The River Ridge Trail is part of a plan to preserve urban natural areas or “greenspace” in a non-motorized trail system that winds throughout the Waupaca Area. The first trail segment, a scenic loop of 1.6 miles, opened in fall of 1996. Since then, over 22 miles of trails have been designated. Bikes are allowed only on limestone or blacktopped surfaces. The trail lies in the tension zone between Wisconsin’s northern and southern eco-regions, an area of unique biological diversity. By linking parks and other public and private lands, the community and its visitors will be able to enjoy the wealth of natural features for years to come.

Things to Do
Waupaca Area History Some of the earliest settlers came to Waupaca in the mid-1800s looking for the “wonderful falls” up the river that they had heard so much about. Some say “Waupaca” means tomorrow, sparkling waters, clear water, or brave young hero. Others credit the city’s name to an old Indian chief, “Wa-Puka”, whose name means “watching.” Whatever its origin, Waupaca is an area rich in history.
Holly History & Genealogy Center 321 South Main Street, Waupaca, WI 54981, (715) 256-9980, WaupacaHistory.org The Waupaca Historical Society was founded in 1953 with a mission to preserve, advance and disseminate knowledge of the history of the Waupaca Area. The Holly Center provides the community with a history and genealogy library and research facility, an exhibition area, and a meeting and lecture room. Open on Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 1-3pm. Also on Saturday mornings from 9 am to noon in June, July & August. Admission is free. The Hutchinson House Museum – located in Waupaca’s South Park The Hutchinson House, built by Chester Hutchinson’s pioneer family in 1854, was purchased by the Waupaca Historical Society and refurbished in the Victorian style and is now open as a public museum. The museum has an
impressive display of household furnishings, clothing, glassware, and textiles, with many of the artifacts having ties to early settlers of Waupaca County. The Hutchinson House is a familyfriendly destination with a special scavenger hunt for children ages 5-12. Open Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend on Saturday and Sunday and summer holidays from 1 to 4pm. Admission is free but donations are appreciated. Waupaca Train Depot 525 Oak Street (County E) just north of the railroad bridge. In 1907 the Wisconsin Central Railway spared no expense to construct a beautiful passenger station with sandstone walls, Spanish Tile roof, and three waiting rooms each with a fireplace. Formerly operated by the Soo Line, today the busy Canadian National main line passes directly in front of the depot. Many historic railroad items are on display inside. Things to Do houses the 1899 baggage car from Waupaca’s trolley line. A wooded walking trail leads to the scenic granite quarry a short distance from the depot. The depot is open during Strawberry Fest in June as well as for other events. Contact the Waupaca Historical Society for a tour or to schedule your own event at the depot. Historic Sites in Rural Rural is a “Yankee town.” All of the descendents originated from Great Britain or New England. This is unique in the area of Wisconsin; there are only two
“Yankee towns” in Wisconsin. Through the years Rural residents have sought to perpetuate the uniqueness of this historic spot where four bridges span the Crystal River and the mill race is still visible. Most of the sites (17 in all) are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the most enjoyable activities is to walk around the village and observe its beauty on the banks of the Crystal River. During the months of June through September, the Rural Historical Society museum is open on Wednesday and Saturday
from 1 pm to 3pm. Contact the Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce for a tour pamphlet. Iola Historical Society 210 Depot Street, PO Box 412 Iola, WI 54945 (715) 445-IOLA (4652) www.IolaHistoricalSociety.org The Historic Village & Museum complex of the Iola Historical Society is a seven building complex. Featured are the historic 1894 Iola & Northern Railroad depot and attendant caboose, the Helvetia Town Hall built in 1919, a reproduction of the 1897 one room Townsend School, a replication of Iola’s 1901 Firehouse displaying three antique firefighting apparatus, and a pioneer style log cabin. A museum building features several unique exhibits including Native American artifacts, and tributes to Iola violin maker Bert Stromberg and a local “Humble Hero” of World War II, B-17 bomber pilot Lee Nelson. Another building, the “Machine Shed,” displays local agricultural, construction and manufacturing
artifacts. The Society has also in place seven in an growing series of “Historic Iola” markers placed at sites around the village. It annually hosts the Iola Strawberry Fest on the fourth Sunday of June and a Taste of Norway & Lost Arts Fair event on the first Saturday of October. The museum is open on Saturdays in June – August from Noon to 4pm or by appointment. The Arts The Waupaca Area has a rich arts community. Local organizations host events throughout the year to feature local talent from choral concerts to standing art exhibits to festivals. The Waupaca Community Arts Board brings arts into everyday life with the mission of “community building through the arts.” The annual Arts on the Square is an eclectic celebration of the arts with a full weekend of exciting creativity and fun including a juried fine arts show with over 40 artists, three performance stages, participatory arts workshops, street performers, community art projects and it all kicks off with a street dance on Friday night. In March, the Irish Wake is a musical and theatrical celebration where participants join in a walk with a faux coffin visiting establishments in Downtown Waupaca singing songs with live musicians while honoring those who have passed. The Waupaca Bach Festival is a weeklong celebration of the life, times and music of JS Bach with various events in many locations for all ages. The Waupaca Community Arts Board also hosts the Phantom Art Gallery, an ever changing gallery set up behind the windows of vacant downtown buildings. Artwork on display is available for purchase. The Waupaca Fine Arts Festival fosters the arts through promotion and sponsorship of artistic programs, cultural activities, and educational leadership to further promote artistic appreciation to the citizens of the Waupaca Area. Founded by Waupaca High School Choral Director, Gerald C. Knoepfel in 1963, it all began with his desire to produce Mendelssohn’s Oratorio, “Elijah” with a Community Chorus and Civic Orchestra. His dream became a reality later that year when the first Community Chorus and Civic Orchestra presented its first annual concert. Since that time, the Fine Arts Festival, its membership, along 38

with generous contributions from the citizens of Waupaca and beyond, are responsible for helping to support and bring the Arts to Waupaca. The three main branches of the Fine Arts Festival include: The Waupaca Community Chorus and Civic Orchestra, the Waupaca Community Theatre, and the Waupaca Art Show. The artists of the Hidden Studios open their doors to the public for Art Along the Ice Age Trail, A Tour of Working Studios in Central Wisconsin annually on the first weekend of October during the peak fall foliage. Twenty artists are featured in nine different studios along the selfguided tour through winding roads and quaint communities. For detailed dates and times for these and other arts events in the Waupaca Area, see the Event Calendar in this guide.
