Innovation: to do something new and different. It’s a core value at Western Home Communities, and the new Jorgensen Plaza for Well-Being in Cedar Falls fits the bill. “This sure doesn’t seem like a retirement community!” marveled one Western Home Communities resident after touring the amenities inside. Two open-to-the-public restaurants and pub, an events center with seating for up to 400, an Aveda concept salon, a market offering gifts and grab-and-go deli items, swimming pool, wellness center and therapy gym make Jorgensen Plaza a multi-purpose destination. “Now comes the exciting part: seeing how people of all ages come together in this space,”

said CEO Kris Hansen. Hansen envisions grandparents swimming with grandchildren, extended families enjoying Hansen fireworks outside, concerts and community theatre perfor-

to residents via walking trails and sidewalks, or the shuttle bus that makes daily runs to and from the plaza. Residents of Prairie Wind, a new independent living community attached at the south end of Jorgensen Plaza, simply walk through a secured door to dine, exercise, swim, get a massage or haircut, attend events and socialize. Residents of The Suites, designed for short-term stays after a hospitalization, will have the same type of access through a door at the north end. Their visitors will especially appreciate easy access to dining and more. The therapy gym includes a mini-kitchen and bathroom with a narrower door like those in most people’s homes, so residents can work on regaining skills for daily living. Advanced technologies will be a benefit to residents of The Suites. “We’re able to provide stateof-the-art therapies you can’t get anywhere else in the Cedar Valley,” explained Stacy Gibbs, director of therapy. “This will help people get home sooner and safer, to enjoy life independently as much as possible.” It took many supporters to bring the vision to life for Western Home Communities, a notfor-profit organization since it was founded in 1912. Residents Jim and Phyllis Jorgensen provided a lead gift and matching challenge to encourage other donors. A gift of land worth $1 million was made in memory of Jim’s parents, second-generation Americans who raised five children. “As the Lord has blessed us, we need to do something for others,” Jim reflected when announcing the gift. “We hope and pray everything offered in this place will be a real blessing to Western Home Communities.” Other donors responded to the Jorgensen challenge, and more than $4.5 million was raised through an ongoing campaign. “The spirit of philanthropy has built this organization since an initial gift in 1911,” said Chief Operating Officer Jerry Harris. “We’re extremely grateful to all who made this vision a reality.”

Not long after work finished at Diamond Event Center, the sweet strains of strings filled the air as a morning performance by Northern Iowa Youth Orchestra delighted the audience. The concert provided beautiful background music for vendors setting up in the other 2/3rds of the venue for the Courier’s Thrive! event. In less than two months, Diamond Event Center has hosted such occasions as Good Morning Cedar Valley, the Mayors’ Volunteer Awards luncheon, the Mayor’s Top Teen Awards reception and Leader Valley training, along with employee updates and resident meetings. Wedding receptions begin in June and several are booked throughout 2018, along with the Eight over 80 awards luncheon, class reunions, anniversary parties, fundraisers and even Christmas parties. “The versatility of Diamond Event Center is pretty amazing,”

says event coordinator Amy Dall, who mentions great acoustics and top-quality audio/visual equipment as definite pluses for event planners. The venue can be split into thirds, each with its own screen, projector and presentation lighting. A mounted camera can broadcast what’s happening on stage to five screens throughout the space. Round tables or rectangular training tables can be used, or chairs — with and without arms — can be arranged theater-style. It’s ideal for edu-

cational trainings during the day and business events at night. Its social uses don’t stop there. Villa residents of Western Home Communities meet weekly for coffee. A summer-long grand opening celebration concludes in September with football on the big screens and children’s activities. “It’s been a fun challenge to see how this space can work for every type of event,” says Dall, who brings nine years of catering experience to her position. “It offers so many possibilities.”

Joan Diamond liked to say she and her husband, Saul, were planners. That’s why they embraced the COURTESY move to one of the first PHOTOS villas built at Western Home Communities in the early 2000’s. They also planned many philanthropic gifts over the years, typically with little fanfare allowed. Joan finally agreed, late in her life, that it would be acceptable to recognize their generosity toward Western Home Communities by naming the event center in their honor. Diamond Event Center is now fondly referred to as the “gem” of Jorgensen Plaza.

