Beach Body on a Budget By: Ian Combs

“Get comfortable with being uncomfortable” said Jillian Micheals, a famous trainer from the TV show “The Biggest Loser”, where you can see some of the biggest people in the United States trim all the way down to around the normal weight. In the show people can end up dropping 300+ pounds depending on how much they weigh. She helped people better themselves, not because she wanted to, but because those people wanted to be healthier and better in general. If you are one of the millions of people that want trim weight, build muscle, lose fat, and overall better yourself on a budget then this is the article for you. You aren’t the only one that wants to get healthier in a cheaper way, over half of Americans are with you.

If you don’t have the confidence to go in the gym, whether it’s because you let the weight pile on or just because you’ve been lazy, go with the no cost or cheap option and start home workouts. If you want a no cost option and decide not to buy weights than you can do push-ups, sit-ups, pullups, crunches, and many different variations of push-ups. Some variations include diamond push-ups and inverted push-ups or you can elevate your feet to train in on your pectoral muscles. Also whenever you are doing these exercises they won’t train in on very specific muscle groups; it would be more like shoulders, chest, abs, and back. Plus if you do the no cost option it’s more difficult to get big legs and big arms, but if you buy weights it will open so many more options for getting built. There are plenty of machines and weight sets you can buy and use for your workout if you want a low cost way to workout. You can buy a cheap weight set at Walmart for only 20$ and small weight machines for 90+ dollars. If you decide to buy weights than you can really focus on key muscle groups to build muscle. This will keep your workout to strictly lifting and almost no cardio. if you are trying to really build muscle than you should spend the extra money and at least get a cheap weight set. Its easier to build up biceps, triceps, quads, and calf muscles. This goes with all muscle groups, but if you are doing the no cost option than you are going to be working abs, chest, shoulders, and your back. This option is going to be best if you are the type of person that won’t go up to the gym that much, but if you see the equipment then you’ll start doing the exercises and get into it. It’s going to end up saving you a lot of money

By: Ian Combs Men and women workout in the world famous Golds’ Gym. Most go in for 4 hours or more, and some even live outside the gym in campers.

on a gym membership that you won’t even use that much. This will end up saving you at least 50 dollars a month depending on how much your gym charges per month. If you are really serious, though, than go ahead and get the gym membership. The next step would be upgrading to a gym membership. At first I would join a cheap gym that gets the job done like YMCA or your local fitness facility will probably work. If you plan on getting really built and going to sizes seen in bodybuilding than I’d join a specific gym that is just for working out, like Gold’s Gym. Go to the gym at least two times a week for about 45 minutes to an hour. If you go more than that or longer than 45 minutes then thats

awesome. Just try to push yourself more and more every week. Each day switch up the muscle groups you are working. That way one day you are working legs, next you are doing abs, next is arms, and so on. You work different muscle groups on different days so you can go up to the gym everyday and not get out of routine. If you work the same ones everyday then you will be too sore to workout the next day, then that throws you off and most people don’t go back after they skip a day. This option is probably going to be best if you are really serious about losing weight and building muscle. this is only going to work if you really do want it and you keep yourself motivated to go to the gym consistently.

Really whenever you start a workout plan to drop weight than a diet and the workout should go hand and hand. Working out will help you trim fat and get tone then the diet will help with dropping the weight. Really try to incorperate eating well into your exercise plan. Like i said previously, staying on a diet will help trim fat and really help you drop weight. Try to stay away from red meats, junk food (like cheetos, swiss rolls, nutter butters, e.t.c.), and sodas. If you can’t live without the red meat than that’s not the end of the world. Just really try to cut back on junk food and soda, or better yet, completely stop eating junk food and drinking soda all together. Junk food and soda have a lot of sugar and useless carbs that your body burns up too fast. Once your body burns up the little amounts of energy in soda and junk food it turns into fat. Being that soda and junk foods’ energy gets burned up so fast, it makes you eat more and therefore bring more fat into your body. When you do start a workout and diet plan the hardest thing to do is to stay motivated and consistent. Make sure in the beginning to really stay with the consistency. It will train your body to want exercise and the more you do it, the better you are going to feel afterwards. After awhile the gym or working out at home will get easier and it will become part of your routine. Staying motivated and consistent is really important for all variations of cost, wether it’s no cost, low cost, or gym membership. For a gym membership it’s really only going to be worth paying the money if you are going almost everyday or everyday.

