burgundy & gold Warm up your winter wedding theme with shades of burgundy and the glint of gold. The reddish-brown tones found in burgundy can be spicy, a bit exotic and irresistible, not to mention impossible to ignore! Pair with gold, and the combination is magical – glamorous, passionate and self-confident. Either color also plays well with creams and ivories for elegant appeal. Ultimately, burgundy and gold are sensuous, rich and luxurious color choices.

1 Fall into wedding season

The season can be a beautiful wedding backdrop. Play up on it by choosing a location at an apple orchard or vineyard. Decorate with leafy centerpieces, gold and copper accents, even gourds! www.pinterest.com/pin/122371314852159205/

YES Maybe NO Making (and keeping to) your guest list

W 220 E. Bremer Ave, Waverly

FOLLOW US FREE CONSULTATIONS! www.loveandlace.net • loveandlacefloral@gmail.com Call 319-352-0243 and start planning your wedding today!

edding planner Joyce Scardina Becker has a simple system for compiling wedding guest lists. Divide people into three categories: yes, maybe and no. “‘Yes’ includes parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, plus friends you see often,” said Becker, president of Events of Distinction in California. “‘Maybe’ means relatives you see occasionally, new friends, neighbors and co-workers. ‘No’ includes distant relatives and old friends you rarely see.”

Do

• Invite true friends, not people you feel obligated to invite. • Compile the guest list together. “This is a reflection of you as a couple,” said Elaine Swann, an etiquette coach based in San Diego. • Discuss the list with both sets of parents if they’re paying for the wedding. “If you’re paying for your wedding, you have complete control of your list,” Swann said. • Start early to allow for changes. • Overinvite. Wedding venues suggest you invite 10 percent more guests than you can accommodate to allow for no’s. The exception is the very small wedding, where an exact head count matters.

• Be forthright with those you haven’t invited, notes TheKnot.com wedding website. If someone you did not invite says, “I can’t wait to come to your wedding,” reply with, “We’d love to invite everyone, but, with our venue and budget, we cannot.” Then, change the subject. • Apply the same rules for second weddings.

Don’t

• Create A and B lists. “Thanks to social media, the B people will quickly learn they received their invitations much later than other people did,” Swann said. • Let your parents bully you, warns TheKnot.com, particularly if you are paying for the wedding. • Equate your guest list with a gift solicitation list by including people you know won’t come. “That’s gauche,” Swann said. • Refuse to invite a parent’s new partner because you don’t like him or her. • Invite people to the wedding but not the reception. “Imagine being the guest in the parking lot who realizes everyone else is headed to the party, but you’re not invited,” Swann said. • Send online invitations.

• Allow single guests 18 or older to bring a date.

• Share your list on social media. It may be seen by uninvited acquaintances, and it may hurt feelings.

• Say “adults only” on the invitation if you do not want children at your wedding. “Then don’t make exceptions,” Swann said.

• Assume a guest is a “yes” or “no.” “Be prepared for them to come, no matter the circumstances,” Parrish said.

• If your partner has a large family, accept his larger list. “You’re marrying a family, not just one person,” Swann said.

• Bottom line: “It comes down to respect and consideration of your guests,” Swann said. “With each decision you make, think about how they will feel.”

• Handle each guest list faux pas individually. If you can, ask a close relative to handle the calls.

Something borrowed, something chewed … If your plan is to include your furry, four-legged significant other – your dog – in your wedding ceremony, there are a few things you need to consider to make sure it’s a tail-wagging good time, according to the American Kennel Club.

Beautiful outside ceremony site with an exclusive private club atmosphere and picturesque views of the golf course. Available seating up to 340 guests. Outside verandas available and competitive pricing. Best wedding location in the Cedar Valley! For more information and dates available contact our

Events Coordinator, Ana Hanisch, at Does your dog handle crowds well?

If your pooch is easily stressed by changes in its environment or being pawed by strangers , it’s probably not a good idea to include him or her in the ceremony. But if your pet is well-behaved, then it will make for a memorable day. You may want to consider a refresher training course so your dog will remain calm and quiet during the ceremony. Also, consider if you want the pet to wear a wedding costume (and please, don’t make it too ridiculous a get-up. Dogs have dignity, too.)

Is the venue pet-friendly?

It would be awful to arrive with Fido on a leash and learn that he won’t be allowed inside.

