one side to use as a desk, or both sides for dinner, says Kyle Schuneman, author of Kyle Schuneman, designer and author of “The First Apartment Book: Cool Designs for Small Spaces,” recommending the Span gateleg dining table ($299, crateandbarrel.com)

AT LEFT: Lighting can make or break a space. Layer lighting with an omnidirectional floor lamp as well as directional task lamps. Tabb recommends Uttermost’s rust-black, fluted metal-base floor lamp ($488.14, houzz.com).

PANTRY ‌M aking the move into your first home as newlyweds can seem intimidating, especially when it comes to outfitting the kitchen. Yes, you’ll have to put some money into it — although maybe not as much as you think. In fact, if you spend wisely, you’ll save money on eating out and have kitchen equipment that will last for years — and maybe even someday end up in your future offspring’s first kitchen. Pro tip: Check out yard sales for kitchen equipment — you can find amazing bargains on everything from dishware and cutlery to skillets, blenders and handmade rolling pins. PANTRY INGREDIENTS: $150‌ Your pantry setup will lay the foundation for everything you need from pre-workout breakfast to late-night snack — and even Sunday brunch.

EASY SHELF-STABLE PROTEINS Fill your larder with both canned and dried beans — canned for when you need a super-fast meal of rice and beans at the end of a long day, and dried for making more luscious soups and stews. Raw nuts can be pureed into pesto, tossed onto a salad or sauteed with veggies for a burrito filling. Dried/canned beans (black, kidney, navy, etc.) Dried lentils Raw nuts: cashews, walnuts, pine nuts Canned tuna in oil (look for an Italian brand, like Cento)

STARCHY BASES AND ADDITIONS Stock up on super-thin capellini pasta when you want to cook dinner in 10 minutes flat, and grits (or polenta) make a great base for eggs and roast chicken alike. Different varieties of rice are often sold in bulk. Rice (basmati, jasmine and OILS/SAUCES/CONDIMENTS brown, but also bamboo, black A few basic staples provide the (forbidden) rice, arborio, etc.) basis for pasta, stir-fry, curry, Pasta (wheat, rice, etc.) chili and soup. 12 FALL/WINTER 2017 WEDDINGS

SHARPS‌ Every cook needs a few good knives, like a basic eight-inch chef’s knife and a small paring knife. A set of kitchen shears is handy for breaking down a chicken, snipping herbs and cutting off those pesky heavy-duty rubber bands binding the broccoli. THE ESSENTIALS: $75 8-inch chef’s knife Serrated paring knife (Victorinox’s four-inch Swiss Classic Paring Knife, $7.69) Corkscrew (the winged corkscrew is practically foolproof for a novice, but a waiter’s corkscrew is a classic) GOOD TO HAVE: $35 Kitchen shears 10-inch serrated bread knife (great for slicing bread, cake, tomatoes and eggs; try Chicago Cutlery’s Walnut Tradition 10-Inch Bread Knife/Slicer for $16.99) POTS AND PANS‌ Pots and pans can be a big expense, but most cooking can be handled with a skillet, a stock pot and a sheet pan. Yard sales are a great place to look for cast-iron or enamel skillets and Dutch ovens, which can often be easily reconditioned at home at a small fraction of the cost of purchasing new.

THE ESSENTIALS: $100 6-inch cast-iron or nonstick skillet (ovenproof) 12-inch cast-iron skillet 9-by-13-inch baking glass baking dish (a half-sheet-pan-size stainless steel hotel pan can also be a good budget option) Rimmed baking sheet 6- to 8-quart stock pot GOOD TO HAVE: $75 Dutch oven (Lodge’s 6-quart Enamel Dutch Oven, $49.99, or Cuisinart’s 5 1/2-quart Chef’s Classic Enameled Cast Iron Oval Covered Casserole, $56.89) 9- or 10-inch nonstick saute pan (ovenproof) ELECTRICS: $175‌ There is a dizzying array of appliances that could easily fill up an entire kitchen, but there are a handful that can be useful on an almost daily basis. Use an immersion blender for everything from smoothies to soup; a scaled-down food processor frees up counter space and speeds up chopping veggies or whipping up hummus. Immersion (stick) blender Mini food processor Rice cooker (dish up rice and steamed vegetables for a quick meal in 20 minutes; try Black & Decker’s 6-cup cooker, $19.99) Slow cooker (come home to ready-to-eat chili and stews; try the KitchenAid 6-quart slow cooker with standard lid, $89) BAKING ESSENTIALS: $80‌ Once you get bitten by the baking bug, it’s easy to obsess over handmade French porcelain pie pans and high-end stand mixers — which someday may be worth investing in. Until then, a simple rolling pin — if it’s not tapered, it’ll be easier to roll out dough evenly — is a musthave, and a bench scraper is useful for other tasks besides baking, like scooping up chopped ingredients to throw into a hot pan. 2 9-inch round cake pans 8 1/2-inch loaf pan 9-inch pie glass plate Rolling pin (Ateco’s 19-inch maple wood rolling pin, $7.99 at webstaurantstore.com) Bench scraper Kitchen scale (baking requires some precision, so invest in an Escali’s Primo Digital Kitchen Scale, $24.89) Handheld mixer

TRENDS IN DRESSES

Amazing new gowns ‌F

or spring and summer 2018, bridal designers are giving brides the freedom to be themselves on their special day. “You do you” seems to be the message, but still there are a few fresh twists and trends on the horizon.

