red 6 1

‌If you’re a bride who loves red, it says you’re impossible to ignore and passionate about your pursuits. Red is the color of passion, love and heart — all perfect sentiments for your wedding day. The color can be fresh and vital when paired with bright colors like the right shade of turquoise, or very regal and Old World accented with gold, and who can deny the power of black and red or cool classic combo of ivory and red. 1. Gather red carnations and red roses for a surprisingly elegant bouquet. 2. Let open-toed, silver-accented red satin high heels peep out from under your wedding gown for a bit of derring-do. 3. Here’s a gift idea for your bridesmaids: Red satin clutches. 4. Tie your wedding bands to a red pillow to be carried down the aisle. 5. A charming red floral stencil adorns these top layers of a wedding cake. 6. Fiery red stones and a bit of bling can fill a sweetheart or strapless neckline.

gold 3

Let the luxurious glow of gold warm your wedding. Go for the gold and let the warmth of this color give your wedding an air of luxury and sophistication. 1. Pink, gold and ivory makes for a classically elegant bouquet. The gold comes from antique brooches tucked in amongst the flowers. 2. Gold Lulus bridesmaid dress. 3. Treat your earlobes to glittering gold and diamond earrings. 4. Let high-heeled gold pumps glitter beneath your wedding gown. 5. Golden fondant swirls adorn a wedding cake. 6. This wedding invitation manages to be both whimsical and upscale.

Fresh ways to use china ‌Sometimes collecting all the pieces to your cherished wedding china may take more time than you think. And if you inherited your collection from your mother or grandmother as a sentimental wedding gift, the pattern name could easily have been forgotten. Dinneware giant Replacements, Ltd., offers a free pattern identification service, and may have pieces you need to complete your set. Replacements’ designer, Julie Robbins also offers fun ways to refresh that treasured pattern. Start by looking for complementing patterns that fit your lifestyle. “You might start with a piece that you

use on a regular basis, such as a salad plate, then build around that piece by adding patterns that pull out a color, shape or feeling that accentuates the current pattern you already own,” adds Robbins. And who says your dinnerware is just for eating? Find fun ways to use it around your home. “Think outside the dining room,” says Robbins. Use tea cups to hold doodads in any room of your house, while tureens and teapots make wonderful flower vases. Use old, pretty serving pieces, such as an oval vegetable or sugar bowl to hold soap or flowers in powder rooms or bathrooms to make the space more inviting. Source: Brandpoint

Connect with

smart jewelry ‌Jewelry has signified the bonds between people since the ancient Egyptians created the wedding band. But the digital revolution is quickly converting jewelry from a symbol of connection to wireless ways to stay connected. Rings, watches, pendants — even cufflinks — have been transformed into miniature electronic devices that keep us in touch with people, including ourselves. This merger of fashion and function is catching on fast with consumers, and make wonderful gifts for a bridal couple to exchange. According to Gartner Inc., an information technology and research advisory firm, purchases of wearable smart devices will increase 16 percent in 2016, with smartwatch sales alone predicted to rise a whopping 66 percent. Today, nearly all the major tech companies compete in the smartwatch market, including Apple, Google, Microsoft, Motorola and Samsung. Meanwhile, some traditional watchmakers — such as Tag Heuer — have developed their own high-tech timepieces. Top designers are also collaborating with high-tech developers to create smart rings, bracelets, necklaces and other fine and fashion jewelry. FitBit, for instance, offers a line of fitness trackers conceived by Tory Burch, a well-known women’s wear designer. The technology is embedded in embossed metallic pendants and bracelets. PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT‌

Since smart jewelry could be a major jewelry investment— second only, perhaps, to an engagement ring — it’s important to adequately protect it with insurance. Most homeowners insurance policies cover jewelry to some extent. In many cases, however, your coverage may be limited. Plus, a jewelry claim could affect the status of your entire policy. That’s why it’s important to evaluate your insurance options. Typical warranties and protection plans won’t reimburse you if your smart jewelry disappears under mysterious circumstances — meaning you’re not sure whether it was lost or stolen. The best jewelry insurers, such as Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, a leader in jewelry insurance since 1913, will cover loss in such circumstances. They will also repair or replace the item through the jeweler or manufacturer of your choice and a loss. Source: Brandpoint 12 | wcfcourier.com/weddings

WEDDING DRESS TRENDS

Ines de Santo WEDDINGS Fall/Winter 2016 | 13

dress trends

‌ rom body-hugging F gowns to full-skirted extravanganzas,

the 2017 bridal gown collections are a mix of high drama, sexy silhouettes and sweetly charming print dresses. Bridal designers like Ines Di Santo, Reem Acra, Oscar de la Renta and Christian Siriano have their stylish fingers on the pulse of the latest wedding dress trends. Here’s a look at what they put on the runway for spring 2017.