Make sure your photographer knows your dog is part of the wedding party, and that the photographer is comfortable around dogs.

Plan in advance which photos you want to have taken with your dog.

Choose and make sure someone in

your wedding party is available to hold the leash while you’re busy posing. This person should be armed with treats and baggies for cleanup.

Consider YOUR temperament.

Sorry, bridezillas: This option is not for you. Dogs don’t understand the seriousness of a wedding ceremony, so unless you can maintain a sense of humor about the possibility of something going awry, leave Fido out of the festivities — for your sake and everyone else’s.  Source:

A well-rounded registry

W

edding registries are like letters to Santa, except they're for adults. But instead of Saint Nick and his elves, your wedding guests do the giving. And instead of toys, you ask for grown-up things like serving dishes and monogrammed towels. Okay, maybe a few toys. Margarita machine, anyone? Building a well-rounded registry can be difficult. How many place settings is too many? Is the range of price points wide enough? Do you really need that mini doughnut maker? Sarah Bratholt, a Crate & Barrel spokeswoman who oversees gift-registry management, says many digitally savvy couples are taking advantage of online registries, but she recommends that they also go to stores in person. "We have them do a mental walk-through of their house," she says. Couples should ask themselves: In the kitchen, what type of knives set do we want? Moving into the dining room, what type of dinnerware do we want? It's important, Bratholt says, to start with the basics such as plates, glasses, forks and knives — "I recommend going for a classic look that represents both of your styles. Then add in the fun pieces that can be more trendy." And register for more than you think you'll need, because your family might grow or you'll want to throw a party with all of your new stuff, "but you won't have enough forks to get you through dessert," she says. If space is tight, consider boxed sets — "12 plates, bowls, cups all in a box that you can store in a pantry or closet," Brathold says. When making a list, she suggests keeping an eye out for bonuses with certain brands. "They will give you extra gifts when you register for or receive certain items off your registry," she says. "Who doesn't want more gifts?" And it never hurts to get advice from those who walked the aisle before you. With wedding season in full swing, we asked four couples in various stages of matrimony about how they crafted their registries (or wish they had). Among our findings: Kitchenware reigned supreme among newlyweds and longtimers alike; not all gadgets are made alike; and big-ticket, well-made items shouldn't be shied away from.  Source:

T

he wedding hashtag has quickly become a standard part of millennial matrimony. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social networks automatically organize photos posted with a specific hashtag into a feed, giving attendees and those who couldn't make it an easy way to see the pictures everyone is taking. The wedding hashtag trend has grown. For many, crowd-sourced pictures aren't replacing professional photographers. U.S. weddings are a $55 billion industry, according to market research firm IBISWorld. It's a life event Americans are willing to splurge on, and hashtag management could become the next add-on for an already expensive occasion. Some companies have begun to monetize the wedding hashtag. For $399, photo site Eversnap will print instructional cards for guests, create a live slideshow during the event, and apply a custom watermark to all the photos. A second company, PastBook, compiles photos from hashtags shared privately or publicly on the Web to create a physical book of wedding photos. WeddingWire and Zola, two of the largest wedding sites, host guides to teach people how to create hashtags and retrieve the photos later. WeddingWire also offers a hashtag generator, which Barranca used to come up with ideas. The site's suggestions include #Barranca4life and #BarrancaPartyof2. The companies are looking at hashtag services as a way to draw in customers; the tools are currently free. WeddingWire's hashtag generator has been an effective marketing tool. Since it went online five months ago, it's been used by 600,000 couples, according to the company. This is a lot, considering that just 2 million Americans get married each year, according to government data.

Zola's app, which is mainly used for wedding registries and gifts, now has a feature that culls photos tagged with a particular hashtag from around the Web and presents them as a sort of digital scrapbook. About half of Zola's users have experimented with the feature, according to the company. "It's really a mobile 2.0 version of the Polaroid cameras on every wedding table," says Shan-Lyn Ma, chief executive officer at Zola. "This kind of thing will replace the traditional wedding album." A widely Instagrammed wedding isn't for everyone. Some couples request that attendees stay off phones for the duration of the event, urging guests to live in the moment. Others have rules about pictures: While a professional photographer will select the most flattering photos, as well as edit and airbrush the images to perfection, a guest with a cell phone might capture attendees in a drunken and sweaty state. Debates about etiquette have raged on the Internet, with professional photographers warning about how things can go very wrong. Resistance from some wedding purists hasn't slowed the rise of the hashtag. WeddingWire says it is seeing so much interest in the hashtag generator that it's expanding investment in the product, according to Sonny Ganguly, the company's chief marketing officer. For example, WeddingWire needs to refine the tool's recommendation to prevent two couples from seeing the same suggestion. "We'll definitely need to evolve the algorithm," Ganguly says. And those with hashtag fatigue should brace for what WeddingWire is working on next: tools to generate hashtags for bachelor and bachelorette parties.  Source:

