Women Building a Better Oklahoma City

President’s Letter GREETINGS TEAM JLOC!

Nazette Zuhdi-Cleaver

MISSION The Junior League of Oklahoma City, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

VISION The Junior League of Oklahoma City, Inc. will empower volunteers to impact our community and enrich lives.

FOCUS Women Building a Better Oklahoma City

So here we are, 88 years into serving Oklahoma City, and the Junior League of Oklahoma City continues to be relevant, a blessing to the community and, for those of us involved, a lot of fun. In fact, if I were to pick out a modern theme song for us, it might be the one from the LEGO movie: “Everything is awesome. Everything is cool when you’re part of a team.” I thought this was a great fit because I’ve been reflecting on this incredible group we have -- from Provisionals to Actives to Sustainers -- and thinking about us as “Team JLOC.” After all, a team only succeeds when each member plays her part. And within this group, we do. Consider this: from June 1 through the last week of August, we’ve already put in 284 hours of service, helping 871 children and 194 adults. And already we have five of our projects underway. As a couple examples: in our Pet Food Pantry project, we have an engaged group ready to take that project to the next level. They’re already working on ways to raise more awareness and get more vets involved. In the Wellness for Life project at Concordia Life Care Community, one of the favorite quotes from the night was when one of the senior citizens said “When I looked at you girls I didn’t know if I would like you - but you know what I think I am going to really like this.’” And to think, we’ve done all this when many of us are still just figuring out our way in JLOC! In my eyes, this is what happens when you focus on developing women into leaders. It leads to real transformation not only inside us as individuals, but in the community as well. And because of that, I couldn’t be more thrilled to point out that we have over 125 women in the Provisional class this year. It is being led by the talented Amy McDougall, PAT Chair. This group has participated in a teambuilding course and started their Provisional training courses. All this said, I believe an early congratulations is owed to Team JLOC. We have already accomplished so much and the summer just ended. But, we’re like any team early in a season: we have a long way to go and plenty more to do! Of course that includes our annual Mistletoe Market, to be held November 11-14, 2015 at Cox Convention Center in Downtown, OKC. We have over 115 merchants already committed to attending the event! Kelly Brown, Mistletoe Market Chair 2015, and the amazing Mistletoe Market Board, have been working tirelessly to make this event a huge success. They have many unique additions to this year’s event, like the VIP ticket for the Preview Party. This year also includes our newest fundraiser, Speaker in the City, being led by Alexis Lux, Chair, and her dedicated Speaker in the City Board. In my eyes, this is not just a chance for us to earn a great deal towards our charitable goals, but also to make a huge impact on our city as a whole. Be sure to mark January 31, 2016 on your calendars so you don’t miss it. I also continue to see each project and each gathering of the Team as another chance to lead not just from our minds or our sense of obligation, but from our hearts. The chance to know firsthand how good it feels to take care of others. This is a blessing I hope we all get to experience in the coming year. I am also so honored to be working with the 2015-2016 Board of Directors. These women are so gifted, committed and creative. I am thrilled to be on this journey with them. On a couple final but useful business notes, we have rebranded our Monday email. It’s now called “JLOC & ME.” So keep a lookout for that in your inbox. I would also like to extend a big thank you to our dedicated staff, Lynsi Franklin and Helen Jones, for all their hard work and commitment to JLOC. Finally and importantly, I simply want to thank all of you for your efforts, for your friendship, for your contributions to the Team, and for this opportunity to serve as President for the exciting year to come. With heartfelt gratitude,

Nazette Zuhdi-Cleaver, President 2015-2016

magine walking into a room of over one hundred women, mostly strangers with maybe a familiar face or two, and the energetic buzz of nervous and excited voices filling the air. Sounds intimidating right? Luckily, the 127 women of the JLOC 2015-2016 Provisional class were welcomed into a similar situation with brightly colored balloons and the friendly smiles of this year’s fantastic PAT Advisors at the JLOC headquarters in late April. It was clear the budding of new friendships and networking had begun. In June, the Provisionals participated in a team building course at the Boys and Girls Club of Oklahoma City, presented by counselors from OKC’s Shiloh Summer Camp. The women partook in a series of guided activities, games and bonding exercises, designed to teach and encourage working together to achieve group

success. The course not only provided an opportunity to reflect on the importance of teamwork, but also fostered new connections and lots of laughter among the women. “The Shiloh course provided a fun, relaxed atmosphere for the Provisionals to learn more about themselves and their classmates,” says Heather Read, PAT Vice Chair. “It was great to watch their interactions, see them grow, and make new friendships. I am excited for their continued development within JLOC, through the courses and trainings we have planned for them this year.” To close out the summer, the Provisional Social Committee has planned a “Provisionals in Paradise” tropical evening soiree at the Allied Arts Rooftop patio on August 27th. Palm trees, drink umbrellas and hula skirts will be highly encouraged! This fall, the Provisionals have several trainings to look forward to, ranging from

