Ensuring Student Success Thanks to the generosity of nearly 8,200 donors – a 12 percent increase over last year – the West Chester University Foundation received close to $5 million in 2011,

over $3 million of which was in cash gifts. Part of West Chester’s success was the result of significant increases in the percentage of parental contributions, gifts from friends of the University and in the amount of pledges and gifts made during the University’s annual phonathon. In 2011, gifts from parents increased by 49 percent, and friends’ donations were up by 39 percent. A four percent increase in phonathon commitments representing an additional $10,000 was attributed to new donors. The University’s Foundation also extended their visits to alumni and friends of the University around the country. Officers travelled to parts of New England, Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Ohio, Indiana, Chicago, and even as far as California and Washington state. As President Weisenstein notes in this issue of the West Chester University Magazine, the University is attracting strong students and providing the educational experiences they need to succeed. In this annual report, it is only fitting that we recognize the many individuals and organizations whose gifts made it possible for us to continue ensuring our students’ success.

Rec Center Ribbon Cutting Even the heavy downpour that early October afternoon could not dampen the enthusiasm of everyone who gathered for the long-awaited rec center ribbon cutting. Sharing in the celebration were campus administrators, faculty, community leaders, representatives of the facility’s design and construction companies, WCU students, current and past Student Government presidents, Michelle Strausbaugh and Jessica Alicea, respectively, University trustees and alumni, including Brad Horstmann’11, who had served on the Recreation Center committee. Every day since the center’s opening in August, approximately 2000 students have taken advantage of the new facility.

Forest Service Reps Visit Gordon Natural Area Over the summer, President Greg Weisenstein welcomed Forest Service representatives to the Robert B. Gordon Natural Area for Environmental Studies (GNA), which

the regional arm of the agency has chosen as a best practices site for managing invasive species. Northeast Deputy Director Anne Hoover, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, State and Private Forestry, Forest Health Protection, Washington Office, and her team toured select sites in the mid-Atlantic and New England areas, including West Chester’s Gordon Natural Area to gauge the health of the region’s forests and hear about best practices. Service. Calling the site an “ecological sanctuary,” Gerry Hertel, GNA stewardship manager, guided Hoover and other guests on a forest tour, along with University biologist Harry Tiebout, who is faculty administrator for the GNA. “Our work on the effects of deer, nonnative plants, non-native insects and diseases that attack and kill trees, and non-native earthworms helps us and others to manage their forests to maximize all benefits, including carbon storage, storm water management, and habitats for plants and animals,” explained Hertel. Hertel provided an overview of other projects conducted in the GNA since the area became a protected site in 1973. Among the activities that target invasive species are regular garlic mustard pulls and surveys of the effects of deer and invasive plants on native trees (also supported by the Forest Service and the PADCNR). “The Gordon Natural Area is a unique resource that we are very fortunate to be able to preserve within a relatively densely populated part of the Commonwealth,” notes President Weisenstein. “It serves the greater community as an educational site, provides opportunities for recreation, and adds to the ecosystem of the region.”

Poetry Center Director Joins Creative Luminaries as UCross Fellow

photo: Marion Ettlinger

Kim Bridgford, poet, editor and director of WCU’s Poetry Center, has joined the

ranks of such literary luminaries as Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Annie Proulx, National Book Award nominee Elizabeth Gilbert, and Guggenheim Fellow ZZ Packer. Selected as one of this year’s Ucross Fellows, she spent nearly two weeks as a resident at the Ucross Foundation, an artists’ colony in Wyoming’s High Plains. "It is a humbling experience to be selected as part of such a rich tradition," says Bridgford. Only 10 artists (including musicians, visual artists and writers) are at Ucross at any one time and fewer than 100 artists are supported annually by Ucross Foundation Fellowships. The highly competitive awards offer artists, writers and composers from around the United States and the world, in all stages of their professional careers, the opportunity to participate in one of two residency sessions annually. Residencies vary in length from two to six weeks.

