One of the most fragrant flowers of spring, lilac, is also one of the most romantic colors for a spring or summer wedding. Purple is considered the rainbow’s most complex color, according to color experts. Lilac is no exception, because these flowers can range from the softest pastels to deepest red-violet. That gives a bride lots of directions to go if she choosing it for one of her wedding colors. Pair lilac with: Dusty blue, soft pinks, darker shades of purple, soft yellow, mint, greens, black and white, silver. Fresh lilacs in your wedding? Know that they don’t last long without wilting. Brides who chose these fragrant beauties probably have a source for scoring lilacs cut fresh from the garden. To make them last longer, cut them early in the day using a very sharp knife or pruning shears. Before cutting, prepare a bucket or vase of lukewarm water with floral preservative. Make the cut a few inches above a leaf or bud node and harvest a longer stem than you need to allow for trimming. Remove any foliage and immediately put the flower stem in the lukewarm water. If you decide to trim, keep the stem underwater and use a sharp knife or scissors for a clean cut.
1. Lilacs adorn these wedding cupcakes—a pretty, romantic look, but remove the flowers before eating! 2. A luscious flowery, almost ruffly cake with a lilac ombre effect. 3. OPI “You’re such a Buda-Pest” nail lacquer 4. Tulle lends even more romance to this short, strapless bridesmaid’s dress in a powdery lilac shade. 5. A pale amethyst stone makes these earrings perfect for a lilac-themed wedding. 6. Invitations decorated with purple flowers.

Brides who want yellow as one of their colors see it as happy, joyful, energetic, outgoing and as friendly as a puppy. Color experts say yellow advances to the eye so that it appears the “largest” of all colors. And it’s one color that looks brighter as it becomes more saturated. Choose from light pastel yellow, vivid yellow, ambered yellows, lemon yellow, banana yellow, sunshine yellow … and you’ll imbue your special day with hope and optimism. For a trendy look, pair shades of yellow with shades of green, orange, blue, gray, white, red, aqua, black, plum or pink. 1. Introduce your color in unexpected ways, like the groom’s socks. 2. A topaz pendant necklace makes an elegant yellow statement. 3. Button and string turn a strip of yellow fabric into a napkin holder. 4. A flirty yellow bridesmaids’ dress, Alfred Angelo, style 7206. 5. Show off your pedicure in the canary-yellow Nina “Ella” sandal. 6. Creamy orchids adorn a yellow tiered wedding cake.

eddings are the ultimate personal statement for couples. But there’s been a shift away W from the “all about us” mentality to embrace a broader view. While couples still want to customize and personalize their big day, they also want to give back. The Knot’s Wedding Trends Report takes a look at the hippest moves:

For food and flowers, opt for in season and locally sourced. Earth-friendly invitations can be made by printing with soy-based inks on recycled paper. For place cards, forget the paper and have a calligrapher write each guest’s name on stones that can be kept as personalized favors afterward. Once the guests have gone home, don’t toss the flowers. Donate to a hospital or nursing home to spread joy to others.

From cash to camping gear and even museum memberships, couples can ask for just about anything today-including supporting a cause close to heart. Charity registries are on the rise.

When it comes to entertainment, couples are pulling out all the stops to entertain their guests. Aerialists, acrobats, live painters and even choirs have made their way into weddings. If that’s too trendy, try a traditional route with music, but pair it with a performance-like a classical quartet and ballerinas in tutus.

Want to turn your indoor venue into a lush garden, but don’t have the budget for thousands of flowers and potted trees? Try a new projection technology called image mapping that allows you to transform a space with lighting and moving pictures.

Today, with many couples fi nancing their own weddings, personalized playlists run the gamut, from music played during the ceremony to a first dance song, said Jill Sieracki, senior features editor of Brides magazine. Open, non-gender-specific love songs also appeal to contemporary couples. Tastes change with the times, and so do popular wedding songs (the Baroque classic Pachelbel’s Canon has shown real staying power). Keeping many choices in mind, here are a few songs that speak to modern lovebirds that are well on their way — if no there already — to becoming evergreen staples.
“So You Think You Can Dance” contestant Brittany Cherry, who was clad in a white dress. The midtempo guitar- and piano-fueled song, which won two Grammys, including 2015 song of the year, is a favorite wedding tune. ADELE — “MAKE YOU FEEL MY LOVE” Backed by a steady piano melody, mega-hit-maker Adele’s 2008 cover of Bob Dylan’s 1997 song “Make You Feel My Love” doesn’t just ooze melancholy romance; it showcases her instantly recognizable soulful voice.
JOHN LEGEND — “ALL OF ME” Singing “’Cause all of me/ Loves all of you/ Love your curves and all your edges/ All your perfect imperfections,” Grammy-winning R&B artist Legend doesn’t just channel his love for his wife (and model) Chrissy Teigen, he proclaims it.
LONESTAR — “AMAZED” With lyrics such as, “I wanna spend the rest of my life/ With you by my side,” Lonestar’s 1999 twangy power ballad “Amazed” has become a favorite for country music lovers. Singer-songwriter Jack Johnson’s mellow acoustic ode “Better Together” for cake-cutting or a processional.
ED SHEERAN — “THINKING OUT LOUD” British singer-songwriter Sheeran made a splash when his video for 2014’s “Thinking Out Loud” debuted, featuring him sashaying with
ETTA JAMES — “AT LAST” With its sweeping violin melody and James pouring her heart out, “At Last” has a timeless quality. Short and direct, its poetic lyrics muse about finding and keeping love.