‌The Suites at Western Home Communities, attached to Jorgensen Plaza on its north side, offer a unique environment you won’t find anywhere else in the Cedar Valley — or Iowa, for that matter. It’s been specially designed for people who need therapy and nursing care as they recuperate after surgery, illness or injury. “We thoughtfully and carefully planned this so patients will heal quickly and get back home, which is always their goal,” explains Wendy Ager, RN, BSN, senior director of skilled nursing. “Every detail will allow them to do that, from the private rooms to the dining options.” With only 20 people recuperating together per floor, the atmosphere offers a serene setting for healing. Each person will enjoy a spacious, private room with attached private bathroom and walk-in shower. All food is prepared in the open kitchen, similar to what you’d find at home, and food requests can be met 24/7 by the care team. “Patients here get to make choices about their daily life, and after being in the hospital that’s important to help them gain independence,” Ager says. If the patient wants to entertain visitors, they can enjoy the comfortable living spaces and outdoor access at The Suites. They’ll also have easy access to all amenities at Jorgensen Plaza, including the restaurants, Salon Iris and The Market for grab-and-go deli items. “Everything is easy to navigate, accessible and secure,” Ager says.

‌Getting you home sooner, safer and with a higher quality of life: That’s the goal of the Western Home Communities therapy team, working out of a new therapy gym inside Jorgensen Plaza, just a few steps from The Suites. “We offer technology you won’t find in other therapy settings in the Cedar Valley,” says Stacy Gibbs, director of therapy. “We’re going to use this technology and the new aquatic space to help people rehabilitate with less pain and better outcomes.” New technology includes a NASA anti-gravity treadmill, which lets patients become virtually weightless to step on the treadmill without hurting their joints. VirtuBalance lets therapists pinpoint exact problems and apply specific solutions for faster improvement. And

Creating inviting, user-friendly and versatile wellness spaces remained top priorities as the Wellness Center in Jorgensen Plaza moved through several design models. “Our final design is remarkable for how well it simultaneously meets the needs of our residents, therapy clients and employees,” said Amanda Lynch, lead wellness coordinator. Organized classes, independent conditioning, prescribed physical therapy and recreational uses are taking place concurrently in a four-lane lap pool, wellness center and adjoining therapy studio. This is not a typical gym environment, Lynch said. “We have a space where all wellness center members can reach their fullest potential in healthy living.” Residents using the wellness center equipment like the feature that saves personalized settings after each exercise session, eliminating the need to adjust seat positions, weights, number of repetitions and speed on each visit. With our personalized program design we have found that our members are coming more frequently and staying motivated because of their progress toward goals.” Classes, spaces and equipment meet needs for strength conditioning, flexibility, balance and cardio endurance. Residents share their wellness goals with

the wellness center staff and a personalized program is designed for improvement in the residents’ priority areas. The pool has given residents important new options to maintain and improve fitness, said Lynch. The pool includes four 25yard lap lanes, zero-depth entry to 4.5 feet depth, and a circular walking pool for walking with resistance. The water is maintained at 85 F. “It is a big plus to have a shuttle service that serves the entire community. The routes run in the morning and afternoon and the service is free,” Lynch added.

Brighten your day LINDA BOWMAN

Chief Communications Officer Western Home Communities ‌

‌Ever since Beth Zars heard David Wagner speak about his philosophy of being a day maker — someone who brightens the lives of others with intentional acts of good will — that’s been her mission, both personally and professionally. So when she saw Wagner’s book on the desk of Western Home Communities CEO Kris Hansen, it felt like a sign. Hansen had asked the Best of the Best award-winning hairstylist and her husband, Greg, about opening an Aveda salon inside Jorgensen Plaza. The internationally-recognized brand hasn’t ever located in a

community for older adults. “It’s pretty cool to be part of something so innovative that there’s no template for it,” says Beth. “We get to build it for others to follow. Who wouldn’t want to be part of that?” Beth appreciated the intergenerational vision Hansen presented; so did her husband, Greg, who works for Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging. Beth couldn’t stop thinking about the possibilities and they decided to dive in, even though she and two colleagues had recently opened Trio Salon Spa in Waterloo, where she remains a partner. “Everyone deserves to feel beautiful inside and out,” Beth says. “I’m excited to serve all ages here, from children to peo-

ple with decades of life experience and wisdom to share.” Services at Salon Iris include haircuts, styling, conditioning treatments, extensions, coloring, highlighting and Brazilian blowouts, plus manicures and dry pedicures. Spa services include massage, reflexology, Salon Iris. Aveda signature facials, hydrodermabrasion and waxing/sugaring. A unique offering is oncology/lymph massage for cancer patients. Other specialty treatments including cupping and hot stone, trigger point and sports massage. Appointments may be made by calling (319) 859-9341. For more information, visit the website iriscf.com.