Money is numbers and numbers never end. If it takes money to be happy, you’re search for happiness will never end- Bob Marley

It has been too long since something new and athletic has come into our lives. We have many sports that we grow up knowing; the history is already there when we try to put our name in the history books. We look up to our “heroes”, but our heroes listen to big money and have no pride. We have been too complacent and too greedy. It’s time for a change. Bo-taoshi.

7

In my search for new and unique sports, I came across a Japanese sport that’s literal translation is “pole bring-down”. I quickly became entranced in the simplicity and chaos of the sport. There are two teams of 150 people. Each team has one pole that is theirs to protect. The teams then split into two 75 people teams, one for offense and one for defense. The

offensive team charges towards their opponents defensive team and the same is happening for the opposing team simultaneously. It is literally a race to see who can bring down the other team’s pole quicker. One would think that the two teams just had a disagreement and are about to fight it out, but there is a lot to admire about it. The organization of hundreds of people, the different waves of positions, and not to mention the endless strategy tactics at your disposal. You can charge at the opposing team and try to knock out their defenses or try to jump on top of them and that’s just the most simple of tactics. There are no rules, no regulations, and no pay. Which means people that play this game in Japan play for pride and that makes it all the more intense.

weekend just like football. The sport would rise in popularity like a rocket because everyone wants to be able to play a sport on TV or yell “ ya’ll get in here, Uncle Ray’s jumping on people’s backs on the television!” Everyone wants a chance at the national spotlight and Botaoshi gives every man or woman that opportunity.

Why have we not thought of a sport like this in America? It is so simple. It’s nothing more than a large scale capture the flag. This is something that can be our own, a chance to make our own records. We have settled for the same old sports for too long while the Japanese have created pure fun. In fact, they have been enjoying this game since the 1940’s when the Japanese military cadets played it.

9

Well...Let’s go back a bit. Maybe it isn’t pure fun for those lucky few that get sent to the hospital. I may have forgotten to mention that the game is played with minimal padding and you may take a foot or two to the face. That is very evident in a video titled, “Japanese Dangerous Sports”. A crowd has gathered around 300 people on a bleak field. It starts off slow, but

before you know it there are 600 feet flying like bees all around. They land anywhere they can. On a face, your back, or even on the ground because the defense have denied your attempt to jump on them. Not uncommon to Bo-taoshi are Bruce Lee like kicks. Especially if you are the ninja. His job is to sit atop his team’s pole and use any means necessary to protect it. And yes, that does mean you’ll have to become a dentist.

Kids play basketball on the streets in hope becoming a proffesional athlete.

“Oh, is that a cavity I see? I’ll just knock it out for you with my foot!” While I may be kidding about the dentist thing, there very well could be a dentist playing. That’s the best part. You can be anyone. You don’t have to be a professional athlete to play Bo-taoshi. From an out of shape man in his 20’s. , anyone can play. We could have a volunteer game play on national television every

Isn’t that our right? The pursuit of happiness. In some cases national exposure and exercise is fun and beneficial. So, technical it would be unconstitutional to postpone Bo-taoshi in America. It is our right as Americans and human beings to have as many opportunities to do what we want and the way i see it, this is another opportunity for someone to punch their ticket out of the projects or ghetto. And, It’s even a common game among kids on the

So, while we may have popular and fun sports in America such as football and basketball, I think it’s time we mix it up a bit. Gone are the days of the super bowl, it’s time for the super pole! With a few changes to the safety of

course, I can see the headline now, “Bo-taoshi: innocent, fun or sinister evil meant to injure our youth?” But, add a couple foot pads and some helmets and boom-badabang! You’ve got yourself a new and innovative way to spend your weekends. But, what sport is without injuries? Even the NFL is under scrutiny for the way they handle concussions, so we would not be alone in our fight against the media. We could even become allies with the NFL. We would

