The color is best described as a purple that incorporates shades of plum, pink, purple, red and gray. It’s a darker, dramatic color that is a bit glamorous and elegant, but earthy and rustic, too. It may be your perfect color for a fall or early winter wedding. Pair it with navy, blush pink, forest green, gray or deep, dark red.

Terrific turquoise he color evokes the earth and T sea, and is just as effective for a modern wedding as it is for a rustic wedding. Turquoise can go light or deep, depending on your taste and the season. It’s vibrant, vivacious and fun, but pair it with gold and turquoise takes on an almost luminous quality that’s perfect for an elegant gathering. Also try it with shades of pink, cream, white, black, gray and brown.

lanning your wedding should be fun and fabulous, but for many people, it’s one of the most stressful things they’ve done. Don’t get frazzled — we’re here for you. We rounded up Chicago’s and the nation’s top wedding specialists to give you insider tips that are on trend, with real advice to help you decide what to do and what not to worry about, so you can focus on a wedding that will be the talk of the town for years to come. THE DRESS White is no longer mandatory. Subtle colors like blush and champagne are trending and give gowns a vintage feel, said Lori Conley, senior vice president of merchandising, product development and design for David’s Bridal. The minimalist bride may choose a gown whose silhouette, draping and unique details are the stars. Necklines are changing this season to show more shoulder. Nontraditional brides are choosing short dresses and jumpsuits, Conley said. Avoid heartaches and headaches by not buying it online. “You want to touch the fabric to make sure you’re getting what you actually pay for. You can’t return a dress online, like you can shoes,” said Ivy Jacobson, senior digital editor for wedding website The Knot. To avoid dress-disappointment, don’t try on a dress outside of your budget, said Jennifer Spector, director of marketing for wedding-registry site Zola.com. THE TOAST Keep it short, 30 seconds to one minute, and speak slowly. Write it out ahead of time, and practice speaking in front of a friend, to give you feedback on delivery, said Sayjal Joshi, a cast member at The Second City e.t.c. Theater, Chicago. THE MAKEUP For a fresh look all day, keep a sharp lip liner close. “This will be your best friend. Not only does it literally resize and reshape your lips, but you can also use it as a stencil to make your lipstick last longer,” said Charlotte Tilbury, superstar British makeup artist. Modernize your look with a matte texture lipstick. For Amal Clooney’s bridal makeup, she used Matte Revolution in Amazing Grace, a vintage tea-rose shade.
THE VENUE One decor trend is bringing the outdoors in, with lots of festoon lighting, greenery and garlands evoking a “Midsummer Night’s Dream” feel, said Christine Picerno, director of sales for Cafe Brauer in Chicago’s Lincoln Park. If your dream venue is a little out of your price range, ask about offseason rates, budget menus or other ways to manage costs. “Be savvy and ask. The worst they can say is no,” Picerno of Cafe Brauer said. Make sure to ask for the maximum guest count for a seated dinner, if you want to have a formal sit-down reception, said Debi Lilly, chief eventeur for A Perfect Event