Nicole & JJ On their final evening of a romantic November getaway at the Gran Bahia Principe Tulum Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico, JJ Floss lured his girlfriend, Nicole Thien, out to a large fountain under the guise of taking photos. To her surprise, he dropped to one knee and proposed. Nicole recalls it as the greatest moment of her life. Two years later, on June 18, 2016, the couple exchanged wedding vows at the same resort where they had become engaged. “It has such meaning for us, and it was the perfect place for us to get married. We love the setting, the beach and the water,” says Nicole, a blog coach who founded the lifestyles blog, uniquelywomen. net/, and operates a social media boutique. Her parents are travel agents, as well, so planning a destination wedding seemed all in a day’s work. “We worked with the resort’s wedding planner. They’re trained to work with people long-distance, and we arranged for our guests to stay in the same area. Eighty-five family and friends came,” the bride recalls. “We wanted a small wedding where the people and the setting would be the focus.” The bride wore an A-line gown WEDDINGS Spring 2017 13

Her bridemaids wore full-length rose-colored gowns, and the groomsmen wore suits with white shirts and suspenders. Wedding decorations were luxurious and appropriately tropical. “We relied on the resort’s wedding services, but we also brought some personal things from home. We met a few days earlier with the planner to hammer out the final details,” Nicole says. She brought the bridal bouquet from home – a clutch of faux peonies and roses, and a decorative “Mr. & Mrs.” Sign, for example. It was raining the day of the wedding, but it soon stopped and the

ceremony moved forward outdoors. The wedding reception took place at the golf course clubhouse. They cut into a two-tiered cake – one layer coconut, and the other vanilla. The couple was at the resort for 10 days, while guests stayed anywhere from four to seven days. “Everything turned out really good. We were very impressed by everthing the resort did to make our wedding beautiful,” Nicole says. Her advice to other couples planning a destination wedding? “Do your research, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to bring your own things to fill out what you would like at the ceremony or reception. That’s part of what will make it a special day.”

Show off your shoulders with sexy straps in one of spring 2017’s designer wedding gowns. After endless seasons of strapless gowns — which we will love, of course —shoulders are getting some attention. Special details include lacy and wide straps, some that flutter or drip off the shoulders and others are barely there. Some designers let the gown’s shoulders dip into lacy short sleeves or shoulderhugging ruffles. It’s all very bridal and looks fresh and lovely.

yan Puhrmann pulled a few strings to get his sweetheart, Magness Forsyth, into the University of Northern Iowa’s campanile. It was on Magness’ bucket list to be up with the bells at the top of the campanile, and it was there that Ryan proposed. When the couple exchanged wedding vows in an outdoor ceremony on the UNI campus July 30, the campanile was in the background. “It was a beautiful day, and everything worked out perfectly. I got to marry Ryan at the end of the day, so even if everything had gone wrong, it still would have been worth it,” says Magness, a UNI graduate who teaches at West Branch. Ryan, also a UNI graduate, is associate director of admissions at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids. The couple met when Magness was working at the Stuffed Olive in Cedar Falls. They dated three years before Ryan popped the question. Ryan also wrote their vows. “He included the first time he heard my name Magness. He thought it sounded so cool, like someone you’d

want to go on an adventure with. Adventure has been a big thing for us because of that, and in the vows, he talked about life’s adventures,” Magness explains. She wore a princess ballgown from Allure, which she found at Simply I Do in Cedar Falls. “I loved how poufy it was, and it didn’t have as much bling as I thought I would have. I put it on and looked in the mirror and said, ‘This is the one.’” Purple and silver were chosen as their wedding colors. Magness carried a bouquet that was predominately purple with white – “dark purple carnations, my favorite part,” and

her bridesmaids, dressed in plum long dresses, carried bouquets in mostly white with purple accents. Groomsmen wore plum vests with gray suits. “The primary tie clip I wore that day has the latitude and longitude of the Campanile printed on it, since that is where we got engaged,” says Ryan. “Magness also gave me a wood tie clip with our wedding date on it that morning.” A friend, Tom Reburn, officiated at the ceremony, and music was provided by a guitarist and soloist. The bride walked down the aisle to Train’s “Marry Me,” while attendants were accompanied by Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years.” Rather than a sand unity ceremony, the couple mixed together purple and silver glass pieces. “You send the glass back to the company, and they make it into a sculpture for you. It was very cool, a random find on the Internet. We also had ornaments made for our parents from the glass,” she explains. Ryan admits he “lost it” when Magness began her walk down the aisle toward him – “full, uncontrollable tears of happiness. I was that groom, and she loved it, although we did get even when she cried during the vows. Happy things typically don’t get her going,” he says. Their perfect July day began a little cloudy, then cleared off to a typical sunny, hot afternoon. But just as the ceremony was set to begin, “that perfect cloud” moved across the sun and

The couple also served a dessert bar and had a small champagne cake with raspberry filling to cut from Jules Bakery in Marion. “UNI’s food is terrific, and the recipe is in their cookbook, so we’ve made the chicken Milano once a month since the wedding,” Magness says. Tables were decorated with glass cylinders with purple hydrangeas and plenty of lighted candles in silver and white candleholders, something Magness always imagined for her wedding. For their first dance, Ryan and Magness chose “Penguin” by Christina Perri, while the father-daughter dance was to Brooks & Dunn’s “Neon Moon.”

“My father and I danced all the time when I was growing up, and I specifically remember that song. I told him we could either do a traditional father-daughter dance, or we could dance to ‘Neon Moon.’ Since it’s about a broken heart, we had to explain everything to our guests,” she recalls, with a laugh. After the wedding, the couple divided their honeymoon between Seattle, Wash., and Portland, Ore.