WEDDINGS FALL/WINTER 2017 13

70S, PEARLS, ETC.

’70s style While it’s not quite Gunne Sax, some brides are falling in love with vintage 1970s details — fluttery sleeves, flouncy skirts, ruffles, Victorian and Edwardian touches.

FASHION BELTS, BLACK AND BLACK&WHITE

Belts Brides who want to draw attention to their waists often reach for ribbons, but a belt can be so much more. Cinch your waist with jewels, pearls, corset belts, wide bands and sweet bows.

16 FALL/WINTER 2017 WEDDINGS

Black & white If all black is too much, how about a few black flourishes like ribbons, belts, buttons and bows? Black details can be elegant and classy, without being too in-your-face.

Black It would take a bold bride to walk down the aisle in a black wedding gown. Designer Reem Acra was inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s little black dress in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and designed an entire bridal collection devoted to black — with some bling.

Trousers are keen for 2018 for the “it bride. Watch for tailored jumpsuits —and sequined ones, too, and pants worn with peplum-waisted and off-the-shoulder tops, pearl details, sheer overlays and floorlength, drapey jackets.

Corsets The corset trend — underwear-worn-onthe-outside — has yet to run its course, and now designers have given it even more oomph. Stripped-down bustiers are being drenched in guipure lace, crystals, embroidery and appliques.

ART DECO GLAM, BIG SKIRTS, GLOVES, CAPES

Big skirts Ball gowns are favorites among brides who fancy themselves as princesses, but these skirts are bigger-than-big — some are huge, in fact. Vera Wang’s voluminous version has a hidden bustle.

Art Deco glam A throwback to the glamour of the ‘20s and ‘30s Art Deco era, details include beaded embellishments, embroider y, opulent necklaces, sleek sheaths and open backs with draping.

Layers

Capes

Gossamer layers of tulle and ruffles are layered with lacework, embroidery and other embellishments. Layers also can be transparent enough for glimpses of bare skin.

Grand or modest, old Hollywood or ‘50s and ‘60s-ish, designers have created simply stunning capes as cover-ups at any style wedding.

20 FALL/WINTER 2017 WEDDINGS

VEILS, GLOVES, SLEEVES

Sleeves Sleeves are getting a reboot for spring 2018 — billowing, fluttering, puffed-up poet’s shirt style, heavily embellished or embroidered, even exaggerated.

Gloves Wearing long evening gloves with wedding gowns was a tradition for generations, but fell out of favor with brides. Now they’re back — sheer, embroidered, elbow-length and at the wrist.

Veils A lush bridal gown needs an equally statement-making veil. Designers have pulled out all the stops with sheer tulle, embroidered, dotted with 3-d silk flowers and extra-long veils. You’ll also see veil-like tulle gathered around the shoulders.

Maggie & Daniel M

aggie Luce and Daniel Blom wanted their wedding to be meaningful. “Our ceremony was unique and super personal. We wrote our own vows and found a script online that we could put our stories into it. … At the end, everyone gathered in a circle around us, hugging and singing to a Billy Joel song,” Maggie says, recalling their April 29, 2016 ceremony. The wedding and reception took place at the Hotel Monaco in Old Town Alexandria, Va. Daniel’s brother, Delaney officiated at the wedding. “We wanted it to be very personal and unique because we wanted to express our love by sharing what we believe about love and commitment. My brother, who is a great storyteller, did an amazing job. He added his own lines, unbeknownst to me and Maggie, which were at times hilarious and at other times, extremely heartfelt,” says Daniel. “As we stood in front of our family and friends, we laughed, we cried and, most

importantly, we got married,” he says. Maggie, who grew up in Waterloo, and Daniel, who is from Warrenton, Va., met and fell in love at Manhattan College in New York. “We’d been friends during the four years of college, but we had three courses together our senior year. I got to know him a little more and asked him out. I found out he had a crush on me the whole time and was taking all those courses so he could be closer to me,” she says, laughing. They dated seven years before he proposed. Daniel is an attorney, and Maggie is senior manager of volunteer programs for a non-profit intercultural exchange program, Youth for Understanding. Their wedding took place in the hotel’s lovely brick courtyard draped with twinkle lights. “It was low-key and very pretty. On the way in, guests were served champagne, and we did a champagne toast at the end of the ceremony,” says Maggie. She wore an elegant open-backed silk-satin gown in white and carried a bouquet composed of white hydran-

