Things to Do

Things to Do With so many exciting activities in the Waupaca Area you will be sure to enjoy your time here. Our suggestion; pace yourself, enjoy and have fun! Here are some of our favorite things to do in the area: boating and water sports on the famous Chain O’ Lakes, golfing at one of our area courses, hiking or biking along scenic trails, canoeing our rivers and creeks, touring our museums, learning about our history and visiting our historic sites. Maps and information can be found at www.WaupacaMemories.com or the Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce office. Trails

River Ridge Trail – This greenspace trail winds through the Waupaca Area linking parks, public and private lands. The trail includes paved and unpaved trails and only allows bikes on limestone or blacktopped surfaces. Wau-King Trail: This is a 3.9 mile paved pedestrian and bike trail that connects the City of Waupaca with King and the Chain O’ Lakes area. One end of the trail is located near Shadow Lake in Waupaca by lower South Park where in the summer you will find parking, bathrooms, and a small shelter. The other end of the trail is located in King near the Wisconsin Veterans Home. Enjoy walking this trail in either direction. While in King be sure to check out their many shops and restaurants as well at the Wisconsin Veterans Home. Road Biking Routes – Several routes available ranging in length from 4 to 35 miles. See map on page 23.

Ice Age National Scenic Trail – Several segments traverse the Waupaca Area including sections in Hartman Creek State Park, Emmons Creek State Fishery and Wildlife Area, and Skunk & Foster Lakes State Natural Area. Tomorrow River State Trail – Converted railroad bed travelling from Plover to Manawa with access in Scandinavia just a short drive north from Waupaca. Hartman Creek State Park We welcome you to visit Hartman Creek State Park! As park superintendent it is my privilege and pleasure to invite you to explore and enjoy the many wonders our park has to offer. Hartman Creek is a hidden jewel offering several recreational opportunities for all ages. With several lakes connected to the famous Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes, we offer opportunities for fishing, boating and a beach specifically designed to provide you with a great swimming experience. For those seeking to get out into the park and explore some of the parks many nook and crannies, several miles of trail are here for you to enjoy on our hiking, biking and equestrian trails. During our summer season many come to the park to enjoy a quality camping experience. We are pleased to provide you with 101 campsites within our family campground featuring 23 electrical sites, two shower buildings, one with new shower stalls, and camphosts on sites 23 and 844 to help you with any questions or concerns you may have. We even offer a Teepee for rent! We frequently receive compliments on our campground for the beautiful, spacious sites and the quiet, peaceful experience people have to come to expect over the years. For larger groups we offer a five site group campground that can accommodate up to 50 people per site. The park also has several picnic areas, a restored log cabin called the Hellestad House that doubles as a nature center, and a nationally recognized hiking trail, The Ice Age Trail. On behalf of all the staff and volunteers that work hard to provide you with a great experience I welcome you to enjoy your park! Michael Bergum, Park Superintendent Hartman Creek State Park

✖ ✖

The River Ridge Trail is part of a plan to preserve urban natural areas or “greenspace” in a non-motorized trail system that winds throughout the Waupaca Area. The first trail segment, a scenic loop of 1.6 miles, opened in fall of 1996. Since then, over 22 miles of trails have been designated. Bikes are allowed only on limestone or blacktopped surfaces. The trail lies in the tension zone between Wisconsin’s northern and southern eco-regions, an area of unique biological diversity. By linking parks and other public and private lands, the community and its visitors will be able to enjoy the wealth of natural features for years to come.

King Cottage

Waupaca Area History They say Waupaca was settled on a small waterfall along the Waupaca River in the 1800s by a father and his two sons. There are several thoughts about how the settlement got its name. Some say Waupaca comes from the Indian term “waubuck seba” which means pale water. Others say the name derives from a friendly Potawatomi man named Sam Wapuka, also known as Chief Waupaca. Whatever its origins, we believe what brought people to this area long ago still brings them here today; a beautiful area with abundance resources and endless possibilities.