technology to meeting facilitation, and they will delve deeper into the history and structure of the JLOC. Additionally, the Provisionals will participate in building gardens at local schools in conjunction with OKC Harvest, a non-profit, educational organization that plans, builds and grows community gardens. The gardens will then be used by the schools to teach children how to grow healthy, nutritious and sustainable fruits and vegetables in their very own communities. This year’s Provisionals are led by Amy McDougall, PAT Chair; Heather Read, PAT Vice Chair; Ann Trudgeon, PAT Sustaining Advisor; and PAT Advisors Kate Ward, Rebekah Wheeler, Audra Bromagem, Ashley Campbell, Amanda Essaili, Lauren Johnson, Caroline “Cari” Joyce, Annie Sartin, Samara Terrill, and Kate Ward.

TLDC Committee hosts yoga training at Soul Yoga By Victoria Hui On Saturday July 18, the TLDC Committee hosted a yoga training at Soul Yoga. Led by Allison Candelaria, owner of Soul Yoga, the class centered around vinyasa flow yoga, a type of yoga focusing on movement in connection with the breath. All skill levels, even those brand new to yoga, were a part of the training. Fundamental yoga poses such as tadasana, downward-facing dog, child’s pose, and chair pose were explored. Allison showed the women of JLOC how to properly align

6 SEPTEMBER 2015

their bodies to practice yoga safely and effectively. More challenging and invigorating poses were demonstrated and Allison gave participants the knowledge to advance their yoga practice in the future. It was a great class that strengthened and enlivened all participants! Soul Yoga offers a variety of classes for all skill levels throughout the day, seven days a week. They are located at 8028 North May Avenue, Suite 110 in Oklahoma City.

unior League of Oklahoma City Board Member Adrienne Nobles was named the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Woman of the Year. During a 10-week campaign, Adrienne and her team, which included several members of JLOC, raised over $37,000 for blood cancer research and treatment. The fundraising team developed several very successful events including the first-ever OKC Puppy Prom, a Poker and Pearls night with the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, and a Kendra Scott shopping event. Adrienne is incredibly thankful for the team effort that contributed to making a tremendous

difference. She encourages all of us to take risks and challenge ourselves. The ATeam for LLS was honored for their achievements on June 12th at the Grand Finale held at the Skirvin hotel. Adrienne is the assistant Vice-President for the University of Central Oklahoma’s University Public Relations. In addition to her efforts raising funds for LLS, she is currently serving JLOC on the Board of Directors as Nominating Chair for 2015-2016. We are so proud of you, congratulations Adrienne!

What is something people wouldn't guess about you? Most people would not guess that while in college I was a competitive boxer and that I have been knocked out cold!

Why did you join JLOC? I joined JLOC because I wanted to make a difference in the community. I have always been an active, involved, leader and volunteer. After I graduated from law school, I wanted to continue to empower other people's lives by being a volunteer in the community. I felt the JLOC would provide me with the best opportunity to do this.Â

What is something people wouldn't guess about you? I'm always up for trying something new!

Ashley Campbell Why did you join JLOC? I joined JLOC to meet new people and to become more involved in the community in which I live. What kept me active is the realization that there are few things in life more inspiring or more powerful than a group of women accomplishing the same goal of community enrichment.

Lauren Johnson What is something people don't know about JLOC? You’ll make some of your best and lifelong friends in Junior League.

Heather Read What is something people wouldn't guess about you? I was in my high school's marching band and not just in it, I was super involved! I was the feature baton twirler and even served as the drum major my senior year. I try to refrain from wearing sparkly swim suits in public as an adult!

the League, she easily convinced me to join. It wasn't always easy- there were days I had to force myself to go to events but I am so glad I did. All of my friends are part of JLOC and it makes volunteering that much more fun when it's with my closest friends.

Sustainer Events Co-Chairs Ann Cameron and Janet Daugherty are planning to have the first Sustainer event of the 2015-2016 JLOC year on September 23rd. It will be a Welcoming Reception for new Sustainers, at which, the current Sustainers can meet and greet the new Sustainers. The time and location are still to be determined for this event but save the date. A post card will be mailed in September with information about the event, as well as a calendar for the upcoming year. Watch your mailbox for additional details.

