notes dinnerware that
dazzles Intimate
Moments Made Extraordinary
Choosing dinnerware patterns sounds a little, well, oldfashioned, but it’s a time-honored tradition for brides-tobe. You’ve got to eat, right? So you might as well elevate dinner — whether it’s pizza or chicken cordon bleu — with dinnerware that’s pretty and elegant. And that, like some china patterns, never goes out of style. Consider this:
1
Bone china and porcelain may look delicate, but they make for durable dinnerware. Earthenware and stoneware add color and pattern to your table settings.
2
Be sure your dinnerware is dishwasher safe. Some patterns with metal banding may need to be washed and dried by hand.
3
Prepare for the future. When you register for your china or dinnerware pattern, consider the number of place settings you’ll need to get started.

notes Brides need to take control of their
financial futures
Lynette Fitzgerald, Registered Representative, LUTCF Financial Decisions Group 319-233-8476 lfitzgerald@fdg.net Women's roles have changed drastically over the last 100, even 50, years. Now, more and more women are actively engaged in understanding and participating in financial decisions. However, there are still too many women who are left out of financial decision making, some by their own choice. The challenges and opportunities for women are different from those that men experience. Women have unique priorities. On the average women earn less than men, typically they receive a lower monthly benefit from Social Security, and they have higher healthcare costs throughout their lives. The good news is that life expectancy for women, as measured by the Centers for Disease Control, is now 81.1 years. The Social Security Administration estimates that an average 65-year-old woman today will live to age 86. Women spend fewer years in the workforce, often because women are the primary caretakers for young children or elderly parents. Women may confront the "what-if" factor: What if something changes? A woman's retirement strategy may be influenced by her
spouse's income, pension and general health. Most women will be widowed or divorced at some point in their life; it's more than likely they will be solely responsible for their finances. Are you prepared for a 20-, 30- or 40-year retirement? How do you begin? How do you draw retirement income off what you've saved, and how could you create other possible income streams? How do you try and protect your retirement savings and other financial assets? Talking with a financial professional, a female financial professional, may give you some good ideas. You want a representative who walks your walk, who understands the particular challenges that many women face in saving for retirement.
Here are some steps to consider:
1 Develop a strategy that fits your risk tolerance. Many people retire with a random collection of assets and no real strategy. Some are big on "chasing the return," assuming risk they really shouldn’t in pursuit of a big return. Others are very risk-averse, so fearful of what the market might do that they stay out of the market entirely, and in the current low interest rate environment, that represents an easy way to fall behind and lose purchasing power to inflation. 2 You need a middle ground. When you are in your 50s, for example, you have less time to make back any big losses than you once did. So protecting what you have is a priority. At the same time, the possibility of a 20-, 30- or 40-year retirement means you have to have some kind of growth strategy. Your initial retirement money has to keep growing. continued on page 28 WEDDINGS Spring 2016 | 15

sk Sarah Pakula and John Rickelman to describe their wedding, and Sarah doesn’t hesitate: “A very intimate ceremony … that’s what John and I wanted. That part of the wedding was about us,” she says, smiling. The reception, though, was all about the guests. “Let’s dance the night away!” The couple wed June 20, 2015, in a ceremony at Lincoln Center Church in Grundy Center. John got the first look at his bride when she stepped into the sanctuary. “I felt beautiful, and we were so comfortable together. That was such a special moment,” the bride says. She’d found the dress of her dreams, a Romance Allure gown with a corset, at Simply I Do in Cedar Falls. “I wanted to feel elegant, and I loved this dress. It fit me perfectly,” she recalls. She removed appliques from the gown and added a belt, which better suited her style. She chose yellow and gray for her wedding colors. Bridesmaids wore yellow gowns with high-low hemlines. The bride gave her attendants their shoes, hair styles and makeup as gifts. Groomsmen wore yellow pocket handkerchiefs in place of boutonnieres with gray tuxedos, and the groom gave them each a bottle of Templeton Rye. Early on their wedding day, they were greeted by a thunderstorm. The couple relished the raw nature of the rain and lightning, but the morning quickly cleared off and left them with beautiful, clear weather for their vows. Floral arrangements featuring gerbera daisies, yellow roses, white stephanotis and ribbons, a yellow aisle runner and pew boxes provided decoration for the church. “The stained glass windows are so beautiful that we didn’t need much else. Everything was fresh and pretty, and I remember that it smelled really good,” she recalls. The vintage-inspired reception for nearly 200 guests took place at the Fox Ridge Golf Club in Dike. Sparkling strands of lights, old wooden Pepsi boxes, burlap, including a “Mr. and Mrs.” sign, and table decorations included blue Mason jars filled with dry beans, shelled corn, buttons, crayons and dominos set the tone. “I’ve always been into vintage and antique things. It feels warm and comforting to me. I grew up on a farm, and I wanted to capture that feeling. Going vintage was an easy decision,” Sarah says. Church ladies baked 100 pies — cherry, peach, raspberry, blackberry — that were arranged on wooden boxes that fit the country wedding style, and the buffet was catered by Randall’s. After dinner, the newlyweds danced to “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King, before opening the floor to their guests with music provided by Ultimate Entertainment. “It seemed like we spent 24 hours a day for 18 months planning the wedding, and that was a good amount of time to get everything booked. I kept on track with a timeline. I wrote done everything to keep myself sane and not overlook anything. My advice is to not be afraid to confirm and reconfirm all your plans. You just want it to be perfect,” Sarah explains.

