Women Building a Better Oklahoma City
President’s Letter Happy Holidays Team!
Nazette Zuhdi-Cleaver
MISSION The Junior League of Oklahoma City, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
I often speak about the process of opening our hearts by serving our community through JLOC. Perhaps no time of the year is more powerful for feeling love and compassion for those around us than during the holidays. I hope we can all use this time to embrace the good we’re doing for others, even as we count the blessings in our own lives with our friends and family. And indeed, so much good is being accomplished this year in JLOC, from learning and improving ourselves to sharing the best of ourselves with others. On the learning side of things, we began with an empowering topic at September’s general Membership meeting with fellow JLOC Active member Rebekah Wheeler presenting, “Positive Self Image: You Are Enough.” As Mrs. Oklahoma 2015, she knows how to send a strong message that’s important to us all. She was joined by another powerful speaker, Brian Attebery, a certified fitness trainer and owner of Results Fitness in Edmond, OK. He is also the official trainer for the Miss Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Illinois and Arkansas Miss USA Pageant Systems. He spoke with us about “Ten Fitness Myths for Women.” At October’s general Membership meeting, we had a chance to learn from Elaine Agather, South Region Head and Managing Director of The Private Bank of J.P. Morgan and Chairman of Chase’s Dallas Region. She taught us “Elaine’s Eight,” her principles for success and leadership. For example, “Saddle Your Own Horse…then Ride with a Good Team” and “Practice Free Speech and Sprinkle it Liberally with Thank Yous.” To keep our learning gears moving us forward, our TLDC Chair, Laura Winkler, organized some amazing training opportunities and social activities. These included Technology and Group Share training, Public Speaking, Resume and Interview Skills, and Safe Sleep Practices for Infants, along with a social gathering at Vast, Fall Festivities with Pumpkin Carving, and more. Meanwhile, some of our best learning comes from actively engaging as leaders and volunteers in the community. Thank you to Kelly Brown, Chair, and the Mistletoe Market Board,-who all worked hard and had a joyous time putting on Mistletoe Market. Thanks to some of the “extras” of this year’s event, Mistletoe Market was a definite success! Now we’ve turned our attention to the holidays, starting with the Annual Members’ Holiday Open House on December 8, 2015, at Sustainer Carol Johnson’s house. Many Members attended and enjoyed sharing the depth and meaning of the holidays as a group, strengthening the bond between JLOC Members. Finally, there is still so much to come in JLOC this year, including our newest fundraiser, Speaker in the City, with Jillian Michaels on January 31, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Civic Center. I can’t wait to continue sharing the fun and growth with all of you. I’m also excited to share my ongoing gratitude for what you contribute. We have so much talent here, so much goodwill, and so much energy that I cannot thank you enough for what we’re accomplishing and the way in which we’re accomplishing it. May the love and warmth of the season embrace each one of you. With heartfelt gratitude,
VISION The Junior League of Oklahoma City, Inc. will empower volunteers to impact our community and enrich lives.

SPEAKER IN THE CITY FEATURING JILLIAN MICHAELS – JANUARY 31, 2016
ersonal trainer, entrepreneur and bestselling author Jillian Michaels will be the featured speaker at the inaugural Speaker in the City event taking place January 31, 2016, at 2 p.m. at The Civic Center Music Hall in downtown Oklahoma City. Perhaps considered one of the most inspiring people on television through her role as a
4 DECEMBER 2015
trainer, wellness expert and life coach on her hit TV shows and regular TV appearances, Michaels has created a brand name for herself. Every week she motivates millions in every form of media from TV to publishing to her website and daily e-newsletter. “We are so excited to offer this new, motivational health event to the public,” said Alexis Lux, Speaker in the City Chair for the Junior League. “Jillian Michaels captured our hearts each week as she pushed contestants to be their best self on the Biggest Loser. And we know she will do the same with our guests at Speaker in the City.” As a motivator and role model, Michaels has a unique connection with her audience that stems from her own personal journey toward wellness. Before becoming a big media success, Michaels struggled with her own weight. She was determined to reach her goals — and through dedication and hard work, she did. “We hope to motivate Oklahoma City residents to take charge of their own mental and physical wellbeing, and then encourage their friends and family to do the same,” Lux said. Junior League Active and Provisional Members are required to purchase a $50 ticket to Speaker in the City, but the event is also open to the public. Do you want to meet Jillian Michaels? Be sure to purchase tickets to the VIP reception with a photo opportunity immediately following her presentation. Junior League Members can get access to this unique experience for only $100 more. That’s a $50 savings over the public price of $200. Proceeds from the event will be reinvested in the Oklahoma City community through a number of Junior League’s health-focused community projects.
For more information on Speaker in the City or to purchase tickets, visit www.jloc.org. We know our Members are excited to support Junior League’s newest fundraiser. If you still have questions about Speaker in the City, please see the FAQs below.

