What is known today as the Annual Holiday Program was started on December 18, 1921, by the newly appointed Head of Music Department for the West Chester State Normal School, Professor Charles Edward Hausknecht, affectionately known as “Uncle Ned.” Known then as the Christmas Carol Service, the program featured choral and sacred music performed by the Senior Girls’ & Junior Girls’ Glee Clubs who would process down the halls of the Old Main Chapel and later the Emilie K Asplundh Concert Hall with lit candles and adorned in white gowns. From the 1930s to the 1960s, the Christmas Carol Service grew to include school choral ensembles and student organizations such as the Junior Chorus, Vesper Choir, College Choir, Men’s Glee Club, Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorus, and Concert Choir. The 1970s and ’80s saw the event title change from the Christmas Carol Service to the Annual Christmas Concert, then the Christmas Carol Program, and finally the Holiday Choral Program. During the 1990s, the Holiday Choral Program began including secular music, and by 2001 it would become known as the Holiday Program and expand to include the WCU Symphony Orchestra, WCU Percussion Ensemble, and the Criterions Jazz Ensemble. A highlight of the Annual Holiday Program is the Honor Soloist for O Holy Night (also known as Cantique de Noël). Traditionally given to the best female singer, known as the Christmas Chantress, the Honor Soloist has become a co-ed position. This time-honored tradition remains to this day. We hope you will enjoy the musical artistry demonstrated by our Wells School of Music students during the Annual Holiday Program this year and for years to come.

elcome to the 2021-2022 Wells School of Music Concert Season! As many of you know, the Wells School of Music produced excellent concerts throughout the 2020-2021 season despite the pandemic. For those of you that logged on throughout the year to view our concerts, thank you!

100TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY PROGRAM The Annual Holiday Program is a staple of the West Chester University holiday season since its inception in 1921 featuring both sacred and secular music and remains a focal point of the community. This year’s performance will feature a new festival setting of the “Gloria” by San Francisco composer David Conte, for choir, brass, and percussion. Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall Philips Memorial Building Assigned Seating Tickets: $12 wcupatix.com

In this year’s brochure, we are recognizing some of our most generous donors that supported our efforts throughout the year. As you can imagine, producing over one hundred concerts for broadcast last season required great resources. Donor contributions helped us fund our recordings and support our student’s education with scholarships and grants. Consider donating to the Wells School of Music today by clicking on the word “GIVE” on the WCU website landing page (www.wcupa.edu). This season, we are excited to welcome you back to our performance venues to experience the joy of live music. We hope to see you throughout the year, however, if you prefer to watch from the comfort of your home you can click on the Livestream button on our website and view the list of concerts available for online viewing. I hope you enjoyed the brief historical outline of our Holiday Program as we prepare to present the 100th Anniversary Holiday Program! As WCU celebrates 150 years as an institution, we will also celebrate a century of great music-making to kick off the holiday season! We hope to see you soon!