Hutchinson House Museum and King Cottage Located in Waupaca’s South Park The Hutchinson House was built in 1854 and is the oldest existing

home in the City of Waupaca. The house opened as a museum in 1957, after being moved to South Park the year before. The museum showcases the Victorian era and displays many artifacts from Waupaca’s early settlers. Museum guides will help you take a step back in time and revisit the lives of these early pioneers. The King Cottage, previously a cottage at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, sits

behind the Hutchinson House. A new exhibit tells the history of the Wisconsin Veterans Home and its cottages. Family friendly and fun for everyone! Open Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend on Saturdays, Sundays and summer holidays from 1-4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King is a long term and rehabilitative care facility serving veterans and their eligible dependents. We offer quality medical and nursing care to enhance quality of life. Our highly trained and dedicated staff strive to meet the unique needs of veterans by providing compassionate care built on the foundation of integrity, honor and respect. Waupaca Railroad Depot 525 Oak Street (County E), just north of the railroad bridge At one time, the Waupaca Depot was a significant part of the Waupaca community and the first thing seen by travelers when arriving in Waupaca. In 1907, after a fire destroyed the old building, the Wisconsin Central built a brand-new depot for this important tourist and shipping location. The building sent empty after 1987 until the Waupaca Historical Society purchased it in 2004. Since then, the historical society has worked to restore the building to its former beauty. The Waupaca Railroad Depot features railroad displays, a model train and other open outbuildings. Open Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend on Saturdays and summer holidays from 12-3 p.m. Also open for special events and tours. Historic Sites in Rural Rural is one of only two “Yankee towns” in Wisconsin and is on the National Register of Historic Districts. Its “less than a mile” tour meanders along the Crystal River traversing four stone bridges and showcases 17 historic sites; most of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Touring the historical sites in Rural is a beautiful way to spend the afternoon and observe the scenic beauty of the Crystal River. The Rural Historical Society museum is open on Wednesday and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. during the months of June through September. Contact the Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce for a tour pamphlet and map describing the sites. Historic Walking Tours of Waupaca Discover Waupaca’s past by taking a historic tour which may be taken on foot, by bike, or car. Two tours are outlined in a self-guided tour which is available for purchase

at the Waupaca Area Chamber office for $2. Tour One takes you through parts of Waupaca’s historical downtown and residential area. The tour starts at South Main Street at South Park, continues down Main Street to Lake Street past many wonderful homes, a former hospital, and the famous Cristy House. The tour continues through the historic district traveling by many wonderful homes, churches and a former funeral home, ending back in the downtown business district. By foot this tour is about two miles and will take about an hour and a half. Tour Two is the Commercial Industrial Tour. You will see the Waupaca falls, Waupaca Foundry plant one, the Whale Paper Company, Wisconsin Central Railroad, the Soo Line Freight and Passenger Station, Potato Warehouses and many other businesses. By foot this tour is about three miles and will take about two hours. Iola Historical Society 210 Depot Street, Iola, WI 54945 5 (715) 445-IOLA (4652) www.IolaHistoricalSociety.org Visiting the Iola Historical Village is a great way to view late 19th century and early 20th century historic structures and reproductions. Featured are the 1894 Iola & Northern Railroad depot and caboose, a pioneer log cabin with artifacts, a one room schoolhouse built in 1897, the Helvetia Town Hall built in 1919, and their authentically reproduced firehouse with historic firefighting apparatus. The museum features several unique exhibits including Native American artifacts, and tributes to Iola violin maker Bert Stromberg along with a local “Humble Hero” of World War II; B-17 bomber pilot Lee Nelson. The Machine Shed displays local agricultural as well as construction and manufacturing artifacts. Additionally the Society has in place seven in a growing series of “Historic Iola” markers placed at sites around the village. Open on Saturdays in June – August from Noon to 4 p.m. or by appointment.

Yellowstone Trail In 1912 the Yellowstone Trail became proposed as America’s first trans-continental highway across the northern portion of the country – stretching from the east coast at Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts and ending on the west coast at Puget Sound, Washington. The name derives either from the people using the trail to reach Yellowstone National Park, or because of the stones painted yellow to mark the trail. The Yellowstone trail entered the City of Waupaca by what was the Bunker Hill School located on the south side of Highway 10 on County Road A. You can find signs marking the route traveling westward. The Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce has additional information about the Yellowstone Trail and what sites travelers would have seen passing through the Waupaca Area. Additionally, you can find more information at www. ❚ YellowStoneTrail.org.
