ARTIST PROFILES Carlos Salzedo, French Harpist, Pianist, Composer of Chanson dans la Nuit which means Song in the Night. His compositions influenced many composers with his new ideas for the harp. This piece demonstrates the many special effects Ie, Oboic Flux, Tympanic Sounds, Rapid Whistle Effect, Falling Hail effect to name a few. James A. Devor is a Senior at Wells School of Music Honors College. He is the Principal Bassist of the WCUSO and WCUCO, Majoring in Theory and Compostion, Jazz Studies minor, Music History Minor, Harp Minor. He first composed Cambrian Travels for French Horn and Harp. Professor Galante recommended the part to be written for Trumpet, and taught him the harp part techniques. This pieces includes many meter changes. James has performed in China last year which inspired the title. This June he performed on harp in Vienna, Austria with the Community Harp Ensemble, directed by Professor Galante. Alfredo Roland Ortiz was born in Ciego de Avila, Cuba. He went to Venezuela with his family to study the Venezuelan harp wit Fernando Guerrero, and Paraguayan harp with Alberto Romero. He became a medical Doctor and specialized in Music Therapy. He also began to perform professionally and given lectures and masterclasses for the National Conferences of the American Harp Society and World Harp Congress. He was Professor Galante’s Paraguayan and Latin Style Teacher and taught her many pieces. This is his original composition Ecuador which is based on a Pasillo Style. It is typical to play many pieces in the high register using chords smaller than the octave and mini glisandi connecting chords and notes. Gloria Galante, 2019 Jazz Legacy Harpist, Professor, Director, is the Founder of the Wells School of Music Harp program in 1987. She is versatile and dynamic as a performer, deeply committed to teaching community and using the harp as an instrument of healing. Gloria has toured worldwide performing Jazz, Classical, Latin, African and Pop genres. She has performed with such stars as Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, Jose Feliciano, Luther Vandross, Odean Pope, Tyrone Brown, Al Jarreau to name a few. She was introduced to Harpist, Pianist, second wife of John Coltrane - Alice Coltrane by Blue note recording Saxophonist Odean Pope at a Pharoah Sanders Concert in 1998 Gloria and Alice became friends. Alice and Odean also became her mentor. Gloria puts her own signature design into Alice’s original composition. WCU Harp Festival will take place November 17, 2019 3 PM MWAT. We will feature Music of Austria, and J. A. Devor’s arrangements.