Ines Di Santo ‌

The Ines Di Santo Bridal Spring 2017 collection was a sexy runway dominated by sheers holding lots of floral creations in place. Romance meets sensuality is how the Toronto-based designer likes it. “I went very soft, romantic. You can see through the layers of the lace, the legs, the tulle,” she said. Like other designers, Di Santo included fit-and-flare looks along with sheaths, A-line silhouettes, halter necks and princess ball gowns. At the core of any bridal collection, Di Santo said, is how the dress speaks to budding love in marriage. “It’s so important,” she said. “You can live without many things but you cannot live without love.”

Reem Acra ‌

Reem Acra dresses have an abundance of drama in encrusted sheer overlays and a variety of sleeve options, including a web design on a snug pair that ended just above the elbow. The design, almost twig-like, is carried through to the rest of the full-skirted look. Many of Reem Acra’s dress tops were molded at the chest, bustier style, while she played with the lower halves. She put a twist on some trains, creating them to detach and also be used as veils. In an interview, she called the collection “very airy, very light.”

Christian Siriano‌

After a smaller, capsule collection for the famed bridal shop, Siriano is teaming with Kleinfeld again on a broader range. His gowns range from this strapless lace overlay ball gown to dresses with sleeves — long lacy ones on a column gown and a structured off-the-shoulder pair in satin, embellished with tulle and strings of pearl. And hem lengths range from well above the knee in an appliqued mini to a fitted tea length with an ornate high neck and dramatic train.

Oscar de la Renta

Designer Peter Copping is making his mark gradually at the storied Oscar de la Renta label, with a mind toward both preserving his predecessor’s legacy and modernizing the label in his own way. Some of the gowns featured the sumptuous, extravagant embroidery for which the house is justly famous, and others featured much subtler embroidery for a more modern look. Source: Associated Press

Children at weddings It’s your decision whether children are welcome at your wedding. Parents may make assumptions that their kids are welcome. Make it clear on the invitation that kids can come by including the phrase “and family.” If not, be firm but polite that children under 12 can’t be accommodated.

Experience the Hilton Garden Inn Difference.... And Love the Moment

If kids are invited, they’ll sit with their parents at the ceremony, but make sure they’re at the same table or nearby during the reception. Unsupervised children can quickly create chaos — not what you want at your party. Hire a chaperone to organize fun activities or set up to show movie discs for children during the reception.

Consider ages. The younger the child, the more difficult they may be to control. Three to 8 is the average age for these roles, so they’re old enough to follow instructions (sort of) and fathom (a little) of what’s going on.

Discuss the idea with the children’s parents. Ask them if they think their child can handle it, and make sure they’re comfortable with the idea. Being in a wedding can be expensive, no matter how small the role. It’s a nice idea to make their clothing a gift.

Let them help pick out their outfit. You can guide their selections, but it gives a child a sense of control if they can pick out the ribbon that goes around the waist of the dress or the tie to wear with the ring bearer’s vest.

Talk about the wedding and make it sound fun.

Have a few practices … walking down the aisle, tossing the flower petals, carrying the ring pillow. If you know the song that will play as they walk down the aisle in the wedding, let the parents know so they can download it to practice along with.

A w d s a w o d q n to o v m w

D

Who doesn’t think the flower girl and ring bearer are the cutest ones in the wedding party? Just the sight of this dynamic duo is enough to make all the guests say “aaww.”

them, and the setting is unfamiliar. No surprise that these pint-sized bridal attendants are known to throw tantrums and grow roots on aisle runners.

But kids can be unpredictable. The formal clothes are hot and uncomfortable, strangers are staring at

So here are a few ideas for getting them down the aisle with smiles, not tears and frowns:

6

Ask parents … what you can n do to make sure children are calm and s, well-behaved on the wedf ding day. A e quiet spot to ll nap, someone to help out he or even a video game or movie to watch. y d e

7 Dress them at the last minute to keep them clean and crisp.

8

9

10

Don’t freak out if Janey won’t let go of her doll, or doesn’t want to wear a hair wreath. It’s no big deal. If a child refuses to walk at the last minute, don’t force the issue.

Always have a familiar adult giving them a helping hand — “walk to Mommy” is a good incentive to truck down the aisle. Some children may burst into tears or stop halfway down the aisle. Your guests will smile, Mom will be prepared to rescue the moment, and all will be well.

Bribery works. Nothing motivates like a gift, or the promise of some goodie or other that awaits them at the end of the aisle after the ceremony. Give them plenty of praise, too.

‌“S

omething old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,” goes the saying. For her marriage to Jonathan Van Ness, Alexandra Ober – Alex, to her friends, satisfied two of those traditions with a sentimental detail in her wedding dress.