While at the Foundation, Bridgford worked to complete an interdisciplinary travel project with visual artist Jo Yarrington, also a Ucross Fellow for fall 2012. The pair had begun the 10year collaboration as colleagues at Fairfield University in Connecticut. Their travel included 10-day trips to Iceland (2004), Venezuela (2007) and Bhutan (March 2012), places Bridgford describes as "countries 'at the edge' in terms of geography as well as change, whether economic, political or technological." The result is a series of three books of poems and photography, entitled The Falling Edge: Iceland, Venezuela and Bhutan (2004-2012). Bridgford says the project has been based around units of ten, such as the ten syllables of the iambic line of the sonnet. The first two books are made up entirely of sonnets. The last book contains sonnets, villanelles and free verse. Many of the poems in the project have appeared in The Iowa Review, Connecticut Review, The Lyric, and The Robert Frost Review. The project has been exhibited at the Stevenson Academy of Fine Arts, and presented at conferences including the West Chester Poetry conference. "Not only has this collaborative project taught me a great deal about the world – I've traveled, researched, and written about countries that were new to me as a traveler and writer – but it has also taught me about the nature of friendship," Bridgford says. WCU Student Interns with PA Department of State Hayley Dunn of Nazareth is working for the Pennsylvania Department of State as part of a 15-week internship sponsored by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE).

A junior political science major, Dunn is one of 15 students participating in The Harrisburg Internship Semester (THIS) program, which provides students the opportunity to work in all areas of state government while earning a full semester’s worth of credits. Dunn, the daughter of Nancy and Timothy Dunn, is a 2010 graduate of Nazareth Area High School. She and the other students participating in the program will attend several academic seminars during their fall semester internship and will complete an individualized research project as part of the program’s requirements. More than 500 students from PASSHE universities have participated in THIS since the program began in 1989. Interns have worked with dozens of state agencies, as well as in the offices of the governor, the speaker of the House of Representatives and the attorney general, gaining valuable insight into the workings of state government at the policy-making level.

University-Corporate Collaboration As part of the University's Pharmaceutical Product Development Program (PPD) one company is pre-

senting a semester-long seminar series this fall that touches on every aspect of its pharmaceutical drug development process. The weekly series, called "Navigating Rare Disease: From Patient Needs to Solutions," features lectures by ViroPharma Incorporated staff members, from the CEO to scientist to patient. Located in Exton, Pennsylvania, ViroPharma Incorporated is an international biopharmaceutical company committed to developing and commercializing innovative products that address unmet medical needs. "This is graduate-level material being presented to our undergraduate students

4 West Chester University

directly from ViroPharma company representatives,” explains Stephen J. Zimniski, director of the PPD program. “It represents the kind of deep involvement our students experience with our pharmaceutical and biotech partners in this unique program, as students are truly at the forefront of current medical developments." The innovative curriculum for the University's bachelor of science in pharmaceutical product development program was developed through extensive dialog with key industry leaders and is designed to meet the specific needs of students seeking careers in this dynamic industry. It is coupled with up to two summers of employment in the industry following students' sophomore and junior years. Mandatory paid internship assignments are performed within the industry and provide graduates with a level of understanding and experience that cannot be duplicated in the classroom. Graduates of this program are poised to enter the industry with a breadth of understanding that previously took several years

of industry experience to acquire. "At ViroPharma, we take seriously our obligation to be involved in our community, including through the development of innovative programs with academic partners like West Chester University," said Will Roberts, ViroPharma's vice president of corporate communications. "Our goal is to encourage these students to start thinking about pharmaceutical development possibilities, and to raise awareness about the importance of product development to address the needs of patients suffering from rare diseases." "The success of our PPD program is due to the extraordinary level of involvement we receive from approximately 30 companies located within Southeastern Pennsylvania, and the unprecedented opportunities they offer our students," says Zimniski. "Because we provide them with such highly skilled students, it's a real fusion of academia and industry." The selective PPD program (www. wcupa.edu/ppd ) accepts about a dozen students per year. Its graduates typically accept positions within the pharmaceutical and biotech industries within a month of graduating, or proceed to medical or graduate school programs.

WCU Breaks Ground on More South Campus Housing The West Chester University Foundation recently broke ground on a new student housing complex on South Campus.

