“If you love me, love me true, Send me a ribbon, a ribbon of blue.” The children’s rhyme reminds us of why blue is a favorite for weddings. We especially love deep, vibrant blues for their dramatic presence. 1 Set the blue tone with your choice of invitations. 2 Be bold with dotted blue bow ties for groomsmen. 3 Cobalt blue pairs nicely pinks and silver, as well as white, brown, yellow, lavender, peach and bronze. 4 Sassy v-neck lace bridesmaid dress, B163058-5B2 by Jasmine 5 Navy Blue Sparkly Crystal Satin Clutch Bag 6 Silver earrings with sapphires

It’s a striking – if not daring – combination with fuschia and ruby that works beautifully, whether the look you’re after is modern, romantic or classic. Other options with eggplant? Raspberry, coral, lavender, shades of brown and surprisingly, black! 1 A two-layer wedding cake with sugar paste flowers in eggplant purple. 2 Make your “something old” a vintage brooch. 3 Bows add an element of charm to bridesmaids' heels. 4 Adorn your up-do with hairpins from The Honeycomb. 5 Mori Lee strapless gown in plum 6 Essie’s “In the Lobby 935” richly colored nail polish.

There's nothing like a wedding to motivate you to get serious about your health and fitness goals. But crash diets or extreme exercise programs are never the answer. "It's usually best to start thinking about your specific goals three months before your wedding day to allow plenty of time to establish your routine and adjust to a healthier lifestyle," says Steve Bronston, certified personal trainer with Life Time, a company that operates more than 115 health and wellness centers nationwide. Bronston and Life Time offer a three-month countdown plan to get you ready for the big day: Weeks 1-4

We Have All Your Wedding Day Needs 3205 Hudson Road | Cedar Falls, IA (319) 277-1117 | simply-ido.com| simply@simply-ido.com 8 | wcfcourier.com/weddings

Focus on changing your unhealthy habits. Nutrition is key when trying to lose weight, decrease body fat and increase your overall health. Work with a professional to lay out a detailed nutrition plan that consists of carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats at each meal. Then, begin with a fitness program that incorporates weight training and cardio intervals. Arm exercises like overhead press, tricep push-ups and bicep curls, and back

exercises like rows and rear flys help brides looking to tone up for a strapless or lowback dress. Bronston suggests starting with two or three days of weight training, two or three days of cardio and one day of Pilates or yoga.

Weeks 5-8

Now it's time to switch up your exercise routines. It's a good idea to work with a personal trainer or join a group fitness class once or twice a week to shake up your routine and stay motivated. Your workouts should include one to two weight training exercises per body part throughout the week. If you can, try to shift the amount of weight you use and number of repetitions you do to help stimulate change within your body. Continue a cardio routine of two to three days per week and add in another day or Pilates or yoga.

Weeks 9-12

It is important to keep up with your developing healthy habits as the weeks progress, but as your wedding day approaches, you're sure to feel the stress of planning. "A new focus on rest and relaxation during this time period is key," Bronston says. You can eat well and exercise perfectly, but without sleep, stretching, rest and recovery, your body is at risk of not functioning properly.

notes money conversations

before & after your wedding

Lynette Fitzgerald Financial Decisions Group 319-233-8476 lfitzgerald@fdg.net

No money secrets should stand between the two of you as you wed. Talking about money isn't always pleasant, but candor, communication and full disclosure can lead to clarity in your financial lives.

Financial fidelity or infidelity. If you hide debt, income or assets from your spouse, it can lead to a fight and possibly even an impasse in your relationship. Transparency is key when it comes to money. That truth should be recognized by every couple tying the knot, or even just cohabitating. Yes, financial matters can prove hard to discuss — but if you can't talk about them together, that's already a serious problem. A conversation about financial matters may be a productive and easy conversation to have for some and yet awkward for others but also necessary for the health of the marriage. Talk to your future spouse about your debts. Do it before you get married, not after. That debt will become your spouse's financial concern as well as yours. The two of you should plan together to pay down your individual debts in the coming months or years. If you have six credit cards between the two of you, see if you can slim it down to three or four — the ones with the lowest fees and best rewards programs. Or see if you can just use those three or four and let the other accounts lie dormant. That might be a better move than just canceling the excess credit cards — that could hurt you, especially in the case of older accounts. As a percentage of your FICO score is based on the duration of your credit history, so if that was a good history, you don't quite want to say goodbye to it. Think about a new joint credit card account for the two of you. If you feel your spouse needs debt counseling before you can make that move, don't be shy about requesting it. Even if your spouse has been living on plastic, think twice about leaving him or her without a credit card. You want (and need) to show some credit history.