full steam ahead More honeymooners are booking romantic cruises for their afterwedding getaways. Couples seeking relaxation enjoy the value and all-inclusiveness of cruising, multiple destinations, onboard activities and special packages available to newlyweds. River cruising in the U.S. is one of the top cruise trends.
American Queen Steamboat ships and American Cruise Line’s small-ship crusing along the inland waterways and rivers of the U.S. is more popular than ever. The American Queen is the largest steamboat ever built, a grand, gracious triumph of American ingenuity. Modern amenities on the only authentic overnight paddlewheel steamboat in America are wrapped in the opulence of the Victorian era. An acclaimed chef is on board, and there’s a Grand Saloon for entertainment. Cruises on the upper Mississippi River explore Mark Twain territory, while lower Mississippi River cruises visit such historic cities as New Orleans and Memphis. Ohio and Tennessee cruises are also available, and the American Empress cruises the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest in the footsteps of explorers Lewis and Clark. Beginning in 2017, Viking Cruises will operate two ships on the Mississippi River and its tributaries. These two new Viking ships a re the first of six Viking plans to roll out on the Mississippi over a three-year period — a monumental deployment by any standard.
Less is NOT more, more is more.
All-Inclusive is becoming the industry standard. Across the board, cruise lines are going more and more all-inclusive. Although this trend began with the Ultra-Luxury sector, due to
consumer demand more and more of the lines are following suit. It’s time to bid adieu to out-of-pocket expenses. An all-inclusive cruise allows you to sail in style and leave your wallet in your cabin.
Cruising has converts at three levels: Premium/contemporary, luxury and river cruising.
The Caribbean ranks top-of-the-list for popular regions for premium/contemporary cruises. Luxury and river cruises in Europe are also popular. Among the popular ports of call: Cozumel, Mexico, Gustavia, St. Bart’s and Vienna, Austria. The most popular cruise lines are Carnival Cruise Lines for premium/contemporary; Oceania Cruise for luxury; and Viking River Cruises. In second place is Royal Caribbean International, Cunard for luxury and American Cruise Lines for river. Source:

honeymoon guide continued from page 15
steps to planning your honeymoon For some newlyweds, their honeymoon may be the first trip they’ve ever planned themselves. It’s their first chance to prove how well they work together as a pair. Figure out your budget — time and money. Decide what kind of vacation you want to have. Be sure the bride’s trip is booked in her maiden name. Your name won’t legally be changed the minute you get married, so make sure all your traveling documents are in your maiden name. Think of safety. Yes, you have a big rock on your hand now, but make sure your hotel has a safe deposit box, and use it if you think you might lose it. Or consider keeping the ring at home. Use this time to find common interests as a couple.

3 Consider long-term care coverage. Women often have longer average life expectancies than men and can require months or years of eldercare. Medicare only pays for 100 days of nursing home care, and only if you get skilled care and enter a nursing home right after a hospital stay of three or more days. Long-term care coverage can provide a huge financial relief if and when the need for it arises. 4 Delay Social Security if possible. If your career and health permit, delaying Social Security is a wise move for single women. If you wait until full retirement age to claim your benefits, you could receive 30-40 percent larger Social Security payments as a result. For every year you wait to claim Social Security, your monthly payments get about 8 percent larger.
It’s a good idea to review your Social Security Statement; the statement has important Social Security information and, if applicable, estimates of your future benefits, which is helpful in planning your financial future. If you are working, I encourage you to check your statement yearly to make sure your earnings record is correct. You can view your statement online at www. socialsecurity.gov/signin. Whether you are a new graduate starting your first job or a widow taking control of your finances for the first time, now is the time to get them in order. Sit down with a financial professional to talk about your goals for the future. They can help you craft a strategy to bridge the gap between your dreams and reality.