iranda Rowenhorst likes to tease that she started dating Collin Barker for his chicken curry. “He makes an amazing chicken curry,” she says, laughing. That spicy dish — and feelings that each had found their soul mate — fed their love for each other. It quickly deepened into a marriage proposal that took place in a wintry Minneapolis sculpture garden when Collin got down on one knee and popped the question. The snow began to fall as Miranda gave her answer. Their six-month engagement culminated in a May 31 spring wedding at the Rotary Reserve in Cedar Falls. “Dreamy is the word that comes to mind, really romantic” is how Miranda describes the wedding, and she enlisted help from wedding planner Joan Ney to pull it off. “She was wonderful. I sat down with her and told her about the picture I had in my mind of what I wanted, and she captured it so beautifully. It took so much stress out of planning,” the bride recalls, particularly because the couple now live in Minneapolis. Her wedding gown “is the most beautiful dress I’ve ever owned,” Miranda says. The Mori Lee style 2674 came from An Elegant Affair in Cedar Falls, a strapless sweetheart bodice with floral lace drifting down to a voluminous layered skirt. “It was absolutely perfect, and I fell in love with it.”

The bride carried her favorite succulents and roses tucked into a cascading, textural bouquet, created by florists at the College Square Hy-Vee Store. Bridesmaids wore long, strapless flowing dresses in different, soft colors, and groomsmen wore black dress pants, gray vests and black ties. Miniature succulents were tucked into lapels as boutonnieres. The groom wore a bow tie with his black vest. In a wonderful quirk of fate, Miranda won a contest for the services of wedding photographer Jessica Shae of Dallas, Texas. She flew to Iowa to photograph the couple’s wedding. At Rotary Reserve, the couple chose as their ceremony setting a clearing surrounded by five pine trees that created a natural cathedral. The bride’s father built the arbor-altar where they exchanged vows, and a pair of wooden doors were lettered with the proclamation: “What God has joined together, let no man separate.” Collin’s most memorable wedding moments included his first look at his bride. “Then when your dad was walking you down the aisle,” he tells Miranda. “I was excited and overwhelmed. You looked stunning. The most memorable part was that all of our friends and family were there. Everything was perfect." The couple recited traditional vows, and as their wedding singer performed, the bridesmaids and groomsmen surrounded the couple and prayed for them. “That was one of the things I remember the most because it was so powerful and beautiful. It was amazing,” Miranda says. Inside the reception space, marquee lights cast a glow over 300 guests seated at round tables. Centerpieces were simple but stunning – fresh flowers and succulents in bottles and hollowed-out tree stumps for a rustic effect. “I loved that raw, romantic look, and one my favorite parts was that Collin and I sat on a red settee together. It was nice to cuddle up against him instead of sitting in separate chairs.” Hy-Vee catered the buffet of home-style comfort food, and an espresso bar added another element of fun. Flowers and succulents festooned an old barn door that formed a garden-like backdrop for the wedding cake. The four-layer confection created by Cakes by Isabel was decorated with succulents and flowers made from sugar. Collin and Miranda took dance lessons and performed their wedding dance to Brandi Carlisle’s “Hearts Content.” After the dance, the couple left for a honeymoon in Portugal and Spain and returned with a bottle of wine to save for celebrating their first wedding anniversary. w