GENERAL MEETING RECAP By Fareshteh Hamidi The Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club has historically complimented JLOC events with an unmatched air of elegance; thus making the return of JLOC’s General Membership Meetings an easy choice for 2015-16 President, Nazette Zuhdi Cleaver. The first two General Membership Meetings of the year perfectly captured JLOC’s current health and wellness focus and the team work required to create a healthy community. September’s meeting featured guest speakers Brian Attebery, owner of Results Fitness and Nutrition in Edmond, Oklahoma, and JLOC’s own Active Member Rebekah Wheeler. Brian is the official trainer for the Miss Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, and Arkansas, Miss USA Pageant Systems as well as the official trainer for the Miss Oklahoma, Missouri and Washington Miss America Pageant Systems. He has led many of these contestants to win fitness awards on a national level through his exercise and nutrition physiology. Brian spent his time at the meeting debunking the “Top 10 Fitness Myths for JLOC Members,” and answering their related questions. His client, Mrs. Rebekah Wheeler, discussed becoming Mrs. Oklahoma 2015 and the platform she has promoted during her reign: “Positive Self Image - You Are Enough.” October’s meeting energized the Membership for this year’s Mistletoe Market. Mistletoe Market
Chair Kelly Brown, and Vice Chair, Liza Cryder revealed the top 10 reasons to make Market a must this fall. Elaine Agather was the evening’s guest speaker. She is the South Region Head and Managing Director of The Private Bank of J.P. Morgan and Chairman of Chase’s Dallas Region. Ms. Agather shared her eight principles for success and leadership, titled “Elaine’s Eight.” Elaine Agather was the evening’s guest speaker. Members were informed of JLOC’s community projects and volunteer impact year-to-date numbers reflect outreach to over 1,958 children and 570 adults in the 972+ hours served between June and November of this year. Another noteworthy topic from October’s meeting was the Speaker in the City fundraiser preview. January 31, 2016 will mark the inaugural event at the Civic Center with fitness expert Jillian Michaels sharing a wealth of knowledge on overall wellness. This event will draw more of the community into JLOC’s health and wellness focus, amplifying the League’s presence in the healthy transformation of Oklahoma City.

Provisional Events & Announcements

W
ith the year halfway completed, the Provisional class is well on their way to Active Membership! The class has had many socials, trainings, and courses that have continued their development within JLOC. Provisonals said goodbye to summer with their “Provisionals in Paradise” social in late August; where the Allied Arts rooftop was transformed into a tropical paradise by the social committee. In early fall, the class partnered with OKC Harvest to kick off their community projects. Three separate “Dig Days” were held at local elementary schools: Linwood Elementary, Ralph Downs Elementary, and Hillcrest Elementary. On each Dig Day, the Provisional class built community gardens from start to finish in just a few hours. It was hard work, but Larry Heyman, co-founder of OKC Harvest, made the entire experience fun and educational. As part of the Dig Days, JLOC presented OKC Harvest with a $7,500 check. Provisional member and co-chair of OKC Harvest Dig Days, Emily Conrad, described the impact of the gardens built, “Through these Dig Days, I love that our efforts will give children the opportunity to better understand

the fundamentals of true nutrition and the positive impact this will have on their life. Proper nutrition is very important and needs to be emphasized at an early age and the gardens help to do just that. The gardens are a great visual and can serve as a constant reminder for parents and children to make healthier choices. The gardens planted will have a lasting impact on the school and the community around it. OKC Harvest was the perfect organization to partner with in accordance with JLOC’s focus on health.” Provisionals began their educational courses in September with an entertaining and informative history of JLOC by Sustainers Gayle Semtner and Jeary Seikel. During their second educational course in October, Amy McDougall, PAT Chair, led Provisionals in “Leopardy” (League Jeopardy). Leopardy contestants were asked questions Jeopardy-style on JLOC’s organizational chart including the structure and purpose of the JLOC Board of Directors, Committees, and Councils. The JLOC Board of Directors attended the sessions to introduce themselves, explain more about their positions, and provide a helping hand