Rebekah Wheeler How has JLOC helped you personally? Joining the Junior League has been one of the best decisions I’ve made as an adult. After graduating from college, I moved to Oklahoma City and had very few friends. My Provisional class was filled with outgoing and accomplished women who were full of life – the exact kind of women I want to be surrounded by. I’ve also made so many friends and gotten to know the community through my placements. It’s so encouraging knowing there are like-minded women in Oklahoma City that share my passion for service.

GIRLS ON THE BLOCK Melissa Megginson PROVISIONAL What are your healthy football snack ideas? Well, the problem I run into with healthy snacks is that I really love cheese. And, although I am no beer sommelier, I have the strong conviction that nothing brings out the delicate nuances of a fine craft brew (or Bud Light) like a healthy dose of cheese with a side of football. Because I work for a company that focuses on Pinterest marketing, I'm lucky enough to be surrounded by pins that speak directly to my love of cheese and snack foods all day, every day. One of my favorite

healthy-snacky-football-readybut-still-cheesy recipes that I've discovered on the job is "Healthy Grilled Sweet Potato Nachos" from Pinch Of Yum. Pair those nachos with your favorite team and light beer and you're ready for healthy(-ier) football season.

What is your favorite fall fitness routine or outdoor activity? I've been a semi-avid rock climber for about a year. There is very little that feels as good as hauling yourself 90 feet into the air, and looking down at what you've

accomplished. Not only is rock climbing one of the best physical exercises you can do, it's also a pretty incredible mental workout. You have to plan your route up, trust that your body can - and will - support you, and trust that the person belaying you isn't going to let you fall to your death. We're lucky enough to live close to Rocktown, one of the best climbing facilities in the country with amazing views of the city. If anyone is interested in getting started, let me know!

What do you most look forward to in the fall? Outside time! Oklahoma does fall incredibly well. It's the mild temperatures we enjoy in spring without the constant threat

of severe weather. Fall is the perfect time to go on bike rides, play a few yard games, hike in the Wichita Mountains, and (of course) go rock climbing. Not to mention, sweaters are the clothing equivalent of eating a big bowl of mac & cheese. Pure, unapologetic comfort.

Belinda Tricinella ACTIVE What are your healthy football snack ideas? Fruit kabobs or veggie trays.

What is your favorite fall fitness routine or outdoor activity?

What do you most look forward to in the fall? OU football...BOOMER SOONER!

Taking walks outside or a run around Lake Hefner.

Marion Paden SUSTAINER What are your healthy football snack ideas? One of the great things about football is that it is in the fall and usually happens on a weekend so, there is a built in reason to splurge and that is what I do when I indulge in queso dip and chips – the kind made with Rotel, cheese and sausage.

12 SEPTEMBER 2015

What is your favorite fall fitness routine or outdoor activity? My favorite outdoor fall fitness activity is golf – because it is just too hot during the summer. Unfortunately, I don’t do it often enough and I’m not any good at it. My every day, year round, favorite outdoor activity is walking my dog Michael.

What do you most look forward to in the fall? Since kindergarten, all through high school and college, and as a college employee, I have always liked the first day of school. This year will be different since I recently changed jobs and no longer will mark the beginning of the fall semester. This year, I’m looking forward to the start of Leadership Oklahoma Class XXIX. I am inspired by the 51 members that have been selected for the class and the curriculum that has been prepared for the year long program. I feel so

fortunate that, as the President and CEO of LOK, I get to share the experience.

Food and Fun at the Family Junction

f

By Cortney Smith

ood and Fun at Family Junction is a year round placement that pairs JLOC volunteers with youth currently living at the shelter. “The Junction” provides a safe home for children between the ages of 12 and 17 who need temporary care while in a crisis or transition in living situations. It started out as a 30 day facility but has evolved into a long term “home” where kids receive valuable life skills, counseling, and stability. Our goal as volunteers is to expand upon the facilities’ mission and have fun with the kids! We teach cooking fundamentals, etiquette, and nutrition. At most sessions, we prepare

14 SEPTEMBER 2015

a healthy meal alongside the kids and conduct some sort of wellness activity. Everything from teaching them how to shop for groceries, chop an onion, crack an egg, perfect a downward dog… this week we will be preparing a spaghetti dinner, separating into teams and dueling it out in a “Family Junction Trivia Night!” At the beginning of our summer session, there were three sisters who had been living at the home for over a year. As I was walking in, one of the sisters saw me and excitedly spread the word that, “The Junior League

girls are here!” I volunteered with this project last summer, the sisters recognized me and a few more of us and were looking forward to spending the summer hanging out and cooking with the Junior League girls. I’m happy to say the three sisters finally got adopted and are no longer around to play with us. Some of the kids are there for a long time, some for just a week or two. Regardless of their length of stay, the Family Junction is a great place for kids to learn valuable life and nutrition lessons.

