SYNOPSIS Vienna, late 19th century Act 1 - Eisenstein’s Home Gabriel von Eisenstein has been sentenced to eight days in prison for insulting an official, with no help from his attorney, Dr. Blind. Eisenstein’s maid Adele receives a letter, addressed from her sister, but actually written by Dr. Falke, inviting her to Prince Orlofsky's ball. She pretends the letter says that her aunt is very sick and asks her mistress Rosalinda (Eisenstein's wife) for the evening off. Falke, Eisenstein's friend, arrives to invite him to the ball. They recall a practical joke which Eisenstein played on Falke a few years ago. (After a costume party, Eisenstein left Falke, very drunk and dressed in a batcostume, in the center of town.) Falke is secretly planning a light-hearted revenge. Eisenstein says goodbye to Adele and his wife Rosalinda, pretending he is going to prison but really planning to enjoy an evening at the ball first. After Eisenstein leaves, Rosalinda is visited by her former lover, the singer Alfred, whose voice she cannot resist. Frank, the prison warden, arrives to take Eisenstein to jail. In order not to compromise Rosalinda, Alfred agrees to pretend to be Eisenstein and is taken to jail.

Act 2 - Prince Orlofsky’s Villa Falke explains to Prince Orlofsky that he is using the ball to get his revenge on Eisenstein. As part of his scheme, Falke has invited Frank, Adele, and Rosalinda to come the ball. Rosalinde pretends to be a Hungarian countess, Eisenstein goes by the name "Marquis Renard," Frank is "Chevalier de Chagrin," and Adele, who has borrowed one of Rosalinda's dresses without permission, pretends she is an actress, Olga. Eisenstein is introduced to the “actress” Adele but recognizes her. As the party progresses, the tipsy Frank and Eisenstein, both pretending to be French, develop a comradery. Falke introduces the masked Rosalinda. She convinces everyone that she is Hungarian with a Hungarian song. During a flirtatious meeting, Eisenstein tries unsuccessfully to persuade the mysterious Hungarian Countess to unmask. She succeeds in taking Eisenstein’s lucky watch from him. Orlofsky makes a toast to champagne, and the company celebrates.

Act 3 - Prison The jailor Frosch has had one-too-many drinks. Alfred, still in jail in Eisenstein's place, irritates Frosch with his singing. Adele arrives to ask the “Chevalier de Chagrin” (actually Frank) to sponsor her career as an actress, but Frank does not have the means to do this. Meanwhile, Dr. Blind arrives after Alfred asks to send for a lawyer. Eisenstein arrives to serve his sentence. He is surprised when Frank reveals that he is actually the prison warden and that that Eisenstein’s cell is already occupied by a man who claims to be Eisenstein. Frank explains that he had arrested Eisenstein at his home while enjoying an intimate dinner with his wife. Furious, Eisenstein takes Dr. Blind's wig and glasses in order to disguise himself and confront the impersonator Alfred. Rosalinda arrives and Eisenstein takes off his disguise and accuses her of being unfaithful to him with Alfred. Rosalinda presents his watch, and he realizes that the Hungarian countess he tried to seduce at Orlofsky's party was actually Rosalinda in disguise and that he, not she, is at fault. Falke enters with all the guests from the party and explains that the whole thing was revenge for Eisenstein's practical joke from years before. Eisenstein begs Rosalinda to forgive him for his attempted infidelity, blaming it on the champaign. She accepts this explanation and forgives him. Orlofsky promises to finance Adele's acting career, and the company joyfully sings again to champaign.