in Leopardy. Congratulations to Leopardy winners, Jenn Kaiser and Emily Conrad! To celebrate Halloween, the class held a “Nightmare on 10th Street” social at Fassler Hall; there were a number of creative costumes and a spook-tacular time was had by all. Congratulations to our costume winners: 3rd place, Tracie Simard as “A League of Their Own”; 2nd Place, Kini Gainer as a loofah; and 1st place, Jenn Kaiser as a bunch of grapes. Last, but not least, planning has begun for this year’s May General Meeting; the theme will be Alice in Wonderland. The Provisionals can’t wait to show all of JLOC a magical time. The May General Meeting will be May 10th at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club.

Sustainer Spotlight Margaret Hoge
m
BY FARESHTEH HAMIDI
argaret Hoge’s Junior League career began in Dallas, TX upon earning an Art Education degree from the University of North Texas. Once her husband-to-be completed law school in Dallas, the move was made to Margaret’s hometown of Oklahoma City where Mr. Hoge accepted employment, and Margaret took the JLOC by storm. You may recognize Margaret’s name from your copy of “Goodnight, OKC,” because as a Sustainer, she lent her illustration talents to commemorate JLOC’s 10-year literacy focus. Oklahoma’s #1 selling book was not the first JLOC project to which Margaret provided her abilities. Her first placement following her Provisional year was the Dallas Art Workshop. As an Active Member, she
created the CARE coloring book, and has played a starring role in art education within Oklahoma City. She was heavily involved with Excellent Educators from its inception as a JLOC project until the Oklahoma City Public School Foundation could sustain the program without volunteers. Margaret created the lower school art program at her alma mater, Heritage Hall, where she has since taught for 13 years. The program consistently ranks as a top 10 art program in the state, and she has been named the Oklahoma Elementary Art Educator of the Year. The extensive JLOC career linked to Margaret’s name allowed her to serve gracefully as JLOC President during the 1998-99 term. Some years are more challenging to carry this title than others – 1999 having been one of those years.
An Oil Pastel by Margaret Hoge

Sustainer Margaret Hoge
Margaret recalls her extreme pride of JLOC’s immediate response to the horrific May 3rd tornado – “donating $50,000 to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, manning the KWTV Tornado Relief Hotline, and distributing necessities to those who lost everything.” No doubt, this was a time that called for great organization and poise from Oklahoma City’s volunteers, and the JLOC was in place to set the standard. Margaret believes it is important for Members to offer their special talents if they fit into a placement, and she lived this motto for nearly two decades while serving as an Active. Her illustrating career was catapulted by contributing her artistic vision to JLOC year after year. Her second book “If the Fence Could Talk,” was published this year, in which she credits her initial exposure as an illustrator to “Goodnight, OKC.” Margaret Hoge’s legacy is shaped by many pieces; her daughter, Katie, is involved with the Junior League as a Provisional in Dallas. Meanwhile, the numerous artistic and educational ventures she has set into motion are certainly here to stay.

What if your favorite OKC memory? My favorite OKC memory is probably my wedding. I got married at the Skirvin Hotel in the Venetian Room, a few years after the hotel was renovated and reopened. I had picked the Skirvin as my (hypothetical) wedding venue two years before I even met my husband; because I was married in the fall, in the middle of football season, we actually booked the Skirvin before I was officially engaged. Luckily that didn't run my now husband off!

