We Got

Spirit

Pep Rallies The bell rings and students run to the gym to cover the front row. Chaos is everywhere. When we get into the gym, everything is crazy; screaming and chanting. The seniors yell S-S-SEN-I-I-IOR-SEN-IOR-SENIORSSENIORS-SENIORS. This is the day we’ve been waiting for all week. At Woodford County, spirit is something to be proud of. The week leading up to spirit day is the best. Each day is a different theme. This year, the 2015-2016 homecoming spirit week consisted of: Monday: Merica’ Monday Tuesday: Support A Senior/ Favorite College Wednesday: Class Color Day Thursday: Cowboy up for a Cure Friday: Spirit Day Spirit week is the chance for each class to compete for the spirit stick. Your class can earn the spirit stick by participating in each day’s theme, dominating the “change wars,” winning dodgeball, and by decorating your class float and section of the gym the best, according to the judges. Here in Woodford County, this is a very big deal. The goals for spirit week are: 1. Earn the most points first 2. Earn the spirit stick 3. Receive bragging rights and the honor to call your class, THE most spirited.

Woodford County spirit is really shown at the 2014 homecoming pep rally. (By Woodford County Yearbook)

The class who accomplishes these goals, is truly THE best. Along with these goals, Homecoming has a theme. The theme this year was “Woodford Spirit You Should Fear It.” Also, each class has the choice to choose an underlying theme. This theme is then used for their float, gym decorations, and class shirts. This year’s Homecoming themes were: Freshman- Fear our Spirit (homecoming theme) Sophomore- Sneaky Sophomores Junior- Junior Jury “Hammer Down” Senior- WCPD In response to the question, how do you feel as you enter the gym before a pep rally, Lindsey Carroll, senior class president stated, “As you walk in, you can feel the adrenaline rushing through your body and bouncing off the walls. It stresses me out walking in and not knowing how things are going to turn out and not being able to control things.” This shows how involved and excited Woodford County students really get. Something else that Woodford County students are involved in is producing the Jacket Journal. The Fall Issue of the 2015-2016 Jacket Journal stated, “The enthusiastic spirit week came to a climax Friday afternoon when the senior class of 2016 took home the crown.” The seniors walked away with the spirit stick this time, but when Jacketfest rolls around it should definitely be interesting.

Comparing Woodford’s Spirit

Class of 2018 shows off their dance at the 2014 homecoming pep rally. (By Woodford County Yearbook)

Now I realize other schools have pep rallies and spirit weeks, but how does Woodford’s spirit relate to theirs? Western Hills has always been one of our rivals because they are in our district. Now, when it comes to spirit week and pep rallies what are they like? I asked Kristen Sprouse, sophomore at Hills to give a brief description of their pep rallies. She said, “Our pep rallies are entertaining, but we don’t have a spirit stick and the students don’t get very competitive; however, our spirit is really shown at sporting events through our student section.”

Western Hills always has students attending their games no matter if they’re home or away. Kristen also said, “The amount of people at our football games is unreal. Everyone comes and everyone participates in the theme.” Some of their themes include tie dye, white out, black out, and beach theme. These are very similar to the themes at the Woodford County football games. Students at Hills get very involved and seem to show their spirit through sporting events rather than pep rallies. While students at Woodford show their spirit through multiple events.

Controversy Over Class Dance Over the past few years, class dances have always been a major part of pep rallies. Each class gets a group of girls and/or boys together and comes up with a dance to different songs. Homecoming you pick two songs and then are given a third song, but for Jacketfest the music is all up to the students. The students are given more freedom than usual, not many restrictions are placed on these dances.

However, after the 2014-2015 school year, class dances were officially taken away. This caused lots of debates and arguments between students and even some of the administration. Class dances have now been replaced with a dodgeball tournament and most believe this was for the better. This will not have an effect on the love and Spirit of The Woodford County High School.