A swath of lace — something old — was snipped from her great-grandmother’s wedding gown — something borrowed from the dress first worn in 1916 — and stitched to her own wedding gown. “I like things that aren’t very traditional, not the typical wedding things, but I wanted to implement some family history into the wedding — sort of vintage-y mixed with new trends,” says Alex, who grew up in the Cedar Valley and now works for a national travel company. Her mom, Nancy, actually wore the dress at her wedding in 1984, so the lace carries a lot of emotion and nostalgia. Alex found a Justin Alexander gown that fit her perfectly and that she could add a train made

from the lace off the bottom of her great-grandmother’s dress. Alex and Jonathan were wed April 2 at Vista West Ranch in Dripping Springs, Texas, not

far from their home in Austin. The beautiful grounds and rustic “Pinterest-worthy” barn were settings for both wedding and reception. A cocktail hour took place

outdoors before the wedding with blue sky and Texas Hill Country as the backdrop. Although they didn’t concoct a special cocktail, the couple offered Hubert’s Lemonade and WEDDINGS Fall/Winter 2016 | 21

Hanson Soda & Ginger Beer. Instead of a guest book, family and friends wrote their good wishes on stacks of Jenga-style blocks, which was later moved to the barn. Approximately 120 guests watched the bride walk down the aisle accompanied by her father. Eight bridesmaids and seven groomsmen attended the couple. Several bridesmaids wore dresses in shades of blue, while others were dressed in neutral long gowns with gold accents, all styles they chose as personally flattering. Groomsmen wore light gray suits with dark blue ties, and the

groom wore a blue suit. A friend officiated at the wedding, which Alex describes as “not very traditional. We had a niece and nephew read a poem by e.e. cummings, then went into our vows that we’d written to each other. We took a unity shot of saki because Jonathan would take me on dates for sushi every Sunday, and we decided that would be fun to incorporate.” The couple dated for nearly 8 years before Jonathan popped the question. Wedding rings were custom-made at Roth Jewelers in Waterloo. Reception decorations took advantage of the barn’s natural beauty and played with seasonal colors from the Texas countryside’s blooming bluebonnets and other wild flowers. In lieu of table numbers, Alex named tables after places the couple has been. “I used hotel names, and to make it make sense for guests seated at a particular table, there was a picture of us at that location on the table,” she explains. Guests wore bibs stenciled with phrases like “Marriage is messy” and “I got sauced” while dining on Texas barbecue and fixings. Desserts were from Tiny Pies, and the couple

fed each other a pie instead of wedding cake. At each place setting was a Mason jar of homemade salsa made by Nancy Ober. Father and daughter danced to Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely,” and Alex and Jonathan shared their first dance as a married couple to Beyonce’s “One Plus One.” In addition to dancing to music by a disc jockey, guests could play bags, too. “It was fantastic to have all of our family and friends together and watch them make new friendships. Looking back, I loved the camaraderie. It went so quickly that I tried to be in the moment and take every single second in. These were all our favorite people in the world,” Alex adds. The couple spent a long weekend in Costa Rica for their honeymoon.

winter wedding

Planning a winter wedding You don’t necessarily want your winter wedding to be holiday-oriented, but undoubtedly the warmth of shades of red and crispness of green are flattering for the season. You can also take the opposite approach and choose a frosty color scheme of silver, white and crystal or go for luxury with gold. FLOWERS

Red roses, calla lilies, and amaryllis are decidedly winter wedding flowers, but if you step outside the flower box, you’ll find a variety of options for winter blooms. What’s hot now: Fuller flowers, such as white hydrangeas and soft ranunculuses, crystal embellishments, pine cones, berries and evergreens.

MUSIC‌

A pianist, violinist or other musician is elegant as guests dine, but why not jazz things up? What’s hot now: Consider hiring an a capella quartet to sing background music at your reception. Have the group sing your favorite jazz and pop songs to set a welcoming and festive tone for the evening. If you’re into a more classical sound, hire a cellist and ask that Vivaldi’s “Winter” be included in the repertoire. COCKTAIL HOUR‌

Warm apple cider and hot chocolate …ho hum. What’s hot now: White hot chocolate served in espresso cups, eggnog in punch glasses, cocktails served in glasses rimmed with sugar crystals. THE CAKE‌

Wedding cakes are the showstoppers at winter weddings. What’s hot now: Vintage-style cakes dusted with edible silver powder, cakes with molded white chocolate designs and lacy looks. Source: theknot.com and staff

“You can live without many things but you cannot live without love.” P14 September 2016 CEDAR VALLEY BUSINESS MONTHLY

Alex & Jonathan

‌“S

omething old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,” goes the saying.