What is your favorite holiday tradition? I love seeing all the Christmas lights and decorations around town! My family used to drive around and look at all the neighborhoods, as well as all the city displays. I still love to do that and make a fun holiday night of hot chocolate and Christmas lights! I also love pulling out all my favorite Christmas movies.
How do you stay active during the winter months? If I don't do a workout in the morning, it usually doesn't happen. In the winter, I set my heat to come on higher in the early morning hours, so it's on and running when I get up! I also lay out everything I need the night before, so I don't have to think too hard about it. For the days I don't want to leave the house, I love pulling up workout videos on YouTube.
14 DECEMBER 2015
What is your New Year’s resolution? Overall, I want to continue being active; one particular fitness goal is to run my best half marathon time yet. I also want to work on being more present; I have a tendency to always be thinking about things in the future and planning for what's to come rather than focusing on what's happening right now.
Jamie Manoles BOARD MEMBER What is your favorite holiday tradition? I love buying gifts for others, especially my girls. But when we open our gifts on Christmas Eve, my step-dad Dave, always reads the Christmas Story to us to remind us of who and why we are celebrating in the first place.
I also love all the celebrations throughout the season, starting with Thanksgiving. It's one of the few times a year I get to spend all day in the kitchen with my husband, Mom and Grandmother talking about traditions and learning family recipes. My husband and I also love to make the pies together
the night before. And, I can't leave out watching some of the classic Christmas movies like Christmas Vacation, Love Actually and A Christmas Story. And of course all of the TV holiday cartoons with my girls. It all really is about spending quality time with my family and showing them how much I love them!
How do you stay active during the winter months? Well, to be honest with this one, I have been lacking in any formal active behavior in the winter months the past few years. This year I plan on starting Couch to 5K
in November because I love going on a walk/jog by myself and want to get back my pre-baby body (she is 3 by the way! ). It is in print so now I must do it!
What is your New Year’s resolution? I was thinking of about 20 things I could put here when I realized I probably need to be nicer to myself. So, my resolution is to not be so hard on myself and see myself through others eyes.

Deanne McGehee ACTIVE What is your favorite holiday tradition? My favorite holiday tradition centers around food and family. For whatever reason, when my brother and I became teenagers (I think we wanted to sleep in on Christmas morning!) we began exchanging family gifts on Christmas Eve. As my brother and I became adults with our own families, my mom still hosts the family get-together, which is nice, as it allows us to celebrate Christmas morning with our own families. Instead of a formal meal, she has always prepared our favorite party dishes barbecue smokies, Mexican layered dip, pies galore - the standard stuff. One year, she thought about changing it up, making it more healthy, but we all resisted. I do a pretty good job of eating healthy throughout the year, so I think we can splurge for one night!
How do you stay active during the winter months? This is a tough one. I would love to be one of those people that can get up at the crack of dawn and knock
16 DECEMBER 2015
out a workout before my day begins, but it will just never happen for me. So, luckily I have a friend that keeps me motivated. We joined a gym and we have been going to exercise classes together. I do so much better attending a class because the gym setting is so overwhelming to me. I would much rather show up and have someone tell me what to do for an hour and be done with it. I try to go a few times a week. My favorite is a weight training class called Body Pump at Gold's Gym.Â
What is your New Year's resolution? You know, through the years, I've had resolutions: eat better, workout more, spend more time with family, etc. But then I realize, these are things I try to do all year long anyway. When the New Year comes around, it is nice to reflect on the past 12 months and then look forward to the 12 in front of you. But I don't get caught up in picking one aspect of my life to do better anymore, I just live each day the best I can - enjoying my time with my family and friends.

What is your favorite holiday tradition? My earliest holiday tradition involved creating a 50 page, front and back, book of Christmas toys I wanted. Now, each year my family and I take a trip to the Christmas tree farm. We pick out our favorite tree, make my nephew cut it down, then have it shook, bagged, and taken home!
How do you stay Active during the winter months? It is so easy for me to get into a winter rut and find myself working out less. I am not an outdoors runner, so I attend Barre classes and hot yoga to warm up! I highly recommend everyone participate in Black Friday shopping. It's a

What is your new year’s resolution? I can't remember a year where I actually set a New Year's resolution. Do resolutions exist after January? I believe that I achieve more when I set shorter, more realistic goals throughout the year. Such as, during the next three months I am going to set aside a certain amount of time to work on a project or spending this month dedicated to my studies.