in Chicago. If you plan to have a band, make sure to ask for space for a dance floor, and the band space or stage space, as well. So many times this is not included in creating maximum guest counts and floor plans. THE VENUE DESIGN Timeless style with soft romantic edges is growing popular, and it avoids eventually dating the design, said Collin Duwe, event producer at Kehoe designs. Achieve that look by using lush, monochromatic flowers and adding accents like textured linens or plates. Finish it with an accessory like a tall vase.
WEDDINGS
THE INVITES When compiling the guest list, think about people as part of groups. If you invite one person from the group, you must invite everyone to avoid hurt feelings, since invitees are likely to talk about the coming wedding.“Ask yourself — am I going to invite my second cousins, or just first cousins? My sorority friends or not? People from work? That’s the best way to manage it,” said Marcy Blum, owner of New York-based Marcy Blum Associates, named one of the world’s best event planners by Vogue and Martha Stewart Weddings. Have a wedding website, but still send paper invites. Thick or unusually shaped invites can cost more money to mail, Zola’s Spector said.
AMAZON.COM PHOTOS
THE FOOD Couples are choosing healthier, clean food over heavily fried or foods with thick gravies, say Hilary Saurer, director of sales, Levy Restaurants at River Roast restaurant. Caterers may be open to customizing menus, too, especially if you have a favorite recipe, said New York party planner Marcy Blum.
THE DRINKS For a pre-dinner cocktail, consider a pre-batched drink. Measure and dilute all ingredients, pour in clear serving bottles and place on a serving tray with glasses for individual servings, said Justin Pasha, founder and president of cocktail catering service The Cup Bearer in Fairfield, Conn., who has worked with Bride’s magazine and Town and Country magazine. Also, open bars are unnecessary. All you really need is beer, wine, and Champagne or prosecco.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY Engagement sessions are critical to memorable wedding photographs since they can help couples relax around the photographer, said Candice C. Cusic of Candice C. Cusic Photography, an award-wining international wedding photojournalist. She likes to shoot at the couple’s favorite places. “We do things that make clients feel comfortable. That way they can ignore the camera,” she said. Look at photographs from a full wedding day, and not just a few photos on the photographer’s website or Instagram page. “If you’re doing a ballroom wedding, you’re not going to hire someone who only shoots barn weddings. You need someone with the experience to do the wedding from start to finish,” said Kristin La Voie of Kristin La Voie Photography, named one of Chicago’s best wedding photographers by Brides magazine.
FALL 2019 | WEDDINGS 17
THE FLOWERS Mike Hines, owner of Epoch Floral in Chicago, said he does a lot of sculpted and architectural flower designs for weddings. These are simple designs using two or three elements, such as a bowl made of branches on the table with a perfect ball of white flowers in it or upon it.
THE PARTY FAVORS Simple chocolate squares with the couple’s name on them are popular. For her wedding, Annie Rupani, owner, of Houston-based high-end chocolatier Cacao & Cardamom, whose work was featured in Martha Stewart Weddings, bought book boxes at a craft store. The cover page showed anecdotes about the bride and groom, and it hid the chocolates underneath. “It was a really cool reveal because no one knew that they were getting chocolates.”
THE CAKE Chicago-themed cakes featuring the skyline are always popular, and this year monograms and sugared flowers are trending, including flowers to match the bride’s dress or bouquet, said Nancy Drogosz, director of sales at Bittersweet Pastry Shop.

f you’ve got your heart set on a 2020 wedding date, here’s a look at what’s trending for gowns. Ball gowns, redefined: Full, classic and gorgeous, many designers have put the emphasis on fabric, as much as detail. Dresses in satin and tulle are almost architectural-looking, but still ethereal. Beautiful backing: Daring, fun and dramatic, dress backs are open, but not necessarily bare. Consider it added interest for wedding guests that often seem more of a bride’s dress from behind during the I do’s. Crepe: Modern, flattering and structural but stretchy, crepe fabric is a modern look for a gown. Feathers: Be the center of attention in a dress — long or short — that has delicate plumage for some serious optics. Halter necklines: The style is
flattering to many figure types and has a bit of a ‘70s vibe that works in this modern interpretation. High-low: The high-low hemline — often with poufs and ruffles galore — demands a pair of killer wedding shoes. Short: You spent a fortune on those wedding heels — why not show them off in a short, sassy dress? The mini look is especially good for destination weddings, smaller fetes or a more casual ceremony. Slip: Slinky and a little show-offish for brides who don’t mind a dress that skims the body. Suits and separates: Peplum jackets, deep necklines, trains, shorts and lace sleeves update this practical and pretty alternative to a traditional wedding gown.

THEME AND VENUE If your wedding has a theme, you might want to reflect that mood in the music. Make sure the band or DJ can meet your requirements. Also take into account the venue and any restrictions. A band will need a larger performance space than a DJ, of course, and special power and logistics may be involved (stages, amplifiers and PA systems, lights, etc.).
GREEN SHOOT MEDIA
Couples want to share their union with family and friends, but they also have to feed and entertain guests after the ceremony. No reception is complete without music. So, the big decision becomes, hire a band or a DJ? Here’s a list of pros and cons to both and how ensure you get the best entertainment value for your money. BUDGET As you might guess, bands are more expensive than DJs. But live music can create a specific atmosphere that can’t be achieved by a DJ. On the other hand, DJs can tailor music to a wide variety of preferences from the original artists. Check around online to get a feel for costs and weigh your musical interests against your budget. You can always split the difference — have a band play at the ceremony and a DJ spin at the reception. THE VIBE The size and type of your wedding event will dictate the vibe. If it’s a small, quiet ceremony and brief reception, the romantic feel created by a string quartet might be the perfect background music. If it’s an all-out bash with large numbers of people, a DJ might be the right choice to meet a variety of tastes and requests. But traditional wedding bands are also adept at playing a wide variety of music and can act as a focal point for guests who don’t want to dance, according to the Wedding Wire.
MUSIC AND REVIEWS Whether you choose a band or a DJ, you’ll have some musical preferences, so ask either to send you a suggested playlist based on these choices and any music that is of particular interest (first dance, ethnic or theme music). Don’t forget to include the ability to handle requests from guests. Professional entertainers will be more than happy to also send you references and links to video of past performances. The bandleader or DJ will also act as an MC for the event, so get a feel for their personality. You might want to take in a live performance to gauge the music and rapport with an audience. AVAILABILITY AND COSTS Because top wedding bands and DJs are in demand, make sure you choose with enough advance notice to ensure availability on you wedding date. Six months in advance is good time to begin the booking process. Cost, of course, is also a factor. You’ll want to decide if they’ll play through the entire event or just the reception. Four hours of music is a good baseline to begin from when negotiating, but ask about overtime if the party goes into overdrive.