he glistening glimmer of fresh snow, a brisk chill in the air – there’s just something magical about a winter wedding. “I wanted a winter wonderland for my wedding, and I also knew if we got married in the winter, we could take a nice trip to someplace warm every year for our anniversary,” says Emily Haselhorst. She married the love of her life, Taylor Nelson, on Feb. 28, 2015. “I’m a design major, so I’m into the details. Everything turned out the way I wanted it to, and it was the most special day of my life. We got a dusting of snow the night before our wedding, which just added to the atmosphere.” The bride chose light blue, white and silver for a frosty color combination. After trying on 24 dresses, she found the perfect fit and shimmering look she sought in a Maggie Sottero gown. Bridesmaids wore light, flowing dresses, and groomsmen were dressed in black tuxedos. Her aunts, who formerly owned a flower shop, created the bouquets. White orchids, lilies and roses with silver leaf and jewels accents carried out the wintry theme. Men wore white rose boutonnières. The wedding took place at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City. “We didn’t have to do much decorating because the church is so beautiful, just a gigantic white rose and orchid centerpiece. It was a very formal, full Catholic wedding with the pipe organ,” Emily says. As she walked down the aisle, Emily noticed Taylor’s lips were quivering. “It was pretty cute. I was excited. I didn’t cry, I was trying to compose myself with my dad beside me. But it melted my heart, and my heart was pounding.” The reception took place at the luxurious Marina Inn in Sioux City. Emily did the winter wonderland decorations herself, incorporating snowflake ornaments, diamond crystals and spray-painted tree branches. White lilies, roses, orchids, carnations, hydrangeas, daisies and spider mums and twigs were covered in artificial snow. Chandeliers glittered from the ceiling above tables decorated set for a sit-down dinner for 615 guests. LED lights shone from beneath piles of artificial snow on each tables for a warm glow.

BRIDESMAIDS & TUXEDOS

Dressing Memories for over 50 Years!

Wedding guests dined on steak, garlic buttered potatoes and green beans. The snowflake-inspired wedding cake was placed on a stand set in ice. Strands of lights gave it the glow of an ice sculpture.   Taylor loved when the maid of honor and best man arrived at the reception, having “switched outfits for their grand entrance,” he says. At one point in the dinner, Emily looked around the reception hall and took it all in. “I thought, ‘We really made it. I’m going to be with him forever. This is the most perfect day.'" They danced to “Her Man” by Gary Allan, and three days later left for their honeymoon in Mexico. w Text | Melody Parker

hen Caitlin Wessels closed her eyes, she imagined getting married under the moonlight in an enchanted forest. Her real fairytale wedding to Kyle Forness took place Aug. 8, and it was everything she dreamed — and more. The couple exchanged vows in a traditional ceremony at Waterloo’s St. Edwards' Catholic Church, followed by a reception at the Hilton Garden Inn in Cedar Falls, surrounded by their families and friends and a setting inspired by a moonlit forest. Caitlin and Kyle have been together nine years. Although they began dating in high school, they put their courtship on hold while she studied abroad. When Caitlin returned from Argentina, the couple realized their feelings for each other had not changed. He proposed to her with a mix of romance and humor while she was completing a pharmaceutical residency in Sioux City. “When I walked into my apartment, there were rose petals in the shape of a heart, a bottle of wine and signs. One said, ‘Will you marry me? If the answer is yes, turn around.’ The other said, ‘If no, take the rock and throw it through the window, and run.’ There was chocolate near the ‘yes’ sign, in case he needed to influence my choice. I turned around, and he got down on one knee and proposed. It was his birthday … he wanted that day to be special.” Her perfect dress was a lacy, strapless Allure Coutour ball gown with a sweetheart neckline, buttons sweeping down the back and down the train and a belt sparkling with Swarovski crystals. She wore her hair up, dressed with crystals and a frothy tulle hat veil. Her blush-toned shoes were from Badgley Mischka. Bridesmaids wore blush chiffon floor-length dresses with ruched waists from Mori Lee, while groomsmen wore black Allure tuxes. Kyle wore an ivory tie and vest for contrast. Wedding bouquets and floral arrangements were created by florist Fran Newsom at Crossroads Hy-Vee. A woodsy theme, including ferns and moss, was incorporated into a mix of flowers, including roses. “She captured it exactly. For me, it wasn’t a matter of colors or types of flowers, but keeping with the theme,” Caitlin says. At the church, large ferns cascaded down the stairs to the altar, inset with lanterns for a twinkling effect. What Kyle remembers most about the day is “turning around and seeing how beautiful” Caitlin was at the first look. Adrie Essa, the bride’s sister, sang during the unity candle lighting, and her uncle Klaus Hinrichsen and cousin Tom Hinrichsen played bagpipes as the newlyweds left the church. The Hilton Garden Inn’s Grand Ballroom was transformed into a romantic enchanted forest with accessories by Bash.