The project expands housing at the Village with five threestory apartment buildings, bringing 264 new beds to campus. Each apartment offers a living room, kitchen and two bathrooms, and can accommodate four students – each with a private bedroom. Both construction and operation of the units, once open, will be the responsibility of University Student Housing, the subsidiary of the West Chester University Foundation that builds and operates campus housing. Total cost is approximately $25 million. The apartments are scheduled for completion in time for the Fall 2013 semester. University Student Housing also is moving forward with plans for Commonwealth Hall, which will occupy the former site of Sanderson Hall. The eight-story structure will contain suites with semi-private bathrooms and be built in a style similar to the three newest North Campus residence halls: Allegheny, Brandywine, and University Halls. Construction is expected to begin in early 2013, with an expected completion date in the summer of 2014. It will accommodate 660 resident students.

Testing a Robot Ray Visitors to the University’s South Campus swimming pool in September would have come upon a somewhat curious sight: WCU biologist Frank

Fish donned in a wetsuit and scuba gear underwater photographing a small manta ray. In fact, as part of an interdisciplinary science and engineering research team that includes the University of Virginia and Princeton University, Fish was testing a robotic ray designed to simulate the hydrodynamics and material properties of the manta ray. “We are trying to emulate the performance capabilities of these unique creatures so that we can build something like it that one day we may find useful,” explains Fish. The researchers anticipate that the development of a robotic ray could be of value to the military, oceanogra6 West Chester University

phers, marine biologists and environmentalists. Using high speed video cameras, Fish and his colleagues have travelled well beyond their campus labs to observe manta rays, which are rarely found in captivity. Manta rays, the largest of the species, can measure up to 26 feet in width and weigh 6,000 lbs.. Fish and others have gone on scuba diving expeditions to exotic places like the island of Yap, part of Micronesia in the Western Pacific Ocean. Yap is known for its giant manta rays and a favorite destination for divers from all over the world. Assisting Fish and the other researchers at WCU's pool were WCU graduate student Molly Gabler, undergraduate Griffin Lewis and Janet Fontanella'12.

ANNUAL REPORT

A Message from President Greg R. Weisenstein I want to express my appreciation to all of you—alumni, friends and partners, students and their families, faculty, and staff—whose gifts are helping to support West Chester University’s national reputation for excellence, value, and student success. We have just completed an exceptional year at WCU, and we are positioned for an even more impressive year ahead. The University is one of just three Pennsylvania schools—and the only one in the State System—ranked in the top 100 Kiplinger “best buys” among 500 public four-year colleges and universities around the country. In their recently released 2013 rankings, U.S. News and World Report names WCU among the best regional universities in the north, moving us up 14 places this year. Our reputation translates into high interest among potential students. We received more than 14,350 applications for the fall 2012 first-year class of just over 2,300. Also for this fall, we received three times as many transfer applications as we could accept. WCU attracts strong students and provides the educational experiences they need to succeed. As one result, our retention and graduation rates are the highest in the State System. WCU student excellence extends throughout our classrooms and well beyond. Two of our athletic teams—baseball and women’s field hockey—won national championships this past year, and our women’s lacrosse team came within a goal of joining them. WCU is the first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference university to win two NCAA championships in the same academic year. Much as WCU alumni become leaders in their careers and communities, our students make significant contributions as undergraduates. During the 2011-2012 academic year, WCU students contributed close to 350,000 hours of volunteer community service. Our students, faculty, and staff also continue to make the University a cultural leader for the region. WCU University Theatre is presenting its 50th-anniversary season this year, and last year, more than 79,000 people attended campus cultural events. International programs, including collaboration and exchanges with institutions around the world, are among our exciting and vital areas of growth. At the end of May 2012, WCU hosted the Knowledge Crossing Borders international conference on higher education, which attracted participants from 20 different countries. The members of the concurrent Global Presidential Conclave on the Future of Higher Education are preparing to publish and disseminate the Conclave’s recommendations, which call universities around the world to action in addressing the most critical issues of our time. West Chester University is vigorously preparing for an outstanding future. The University’s new strategic plan, titled Building on Excellence, is now in the final stages of development and will guide the University over the next decade. The strategic-planning process has included extensive academic planning as well as development of a facilities master plan. The emphasis in all cases is on student success. The work of a great university such as ours demands excellent facilities for its students and programs. Particularly newsworthy this year is the opening of our magnificent Student Recreation Center, which provides vastly increased opportunities for WCU students to participate in recreation and socialize right on campus. The Rec Center is a student-initiated and student-supported project, leaving funds available to advance other critical capital improvement projects, such as added classroom and office space and progress toward implementing geothermal heating and cooling in all of our campus buildings. Along with our quality, planning, and innovation, the dedicated support of donors such as you is critical to the University’s continued excellence. We appreciate that our campus-wide growth in reputation has led to enthusiastic pride in WCU and a desire to invest in a winner with a very bright future. I greatly value your generosity and high regard for West Chester University. In closing, I again want to express my sincere gratitude for all that you do to ensure access to WCU for qualified students and to enhance the strength of our programs. You are contributing to the University’s ongoing success—expanding the quality of life for our students and alumni and serving communities throughout the region and beyond. I look forward to seeing you on campus throughout the year!

