We need all exuberant, floating, dancing, mocking, childish, and blissful art lest we lose the freedom above things that our ideal demands of us. -- F. Nietzsche The Gay Science

PROLOGUE The essence of architecture is architectural sociology. I have always tended to understand architecture from a social level. Architecture is actually a socialization process, not a final state of completion. Architecture is more like a catalyst, a starting point, it will generate spontaneous behavior and social changes, and there will be many positive life phenomena. I really like Hejduk’s architectural concept: “Architecture is the beginning...”. It is also in this sense that ordinary buildings are different every day because of the opening of the process of spatial socialization and personalization; on the contrary, the buildings touted by many contemporary people are closed, a feast of vision and a cage of ideas. It was irritating at first sight, but it was basically over at the beginning. People’s aesthetic orientation is inseparable from the contemporary digitalization process. When electronic screens are the only medium for us to communicate with the outside world, we will lose the most basic observation ability, and our imagination of the entire society will have a fundamental two-level trend. We imagine the world through two-dimensional flattened screenshots. People are caught in a struggle, that is, it is difficult to understand the structure of the world through a flat language, which leads to a complete separation of the self and the world, which leads to individual loss and displacement, and promotes the reorganization of social relations. Therefore, in this logical chain, it is difficult for you to evaluate at which node architecture has an effect, but you must admit that architecture has indeed been ensnared and changed. In this kind of change, the evaluation system is no longer the most important. Up. “A great work will not be affected by indifference or fanaticism. Beauty exists in the balance of the various ministries. Art can only provide food, an impact, and an inducement to become our spiritual experience.” The greatness and ambiguity of architecture is that it does not prove, explain, and answer questions, but it always resonates with society. As an architecture student born in the millennium, I have witnessed the prosperity of information technology. These changes to my life generated by the virtual world are so real and so apparent, I believe architecture in the physical world should also embrace those changes, not only visual but also deep in lives and experience. Now, inane and rhetoric words and ideas filled the architecture discipline, sometimes these “presentations” not only deceives the audience but also deceives the designers themselves. For me, honest is a valuable quality to an architect. Only when one is honest to herself, the work she produced could be sensitive. So, I always ask myself, “Do I really feel the difference”?

Big data city, capital or individual ?

Individual reaearch project -Sep.- Dec. 2021 -Instructor: Yingxiao Chen -Site: Hangzhou

In this project, I asked the question of who is trapped in the algorithm after observing the living conditions of food delivery men in today’s Chinese society. I analyzed the relationship among the stakeholders behind the takeaway delivery behavior, the gig economy, Internet distribution platforms, regional contractors, and big data algorithms, and I questioned the rationality of the current algorithm-dominated urban design in the context of nowadays society with a new logistics system. This will allow people to think about the relationship among algorithms, the government, capital, and individuals from the perspective of the city, and be wary of the upcoming digital Leviathan

With the development of information technology and the Internet, the labor process tends to be virtualized and concealed. In this context, algorithms have become an important window into the politics of digital labor. The take-out work based on algorithm management has the characteristics of “time embedded”, “emotional labor” and “gamification management”. The relationship between people and technology constructed by digital workers and platform algorithms highlights the appearance and interior of China’s digital labor, that is, the tension competition between technological politics and underlying narrative, algorithm attachment and self-empowerment. The problem of “internalization” of digital labor should not be ignored. Re-understanding and reviewing the technological and social value of algorithms has become a top priority. Because it profoundly affects labor politics, labor relations and China’s social transformation.

POWER STRUCTURE BEHIND RIDERS The operating mode of the Internet platform and the organization of labor have undergone profound changes. Together with the participation of outsourcing companies, the identification of labor relations between all parties has become more complicated. Due to the lag of the law, the life rights and health of delivery workers cannot be guaranteed. It also accelerated the process of capital exploitation of takeaways.

NEW WORLD -- CHARACTER NARRATIVE 01

1 < DATA = NEW GOD > The semi-biological and semi-data body formed by slime mold and data has become a new god, forming an invisible new city above the original one, and manipulating the urban growth and life forms of the real society through data. The country, government, and capital are all his puppets. 2 < CAPITAL = INFINITE GEAR > Infinite gear is the embodiment of capital. Capital calculates benefits through time, squeezing people’s every minute and every second to the greatest extent, and it became the sun halo of the new world.

