On behalf of West Chester University, I am pleased to welcome you to our 2015-16 season of cultural and community programming. The University has enjoyed strong visual and performing arts programs since its earliest days and it has built on that storied tradition to become a regional leader in cultural programming. Here at West Chester University, you can find the very best in music, theater, dance, and art, rivaling anything you might find in New York, Philadelphia, or Washington. Our reputation speaks for itself. Last year, more than 85,000 people attended a variety of WCU cultural events, including a Japanese drumming and dance show, salsa orchestra performance, evening of Motown and soul music, family puppet show, lectures, art exhibits, and much more. I am happy to once again present the President’s Speaker Series, which brings extraordinary public figures to WCU. Last year, the series featured Olympic champion Jackie Joyner-Kersee and television anchor and journalist Jane Pauley. This year, we look forward to welcoming, on November 6, journalist Dan Rather, who is currently anchor of the television news magazine “Dan Rather Reports.” On March 11, husband and wife political consultants James Carville and Mary Matalin will join us for a discussion of the 2016 presidential elections and other political topics. I appreciate the enthusiastic support that our neighbors throughout the region show for West Chester University’s cultural programs and the students, faculty, staff, and visiting artists who present them. Such support and our thriving regional arts collaborations — which include partnerships with the Kennett Symphony, Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and Brandywine Ballet — are essential to our success. We also have formed partnerships around the country and around the globe, with WCU faculty, staff, and students bringing their talents to Norway, Poland, Austria, Great Britain, and other locales. In a recent achievement, the Golden Rams Marching Band was chosen from 170 competitors to appear as one of 10 marching bands in the 2015 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The “Incomparable” Golden Rams will be seen by more than 50 million people via televised broadcasts as well as by 3.5 million people along the parade route. Our 2015-16 season of cultural and community events promises to be outstanding, with attractions for every member of the family. I invite you to experience the arts at WCU! Sincerely,
This publication provided courtesy of the Department of Cultural and Community Affairs. 2

DAN RATHER
An Evening with Dan Rather Nov 6, 2015 | 8:00 PM
Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall Philips Memorial Building
Reserved Seating: Orchestra $25 | Balcony $20
For more than forty years, former CBS News anchor and “60 Minutes” correspondent Dan Rather has been the embodiment of the intrepid broadcast journalist. From the Kennedy assassination — where he was the first to break the news that the president had been killed — to the Indian Ocean tsunami, he has covered every major story of our time with distinction and a fierce dedication to hard news. For his unparalleled devotion to his craft, he was named the 2012 recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award for Lifetime Achievement. A native son of Texas, Dan Rather is well-known for his colorful speaking style and the home-spun “Ratherisms” that he has used with the greatest exuberance in his election coverage. During the wee hours of the 2000 election night marathon, Rather commented that “We don’t know whether to wind the watch or howl at the moon,” after noting earlier that “[Vice President Al] Gore’s got his back to the wall with his shirttails on fire in Florida.” Rather is also a prolific author, having written, co-written, or contributed to several books. Rather’s latest journalistic venture is the hard-edged news show “Dan Rather Reports,” broadcast on AXS TV, on which he acts as both host and managing editor. As a speaker, few can match the authority, experience, and perspective Rather offers on world events and the passion he displays in defense of journalism.

JAMES CARVILLE & MARY MATALIN
All’s Fair: Love, War, and Politics Mar 11, 2016 | 8:00 PM Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall Philips Memorial Building
Reserved Seating: Orchestra $25 | Balcony $20
James “The Ragin’ Cajun” Carville is America’s best-known political consultant. His long list of electoral successes evidences a knack for steering overlooked campaigns to unexpected landslide victories and for re-making political underdogs into upset winners. Carville is a Fox News contributor and can also be seen on other networks worldwide. He is a columnist for The Hill newspaper, which publishes daily when Congress is in session, and serves as a Professor of Practice at Tulane University in New Orleans, where he lives with his wife Mary Matalin and their two daughters. Mary Matalin is one of the most celebrated and popular conservative voices in America. Among her many roles and accomplishments, she has served under President Ronald Reagan, made her mark as George H. W. Bush’s campaign director and most recently as assistant to President George W. Bush, and as assistant and counselor to Vice President Dick Cheney, making her the first White House official to hold that double title. Today, Matalin co-hosts the nationally-syndicated radio program “Both Sides Now,” which is currently broadcast on more than 100 radio stations across the country. In their second joint memoir, Love and War: Twenty Years, Three Presidents, Two Daughters and One Louisiana Home ( January 2014), Carville and Matalin take a look at how they — and America — have changed in the last two decades. In their two distinct voices, they pick up their story from the end of the 1992 Presidential campaign to their new life in New Orleans today where their efforts to rebuild and promote that city have become a central part of their lives — and a poignant metaphor for moving the nation forward.