Importance of Spirit Spirit is something all schools need. It gets students engaged and involved and it allows the students to be proud of their school. As a Woodford County student, I am proud to say this is where I go to school. I am proud to be on the Woodford Women’s soccer team and appreciate all the students that come to support the team. All sports teams here at Woodford tend to love the student section. It shows the players that people really do care. I can also say that Woodford County pep rallies will always be one of my most favorite parts of high school. I love seeing all the classes come together and also enjoy showing the teachers and administration how proud we are of our school. Everyone here in Woodford realizes how

special our pep rallies are. Superintendent Scott Hawkins even puts aside all his work for the day to attend them. This shows how involved he is. Overall, Woodford County is a wonderful school system to be a part of. Our academics, sports, and spirit only makes life here at school better. School spirit creates a positive learning environment for both students and teachers and brings the school together in unity. As a highschool student, I realize there will always be “cliques,” but the student body is brought together through pep rallies and healthy competitions between the classes. These are the things that makes them excited and motivated for school. Im glad Woodford realizes how important spirit is. By: Ashton Moore

When you ask a kid what they want to be when they grow up, you can expect a variety of answers: firefighter, policeman, princess, just to name a few. One common answer among active kids is that they want to be a Pro-athlete. While this may seem like the cute dream of a child with a big imagination, students here in Woodford County are actually on the road to professional sports- they’re going D1. 9 10

D1? What’s That?

Football

The power trio: (left to right) Drake Jackson, Saige Young, and Seth Joest (courtesy of Saige Young)

That being said, the number of students at WCHS who are either going D1 or have received D1 offers is pretty impressive. This year’s football team, for example, has three D1 athletes in the offensive line: Drake Jackson, Seth Joest, and Saige Young. Jackson committed to the University of Kentucky last winter, while Joest has committed to Western Kentucky University. Young received offers from Ball State and Troy, but experienced a very serious injury towards the end of the season and is now unsure how the situation will play out. All three are seniors this 2015-2016 school year; Jackson will begin training with UK after graduating early in December in preparation for the 2016 season with the Wildcats. This season’s impressive number of D1 athletes, however, is no surprise. As you may know, the football team has just scored a new head coach: former football player for UK and the San Francisco 49ers, Dennis Johnson. Earlier this year, Johnson was inducted into the KHSAA Hall of Fame. He was said to have been ecstatic when he found out he was hired as Woodford County’s head coach, and was ready to take on the challenge of nurturing the existing talent on the team.

This is exactly what he has done. As of the Homecoming game against Madison Central September 25th, the Jackets hold a solid 3-3 record, which are hopeful numbers compared to last year’s season ending with a 4-7 win-lose ratio (the football team hasn’t seen a winning season since 2007 with Coach Tracy, who now In case you don’t know, the NCAA Division 1 (D1) is the highest level of college sports in the coaches for Franklin County). The team United States. Offering 23 sports throughout the year, the NCAA Division 1 currently has over will continue to train harder, preparing 460,000 student-athletes. So, yeah, this number seems pretty big, but not in comparison to the to break the losing streak, as well as prep 20.2 million students who attend college in the U.S. each year. This means that D1 athletes, repJackets take the field in the 2015 game against Franklin County their college-bound players for their D1 resenting just 2.3% of all American college students, are truly the best of the best. on September 4th. Baseball

Softball However, members of Woodford’s gridiron gang aren’t the only ones who have received D1 attention. The LadyJacket softball team has an incredible lineup, ranked 4th in the state and 147th nationwide. Senior player Lindsay Anderson committed to Morehead State University in July; Caitlin Ferguson, also in the class of 2016, committed to the University of Louisville. Only a junior this year, Bethany Todd has committed to play at UK, while Caitlin Karo and Ariel Dailey, also juniors, have both made commitments to University of Tennessee at Martin and Southern Indiana University, respectively. All of these commitments were verbal, but Anderson and Ferguson are more than ready to sign in the spring, and they are looking forward to a successful senior season.

