NOTES AND TRANSLATIONS Kyrie Lord have mercy on us. Christ have mercy on us. Lord have mercy on us. Gloria Glory be to God in the highest. And in earth peace to men of good will. We praise Thee; we bless Thee; we worship Thee; we glorify Thee. We give thanks to Thee for Thy great glory. O Lord God, Heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son. Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father. Thou that takes away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takes away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sits at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only art the most high, Jesus Christ. Together with the Holy Ghost in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Credo I believe in one God; the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, light of light, true God of true God, begotten not made; being of one substance with the Father, by Whom all things were made.

Who for us men and for our salvation descended from heaven; and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost, of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. He was crucified also for us, suffered under Pontius Pilate, and was buried. And on the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures: and ascended into heaven. He sits at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead; and His kingdom shall have no end. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; as it was told by the Prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I await the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Sanctus and Benedictus Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Agnus Dei Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, Grant us peace.

Tonight’s performance is of what are commonly called the “Marian Antiphons”—four hymns to Mary, performed most often following compline services in the Roman Catholic Church. According to their traditional calendar, Alma Redemptoris Mater is typically sung during Advent through Candlemas, Ave Regina caelorum after Candlemas through Holy Saturday, Regina Caeli during Eastertide, and Salve Regina after Eastertide until Advent. The works tonight are performed in historical order, beginning with Dufay, a French composer of the early Renaissance. His Alma Redemptoris Mater for three voices sounds modal and rhythmically primitive, reminiscent of earlier centuries’ discant and conductus styles. De la Rue, a contemporary of Josquin, was one of the earliest influential composers of the Netherlands. He employs point of imitation technique in his Ave Regina caelorum for four voices; this contributes to the piece sounding more sophisticated than Dufay’s earlier work. Palestrina is the quintessential composer of the Italian High Renaissance. His Regina Caeli for four voices also exhibits point of imitation as well as extensive use of text painting, particularly with passages of quicker notes on celebratory words such as “laetare” and “alleluia.” Victoria is Spain’s most famous composer of the late Renaissance. His 1576 Salve Regina for five voices is the most sophisticated of the four antiphons performed tonight. Five sections of rich polyphony are preceded, interspersed, and followed with monophonic chants. Alma Redemptoris mater Gracious mother of the Redeemer, who is the gate to enter heaven, and star of the sea: Help your fallen people who try to rise. You who have borne, nature marveling, you holy begetter, virgin before and after, who from the mouth of Gabriel received that “Hail:” Have mercy on our sins. Ave Regina caelorum Hail, Queen of heaven. Hail, Ruler of angels. Health to you, holy root from whom light has risen upon the world. Rejoice, Rejoice, glorious one, beautiful beyond all others. Farewell, most lovely, and intercede for us with Christ. Regina caeli Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia. For he whom you were worthy to bear, alleluia, is risen, as he said, alleluia. Pray for us to God, alleluia. Salve Regina Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To you we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to you we send up our sighs, mourning, and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, most gracious advocate, your merciful eyes toward us, and after this, our exile, show to us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