Malicious maladies. Uncivilized family relations. Toppled Victorian values. Considered appallingly indecent when it premiered in 1882, Ghosts is given new life in West Chester University’s production. Ghosts is the story of the widow Helene Alving, who is haunted by the mistresses of her late husband and by her ailing son. Shocking in its day for its blunt discussion of venereal disease and marital infidelity, Ghosts remains to this day an intense psychological drama. J. Peter Adler Studio Theatre E. O. Sponsored by the College of Health Sciences and the College of Visual and Performing Arts DR. RICHARD KOGAN
“MUSIC, MOOD SWINGS & MADNESS” THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2015 | 7:30 P.M.
Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall Philips Memorial Building
Dr. Richard Kogan’s presentations are extraordinary, one-of-a-kind performances. He tells vivid stories about famous composers who suffered mental problems — a common misfortune among highly creative people — while illustrating those composers’ works by exquisitely playing excerpts from their compositions. Dr. Kogan will open your ears and eyes to the symphony that is humanity, music, and medicine.
Dr. Kogan has a distinguished career as both a concert pianist and as a psychiatrist. A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music PreCollege, Harvard College, and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Kogan has gained renown for his lectures and recitals that explore the role of music in healing and the influence of psychological factors on the creative output of composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, George Gershwin, and Leonard Bernstein.

The Silk Road: A Journey from China to Turkey
Marlin Darrah Marlin Darrah, the world’s most traveled film maker, brings this exploration of the famous 4000 mile trade route that winds through deserts, mountains, and plains linking Europe to China. It follows Marco Polo’s journey in 1271 that opened European trade with China for silks, teas, and porcelains and India for spices, ivory, and textiles. Darrah’s exceptional camera work takes us through five countries and two dozen cities that bridge the Far East with Europe. You will see colorful and unforgettable examples of great medieval Islamic art and architecture and fascinating old market streets overflowing with Oriental carpets, spices, and exotic wares. And you’ll meet the hospitable people all along the Silk Road. OCTOBER 26, 27
Ghost Towns of the Wild West Gray Warriner Gold fever ignited one of the greatest mass migrations in the world and left behind many ghost towns. Extraordinary filmmaker Gray Warriner brings us to real ghost towns — and to those barely hanging on to life, such as Elkhorn, Montana. This is the real Wild West, where some of the stories are even wilder than the fictional accounts that they inspired. And Gray Warriner tells those stories very, very well, with some of the best photography you’ll ever see.

China Rising
Dale Johnson In 2013 more autos were sold in China than in the U.S.! This complex nation with a long history has a true place within the global community, second only to the U.S. in the number of millionaires. Dale Johnson captures China’s rapid economic growth with photographic excellence and also takes us to sites of antiquity that remind us of the continuing importance of history and tradition. You’ll find this program captivating!

America’s Southeast Coast
South America and Central America
John Holod Come travel with John Holod in his RV to see special scenic wonders of the U.S. Southeast coast. From the Florida Keys northward, we’ll be enchanted by scenes of a pelican rookery, wild mustangs, dolphins, manatees, and giant loggerhead turtles. We’ll be on a shrimp boat for a while, and even scuba dive with sharks! We’ll have some historic moments learning about plantations and slaves, kayak through mangrove swamps, and try our hand at hanggliding. What a fine, sunny, break in our February winter!
Marlin Darrah The amazing Marlin Darrah shares his sampler of six Central and South American countries — natural wonders, architectural treasures, and cultural and artistic highlights. We’ll savor colonial cities in Nicaragua and Chile, saunter through markets in Costa Rica and over cobblestone streets in Peru’s Cuzco, find special wildlife in Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, and cruise the Panama Canal. Come and marvel!

Not a Day Goes By: Remembering Hells Canyon Patricia Keith In 1942 Hells Canyon, part of the treacherous river that borders Washington, Idaho, and Oregon, was America’s most dangerous mail route. Two cinematographers braved the raging rapids and craggy basalts of our country’s deepest gorge to document the mail delivery trip and capture a glimpse into the lives of homesteaders and ranchers there. Modern filmmaker Patricia Keith weaves her own Canyon travels with vintage footage by those early cinematographers and brings us a program you’ll long remember. 25 25