Assoc. Provost & Dean of Graduate Studies Dr. Lorraine Bernotsky Highlights of the year included the following:

• Under the leadership of Dr. Kevin Dean, the Honors College and the Honors Student Association experienced a record year of accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, service and leadership. With its curriculum and programming built around the theme of leadership development for the purpose of community enhancement, the over 250 members of the WCU Honors College hold over 50 different majors. Sixty percent of the members earned a minimum 3.75 grade point average for the spring 2011 semester, and students clocked over 1000 hours of community service. Included in the service were the spring signature service programs of the Graduate School Fair (bringing representatives from over 40 institutions of higher learning to campus for students interested in professional and graduate education,) and Aid to South Africa, a campus/ community event that raises funds and awareness of South African children suffering from HIV-AIDS. This event gained recognition as the “2011 Outstanding Student Program of the Year,” and the Honor Student Association earned commendation as “2011 WCU Campus Organization of the Year.” • The Office of Graduate Studies has been restructured. Larry Walsh began as the Director of Graduate Enrollment in July to oversee the recruitment, admission and retention efforts to ensure increased responsiveness to our graduate students. All academic issues will be addressed by Dr. Bernotsky, in her new position of Associate Provost and Graduate Dean. • Graduate enrollments remain strong, in spite of the challenging economic times and the discontinuation of federally subsidized loans for graduate students. In fact, twelve programs exceeded last year’s numbers of admitted students, with considerable growth in enrollments in the Master of Public Administration, Master of Public Health and the Master of Social Work. • A new online graduate program in Special Education started this summer, and additional new graduate program development is underway in a number of areas: pharmaceutical product development, languages and cultures, and nursing, to mention a few. • The Graduate Student Association has been revitalized with new leadership. The president, Chibu Anyanwu (Master of Public Health), and her executive council kick started the academic year with a student orientation program that attracted a record number of students. • Finally, 2011 marks 50 years since West Chester University awarded its first graduate degree. Faculty, staff and students will be discussing ways in which to commemorate this important milestone.

The event was promoted by Mayor Carolyn Comitta as well as other departments and colleges on campus. Students met with various ambassadors and officials from the United Nations. • The CBPA Undergraduate Student Advisory Board met throughout the academic year. Students brainstormed on a number of ideas that could help to improve student advising, discussed internship experiences, talked about online education and discussed ways to better integrate the career center services with the departments. • The Cottrell Center hosted a number of entrepreneurs in classes and in large venues. These included: David Gansky, a successful alumnus who has started several businesses, Adam Gripton, CPA, JD who addressed financial reporting for small and startup companies; Howard Lubert, President, Keiretsu Forum Mid-Atlantic who addressed angel funding and introduced a due diligence project to a group of MBA students, and Steven Washington, founder, Philly Home Buyer to address serial entrepreneurship. ANNUAL REPORT ANNUAL REPORT from the

