homemade wedding cake topper adds personal touch “There’s nothing you can’t craft for your wedding,” says Darcy Miller, editorial director of “Martha Stewart Weddings” magazine. For starters, craft your own cake topper, and end up with a keepsake. A recent “Martha Stewart Weddings” favorite, for example, was clustering colorful, craft-store butterflies along one side of a fondant cake. Or top the cake with a tea cup, either from grandmother’s inherited china or from your own registered china. Artists can be commissioned to create a topper that reflects the couple’s interests.

any brides would appreciate the opportunity to work with an event planner. For Jessica Kelly, it meant using her own expertise and experience as an event planner and outreach coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association to plan her own wedding and reception. Jessica and Kurt Simon tied the knot June 25, 2011, at West Liberty First Church United. She knows the importance of paying attention to detail. “I had a lot of fun with wedding plans. I wanted it to be simple and fun and I wanted details that people would remember. It was pretty personal for both of us. We did some craft projects like making centerpieces and ribbon pomanders. I’m a big fan of polka dots — they’re fun and flirty — and they can look classy instead of corny and childish, if done right. We made little buttons with sayings as favors and everyone was wearing them at the reception,” she said. Kurt was her first boyfriend in the sixth-grade, and they crossed paths again at college. Jessica (“Jessi” to her friends) attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, and Kurt was

a student at Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls. He proposed before a Jason Aldean concert. She found her dress at Bride’s Corner in Waterloo, a one-shoulder mermaid-style dress by Allure. “It sparkled, and I loved the one-shoulder and shape of it. It was a little bit different and a style that you don’t see too often.” Her bridesmaids wore black knee-length, halter-top dresses and carried white hydrangeas with teal wire accents. Groomsmen wore teal vests and black ties. Jessica played with her favorite polka dots, dressing her flower girls in black-and-white polka dot dresses. “They’re the only ones who could pull it off,” she said, laughing. The couple worked closely with their pastor on the vows. “We chose something different than traditional vows, It’s the same church my parents were married in, and that was wonderful. We chose all of the verses and had a vocalist sing a special song, ‘To Make You Feel My Love.’ It was perfect for what we were feeling that day.” Kurt agreed. “Looking into Jessi’s eyes and Winter 2011 WEDDINGS

saying the vows was surreal. I was staring at the person I loved and staying in the moment. It was really special.” He is a concrete finisher at Martinson Construction. Friends and family spent the day before the wedding decorating for the reception at the West Liberty Community Center. Jessica’s mom made a polka dot garland for the head table, and instead of a guest book, the couple made a wish board with note cards that guests could write messages on and pin on the board.

“I made a scrapbook of all the note cards for a keepsake,” Jessica explained. The buffet supper included walnut-encrusted chicken and fruit salad. When the time came, the couple cut into a multi-layered, buttercream-iced cake adorned with polka dots. “As an event planner, I knew if we over-prepared a little bit that we could go with the flow. It rained all day on us, and it was still perfect. It went by so fast. I tried to take it all in, to experience all the emotions and it felt good to finally be married,” Jessica said. •

lanning and executing a wedding in just five short weeks takes organization, laserlike focus and a little derring-do. But it can be done. Justin Smith of Sumner returned home Nov. 19, 2010, from advanced U.S. Army training with news for his girlfriend, Alicia Kulhmann. He was deploying to Afghanistan in five weeks. Then he popped the question. The wedding date was set for Jan. 1, 2011. With no time to lose, the couple jumped into wedding plans. Alicia, who works at a Denver pharmacy, almost immediately found her dream dress at An Elegant Affair by Amy in Cedar Falls. “It has a train, and it’s antique ivory with a goldish tint and rosettes all over it, some lace and strapless. It’s really a timeless dress,” she said. She also chose her color theme — red, black and silver. Seven bridesmaids wore long, strapless red dresses with silver beaded belts at their waists. The groomsmen wore black tuxedos WEDDINGS Winter 2011

(Justin in a red vest and tie and his attendants in silver vests and ties) from Milroys. Finding the bridesmaids’ dresses turned out to be a headache. Bridal shops couldn’t guarantee that dresses, if ordered, would arrive in time for the New Year’s Day wedding. Alicia ended up ordering dresses from an online source. “They only had two sizes so the dresses had to be altered for each girl, but they did arrive in plenty of time,” she recalls. There was no time to order formal invitations or print programs, so the couple made their own. The wedding cake was another obstacle. “I started calling places and no one had openings for New Year’s Day or they were closed. I found a girl I’d graduated with who was making cakes on the side and she made me an absolutely gorgeous wedding cake — three-tiered with red frosting and black piping with our monograms in silver and crystal as the topper.” The bride carried a bouquet of white lilies www.wcfcourier.com/bridal

and red roses down the aisle. Bridesmaids carried white lilies and groomsmen wore red rose boutonnieres. For the sit-down dinner and reception, the couple rented the American Legion Hall in Sumner. With family and friends, the hall was transformed into a memorable setting. A large chandelier was installed and dangled above a round table showing off the wedding cake. Walls were draped with fabric and pillars strung with lights. Tables were decorated with crisp linens, red and black tablerunners, candles and other accessories. Alicia’s aunt had made homemade caramels, wrapped in red and silver foil, as wedding favors. The meal included brisket and ham and side