Compromise. The most valuable verb in marriage is also really valuable when it comes to your shared financial life. Maybe you're a good saver, a future "millionaire next door" — and yet your spouse is a comparative spendthrift. If you can't compromise on a "money policy," then maybe you can find a middle ground by saving for a special experience. Or, maybe each of you can set aside a bit of money per month to spend or save purely at your discretion. Paying bills — What works best for your marriage? If one of you earns 70 percent of the household bills and expenses. To many newlyweds, that seems entirely fair. Build retirement savings & an emergency fund together. Financially, there are few better ways to signify your long-term commitment to one another. Sleep on it. Consider waiting 24 hours before making a big purchase (if you can) before going through with it. Or, alternately, set a dollar limit on such purchases — give each other limited financial autonomy in making major purchases for a set amount. If the money exceeds that limit, then you both have to discuss it before it can occur. Make a budget. In fact, strive to make a zero-based version, a budget in which income minus expenses comes precisely to zero each month. This is a way of accounting for each and every dollar spent (actual or projected) and a way to pinpoint potential monthly savings or redirection of income toward expenses. Joint or single tax filing? If your incomes vary greatly it may be better to file separately. Consult a tax preparer for an answer. Also, look at your W-4 at work. It may be time to adjust your withholding status. If your spouse isn't employed, you get to add another withholding allowance. Assuming he or she is employed, you can turn to irs.gov to learn how many allowances you are due in total. Then, you can divide that total by two. You and your employer need to follow the instructions on the W-4 so you don't withhold more or less than you should.

Relax and let an expert

handle the details.

choosing your

attendants

Not sure how to choose? Pick the maids and gents who mean the most to you, and that you can count on for their support. Afraid of hurt feelings? Ask them to do a reading, hand out programs, oversee the guest book or gifts. Attendants are your support group, your weddingday front line. Parties can range from a single maid or matron of honor and best man to more than a dozen attendants. When you’re drafting your team, consider these tips:

1

More isn’t always merrier. The larger the number, the greater the potential for complications. A general rule of thumb is one groomsman and one bridesmaid for every 50 guests, which means pick a number that fits the size of the wedding.

2

Pick those closest to you. It might be worth including family to avoid conflict, but nothing is set in stone. You may want your siblings, closest friends, cousins, future sisters- and brothers-in-law.

3

Don’t make assumptions. Ask before you write off a friend because you think she or he can’t pay the freight for attire and the rest. Being an attendant is an honor, but a costly one. Let the person make the final call. Or if you can, offer to help foot the bill or find something else for the person to do (guest book or personal attendant, for example).

4 5 6

Opposite gender is OK, too, as “man of honor” and “best woman.” Set expectations from the get-go.

No, you don’t have to return the favor. Just because you’ve been in someone else’s bridal party, doesn’t mean they have to be in yours.

7 8 9 10

You can have two maids or matrons of honor, or a maid and a matron, and two best men. You can have an uneven number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. If children will be in the party as flower girls or ring bearers, they will need special consideration. Think before you uninvite — and be prepared to deal with hurt feelings and torn relationships.

Maid/matron of honor responsibilities The bride’s assistant before and during the wedding. Traditionally hosts the bridal shower and/or bachelorette party. Witness by law. Pays for her own attire. Makes sure bridesmaids are dressed properly with accessories for the wedding. Precedes the bride and her escort down the aisle. Arranges the bride’s veil and train and holds the bride’s bouquet during the ceremony. Passes the groom’s ring when requested by officiant. Sits next to the groom at the bridal table during the reception. Alerts the bride of the reception timetable at appropriate times. Best man responsibilities Helps groom with prewedding duties. Organizes the bachelor party. Witness by law. Acts as chief of staff at the wedding. Carries bride’s wedding ring until requested by officiant. Proposes the first toast to the bridal couple. Reminds the groom of the reception timetable. Makes sure the couple’s luggage is in the car for their departure. Makes sure all rental items are returned.

Alexis and John Roulette don't have to look far to remember the love that friends and relatives showered upon them on their wedding day. The 7-foot-long surfboard mounted above their living room couch says it all. In silver Sharpie, guests wrote messages of love, congratulations and advice on the board that the couple used as a guest book at their wedding in Huntington Beach, Cali, last summer. As weddings have become highly personalized, the guest book, too, has come a long way. What was once a traditional white bound book has become elaborate and creative, often taking the shape of something that reflects the couple's personalities or wedding theme. "What it's morphed into is more of a way of delivering messages and notes and keepsakes for the bride and groom, while at the same time it's become more interactive and creative in its display," says Darcy Miller, editor at large of Martha Stewart Weddings.

Guests might sign a giant wine bottle, a piece of sporting equipment, seashells or stones, maps, artwork, or fabric squares that get stitched together to form a quilt. Miller has seen a vintage typewriter displayed for guests to peck out messages, a dictionary in which guests circled words relevant to the couple, and a globe on which guests signed near places they felt the couple should visit. Guests might snap an instant photo and leave it behind with a message, to be compiled in a scrapbook. Or a couple might offer a published book for guests to sign, Miller says, such as a book on birds for a natureinspired event. Because guest books are so individualized, they often become part of the couple's home. "It becomes personalized decor you live with," Miller says. "These are no longer things getting stuck in a box and never looked at ever again." • Source: Associated Press

fashion forward From fairytale princess gowns

to feathery mini-dresses, bold skinny trouser looks and showgirl sequins, Bridal Fashion Week had something for brides of every size, shape and style inclination. White reigned, as did classic silhouettes to please the most traditional bride. For everybody else, there were splashes of color, plenty of fluttery floral applique and sparkle, sparkle, sparkle.