3 < DATA TRANSMISSION = ENERGY VINE > The energy vine is the assistant of the data god to control the social form. The main vine is attached to the core of time and maintains the growth of the city in the sky by absorbing the time and data energy in the five-dimensional space; the secondary vine is attached to the important buildings of the city group and absorbs the data and energy inside the city. 4 <CITY CENTER= 5 DIMENSIONAL CORE> This wireless introverted sphere is the core of the five-dimensional space. It carries important data and time information and controls the lives of everyone in the city. It is independent but not neutral. It is still the puppet of the data god.

5 <MONITOR = SKY EYE> There will be flight monitors over the city, they sample the road and city information in all directions and send it to the data tower. It has become the eyes of the data god.

7 <SIGNAL TOWER = DATA ENCRYPTION> When the flight monitor data is transmitted to the signal tower, it will be encrypted layer by layer, and then transmitted to the city in the sky, so as to ensure the stability of the data empire. The data tower is mainly operated manually. It is the savior to ensure the confidentiality of data.

The front of the car carries goods, which will break away at a specific section and enter the underground transportation system; the parking space carries takeaways and food to various coordinate points. No matter how advanced the technology is, there is still manpower that cannot be replaced.

02_HOW LIBRARY PERCEIVE TIME ? An Knowledge Sharing Ecosystem with different time velocities

Individual project -June.- Sep. 2020 -Critic: Mingxuan Qin -Site: Yuquan Campus, Zhejiang University , Hangzhou -program: Library rebuild

This is a campus building renovation project. In addition to structural renewal, I pay more attention to the value and influence of the new building on the campus. I prefer to name the building “heterotopies” 1 cause as soon as it is labelled “library”, the thing itself as a space for a certain open exchange and discussion is clinically dead. I imagine the school library and co-working space as an ecosystem, as an open, fluid system in which a set of actors establish an exchange of knowledge and energy, in a delimited but permeable area. I use a “religious ”knowledge cube, encounter space and open platform to transform college life into an event that can be reflected, criticized, and imagined. “Heterotopies” originated from Foucault’s space philosophy. It challenges the classicism’s interpretation

11

of space, where space and time are used as a structural framework, and “events” are packed into this framework as “content.” “Heterotopia” means that a real space contains several different space types that are contradictory or conflicting at the same time, and these different spaces can be observed or imagined. In this project are a meditation room composed of a sequence of classical spaces, a large platform working layer bred under the contemporary high-efficiency cooperation mode, and a cube representing the form of future knowledge constitute a heterotopia. As an ecosystem, it reminds students of their attitudes towards knowledge: we are not living in a teaching building to passively acquire knowledge. Our behaviors, together with the self-evolution of the knowledge space, constitute the sum of social relations. 1 Michel Foucault,Dits et ecrlts 1954-1988,Gallimard,1994

Section Perspective A

The building is organized in a infiltrative order with three layers of space. Cube space – as an abstract expression of the future knowledge space, explores the relationship between people and future information. The large platform representsW the modern efficient and equal working environment. A gap is in between that serves as the circulation and the meditation space for encounter. It adopts the spatial prototype of traditional architecture, and creates a “heterotopies” full of fantasy and tranquility between the efficient contemporary working mechanism and the future knowledge space.

SPACE 1

LINEAR SPACE : THE FUTURE CUBE

The future space is composed of six metal walls with openings and a future knowledge space wrapped in glass bricks. People walking in a linear space surrounded by towering walls will feel the oppression of future information on people. The communication between people is limited. People are immersed in a sea of information, but they can’t really own the knowledge itself, they can only become rushing passengers.

CLASSICAL SPACE : SPACES OF ENCOUNTERS

The space of meditation and encounter is fused in the spiraling stairs, and people will enter completely different spaces without knowing it. There are two types of meditation spaces. One is to penetrate and block the line of sight through the height of the wall to form a labyrinth-like space, giving people the opportunity to meet; the other is to have no walls and rely purely on geometric forms. Furniture and different window opening methods define the space. People will still choose a way of reading and thinking in the long meditation space, getting rid of the rigid layout of the traditional library.