Three different centerpieces were used: some tables had tall centerpieces with ferns and twigs, with flower-and-fern bases; another featured a dark gold hurricane with candle and flowers; and a third was a bronze bowl with flowers, grasses and twigs. Bronze gnomes were scattered about at the tables. “We felt like we were in a forest under the moonlight and stars celebrating the beginning of our life together,” says Caitlin. Guests were served a sit-down dinner of salmon or rib-eye steak at tables set with gold linens, gold chargers and olive-green napkins. The cake was decorated with a fondant tree, flowers, mushrooms and ferns. At the base, a gnome popped his head out of a fairy door. Layers featured devil’s chocolate Chambord with chocolate ganache filling, tequila rose with strawberry cream filling and white with raspberry filling. Hilltop Weddings of Waterloo created a backdrop for the reception, and Barb Brainard acted as “day of” coordinator to make sure everything was on track. “People keep talking about how great a time they had at the wedding. I think a lot of this is because of the great DJ, the gorgeous flowers, Barb and Bash Rentals setting up the place beautifully to set the mood and get people in the right mindset," Caitlin explains After the bridal couple danced to “Our Song” by Elton John, the dance floor was packed until the reception ended. The newlyweds honeymooned in Barbados. w Text | Melody Parker

chris and allie May 16, 2015 Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta at the Riviera Nayarit, Mexico

All-inclusive wedding package included ceremony, photography, flowers, hors d’oeuvres, reception and dance

llie Faas and Chris Bright wanted their wedding to have an easy-going, laidback vibe. So what could be more relaxing than azure blue waters rolling up on a gorgeous beach and a vivid sunset enveloping the whole scene? That’s why the couple chose a destination wedding at the Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta at the Riviera Nayarit, Mexico. They were wed May 16, 2015. The former Iowans live in California now, and family and friends are spread all over the country, so a vacation resort seemed like a great place for everyone to gather. It was surprisingly easy to organize, too, particularly because Allie’s mom, Judi, is a travel agent and owner of Journey to Paradise Travel in Evansdale. She gave them brochures to look through, and since Chris is a musician, the Hard Rock seemed like the perfect choice. The couple chose an all-inclusive wedding package, working long-distance with the resort’s wedding specialist to make sure everything came off without a hitch. With the beach as the backdrop, they chose simple white chairs and flowers for the setting. “The ocean was our decoration … . It was super-easy and stress-free. They give you the wedding packages, you choose what you want — maybe 40 minutes of decisionmaking and that was it,” recalls Allie. Her wedding dress came from the Leanne Marshall collection. Marshall is a California designer whose work was featured on the TV show “Project Runway.” “I don’t like beading or bling, and I wanted something a little unique. The dress was very lightweight, and I fell in love with the skirt. It reminded me of waves,” Allie says. She went barefoot on the beach — “perfect because I don’t like heels.”

She carried a pretty bouquet with green orchids and white and blush flowers. Bridesmaids wore blush-toned dresses, while the groomsmen wore white shirts and gray pants. Allie admits to worrying about the humidity’s effect on her curly hair, so she opted for a trial run with the resort’s hairdresser. “It wasn’t too expensive, I knew I wanted my hair up, and it turned out fine, even though it was really hot at sunset." Forty guests attended the sunset ceremony. “Chris actually proposed to me on the beach at sunset. I’m not a corny person, but I thought it was romantic to do it at that time.” Hors d’oeuvres were served after the wedding, followed by dinner. The barbecue-infused menu included ribs, and guests were served slices of cappuccino-flavored wedding cake with classic Mexican whipped-cream frosting. After dinner, everyone danced. “Chris deejayed the wedding. We did a playlist ahead of time, asking guests to add to the playlist when we sent out our ‘save the date’ cards.” Ultimately Allie and Chris loved their destination wedding, and their guests were able to enjoy it as a vacation, too. “That’s what we told our guests — ‘think of it as a vacation, and at the end we’ll get married.’ We were engaged for 1 1/2 years because we wanted to give people who really wanted to come the time to save up and attend. “It was fun getting our family and friends together, and it was a beautiful wedding,” she adds. w Text | Melody Parker