College of Arts & Sciences Dr. Lori A. Vermeulen, Dean Highlights of the year included the following: • The CAS experienced record high enrollments in AY 11-12, delivering over 100,000 student credit hours for the first time in Fall 2011. Undergraduate majors are up 17% in CAS. • The CAS remains a campus leader in sponsored research activities, engaging 37 faculty in submission of over $4.2M in grant proposals (47 proposals submitted), with nearly $680,000 in grants received. For example, Dr. Kevin Aptowicz in Physics received a $204,000 three-year grant from the National Science Foundation to study the “Origins of Mechanical Fragility in Disordered Solids.” • The CAS has established a new Community Television Station, under the leadership of Dr. Michael Boyle. We have established new partnerships with the Borough of West Chester to air their council meetings and with the West Chester Area School District to air sporting events. • The CAS received a major gift in support of the planetarium renovation. The West Chester University planetarium has been serving WCU students, local school children and the public since 1969. A campaign is underway to raise additional funds to bring digital technology, a seamless dome and new seating to the facility in Summer 2013. • The CAS continued to support graduate programs through a competition for funded graduate assistantships. The CAS funded 15 projects that provided part-time and full-time assistantships spanning 10 academic departments. For example, Dr. Gail Galitano in the Department of Mathematics received an award to mentor graduate student on a project entitled “A Professional Development Program using Graphing Handhelds/Mini-Computers and its Attitudinal Effect on Teachers of Mathematics - a Four Year Study”. • The proposal for the Professional Sciences Masters Program in Pharmaceutical Product Development was approved by the Council of Graduate Schools. This new program is expected to serve students seeking to pursue a career in science by providing interdisciplinary professional skills in areas such as “business basics, policy, law, regulatory affairs, finance, organizational behavior, ethics, communication, and teamwork.” (Council of Graduate Schools, 2011.) • The CAS is working with the College of Health Sciences to develop a Doctorate of Science in BioStatistics. Planning for this project was supported by a generous donation from Endo Pharmaceuticals. • The CAS funded 6 projects ($40,000) through a competitive internal grants program focused on international activities. For example, Professor Daria Nikitina developed a formal relationship between WCU and Moscow State University. She led a group of five students that conducted field research in Russia. • Through its internal grants programs, CAS funded 12 projects that support diversity and international activities. These include a project conducted by Dr. Cherise Pollard in the Department of English, “African American Ex-Patriots: An Exchange Program Focusing on African American Writers and Poets in Paris, France” • The WCU Poetry Conference, held June 6-9, featured poet Christian Wiman, the editor of Poetry magazine (celebrating its one hundredth year); world renowned cellist Ernst Reijseger (director Werner Herzog’s favorite musician); and renowned national and international poets and authors who served as faculty.

NEWLY ESTABLISHED ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS From July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012. The following is a listing of endowments, scholarships, and awards that were created in the last fiscal year. The funding of an endowed scholarship by the donors listed below demonstrates confidence in West Chester University and a strong commitment to education, which is valued and greatly appreciated. A special thank you to our donors who are helping WCU students to thrive!

Dr. Robert J. Young Memorial Scholarship

was established by the family of Dr. Robert Young. Dr. Robert J. Young taught courses on the histories of India and South Asia at West Chester University for thirty-five years before his retirement in 2002. A well-respected scholar, he was also affiliated with the South Asia Regional Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Young made numerous trips to India, including a term in the Peace Corps from 1962 to 1964 and as a Senior Fulbright Researcher in 1986. The scholarship supports a junior or senior who has completed several courses in Asian history or philosophy with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, priority given to candidates who have a demonstrated financial need.

Wells Fargo Minority Scholarship

was established by The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation. The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation, a privately owned foundation, commits itself to partnerships and programs that help educators in developing student achievement. The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation aims to produce strong and active communities, enhance the quality of life, and generate a positive difference. Aside from education, it also supports these areas: civic, arts and culture, environment, community development and health and human services. The scholarship supports students from underrepresented groups, including but not limited to African-American, Asian, or Latino.