Oscar de la Renta At left, designer Peter Copping is making his mark at the storied Oscar de la Renta label. In his bridal collection, Copping included some looser shapes — not everything was cinched tightly at the waist, princess-style — and even some short bridal gowns. The gowns feature a variety of necklines, layering and impeccable details.

Reem Acra At top, Reem Acra includes some dramatically layered silhouettes.

Ines de Santo Ines de Santo gowns, opposite page, included fit-and-flare looks along with sheaths, A-line silhouettes, halter necks and princess ball gowns. Her backs and necklines were often illusion style, offering a barely-there appearance. She included open bolero jackets, along with detachable skirt options for those who want to change up the outfit for the reception.

Reem Acra From Reem Acra, this page, there is an abundance of drama — ultra-long trains, encrusted sheer overlays and sleeve options. Many of her dress tops were molded at the chest, bustier style; some silhouettes fitted tightly across the rear with trains, and some trains can be detached and used as veils.

Brides rocking midriff-baring or jumpsuits It’s a trend that’s been building for years: the anything-goes bride who chooses to bare a little midriff in two pieces or rock her wedding in a jumpsuit or menswear-inspired tuxedo look done in bridal white, ivory, Champagne or equally soft wedding tones. "It's definitely something in the air," said Jane Keltner de Valle, Glamour's fashion news director. "In general, when you're getting married, you're typically in the best shape of your life. You're working out like crazy. A lot of brides feel like they want to show off those hard-earned abs." There's no danger that two-piece looks will topple more traditional gowns in popularity any time soon. According to a 2015 survey of brides who used the wedding resource site TheKnot. com, fit-and-flare dresses, also known as mermaid or trumpet styles, were most popular, with 40 percent, while just 1 percent said they picked two-piece outfits. When it comes to baring midriff, bridal trendsetter Vera Wang is on board for brides

who know they'll feel good wearing them. "I think anyone can wear it if she feels confident, but I do say that it's very important to have it cut properly," she said in a February interview during New York Fashion Week. The same goes for jumpsuits, the flipside of showing off the abs but also a trendy alternative to traditional bridal dressing. With brides celebrating in more than one outfit — one for the ceremony, one for the reception, for example — those who might feel uneasy about trousers, jumpsuits or bare midriffs walking down the aisle have plenty of other opportunities to wear those looks. "The two-piece trend is definitely something that is catching on, and it doesn't have to be scandalous," said Shelley Brown, associate fashion and beauty editor at The Knot. "Brides more and more want to feel that their weddings are personalized and reflect their style." More bridal designers are offering two-piece options, along with jumpsuits, she

said. Keltner de Valle urged brides to be sure before committing to either style. "If you aren't confident about your stomach, you're going to be shifting around or self-conscious about it all night. Another important thing to keep in mind is setting. If you're getting married in a traditional church ceremony, perhaps wearing a crop top might not be the most appropriate thing," she said. Showing just a sliver of skin instead of a lot is a safe choice, Keltner de Valle said. "Another thing to keep in mind is that you're going to be photographed all night from every angle, so you want to make sure that it's flattering in different situations — when you sit down, when you're dancing, when you're leaning over to cut the cake."

SMALL DETAILS MATTER

Carry your theme through all aspects of the wedding, in particular the reception. The ceremony may leave guests feeling flushed and a little teary-eyed (happy tears, of course), but they’ll be more likely to remember party details than the wedding gown. When creating the perfect setting for your reception, don’t overlook small details but don’t go overboard, either. A few special touches at each table can personalize and set the tone. Whether you choose lanterns, tabletop topiaries, rustic elements or whatever reflects your style — be sure to carry it through from start to finish.

There's a fresh twist to naked wedding cakes. When the trend began, the cakes were basically un-iced cake stacks with thick frosting between the layers. The “new naked” accessorizes with fresh flowers, fruit, and yes, even frosting!

UNUSUAL DESIGNS

Some couples just want to be different. Your choice of wedding cake design can help tell your love story, so it’s important to work with your baker to get just the style you’re going for! Silhouettes, chalkboard designs, ombré icing, and rosettes are stunning details. WEDDINGS Summer 2016 | 23

Infuse nfuse your wedding with rich eggplant, a surprisingly versatile color for fall and winter weddings.

Popular choices for groomsmen are money clips, key chains or ball caps. ❑ Schedule final fittings for bride and bridesmaids. ❑ Schedule appointments at beauty salons for attendants, if needed. ❑ Hold the bridesmaids’ luncheon. ❑ Purchase a guest book and decide where it will go, either at the wedding or reception.

Two Weeks

choosing your

A wedding pants suit from Christian Siriano.
