President’s Letter Dear Friends,
MISSION The Junior League of Oklahoma City, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
VISION The Junior League of Oklahoma City, Inc. will empower volunteers to impact our community and enrich lives.
FOCUS Women Building a Better Oklahoma City
As I look back on our year together, I am so impressed with all we did to lay the foundation for five years of Junior League of Oklahoma City’s focus on improving the health of our community. We forged new partnerships, we educated Oklahoma City about our commitment to wellness, and we launched new and varied projects. From helping children train for a 5k, to providing cooking classes to teens aging out of the Oklahoma Foster System, to teaching domestic violence survivors how to create a healthy and safe home for their children, JLOC volunteers strived to impact our community and enrich the lives of our fellow citizens. Additionally, we worked to enhance the membership experience for those who belong to our organization. Led by Alexis Lux, the Training and Leadership Development Committee worked to provide unique opportunities to learn with and from each other. Creating Junior Groups, affinity clubs for people with similar interests, was so popular that new groups are forming for the upcoming year! Also, thanks to the vision of a task force, our beloved Annual Member Luncheon transformed into Legacy and Legends. The Tiffany-themed event was a huge success because of the hard work and dedication of Co-Chairs Matilda Clements and Katherine Hager, and their committee. The 2014 Mistletoe Market had a banner year with budget-breaking records! The women of the Market Board, led by the fabulous Laura Steen, had an extraordinary vision for the event. The vendors, shoppers, and volunteers enjoyed the holiday-themed weekend, and I look forward to many more Markets to come! Thank you to the Community Advisory Board for its constant support. Whether the members donated to our Annual Campaign, hosted a training event in their home, or offered guidance for challenges and opportunities, it was a comfort to know that I had 24 professionals ready to help at a moment’s notice. Of course, the successes we enjoyed this year would not have been possible without the amazing women of the 2014-2015 Board of Directors. They worked tirelessly each and every day. It was a joy to serve with them, and I am honored to consider them friends. The Junior League is an organization of women, by women, and for women. Membership gives you the opportunity to try new things or challenge yourself to think differently. One of the core tenants of our mission is that we develop the potential of women. If you take advantage of all that membership offers, you will change yourself for the better. It’s up to you to absorb the training you receive here and use it to change your life, change Oklahoma City, change our world. I believe in you, and I am excited to see what you will achieve in the years ahead. Thank you for this extraordinary opportunity to serve as President. I shall treasure the memories I made this year for the rest of my days. Gratefully,
Kristi Leonard President 2014-2015
MEET YOUR EDITOR LEAH JACKSON Leah joined the Junior League of Oklahoma City as a provisional in 2010 and has been an Active member since 2011. She was born in Oklahoma City but moved away at the age of 2 to Southern California and then moved on to Houston, TX. She moved back to Oklahoma to attend The University of Oklahoma where she earned a

degree in Communication. Leah’s fondness for writing began in the fourth grade. Leah wrote a story about a man traveling through the jungle and his explorations. Her teacher was so impressed, that the story was submitted to a playwright professional. The playwright was likewise impressed, and Leah’s play was turned into a script and
performed by a professional play company at her school. Leah is married to Robert (Bob) Jackson, an attorney in Oklahoma City. They have 2 children, a daughter age 3 and a son age 1. Her hobbies include cooking and nutrition, spending time at the lake, and anything that involves cars. Leah is excited to serve as this year’s League Link Editor.

Family Fun Night
o
n May 21, 2015 JLOC partnered with the Oklahoma City County Health Department for a Family Fun Night. The main event was a cooking demonstration where families learned how to make a summer squash stir-fry. JLOC provided every family in attendance with the ingredients necessary to
make this healthy meal at home. There were also some kid events and a visit from News 9 Meteorologist, Justin Rudicel. This was a great evening of family fun and healthy activities.

Kids on Track Finishes on the Track BY KATHERINE CHANDLER
T
o finish out the year for Kids on Track, the Junior League of Oklahoma City held a track meet at the Boys and Girls Club. The kids each ran a mile as well as participating in a relay and a sprint. Some of the parents and staff joined the Junior League women as we spread out around the track to cheer on the participants. Each participant received a medal and goodie
bag. Watching the kids reach their goal of running a mile really brought home the feeling of a successful year. Some were amazed that they could run a mile. Each week we strived to encourage the kids to exercise, run a little farther than the week before, and eat healthy snacks, in addition to sharing other health tips to help them make better decisions. However, some of the kids that participated in the program said it best:
“It was very very fun because you get to eat and run and I love that.” MELVIN, 8
“It was fun meeting and running with the nice ladies.” CORNELIUS, 9
“It makes me exercise and we get to run with our friends.” BRADY, 9

