The River Ridge Trail is part of a plan to preserve urban natural areas or “greenspace” in a non-motorized trail system that winds throughout the Waupaca Area. The first trail segment, a scenic loop of 1.6 miles, opened in fall of 1996. Since then, over 22 miles of trails have been designated. Bikes are allowed only on limestone or blacktopped surfaces. The trail lies in the tension zone between Wisconsin’s northern and southern eco-regions, an area of unique biological diversity. By linking parks and other public and private lands, the community and its visitors will be able to enjoy the wealth of natural features for years to come.

Waupaca Area History Some of the earliest settlers came to Waupaca in the mid-1800s looking for the “wonderful falls” up the river that they had heard so much about. Some say “Waupaca” means tomorrow, sparkling waters, clear water, or brave young hero. Others credit the city’s name to an old Indian chief, “WaPuka”, whose name means “watching.” Whatever its origin, Waupaca is an area rich in history.
Waupaca Train Depot 525 Oak Street (County E) just north of the railroad bridge. In 1907 the Wisconsin Central Railway spared no expense to construct a beautiful passenger station with sandstone walls, Spanish Tile roof, and three waiting rooms each with a fireplace. Many historic railroad items are on display inside. A car barn on the depot grounds houses the 1899 baggage car from Waupaca’s trolley line. Open during Strawberry Fest in June as well as for other events. Contact the Waupaca Historical Society for a tour or to schedule your own event at the depot.
The Hutchinson House Museum – located in Waupaca’s South Park The Victorian style museum has an impressive display of household furnishings, clothing, glassware, and textiles, with many of the artifacts having ties to early settlers of Waupaca County. From Churchill Street the Yellowstone Trail turned west onto School Street (which becomes Badger Street) to the downtown area. The traveler turned north on Main Street where he turned west at the Dane’s Home onto Granite Street. It continued west onto Hillcrest where it merges into Fulton Street, leaving town westward past “Chady’s Corner” (State Highway 54 and County Highway QQ).
