revolutionary, critically-acclaimed musical Hamilton, On behalf of West Chester University, I am very pleased to welcome you to our 2021-22 season of cultural and community programming. As you know, our theaters and studios were dark last year, though in some cases the show did go on via livestream, as circumstances allowed. This year, as we re-open our campus to both our students and to the larger community, we have protocols in place to protect us all. Please review the mask policy at the end of this message.

Each parking lot in the WCU campus is designated for specific permit parking. During special events, however, parking lots immediately adjacent to event venues are available for visitor parking. In addition, there is street parking available throughout the campus. The West Chester Borough owns the parking meters on the WCU campus and the hours of enforcement are as follows: MONDAY – WEDNESDAY:
8 am – 10 pm
THURSDAY – FRIDAY:
8 am – 12 am
SATURDAY: 5 pm – 12 am
Please use the suggested lots for each of the venues, as these are the lots that will not be ticketed during the event. If you are attending a weekday event between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm and are unable to find parking in the suggested lot, you may pay to park in one of the conveniently located parking garages. The New Street Garage, Sharpless Street Garage and Student Recreation Center Garage are located on North Campus within a short walking distance to all venues. You may pay daily to park in any garage at a rate of $1.50 per hour, $9.00 max daily rate. The Matlack Garage required a parking permit, but is available for special event parking at no charge.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. Thus, famously begins Jane Austin’s masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice. Now all the wit and romance of this classic 1813 novel come to life in this refreshingly fast-paced and engaging stage adaptation. Jane, Elizabeth, and Lydia Bennet are likely-looking girls in a period when a woman’s one possible career is matrimony. Finding a husband may not be Elizabeth Bennet’s most pressing concern, but with four sisters and an overzealous matchmaking mother, it’s difficult to escape the subject. When the strong-willed Elizabeth meets the attractive but enigmatic Mr. Darcy, is it possible for them to look beyond his pride and her prejudice, and to make the best match of all? 14

Some make it to the fire escape, only to have it collapse beneath their weight. Others run to the exit door but find it locked. Dozens leap from the windows to their deaths, shocking the crowd of onlookers gathered below. And some through bravery or sheer luck make it out alive. By using real words spoken by real people, from Ukrainian seamstresses to millionaire Fifth Avenue socialites, The Triangle Factory Fire paints a heartbreakingly clear picture of a disastrous day in American history and explores the human toll such a tragedy takes on us all.

Cinderella, Jack (of beanstalk fame), Little Red Riding Hood, a Baker and his Wife set out into the forest on their quests to find “happily ever after.” Along the way they meet Rapunzel, a Wicked Witch, a lascivious Wolf, vengeful Giants, a couple of charming Princes, and their own destinies. This beloved musical parable about the loss of innocence, the joys and sorrows of adulthood, and the price paid for getting the things you really want, is sure to challenge and delight you!

The West Chester University Poetry Center offers a variety of programs and activities that help expand its mission of bringing poetry to an ever-widening audience. The Iris N. Spencer Poetry Awards offer total of $6,500 each year to Undergraduate Students for original poetry which includes the award for Sonnet, Villanelle, Myong Cha Son Haiku, the Rhina P. Espaillat Award, and the Wil Mills Chapbook award. The Donald Justice Poetry Prize awards one poet each year with a cash prize and the publication of their manuscript. Sean Thomas Dougherty will be the Center’s Fall semester Poet In Residence and judge of the Iris N. Spencer Poetry Awards. His residency will include classroom visits, craft talks and a public reading. Acclaimed editor, environmentalist and innovative teacher Anna Lena Philips Bell will be the Keynote Speaker for Transformation: Evolving Approaches to Teaching, Poetry, and the Natural World; a Poetry and Pedagogy Conference in November. Our spring featured reader will be the award-winning formalist poet, novelist and essayist Anna Maria Hong. Judging the Donald Justice Poetry Prize we have the renowned poet, playwright and musician Cornelius Eady who will also be the Keynote Speaker for the annual Poetry and Creative Arts Festival in April. His Folk and Americana band, The Cornelius Eady Trio, will showcase the musicality of his poetry in their featured performance at the festival.

Allison Short, Miss WCU 2020, will be on hand as contestants compete in talent, interview, evening gown, onstage questions, and casual wear as well as highlight their service, academic success, and community leadership. This year’s show will feature production numbers, former titleholders, special guests, and WCU performance groups. WCU spirit and pride will fill Asplundh during this exciting event that awards over $3,000 in scholarships and prizes.

The Sandra F. Pritchard Mather Planetarium at West Chester University holds evening shows for the general public. The live monthly presenttions are hosted by a PhD astronomer and consist of an overview of what is visible in the current night sky. In addition, a portion of each show focuses on a particular aspect of astronomy. Pre-recorded movie shows are offered as well. The movie shows, presented by WCU students, offer a shorter tour of the night sky followed by a fulldome movie. All shows start promptly at 7 PM and run approximately one hour. Admission is $6 per person. Children under the age of 5 may sit on a parent’s lap free of charge. Tickets must be purchased ahead of time by calling the SSI ticket office at 610-436-2266 or by going on-line at http://wcupatix.com. The planetarium is wheelchair accessible.