dishes. Alicia admits her mother took care of many details. “I couldn’t have done it without her. It was a whirlwind and so amazing to see our families come together and be supportive of what we were doing. I was so happy, I wasn’t nervous at all. I was ready to get married, and it turned out to be a beautiful wedding. Nothing went wrong. I wish I could live that day over again and enjoy it because it was such a blur.” In the meantime, Alicia is anxious for Justin’s return in mid-February. They exchange emails, post messages on Facebook pages and talk faceto-face via Skype. “And I like to send him care packages — a little taste of home.” •

unkerton native Kayla Steffen knew she had a good man in Mason Heavin. In just nine months of dating, together the couple endured the death of grandparents, a pickup truck rollover and a destructive apartment fire. During the apartment fire emergency, Kayla recalls her then-boyfriend put her safety first. With flames lapping under a door elsewhere in the apartment, Mason opened a window, kicked out the screen and prepared to launch Kayla out the window head first. Mason then decided to adjust his evacuation strategy. “He kind of just turned me around and kind of tossed me out lightly,” Kayla said, laughing. Throughout these and other trials, Kayla, 26, got to observe Mason’s character in situations where it mattered most. She liked what she saw.

16

www.wcfcourier.com/bridal

“He is a very kind-hearted person, one of the most kind-hearted people I’ve ever met,” Kayla added. “Just experiencing those made me realize he was a keeper.” Mason, 22, surprised Kayla with an engagement ring last July while picking her up at the airport. The couple wed this summer in Rolla, Mo. Almost 200 family and friends witnessed the ceremony. A student teaching job first brought Kayla, a 2007 graduate from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, to Missouri. After living three years in the state, Kayla decided to hold the wedding at her husband’s stomping grounds, her new home. “And my side of the family loves to travel so it just made sense to have it down here,” Kayla added. Kayla chose sky blue and black for her wedding colors, accented by pink and yellow flowers. “We had some roses and … ,” Kayla’s

voice trailed off as she struggled to list off the other dominant wedding blossom. Mason supplied the answer without hesitation: Peonies. “Well, he’s kinda a flower guy,” Kayla added. Kayla wore a white, strapless wedding dress with beaded accents on the bodice. Their post-wedding party took place at the Rolla Lions Club reception hall. A Hy-Vee store at the Lake of the Ozarks made the wedding cake. College friends provided music and entertainment. Kayla decorated tables at the reception hall with square mirrors, three different size vases and floating candles. To honor loved ones who had died, Kayla asked her florist to decorate a Willow Tree angel with silk rosebuds. The memento was placed in front of the church and holds a place of honor in the couple’s living room. As she reflected on her wedding day, Kayla said the little emotional moments stand out the most. She recalled a touching moment sitting in a stairwell with her bridesmaids, soaking in the significance of the day. •

Wedding becomes simple, elegant celebration

K

athryn “KayDee” Hockey and Kyle Anglum wanted their wedding to be a celebration. They also wanted an intimate, simple and elegant affair. The couple wed June 25 at the Waterloo Center for the Arts, attended by 150 guests. “We wanted to celebrate becoming a real family and have our families and friends come together. That was very important to us,” said KayDee. “We were on the river and planned to get married on the patio. It rained earlier in the day, so we moved everything inside. The room was a really nice, big open space and they’d decorated with tulle and twinkle lights. The waterfall in front is a beautiful place to do pictures.” A student at the University of Northern Iowa, KayDee works part time at Park Place Event Centre and Charlies’ Angels Photography. Her husband works for CBE Group. Wedding colors were dark red, black and champagne, reflected in wedding invitations created by a co-worker and featuring pull-out sleeves to hold RSVP cards, printed directions and registry information. KayDee found her wedding gown, an ivory, strapless mermaid dress with beading and ruching. For comfort, she added shoulder straps to the dress. Six bridesmaids wore knee-length champagne dresses with a floral-patterned black overlay. Groomsmen were attired in black tuxedos from Milroys with ivory shirts and red vests. The groom wore a black vest. Other attendants included a junior bride and groom, two flower girls, a ring bearer and two ushers. The couple’s 11-month-old daughter slept through the ceremony, the bride said. www.wcfcourier.com/bridal

19

She describes the wedding flowers as “simply beautiful.” Her bouquet and other flower arrangements were created by Crossroads Hy-Vee florists, and were built around ivory and red roses, lilies and hydrangeas. The reception and dance took place at the same location. Rose petals were scattered across long tables covered in black linen tablecloths and appointed with hurricane glass lanterns and votive candles. Hy-Vee catered the meal, including Parmesan chicken and roast beef. The two-tier wedding cake was white with buttercream frosting and decorated with roses. As favors, Anglum’s mother, Dorothy, made Oreo balls that were wrapped in red tulle and tied with black ribbon, and the bride’s aunt made mints. Ultimate Entertainment provided the music. “We’ve gotten so many compliments from people that it was the most fun they’d had at a wedding, which we thought was great. I’m glad people could have a good time,” she said. “For us, the wedding meant finally becoming a family. We dated for four years and were engaged for almost two months when we found out we were having a daughter. This means so much to us.” •