‌We never lose our desire to have purpose and meaning in our lives. That is the foundation of Fresh Wind Ministries at Western Home Communities. Fresh Wind Worship is based in the Diamond Event Center off Prairie Parkway on Caraway Lane. A worship team of six full and part-time chaplains take the ministry to individuals and groups on two Western Home Communities campuses. Moving Sunday morning worship to the Diamond Event Center fulfills the need for more space and makes it possible to welcome the public to weekly services. Programming at Western Home Communities fulfills this mission: Participants in Fresh Wind Worship experience the presence of God and are encouraged by His presence. Continued on page 11  »

o provide more dining options for residents, Western Home Communities knew it would include restaurants inside Jorgensen Plaza. It only made sense to invite the public, since the goal of the space is to encourage intergenerational community.

Caraway Café

Caraway Café could easily become your new favorite breakfast or lunch spot, with its varied menu: Paninis (half or whole), sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups, breakfast sandwiches, pastries and desserts. The inhouse baker creates daily treats — Linda Bowman, Chief Communications ranging from decadent chocolate Officer, Western Home Communities cakes to cream puffs. All breads

are homemade. The homemade chips are a hit, as is the homemade hummus; each entrée includes a serving of both, and they can be purchased separately as well. Chef Corey Nolta leads the culinary team under the direction of Executive Chef Jim Nadeau. Hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Table 1912 Table 1912 is a premier fine dining destination for true culinary experiences. That’s a bold promise. The Table 1912 culinary staff brings specialties to the table that prepare them to deliver just that. The exquisite menu will change with the seasons as the chef and staff source ingredients locally. “We’re enthusiastic advocates for farm-to-fork dining,” said Crystal Ford, director of hospitality for Jorgensen Plaza. Table 1912 opens to the public June 4 with a menu featuring lamb, duck, pork, beef, seafood and pasta entrees. Appetizers include a signature Table 1912 Trifecta Skewer of chicken thigh, smoked pork loin and powder of duck confit. Chef Brice Dix leads the culinary team. The restaurant’s name connects to the year 1912 when Western Home communities opened its doors in Cedar Falls; food was grown and raised on the premises and served daily at the dining tables. Table 1912 fills with natural light during the day. There is seating for 65 at tables and booths. The double sided fireplace is shared with Gilm-

ore’s Pub. Table 1912 will be open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for lunch; and Thursday, Friday and Saturday for lunch and dinner. The culinary team will roll out a Sunday brunch this fall. Table 1912 is open to the public and available for private parties. The restaurant is located within Jorgensen Plaza on Caraway Lane at the Western Home Communities south campus.

“This is not a high entertainmenttype of worship. Instead, participants in Fresh Wind worship have a highreflective and worshipful experience.” Tim Boettger, director of spiritual care

BRANDON POLLOCK, THE COURIER »  Continued from page 9

“There is much to be gained from intergenerational engagement in our society — and that should be happening at our worship services,” said Tim Boettger, director of spiritual care. “When we illuminate the needs for assistance at our services, volunteers are so willing to help.” Sharing messages that are useful to different generations can be challenging. “Sometimes the young people are inspiring our residents and sometimes the residents are inspiring the young people. It is a beautiful thing to witness,” he said. “This is not a high entertainment-type of worship. Instead, participants in Fresh Wind worship have a high-reflective and worshipful experience. There is more prayer and more conversation between the worship leader and the congregation. It has a relational feel. We’re very casual and reverent.” Music ministry coordinator Patrick Jones sees the growth of Fresh Wind ministry as similar to a church that starts in a house and needs to seek larger and larger space for meeting. “The growth has been natural and steady. Western Home Communities residents began inviting guests and more residents became regular participants in the Sunday worship.” The variety of backgrounds in the congregation enriches dialogue and expands understanding. “Fresh Wind Worship seeks to encourage people in their faith journey. It is not a church to join. It is an open ministry of Western Home Communities,” said Boettger.