geas and other white flowers, as well as her grandmother’s fan. “She’d carried it in her own wedding,” Maggie explains. The bride’s shoes were strappy, sparkly Jimmy Choos in a champagne color. Her attendant wore a floor-length red lace gown and carried white hydrangeas. Maggie’s mom, Carol, and her friends ordered flowers — white tulips, hydrangeas and roses — from Sam’s Club to create the bouquets and reception flowers. The Enchanted Florist provided ceremony centerpieces and boutonnieres. The groom wore a black tuxedo and white shirt, and his dad, Richard, served as his best man. A cocktail reception was hosted to celebrate the couple’s exchange of vows. “I wanted it to be a party with everyone having a really great time and enjoying delicious food. The menu included suckling pig with sides, salmon, hanger steak with chimichurri sauce and a cheese bar. A Spicy Margarita and an Irish mule (using whiskey instead of vodka) were signature cocktails.

The couple cut a Heath Bar crunch caramel cake with vanilla frosting. Cupcakes also were served. A disc jockey flooded the reception hall with music, and Maggie and her dad, Tim, danced to Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.” Ultimately, Maggie and Daniel experienced the wedding they’d dreamed of, and offer this advice to other couples. “Make it something that you really want. Get input from everyone, but listen to your heart.”

WINTER WEDDING

WONDERLAND ‌A winter wedding doesn’t have to be holiday-oriented. Instead, go for a frostier color scheme using blues, whites and silvers . Be adventurous with your choice of flowers, for examples, and reach for hydrangeas for winter, crystal embellishments, pine cones, etc. Winter seems to call out for a more formal invitation, so look at thematic designs, heavier cardstock, even calligraphy. For something different, serve espresso and eggnog as part of the cocktail hour, and have cocktails rimmed with sugar crystals. Wedding cakes, cupcakes and even cake pops can be showstoppers.

SOMETHING BORROWED, ‌I

f your plan is to include your furry, four-legged significant other — your dog — in your wedding ceremony, there are a few things you need to consider to make sure it’s a tail-wagging good time, according to the American Kennel Club. 1. Does your dog handle crowds well? If your pooch is easily stressed by changes in its environment or being pawed by strangers , it’s probably not a good idea to include him or her in the ceremony. But if your pet is well-behaved, then it will make for a memorable day. You may want to consider a refresher training course so your dog will remain calm and quiet during the ceremony. 2. Let your wedding party know the dog will be part of the group. Often couples want their pet to stand in for the ring bearer or flower girl. Also, consider if you want the pet to wear a wedding costume (and please, don’t make it too ridiculous a get-up. Dogs have dignity, too.) In any case, it will make for a sweet scene — and a lovely memory for the couple. 2. Is the venue pet-friendly? It would be awful to arrive with Fido on a leash and learn that he won’t be allowed inside.

something chewed …

3. Make sure your photographer knows your dog is part of the wedding party, and that the photographer is comfortable around dogs. Plan in advance which photos you want to have taken with your dog. Let’s face it, brides, this is an opportunity to have a professional photo taken with the two loves of your life — your groom and your pet!

4. Choose and make sure someone in your wedding party is available to hold the leash while you’re busy posing. This person should be armed with treats and baggies for cleanup. 5. Consider YOUR temperament. Sorry, bridezillas: This option is not for you. Dogs don’t understand the seriousness of a wedding ceremony, so unless you can maintain a sense

of humor about the possibility of something going awry, leave Fido out of the festivities — for your sake and everyone else’s. 6. Cats may be a bit too independent to include in your wedding, but if you have a pet pal such as a goat, horse, donkey, bird or other critter, they can be incorporated into your special day for photos.

5 tips for navigating wedding expos The majority of engagements happen between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, according to theknot.com. That means late winter and early spring are usually when brides visit wedding expos and bridal shows where vendors can assist brides, grooms, wedding parties and their families with planning the big event. Make it easier to navigate the expo: 1. Always bring someone with you whose opinion you really trust, who knows you well and can share those experiences with you. Make it a fun SHUTTERSTOCK PHOTO‌ day. 2. Before you go, make a list of things you need. then take time to look at other things. haven’t considered. Don’t know Look at the vendors. Take care of Get the priorities done first and then where to start? Begin with wedding the things that are very important, have fun exploring other things you and reception venue, caterer, florist 28 FALL/WINTER 2017 WEDDINGS

and photographer. 3. Make sure you have a date. If you’re just shopping around and you have a date, rates could change. Try to come with a date in your mind, because no one’s going to hold that date until you’re absolutely sure. 4. Talk to the vendors. You really want to meet them to make sure the chemistry is good, the personality is a good fit. 5. Don’t feel compelled to sign a contract right then and there. Take some time. After you’ve seen everybody, get their information, check them out, check out their websites and reviews. Ensure that they’ve got a good standing and good recommendations.