2014-2015 Provisional Class Receives Active Status BY KELLI HAYWARD WALSH
T
he 2014-2015 Provisional Class truly helped make the Junior League of Oklahoma City "A League of our Own"! I had the pleasure of leading nine incredible PAT advisors (Adrienne Nobles, Natalie Fix, Whitney Porch-Van Heuvelen, Becky Taylor, Jennifer Fritsch, Adele Shadid, Leigh Scully, Caroline Turan and Heather Ward Read) with the help from the most amazing PAT Vice Chair, Amy McDougall and the most outstanding sustaining advisor, Ann Trudgeon. The League trained 89 incredible young women utilizing various courses on topics related to our League and community as well as a handful of trainings managed by the TLDC committee. We also showed each of them what a community placement really looks like, by hosting three separate Kids in the Kitchen events at Positive Tomorrows, Boys & Girls Club and Sunbeam Family Services. Through those three projects the ladies were able to make an impact in the lives of over 500 at-risk youth. We also had a bus tour where the women were able to visit both

Youth Services of Oklahoma County and Infant Crisis Services. Seeing these two agencies that the League has made a difference in over the years was an eyeopening experience for our provisionals. Beyond these accomplishments, the ladies also served on a provisional committee and a League committee.
To say they are rock-stars is an understatement. I'm so proud I was able to join each of them on this journey and I cannot wait to watch each and every one of them continue to make a difference in our community and serve the League as the incredible leaders I know they are. Congratulations Class of 2015!

Welcome 2015-2016 Board of Directors
Nazette Zuhdi- Cleaver President
Why did you join JLOC? I joined JLOC to empower and improve the community, and to make a difference in other people’s lives as well as my own. I am thankful for my life, the blessings and privileges I have and the opportunities afforded to me. I never lose sight of that. I want to give back to the community and learn to be the best version of myself that I can be.
friends had moved after graduation or gotten married and I missed that community of women I'd always been surrounded by. I had just switched jobs when my new boss mentioned that she thought it'd be a great fit for me. I'm so glad I joined because all of my very best friends I've met through our organization and our paths probably wouldn't have crossed otherwise in our wide range of professions.

Favorite Oklahoma City memory? As a lifelong basketball fan, I was thrilled to pieces to host the New Orleans Hornets. Gaining the Thunder has added so much joie de vivre to OKC. I have also treasured seeing Oklahoma City Ballet transform into a thriving dance company. It is such a treat to see these incredible artist/ athletes perform.

What is something people don't know about JLOC? One thing I think a lot of people don't know is how many service projects we have begun in the city and then turned over to the community partner. Our impact on OKC is really amazing when you look at every project JLOC has been a part of!
Sheena Karami Community VP
What is something people wouldn't guess about you? In my spare time I enjoy moonlighting as a professional singer... and by "professional" I mean "karaoke." I have no doubt a Grammy is in my future!
Tracey Frederick Membership VP
How has JLOC helped you personally? I was relocated from Texas for work almost 6 years ago. Moving to a new town and not knowing anyone was intimidating. Transferring my membership to JLOC was the best decision I made. I have met my best friends through the Junior League, and have had the opportunity to get to know so many wonderful things about this city.
Erica Lape Finance VP
What is something people wouldn't guess about you? My favorite type of music is gangster rap, old or new, I love it all.
Adrienne Nobles Nominating Chair
How has JLOC helped you professionally? Professionally, JLOC has enhanced my leadership skills and helped me grow my network throughout the OKC metro.
Jamie Herrera Fundraising VP
Jenifer Randle Communications VP
What is something people don't know about you? I dumped a couple of pounds (yes, pounds) of pudding on the ground once. Let me tell you... that much pudding isn't so easy to clean up.
Jamie recently got married and is off enjoying her honeymoon with her new husband. Congratulations Jamie!
Katie James Sustaining Advisor
How has JLOC helped you personally? Since serving as JLOC president, I served on numerous non-profits board in the OKC area and now have a wide range of friends who work in so many different areas in our community.

She worked with membership council to rewrite the criteria necessary to sponsor a prospective provisional, so that the changing dynamics of our league could best recruit new members. JLOC 2015-2016 Project Updates
t
he 2014-2015 READ Committee developed exciting new projects to round out a full range of projects dedicated to improving the health and wellness of our community. Our new projects for 2015-2016 are as follows:
New Projects Guest Chefs at Ronald McDonald House: Volunteers prepare and serve
a healthy, nourishing dinner for 40 guests of the Ronald McDonald House, who are family members of seriously ill children receiving medical treatment
in the Oklahoma City area. Guest Chefs help these families by providing a healthy dinner to nurture them and relieve them of the burden of cooking during a time when they are often feeling overwhelmed with making decisions about their child’s treatment. JLOC volunteers will plan and shop for the dinners and then cook the meals on site at the Ronald McDonald House.
Healthy Pets, Healthy Homes:
Volunteers will assist the Pet Food Pantry by working with local pet-centric businesses to set up collection centers for an ongoing pet food drive. Volunteers will collect the donated food, and assist with sorting and distributing the food to residents in need. Members will also work closely with the Pet Food Pantry to assemble “Pet Disaster Kits” that will assist Oklahomans who have been victims of a natural disaster such as a tornado or fire.
Safe Kids Car Seat Safety Checks:
JLOC members will participate in car seat check-ups for hundreds of families around the OKC metro. Safe Kids Oklahoma is the leading organization in our state working to reduce the number one killer of children– preventable injuries! Together, it’s an important opportunity to educate community members about proper car seat installation and vehicular safety.
Single Parent Support Groups:
JLOC volunteers will relate healthfocused activities for the Single Parent Support Network clients. Classes may include physical and mental health exercises, nutritional cooking and budgeting for healthy