THE SHOW Make sure your band or DJ can dress and present their show appropriately. Fog machines and disco balls probably won’t work well with a black-tie event. Express this early on and share any themes or the venue location so the look of the show will match. Professional DJs and bands will always be prepared to reflect the vibe of almost any wedding ceremony or reception. THE DEAL After you’ve covered all these bases, it’s time to seal the deal with a contract. Within the contract, the specific terms of the length or the performance and any overtime costs should be covered, as well as break times, deposits and the refund policy should the show fall short of expectations. Also, if the bandleader or DJ you meet becomes ill or unavailable on the date of the event, ask who will replace them and set up a time to meet with them as well.

o protect the environment, many couples are saying “I do” to Zero-Waste weddings, focusing on sustainability for everything from floral design and dresses to invitations and food. The goal is to recycle, reuse, compost and otherwise keep anything from becoming trash in a landfill. Whether or not couples succeed in reaching the Zero-Waste goal, “they’re certainly more conscious of the ecological impact of what they do, and are aiming for something as close to that as possible,” says Rachel Sylvester, lifestyle editor at Real Simple magazine. The key to success, experts say, is letting wedding planners, vendors and your recep-

tion venue know from the start that you’re serious about going Zero Waste. Then be flexible enough to facilitate that. “Flexibility and creativity are essential,” Sylvester says. Bea Johnson, one of the pioneers of the Zero-Waste movement, says, “You’d be amazed at what you can find second-hand if you’re open-minded and really look around.” Her Zero Waste Home blog features a “bulk finder” tab that helps locate businesses selling food, drinks and other items free of plastic packaging. Focusing on quality instead of quantity also helps, Johnson says: “The smaller the party, the easier it is to make it truly Zero Waste.” Her own Zero-Waste wedding was on a yacht, so space constraints limited the guest list to 40.
Kathryn Kellogg, who wrote extensively about her Zero-Waste wedding on her Going Zero Waste blog, hosted a reception for 60 people on a shoestring budget of $200 for everything. She bought bedsheets from a thrift shop to use as tablecloths, and borrowed dishes, tables and seating from friends and family. “We were on a tight budget, so we were married at city hall with our closest family there, had a separate reception for about 60 people, and decided to save most of our money for a really great honeymoon in Maine,” she says. “Honestly, the hardest part was convincing our families to go along with it all. My biggest tip is not to stress things, and to balance expectations with reality. Ours may not have been the perfect Pinterest wedding, but that didn’t make it less fun or meaningful.”
Some Zero-Waste
wedding tips:
Make it a Day to Remember! Share your special event at...
Waverly Area Veterans Post 1300 4th Street NW, Waverly