Unlike the football team, Woodford County’s softball team has had a history of D1 players and winning seasons. Last year, the ladies prevailed with a 33-4-1 (win-lose-tie) record, and had a total of four players from the class of 2015 to play college ball. These players include Mandy Head, Brooke Corum, Keely Moussette, and Kaitlyn Coleman. Coleman attends the University of San Diego, a Division 1 school. Credit for training the team can be given to Head Coach Sasha Turansky, who has been coaching Woodford for the last four years. Turansky received All County, All District, and All Region honors as a catcher for her team at Madison Central High School and began her coaching career in 2009 at Tate’s Creek, eventually moving to Woodford County in 2012. Coach T., as the players call her, helps with the recruitment of players and preparation for their college softball careers.

Much like the softball team, Woodford’s baseball team has a history of success that continues today. In 2012, the team defeated Henderson County in the state championship, an incredible victory coached by Jeff Parrett. Many players from the championship team moved ahead to play for Division 1 schools, including Logan Parrett, who plays for the University of Kentucky. Clinton Hollon, a member of Woodford’s graduating class of 2013, was drafted out of high school to play on the Toronto Blue Jays’ AAA team.

Nate Beavers, senior, has considering a different path than most in order to pursue his baseball career. After he graduates, Beavers believes he will play baseball at Lincoln Trail College in Robinson, Illinois. Although this isn’t a Division 1 school, it is a place where exceptional athletes can go to train for a D1 sport, while still getting their college credit. Beavers plans to play baseball at Lincoln Trail for two years, before transferring to Western Kentucky University where he will further his career. 2013 second baseman Eli Boggess dives for a ball in the Regional game against Tates Creek (courtesy of kentucky.com)

Woodford: Home of Excellence These few names mentioned make up just a small portion of Woodford County’s history, and future, of athletic excellence. The wrestling team has had 56 individual state champions, holding the Kentucky record, as well as 13 team championships, since 1972. The MatJackets’ most recent team victory was in 2006, when they had 5 individual state champions. Woodford’s golf team has seen many regional victories, and in 1985 they girls went on to gain the title of first runner-up in the state tournament.

The Good, the Bad & the Healthy By: Chance Burnett

Along with the life expectancy of our ancestors, our bodies have also changed overtime. We don’t digest the same way that Paleolithic man digested food. Back when Paleolithic man ate lots of plants, their appendix was hard at work digesting things like leaves. Now our appendix is just an annoyance. This diet is a problem because it is labelled as a great option but it is mostly useless, some people gain weight because they go crazy with fatty meats. The Gluten Free Diet is another one that sounds good but is very impractical. Gluten is a protein found in wheat. It is found in many food products including bread, baked goods, cereals, pastas, etc. The Gluten free diet was made for people with Celiac disease or an gluten intolerance. Celiac disease is a genetic disease in which gluten damages the small intestine. Foods you will leave out if you go gluten free Some of the many fast food restaurants.

There are lots of healthy choices, even in your local gorcery store.

D

id you know that fast food causes an average over 2 million cases of diabetes in the United States alone? This fact scares me, and I believe we should look at how we eat and how it correlates to our health. I have always been fascinated with how eating certain things can affect your body. I have done countless hours of research and have watched countless documentaries on the good effects and bad effects of foods. I have studied different restaurants and different diets to uncover the truth about the supposed “health problems” or “health benefits” these eating styles can cause. From dieting to exercise, you should alway look for healthy choices.

The Problem with Dieting

Dieting is a big part of the American culture. We believe these celebrities and articles that tell us these diets could change our lives. Dieting is not necessarily a bad thing, but there are certain diets that you should be cautious of. The Paleo Diet is a famous one that causes many problems. The Paleo Diet is essentially eating certain fruits, vegetables, and meats like our ancestors ate. Supporters of this diet say it will help you be “healthy” like our ancestors were. One problem is how different or ancestors were from us.

The Gluten Free Diet is needed in these people, but some people without these diseases have taken to using this diet, as countless articles tell us the benefits of it. The so-called “benefits” are really a placebo effect. The diet is mostly an inconvenience as gluten is in many food products. If gluten doesn’t affect you negatively, there is no need to go through with this diet.