In the end, the introduction of Bo-taoshi to America will benefit everyone in some way. It will give Americans a sense of pride that is missing in some people’s hearts. The Japaneses have always taken pride in everything they do and if we get anything from this sport, I hope it is a sense of pride. Athletes in America play for greed and a lust for money. Bo-taoshi is volunteer and therefore makes it personal. Nobody cares if they lose a game if at the end of the day they go home to a million dollar paycheck, but when you put your own time into it and you go home without a cent to show for what you just did. Then it matters, then it hits you in the heart and you care. If we can instill this attitude at a young age, then maybe we can it will overflow into other parts of our lives. Students will study harder, workers will work harder, and leaders will lead with confidence. We have needed something to wake America up for a while and I have found it. Bo-Taoshi.

DT (90) Melvin Lewis used athletics to get away from his hometown of Compton, California. Just one example of how sports give kids opportunities to have a better life.

Healthy Habits, Healthy Body By Molly Hall

“The American Healthy stereotype is to weigh an ideal weight, eat the vegetables you wish you did not have to, and be the fittest and best version of yourself. Several Americans find themselves dedicated to this idea at the beginning of January but do not see it through to March; returning to their bad habits. Unfortunately, many Americans are still affected by the long term consequences of bad habits causing 1 in 3 Americans to be plagued with cardiovascular disease. Because of Americans busy working state, many do not know the ways to prevent terminal diseases. However, there is always a way to subside around junk food cravings or eating out of boredom.

Another way is to image in a glass wine glass being placed in your abdomen. If you slouch or lean over, the imaginary glass will shatter causing your insides to rupture. The last way is to place your feet flatly on the floor and sit six inches off the back of your chair. If that method doesn’t work, try imagining a six inch dagger protruding from the back of your seat. Sitting up straight activates your core. This engages your abdominal muscles and can make your muscles stronger.

Healthy Gums, Healthy Heart

A bad habit that many people are aware of is failing to floss regularly. While many people understand this can keep your gums and teeth healthy, many do not understand how healthy it keeps the rest of your body. After drinking or eating, the particle remnants can become lodged in between teeth and gums. Bacteria can grow and spread even if you brushed your teeth that morning. Bacteria is known for causing inflammation in blood vessels. Restricted blood vessels going from your mouth to your heart can cause high blood pressure. The solution to this problem is as easy as ABC.

While it might be uncomfortable, flossing daily can drastically improve your gum and heart health. A creative way in remembering to floss is to have a case next to your television remote or power source. This way you can floss while continuing to catch up on your favorite show. If you want to floss at the end of the day, stand up straight in front of the mirror and watch as your spine becomes straight and your shoulders go back. Do this everyday to remember to do both healthy habits.

Keeping a case of floss beside your television remote can help you remember to floss daily.

Typical Stereotypes

The American stereotype of healthy is weighing under a certain ammount, ceasing to eat fast food, and being the fittest and best version of yourself. Something that is not on that list is assuming you are not at risk to diseases or cancer. Many Americans only think about diseases once a year. In a

recent servey, it is shown that women who had yearly exams could be diagnosed with terminal diseases and had a higher survival rate than women who had irregular exams. By assuming that you are exempt from diseases, the window of health opportunities begins to shrink. The easiest way to solve this problem is realizing everyone is at risk to all diseases. The next step is making sure your yearly exams and shots are up to date. Health is not just about eating the right foods or weighing a certain weight, it is about how well you can take care of your body. Being the best version of yourself requires breaking bad habits and creating the window of health to increase while having an open approach to becoming healthier. Reminding yourself to walk while watching television or sitting up straight at work may seem like a burden at first, but will change your health perspective. Just think, your body and heart will thank yourself in three months! http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20475961,00.html http://www.abc.net.au/health/thepulse/ stories/2014/07/24/4043618.htm http://www.abc.net.au/health/thepulse/ stories/2014/07/24/4043618.htm Photos by: Maddie Hall
