O
n behalf of West Chester University, I am pleased to welcome you to our 2014-15 season of cultural and community programming. West Chester University is proud to provide unrivaled cultural opportunities to the residents of Chester County and beyond. There is no need to go to New York or Philadelphia to experience the very best in music, theatre, Cokie Roberts with President Weisenstein dance, and art. You can find all that, and more, right here on our campus. Last year, more than 80,000 people visited West Chester University to enjoy a variety of concerts, theatre and dance programs, lectures, exhibits, and other cultural events. I am happy to once again present the President’s Speaker Series, which brings extraordinary public figures to WCU. Last year, the series featured investigative journalist and author Bob Woodward and ABC News political commentator Cokie Roberts. This year, we look forward to welcoming Jackie Joyner-Kersee, who won three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals in the Olympics, as well as Emmy award-winning journalist Jane Pauley, who has been involved in national news reporting since 1975. I appreciate the enthusiastic support that our neighbors throughout the region show for West Chester University’s cultural programs and the students, faculty, staff, and visiting artists who present them. Such support and our thriving regional arts collaborations – which include partnerships with the Kennett Symphony, Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and Brandywine Ballet – are essential to our success. We also have formed partnerships around the globe, with WCU faculty and staff bringing their talents to Norway, Poland, Austria, Great Britain, and other locales. Our 2014-15 season of cultural and community events promises to be outstanding, with attractions for every member of the family. I look forward to seeing you at one of our cultural events this year. Sincerely,

The Yeomen of the Guard, or The Merryman and His Maid, opened October 3, 1888, at the Savoy Theatre and ran for 423 performances. The darkest of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, Yeomen ends with a broken-hearted main character and at least two reluctant engagements, rather than the usual armful of marriages. However, Gilbert’s “pointed” satire and punning one-liners abound. There are plenty of topsy-turvy plot complications, and many believe that the score is Sullivan’s finest. Indeed, some enjoy Yeomen particularly because of its ever-changing emotional balance of joy and despair, love and sacrifice. Conferences The 21st Annual West Chester University Poetry Conference: Exploring Form & Narrative June 3-6, 2015 The West Chester University Poetry Conference is the nation’s largest allpoetry writing conference. The conference is unique because it offers workshops in traditional poetic craft and provides a national forum to discuss major trends in contemporary poetry through critical seminars. As critic Carlin Romano has noted, it is “the nation’s most intellectually rigorous conference for poets” (Philadelphia Inquirer). The conference is an annual program of the West Chester University Poetry Center, founded in 2000 to further the study and appreciation of poetry.