The problem with fast food

No matter how you eat, you should stay far away from these factories of grease and fat. They are everywhere. The restaurants with the bright enticing colors and tempting treats plastered on the sides. They boast sales in the billions. This is because of the convenience fast food restaurants put in our faces. We just sit here and watch our country become unhealthier and unhealthier. This is not our fault, as these businesses have the best of the best marketing teams to pull us in.

17 18

One of the biggest problems we face with fast food is the empty calories. These calories provide no nutritional value and pack on the fat. We keep going because the calories don’t keep us full long term. This tricks your brain into wanting more food, ultimately leading to you buying more if their food, which puts more money in their pockets. Another problem is the misleading advertising. Some restaurants are self proclaimed “healthy restaurants, even though a little research proves they are worse than some restaurants with a bad reputation for unhealthiness. McDonald’s Premium Grilled Chicken Classic Sandwich has 350 calories, 820mg of sodium and 9g of fat. However, Veggie Grill, which is known for its “healthiness”, has a similar chicken sandwich with 510 calories, 890 mg of sodium and 25g of fat. If you want to look at more of these statistics, most major food chains have full menu nutritional values on line. The Solution Even with all these unhealthy temptations, living in the great country known as the United States gives us many healthy options as well. There are stores and sections of grocery stores dedicated to healthy foods and supplements. Vitamin Shoppe is a store filled with supplements to help aid you in your journey to better health. Whole foods is a supermarket known for its healthy, organic food where

you can find foods easily that will meet your nutritional needs. Even though you can find these healthy food pretty easy, everyone has a different goal. Someone may want to lose weight, while someone may want to build muscle.

Slimming down

With obesity in America as high 35.7 percent in all adults, we all hopefully don’t want to be a part of that group. We all have tried the diets and fads, but let’s get down to the cold hard facts. To lose weight nutritionally speaking, you must consume less calories. This may mean consuming less fat and carbohydrates. With 9 calories per gram of fat, the first thing you may want to lessen is fat from sources like fast food and junk food. There are some healthy fats, like avocados, but these fats should still be eaten in moderation. Carbs should also be limited, as they carry 4 calories with every gram. You should still get enough protein and all the other essentials to stay healthy. Diet is the biggest factor in your weight and health. Having the body you want is 70% diet and 30% exercise. If you can, cut back on sweets, junk food and fast food as a whole. You should probably give yourself a day out of every two weeks to eat anything you want, but don’t go overboard. Even after you lose weight, don’t revert back to your old habits and gain it all back.

Bulking up

Even though we are known as one of the fattest countries, we are also one of the most beefed up countries. There are countless bodybuilders, fitness gurus and personal trainers in this country. If you ask them about how to gain muscle or bulk up in general, they will first talk about your diet. The first thing to know is you absolutely have to cut out all candy and sweets if you want to gain any muscle. If your looking to bulk up and weight, there are two different ways you can go, the clean bulk or the dirty bulk. The clean bulk involves ramping up your calories with lots of fruits, vegetables, meats and other healthy foods. The dirty bulk involves eating everything in sight to gain weight. The biggest thing you want to focus on is getting enough protein in your diet. This could come from meats, cheeses, nuts and protein supplements that include whey and soy protein. If you decide to exercise or lift weights, you should also get plenty of carbs, which comes from sources including brown rice, whole wheat pasta, and sweet potatoes. The biggest rule of bulking up is your should slowly ramp up your calories in any way you choose but you should see how your body reacts to the change.

Why this all matters

Your diet is one of the biggest deciding factors in your quality of life and your life expectancy. Based on what you eat, you could live for 10 more years or 100 more years. Fast food will always be there, but I believe we should be educated on how bad it really is for you. We should be shown the downsides of mainstream dieting and we should have actual scientific proof of them working, not just claims by one or two people. If you really want to lose weight, you have to stick with a diet specifically tailored to you. Whether you are trying to slim down or bulk up, you can take little or no days off if you want to see any results. The biggest thing to remember is to take everything in moderation, no matter how healthy it seems.

Dont be fooled by “healthy foods”, they may not be as healthy as you think.