Choose cloth napkins, and authentic tableware, glassware and plates, rather than disposables. “It’s easy enough to rent, borrow or find things at thrift shops,” says Kellogg, who used her abundant collection of Mason jars and borrowed items for her reception.
On your special day, surround yourself with love and nature’s beauty.
“Sometimes an eclectic mix of plates and glasses can be fun,” says Johnson. As for food, Kellogg says, “I took my Crock-Pot to the butcher, had him put in 4 or 5 pounds of pork shoulder, and served pulled pork and pulled jackfruit for the main dishes,” Kellogg says. She and Johnson both recommend colorful displays of fruits, vegetables or even flower petals as table centerpieces that guests can take home and enjoy.
Beautiful gardens, endless possibilities. 1927 East Orange Rd. Waterloo, IA 50701 319.226.4966 Cedarvalleyarboretum.org FALL 2019 | WEDDINGS 25
“Instead of traditional wedding gifts, we asked guests to each bring a side dish or something to drink, and contribute to our honeymoon fund,” Kellogg says.
Choose locally grown, seasonal flowers, “certainly from a carbon-footprint perspective if not a waste perspective,” says Ariella Chezar, author of the forthcoming book “Seasonal Flower Arranging: Fill Your Home with Blooms, Branches, and Foraged Materials All Year Round” (Ten Speed Press).
Other couples ask for donations to their favorite charity, or contributions toward a goal, such as a down payment on a house.
To cut back on waste, make sure your florist isn’t using foam in centerpieces and other arrangements. “It’s one of those products that is non-biodegradable and is totally unnecessary,” says Chezar.
“For my wedding invitations, I bought card stock and painted a design on the front, but these days I’d say paperlesspost.com or another e-mail option would be the best Zero-Waste option,” says Johnson.
Next, plan how your florals will be repurposed after the event, she says. Many organizations will pick up arrangements and give them to nursing homes and other institutions. If nothing else, make sure flowers are composted instead up ending up in a landfill somewhere.
If you’re set on paper though, “go for recycled paper with vegetable ink,” says Sylvester. Some papers are embedded with seeds, so guests can even soak the invitation in water and then plant it.
Like tables, chairs and linens, wedding dresses and tuxedos can be rented. Vintage or second-hand dresses are also popular, and can be tailored to size. Some designers now make Zero-Waste dresses using fabric scraps otherwise destined for the trash. “Zero-Waste weddings are a recent trend in France. This year I even designed for a client a wedding dress made from pieces of her grandmother’s wedding dress,” says Laetitia Drouet of the Frenchbased Kamelion Couture.
26 WEDDINGS | FALL 2019
“Or you can forgo cut flowers altogether in favor of potted plants, which can then be gifted or planted. There’s certainly no waste there,” Chezar says.

Centerpiece and other decor items, like flowers, fruits or vegetables, can double as gifts for guests, as can things like votive candles.

should know about
T
urns out that “coupling” doesn’t just mean “pairing” in the traditional sense, but is also a catchphrase when it comes to finances. As much as you may think no two people have ever been more in love than you are, the truth is that it could be less than smooth sailing ahead if you’re not on the same page when it comes to financial matters. “Couples have a very hard time talking about money,” Joan Atwood, a Hofstra University professor of marriage and family therapy, bemoaned on an NPR “Money Coach” segment on the issue. “I would say it’s the last taboo.” Ready to break the cycle? Read on. Set common goals. You have probably discussed this in a dreamy sort of way while dating, but turning those reveries into reality requires habitually saving to pay for them to finance your later retirement years. This is most likely one thing you may not have thought of at a time when the median ages, respectively, for brides and grooms are 29 and 31. “While people may come into a marriage with their own assets, they need to take some time after the wedding to sit down and start getting organized as a couple,” advises Andrew Peterson, a vice president at Fidelity Investments. Be transparent. There’s nothing that says you have to put all your
cash into a joint savings account – but at the very least you’d be “less than truthful” by not divulging any outstanding debts – and then figuring out, together, how to pay them down. Safely store your information. Quick: What’s your new spouse’s Social Security number? And what other vital information don’t you know if a sudden need arises? To truly mark your financial coupling, you might consider using an online service such as FidSafe.com that lets you store, access and share all your new family’s important records and documents anywhere via a web browser or iOS app. Not only is it free and simple to use with handy checklists, but even before it was officially introduced two years ago by Fidelity, Barron’s magazine gave the service five stars for being what it called “the first cloud-based safe deposit box we’ve seen that’s secure enough to organize everything from financial statements, insurance policies, and real estate records to a will, IRA benefits, and even passwords.” “With all the other things on their to-do lists, newlyweds typically don’t focus on all the important financial and other documents they need to begin married life on a solid footing,” says Peterson. “This makes things easier for them from the start, as well as through the years as they have even more joint documents to retain — including those
related to perhaps buying a house and having children.” Investigate this option. Do you both get health insurance through your employer? Congrats. You may
have just saved yourselves some money because, if it works out it’s less expensive for one of you to be on the other’s plan rather than pay for both.