Legacy & Legends Luncheon, Save the Date & Nominate a Deserving Sustainer!

T

he 2016 Legacy & Legends luncheon has been set for April 13, 2016 at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. Our history began in the heart of Mary Baker Rumsey who was a founder and the first President of the Junior League of Oklahoma City. She believed that volunteers have a positive impact on their community and epitomized this belief through a lifetime of service. As a League, we take pride in training our members, so that when they become Sustainers they

continue to give a lifetime of service just like Mary Baker Rumsey, and so many other Sustainers that followed her. With this value in sight, each year the Junior League honors two Sustaining members for their achievements in volunteer service to the community. The award recipients will be notified in January of 2016 by the selection committee and will be honored at the Legacy & Legends luncheon. The luncheon is also our time to recognize our Active members who have been honored through the year as

Both forms are available on pages 18 & 19!

ABC and Star recipients. Having Provisional, Sustaining and Active members in one room, honoring all we do together to make our community a better place, is awe-inspiring. To find out more about nominating a Sustainer for either the Mary Baker Rumsey award or the Sustainer of the Year award, visit www.jloc. org. Ticket information will be available in the coming weeks as well. You won’t want to miss this year’s luncheon, so be sure to purchase your tickets when they become available!

Spotlight on a Sustainer Sarah Malloy By Jen Randle

W

ith the Mistletoe Market turning 20 this year, I met with Sustainer Sarah Malloy, the first Mistletoe Market Chair this month. We had a lovely discussion about the Mistletoe Market and how the Market has changed, as well as what JLOC was like during Sarah’s years as an Active member. Sarah became a Provisional of the JLOC in 1983. She quickly got on the Leadership Track becoming part of the Fundraising Council and also served on the JLOC Board of Directors. Sarah and her Board began their work after attending the Junior League of Midland’s holiday shopping weekend. Midland had developed a manual for putting together the weekend and JLOC purchased one to help along the way. Our first Mistletoe Market was held in the International Building at the State Fairgrounds of Oklahoma with 50 vendors. The theme was “Lasso the Moon!” and it produced a net of $60,000 for JLOC. The more things change, the more they stay the same. As Sarah and I talked, I soon discovered that many things our Mistletoe Market has today began so long ago. I had no idea our exciting and

fun Preview Party has been happening since our first year. The very first year, the Preview Party featured David Yurman, jeweler, and entertainment was provided. They held special events throughout the first Mistletoe Market as well, such as Thursday morning preferential shopping, Friday luncheon and style show, and a children’s event on Saturday morning. As we spoke, it dawned on me this was way before the internet and the JLOC website were even around. I personally am a self-proclaimed techno-geek and I had a difficult time imagining the work these ladies did in contacting all the vendors without our current technology. Sarah also mentioned a Mistletoe Market tradition that was started by her Board the first year. It was the tradition of a Mistletoe Market charm bracelet. Each year, a charm was to be added to the bracelet and then the bracelet was to be passed on to the next Chair of the Mistletoe Market. Unfortunately, as years pass by, the location of this bracelet is unknown. Have you seen this bracelet? Is it possibly sitting in your jewelry box, waiting for the next chair? We’d love to locate this piece of

Sarah Malloy and her husband Paul

JLOC history (as well as continue the tradition). If you have the bracelet, please email our Office Manager, Lynsi Franklin at lynsifranklin@jloc.org.

As JLOC has fully transitioned into our new focus of health, we have added some great new placements that engage the our community to help them to focus on a “healthy you.” One of our newest placements gives volunteers an opportunity to serve the four-legged members of our community by spending their Saturday mornings at the Pet Food Pantry in Oklahoma City. During their volunteer shifts, there are several different tasks to perform, ranging from sorting large bags of dog food to filling smaller bags for distribution. The Pet Food Pantry of Oklahoma City provides low-income senior

citizens, veterans & the homeless with supplemental pet food on a monthly basis. Most of these people are sharing their food with their pets. The mission of The Pet Food Pantry is to provide food for these pets while helping keep food on the table for their owners. With the assistance from members of JLOC, the Pet Food Pantry is able to deliver over 6,000 pounds of pet food to people who otherwise would be choosing to feed their pets over themselves.

20 SEPTEMBER 2015

Did you know that last year the Annual Campaign raised over $50,000? Each dollar of that was directly given back to organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, YWCA, Educare, and the Children’s Hospital, through projects that our Junior League members worked so hard to make successful.

This year, more than ever, our Annual Campaign needs your participation. As we launch our new Health initiative and embark on our new and exciting community projects, it is up to our Junior League members to help us complete our most successful year yet! The