of families around the OKC metro. There are a total of 8 events throughout the year that JLOC supports. At these events, child passenger safety technicians install car-seats that have been donated by JLOC and other various organizations, check the installation of already installed car-seats, and teach fami-
lies how to transport children correctly and safely. JLOC has donated 80 car-seats for the events. JLOC volunteers assist with paperwork, work with the car- seat safety techs in checking seats, hand out information and water in JLOC bags, and help ensure the event runs smoothly.
The events take place at the Infant Crisis Center on a Saturday every other month from 8:30 a.m. till noon. The families in need of a car-seat(s) start showing up to receive a number around 6:00 a.m. and usually all car-seats have been fulfilled by 7:45 a.m. It is first come first serve and all events continue to increase in the number of families that attend. At the first event in June there were around 60 car-seats that were donated and installed and at the event in November there were 100 car-seats donated and installed. Families continue to show up even after all the car-seats have been spoken for. At that time we inform them of the next event and recommend they get there early. The majority of families that attend either do not have their children in a car-seat or the car-seat is not installed correctly. It is very common that a family is there to receive car-seats for two or more children. The placement is helping ensure that more children are riding in vehicles safely and possibly saving their life; since motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death in children ages 1-19. As the events have continued to grow in attendance we definitely can see that the car-seat safety checks placement is getting the word out about child passenger safety and helping hundreds of families.

SUSTAINER POEM League Focus 2015 Sarah does Hot Yoga, Barre is Bethie’s plan; Annie goes the Bootcamp route just because she can.
You can soapbox all you want about the health mystique — Sound mind and firmer body — and what’s the best technique.
Shelley loves her Crossfit class, She goes there every day; She swears it gives her energy — when the dizziness goes away.
I have found my new addiction — and I’m glad to share with you. I’m trying Inner Healthy… and Outer Healthy too.
Kerry enjoys some Kickboxing, a new skill she recently acquired; Her technique is quite spasmodic but her drive must be admired.
Outside, I’m a mild-mannered Sustainer who gets what the focus is about; but Inside is Jillian Michaels Struggling to get out.
Katie does standup Paddleboarding, Pilates is Meg’s new attraction; Spinning class works for Susie — She prefers some interaction.
I’m getting myself all psyched up to work and sweat and play; Today I’m heading for yoga class. Oh Yes, it’s my very first day.

Staying Healthy Through the Holidays
s
BY VANESSA DAVIS
HEALTHY HOLIDAY RECIPE Created by Leah Jackson
taying healthy and active during the holidays can be a challenge between cool temperatures forcing activities indoors, holiday feasts, and parties every weekend. Eating healthy is often the last thing on people’s minds during the holiday season, but it shouldn’t be. Don’t wait until January to start eating healthy. You don’t have to give up your favorite holiday traditions either. Pick something you absolutely love and decide you will allow yourself that one indulgence. Do you love Christmas candy and cookies? Make your own. It is easier than you think and can cut down significantly on the amount of sugar and preservatives per serving than store bought items. You can also use healthy swaps when baking such as applesauce for oil and honey for white sugar too.
Attending a holiday potluck? Volunteer to bring a dish that fits with your healthy eating goals. If you are attending a holiday party and are unsure about the food situation, ask the host what is planned to be served. If the food provided doesn’t work for you, eat before you go. Don’t stay home because you are worried about breaking your diet. The best part of the holidays is spending time with friends and family. Go out and enjoy the festivities!

1. American Horror Story: Coven. I’m actually re-watching all of the previous seasons of American Horror Story because the new season is so good and I forgot how much I loved the others as well! 2. Game of Thrones: A Clash of Kings. I started reading the series prior to starting law school, and once I picked up the law books, I had to put GoT down. So now I’m immersing myself in the series once more. 3. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the cartoon version). I have always been obsessed with this classic. How can you not love the lyrics to “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch?”
1. What do you plan to enjoy this holiday season? I plan to enjoy all the activities & parties this Christmas season that I have participated in through the years (I had hip joint replacement surgery last summer and will have my other hip replaced after New Years). 2. I have just finished reading Lincoln by Lucy Foster Madison and also Rebel Without a Cause by Franklin Graham. I got motivated to read his book after attending his Good News Festival this summer. Next I plan to reread my father’s book that he wrote and published in 1944 about the history of the helicopter, Anything a Horse Can Do. He was the first military pilot and retired after 30 years in the Air Force as a Brigadier General. 3. I always enjoy seeing A Christmas Carol. It is one of my all time favorite holiday movies.
1. Mainly documentaries. 2. Humans of New York: Stories. 3. Love Actually.