Healthy Living Why a healthy lifestyle is important By Casey Taylor

O

ne of the biggest things in America right now is fitness. Obesity has become a big problem, and that is why some of our biggest leaders, like the first lady Mrs Obama, are working to fix it. According to obesitycampaign.org, 2 out of 3 American adults are considered obese, also every 1 out of 3 kids are considered obese. There are so many ways to get it good shape and be fit. The biggest ways are to get physically active, eat healthy at the same time. There are also tons of benefits of being physically fit, both now and in the long run. Better Health One of the most obvious reasons to stay fit is for better health. Fitness leads to better health. One of the health benefits that it can have is the ability to reduce cholesterol levels. Regular exercise has been proven to reduce “bad” cholesterol levels (LDL) and increase “good” cholesterol (HDL). Cholesterol levels rise with age, so one easy way to keep them down is staying fit. Keeping your cholesterol levels down can

be critical, mainly because of the things LDL can cause. They can cause things such as heart disease or heart attacks. Staying fits consists of eating healthy, and physical activity. For the older people that high cholesterol mainly affects, getting physical activity can be as easy as taking a 30 minute walk around your neighborhood every night. Eating healthy is the harder part, you have to watch what you are eating every day, as well as potentially changing what you eat. Another health risk that it can help prevent high blood pressure. The heart needs to exercise to stay in shape, when it is exercised it will work its best. It will be able to pump blood faster and more efficiently. Regular exercise will help both of those problems, and they will keep your heart running good. Better Self Esteem Staying fit and being healthy will definitely help your self esteem. When you look good and feel good, it is always good for your self esteem. When you are able to exercise consistently it gives you a sense of

achievement and that will in turn increase your self esteem. Regardless of your body appearance, regular physical activity will boost your self esteem.

team in it and some of the athletes with play for an hour with the children. This will in turn motivate the kids to be active for an hour a day.

Boosts Energy One of the best benefits of staying fit, is that it will improve your energy levels. This benefit is best for the adults. They are the most busy, with things like a job and usually children. You can forget coffee and caffeine, just by going on a easy walk. Most people argue that they don’t have time for exercise, but you can use just 20-30 minutes of your TV time or something else to get your walk in.

In the Long Run Staying fit will help you from being able to fight sickness to even living longer. Being fit strengthens things like your immune system and your circulatory system. When you exercise your blood will be pumped around your body more efficiently, which will help cholesterol problems. It can reduce the risk of heart disease, and so much more things.

Doing Something about it Many may know about America’s first lady Michelle Obama and what she is doing about childhood obesity. Childhood obesity has reportedly tripled over the years, and every one in three kid is overweight. That is why she has created the program called “Let’s Move.” It sets goals to end childhood obesity. The most known thing that she has done is she has changed all the schools food and made them healthier nationally. Some school systems have even gone farther to make them better and healthier. Recently President Obama has proposed a 10 billion dollar funding Child Nutrition Act is reauthorized this year. Another thing that people have done to try and stop childhood obesity, is something that the NFL made called “Play 60.” Play 60 is a program that inspires kids to have physical activity for 60 minutes a day. The program goes around to cities with a

Being fit also slows down the effects of ageing. When you exercise a growth hormone is produced that has been shown to reverse the effects of ageing. It does it by

In conclusion staying fit has many health benefits and there are tons of way to get and stay fit. Staying fit can help prevent health problems like diabetes and high cholesterol. It can also do things like boost your energy and give you better self esteem.

After WWII, americans started to get worried about the health of the young. Because of WWII the nation’s economy changed drastically. Factory’s had taken many farmers out of the fields, fewer jobs required heavy labor. Also the television was quite new and americans would rather watch that than be physically active. In 1956 President Eisenhower established “the President’s council on youth fitness with executive order.” Even though there was a lot of support for this idea, they were not able to get it working during his time in office. When John F. Kennedy was elected to the office, it was obvious that he was determined to fix the problem of obesity. He created an article in Sports Illustrated, that talked about his proposed ideas for the
