SACRED CELEBRATIONS JUBILATE DEO .................................................................................... Giovanni Gabrieli (c. 1554-1612) Rejoice in God, all the earth, for thus shall those who fear the Lord be blessed. Rejoice in God, all the earth. May the God of Israel bring you together and himself be with you. May he send you help from the sanctuary and from Zion keep you safe. Rejoice in God, all the earth. May the Lord bless you from Zion, who made heaven and earth. Rejoice in God, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. -- Selected texts from Psalm 100, 20, 128, 134, and Tobit 7 THE FRUIT OF SILENCE............................................................................. Pēteris Vasks (b. 1946) Benjamin Weaver, violin; Sharon Chen, violin; Katrina Kelly, viola Alexandra Paino, cello; Caleb Sharp, bass
The fruit of silence is prayer. The fruit of prayer is faith. The fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is service. The fruit of service is peace. -- Saint Teresa of Calcutta IZ ṼECHNŎSTI MUZÏKA ........................................................................... Sergei Taneyev (1856-1915) Suddenly, music sounded out of eternity, and it streamed forth into infinity, capturing Chaos along the way. And in the abyss, great lights began to whirl about. Each ray trembles like a tuneful string. Awakened by this trembling, life appears not to be a lie only to those who on occasion hear this Divine music, whose mind is enlightened and whose heart is ardent. -- Yakov Polonsky, tr. Morosan
MISSA BREVIS ..................................................................................... Leonard Bernstein 1. Kyrie (1918-1990) 2. Gloria 3. Sanctus 4. Benedictus 5. Agnus Dei 6. Dona nobis pacem Theodore Carroll, countertenor Jon Partridge, Johnny Peacock, Aton Saliaris, and Luke Thurston, percussion
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For You alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant us peace. -- Medieval liturgical text LOBET DEN HERRN .......................................................................................... Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Alleluia! -- Psalm 117:1-2
SACRED CELEBRATIONS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT................................................................................ Ella Grainger (1889-1979) Percy Grainger (1882-1961) Abigail Arnold, soprano
Love at first sight, how could it be? I looked at you; you looked at me. Our eyes by gazing gave a token of instant love as yet unspoken. A sweetie's love, though unexpected, yet in yon eyes it is reflected. Sweet is love's dream, I could not bear its absence from me anywhere. Stars in your eyes, I gleaming see, whenever you thus gaze at me. So heaven sent it seems a wonder if love can be continued yonder, ah, for me. -- Ella Grainger BYE, BYE TOOTS (A MEMORIAL CANTATA) ....................................... Paul Alan Levi 1. Tallyho (b. 1941) 2. Unpoem 3. Bye, Bye Toots 4. Muir Woods Cantata Sándor Kádár, piano
Sunday mornings Burt hunts muffins. He dons a leather bush outfit, his trusty bow and arrows slung over one shoulder. He strides into town stalking prey. Muffins are sighted asleep in a pastry forest. An arrow’s in the bow… twaaannnnggggg… It flies toward banana bran hitting the mark, wounding blueberry, scattering corn and cinnamon raisin.
He returns with the catch; I skin it while he brews cowboy coffee. -- Ann Chernow Unbelievably unbalanced, unblushing, unconscionable, unbending unmen, unavailable for comment. Undoing, uneasy, unfathomable women, unhappily unravelling, unclose and uncoupled. -- Burt Chernow You won’t believe this! Talk about creepy. As I sat typing with the door wide open, guess what? Extraterrestrials. The one night you’re out, You’d’ve had goosebumps. Maybe you don’t believe it. I didn’t either. Anyhow we’re goin’ to the moon and won’t be back soon. By the way Plutarch called and sends his love. I tucked in the cat and I guess that’s that. Tonight if perchance we win the lottery
please use my share to study mysterious phenomena. Farewell, Dearie. There’s no resisting their call. I’ll write if I can, if not… Bye, bye Toots. -- Burt Chernow Not a soul in sight. Fog blankets roll in from the ocean hiding the sun, slipping between bay laurel and redwoods faster than screaming Steller blue jays. White-gray winds caress hills, obscuring valleys where sheep may safely graze. -- Ann Chernow DANCE........................................................................................................... David Conte (b. 1955) Jon Partridge and Luke Thurston, percussion Aaron Hungerford and Sándor Kádár, piano
Prais’d be the fathomless universe, For life and joy, and for objects and knowledge curious, And for love, sweet love - but praise! praise! praise! For the sure-enwinding arms of cool-enfolding death. Dark mother always gliding near with soft feet, Have none chanted for thee a chant of fullest welcome? Then I chant it for thee, I glorify thee above all, I bring thee a song that when thou must indeed come, come unfalteringly. Approach strong deliveress, When it is so, when thou hast taken them I joyously sing the dead,
Lost in the loving floating ocean of thee, Laved in the flood of thy bliss O death. From me to thee glad serenades, Dances for thee I propose saluting thee, adornments and feastings for thee, And the sights of the open landscape and the high-spread sky are fitting, And life and the fields, and the huge and thoughtful night. (Dance on, sing praises! For life, joy, love, sing praise!) -- Walt Whitman