volunteers will assist Safe Kids Coalition in teaching school age children practical water safety skills in a safe environment.
Wellness for Life: Volunteers will work with and educate seniors living at Concordia on making healthy food and
exercise choices. Concordia hosts one indoor and one outdoor garden, where JLOC volunteers and participants will engage in gardening and planting vegetables, plants, and herbs to make healthy meals/snacks in accordance with in-season items from the garden. Concordia also offers a large, state-ofthe-art fitness facility where Junior Leaguers will conduct group exercise activities. JLOC volunteers will also plan a “planting party” where seniors invite friends and family to sow the seed of a healthy lifestyle!
Changes to Existing Projects Healthy Literacy became Elementary Health and the project is planning to expand its efforts to include another elementary school. This will provide the opportunity to impact more kids with critical information about eating well and being active. Summer Food and Fun became Food and Fun
at Family Junction. The project has expanded from being only a summer placement to include a fall and spring concentration as well. The teens living at the Family Junction shelter with Youth Services for Oklahoma County will have a great time, year-round, learning how to shop for and prepare healthy meals.
Closed Projects PACE concluded several projects this year to completely transition our community project focus to health and wellness. The closed projects included Amachi with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Adult Literacy at the Community Outreach Center with OCCC, Whiz Kids, Bringing Books to Life at the Myriad Gardens, Variety Care Health and Nutrition, and Teacher’s Warehouse, a Variety Pack project. Every concluded project received funds to launch this project back to the community. We are very proud of the impact our volunteers had on the people served through each of these wonderful projects.

Say Yes to Opportunities in Front of You NAZETTE ZUHDI-CLEAVER, PRESIDENT, JUNIOR LEAGUE OF OKLAHOMA CITY
W
elcome to the 2015-2016 JLOC year! I hope all of you are enjoying your summers and spending time with your families and friends. I know some of you are already busy with summer projects and making a difference in the community. Some of you have already been meeting and planning for big events like Mistletoe Market, Speaker in the City and the Annual Campaign. If you are like me, I spend part of my summer deciding what I want to accomplish in the coming months. Since we are about halfway through the summer, I encourage you to think about how you want to spend the upcoming JLOC year. And with planning in mind, I want to let you know JLOC’s schedule for general meetings for the 2015-2016 year. All meetings will be held at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, Social Hour at 6:00pm and Meeting at 7:00pm. The schedule is as follows: Wednesday, September 9, 2015 Tuesday, October 13, 2015
Tuesday, January 12, 2016 Tuesday, February 9, 2016 Tuesday, April 12, 2016 Tuesday, May 10, 2016 There will also be an open house in December 2015, location, date and time to be announced. Now, with the start of a new JLOC year, I hope each and every Provisional, Active and Sustainer will open their minds, step outside of any restrictive comfort zones and say “yes” to what’s in front of you. I love the quote by Richard Branson, “If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you’re not sure if you can do it, say yes, then learn how to do it later.” Simply by being a member of JLOC, you will have opportunities presented to you all the time. Those opportunities can come in the form of a community placement leadership role, appointment, trainings, and the list goes on. By saying “yes,” you will quickly experience the benefits of honest service, feeling good about yourself and about helping others.
Also, by putting yourself out there and expanding your limits, you will position yourself to receive more opportunities that you may have never thought about before. Each opportunity breeds other opportunities. You will never know what is out there waiting for you unless you say “yes” to what is presented to you. With Heartfelt Gratitude,

JLOC Reinstatement Campaign
t
By Tracey Frederick
he Junior League of Oklahoma City is focused on growing our membership base. Sometimes life gets in the way, and members have had to resign. We want to make sure that members who have resigned in good standing, understand that they are welcome to rejoin the Junior League of Oklahoma City. Do you have a friend that you worked a Mistletoe Market shift with, or someone you sorted clothes with at the Remarkable Shop that you haven’t seen in a while? Reach out to your friends, neighbors, Provisional classmates that have left the league, and encourage them to rejoin. From June 1st until August 31st we are waiving the $50 reinstatement fee to all former members that reinstate their membership. Sustainer dues will only be $83 and Active dues will be $123. With our new health focus, Speaker in the City fundraising event, and Junior Groups, we have so much to offer women in our community. Invite your friends to reinstate and win prizes! When someone reinstates and lists the member who invited them back, that member will be entered to win a prize at the September General Membership meeting.