Virtue Endowed Scholarship

was established by Natalie Fekete Virtue ’00 M’11 and Marc Virtue M’07. Natalie

graduated with a BS in Business Management and a minor in Religious Studies in 2000 and completed an MA in Applied Ethics in 2011. Marc completed his MPH program in 2007. Both Natalie and Marc appreciated the quality of education provided by West Chester University and want to provide support to others who are not in a financial position to pursue a Master’s in Applied Ethics or a Master’s of Public Health.

The Kennett Symphony Children’s Chorus In-residence Scholarship

was established by The Kennett Symphony Orchestra. The Kennett Community Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1940 as an all-volunteer orchestra by Dr. D. Duer Reynolds, a prominent local physician and Ray Lyman Ott, head of the Kennett Consolidated School music department. It quickly evolved into an association of professional musicians from Pennsylvania and surrounding states and gained a reputation for producing quality symphonic music. Today the Kennett Symphony of Chester County is Chester County, Pennsylvania’s only professional symphony orchestra. A Message from the Alumni Director Greetings WCU alumni and friends! My name is Tracey Dukert and I am your new Director of Alumni Relations. While I may be new to the position, I’m not new to the University: as a member of the Class of 2006, it’s great to be back home. As I’m sure you can relate, it feels like only yesterday I was walking across the quad to class, getting a bite to eat in Lawrence Dining Hall, or painting Wayne Hall’s ground floor windows to help celebrate Homecoming (it was no easy task painting all of those letters backwards). Needless to say, it’s very exciting to be back on campus serving as your Director of Alumni Relations. I continue to be inspired by the many exciting accomplishments and developments at our alma mater, from the opening of the new state-of-the-art 72,000+ square foot Student Recreation Center, to not one but two NCAA national championships, to recognition from the Carnegie Foundation for the hundreds of thousands of community service hours students fulfill each year – we sure do have a lot to be proud of. Next time you’re in town, consider stopping by the Alumni House. We would love to take you on a tour of the new Student Rec Center, grab a coffee at the Starbucks on campus, or even browse through the collection of Serpentines (which are now available to view online thanks to the Library). And speaking of the World Wide Web, you can stay up-to-date with your alma mater and the WCU Alumni Association from wherever you are in the world by visiting us online. Check out the new and improved Online Community (www.wcualumni.org), like us on Facebook (facebook.com/wcuaa), follow us on Twitter (twitter.com/wcuaa), look for us on Instagram (search: WCUAlumni), and connect with us on LinkedIn (search: West Chester University Alumni). The Alumni Relations Office, WCUAA Board of Directors, Chapters, and Committees are in the process of planning exciting events in-town, across the region, and around the nation – stay tuned for more information. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to me with your questions, comments, ideas, or simply to reminisce. Remember, this is your Alumni Association. Join your fellow alumni in exploring and participating in its dynamic programs and services today, and add great new memories to those that you already have. Wherever you might be, always remember you have a home at West Chester. Looking forward to meeting and working with you, Tracey Dukert ’06 Director of Alumni Relations

1960s

Carole Redding Murray, a 1962 alumna who served as the University’s alumni director from 1996 to 2003, died on July 26.

A native of Villanova, Pa., she returned to her alma mater in 1990 as the assistant bursar and six years later, was named Director of Alumni and Special Events. In that year’s Alumni News, Carole reminisced about her time as a student at West Chester State Teachers College, how the campus had changed and remained the same in the 40 years since she was a freshman, and, as the alumni director, she outlined her goals for the Alumni Association: “My goals for the association are to see the West Chester name given the acknowledgement it deserves; to develop programs that bring alumni back to campus; and to strengthen relationships developed here.” She achieved those objectives with energy and enthusiasm.

Carole also believed that the Association should be about service and support for the University’s students. To that end, she, herself, sought to give young women the same opportunity for a West Chester education that she had experienced. In 2001, two years before she retired, she endowed a scholarship for first-year education majors at WCU who had attended her former alma mater, Little Flower High School in Philadelphia. In addition to her husband, James, Carole was survived by her five children, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