A Home Other Than Home

Individual research project of documentary architecture -Observe and record the aging of a Chinese village from the perspective of architectural anthropology

03_BLUE PATCH

New rural communities construction has been in full swing in China in recent years. In particular, the rural areas of the Yangtze River Delta have become a dreamy destination for the government, the tourism developers, and young architects. However, there are always some villages forgotten by the reformers due to lack of economic and ecological value, spontaneously producing a marginal, mixed, and permeable landscape. I focused on my hometown, a small village in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, and observed the aging of a village through the spatial system restoration behavior called“blue patch”. Hence, for this project, I completed a documentary architectural practice from the perspective of architectural anthropology. Through the narratives of three different architectural entities, I will dig deeper into the power game that promotes the characteristics of the village and appreciate the aging process of the village. Besides, I will use photography, collages, interviews, architectural drawings and archival materials to penetrate into the daily lives of villagers, and explore the role of government and land policies, economy and kinship, religion and lifestyle in the penetrating landscape of my hometown.

CHAPTER 1 “BLUE VILLIAGE”——UNCLASSIFIED VILLAGE In recent years, the country has vigorously rectified and reformed villages and divided the villages into different levels. However, villages with a large base number have become unclassified villages because of their relatively small population. The government allows itself to destroy itself, so blue additional houses are prevalent in most villages. We call this type of village that cannot be classified as blue villages. Through a comprehensive analysis of the regional history and policy background, we know that after the reform and opening up, the rural settlement space is transformed from the traditional scattered layout to the concentrated community. The development of township industry has transferred 1/3 of the rural labor force. The mobilization of rural industrial structure affects the development of rural space. The current guiding ideology of life after production has dismembered the traditional rural housing form and mixed the functions of villages and towns. Presents a mixed model of industry, commerce and residential area. The Southern Jiangsu development model afterwards led to the centralized development of the park economy, urbanization, and the migration of farmers to cities, leading to hollowing out and urbanization of the countryside.

CHAPTER 2 CHARACTERISTICS OF “ BLUE PATCH ” When we focus on a village: Dongxi Village, we will find the distribution characteristics and types of ” blue patch “. The first is the expansion of villagers’ houses. Most of the places to be added are the corridors between the neighborhoods, the front space in the courtyard and the rooms on the second floor. This type of expansion is mostly for increasing the storage area and building temporary parking garage for motor vehicles or non-motor vehicles ; the second is the expansion of residents along the river. Due to the popularity of washing machines, women seldom go to the river to wash their clothes. As a result, the public space is restricted. Residents located by the river use this public area as a self-occupied rooms, there are also villagers who specially build blue houses along the river to meet the needs of fishing and fish breeding; the third is making full use of abandoned old buildings and carry out public cultural space erosion; the fourth type is to repair parts of the house, such as making canopies, gutters, roof repairs, and so on. N

By analyzing the spatial characteristics and types of the blue patch, we can form a comprehensive understanding of the way and form of the additional space. Obtain first-hand data through surveying and mapping, photography, interviews, etc.

Due to economic recession and population aging, many public activity centers have been abandoned. Some young people give up their right to inherit their houses after their elders pass away. HOW “BLUE PATCH” EXIST AND EVOLVE ? Research on mapping of “blue patch” expansion and changes of traditional Chinese dwellings based on threemonth interviews and architectural surveying Traditionally, the role of architecture has been to confine or control space, shaping social experience and relations through static forms. Our architectural vocabulary largely belong to a past era of static space and have not hybridized or morphed to accommodate and inspire changing spatial conditions, to include the shifting, fluid, and amorphous digital, or the history of peoples for whom movement, not stasis, is the predominant experience.

A top-down, autocratic perception does not reveal the realities and qualities of an aging village. The realities of a village necessitate multiple gazes, multiple ways of understanding that cannot be deduced from the plan alone. Much of the village is comprised of subversive and informal activities occurring beyond the limits of formal planning and design. As such, we need new and different ways to understand them. Text and narrative may be one such gaze. Photographic studies, radio-active readings, sound, etc. may all be other points of entry into understanding our village. Beyond architecture's darwing, the different families could annotate the architectural representations by adding their own stories, reflections and comments directly onto the drawings or by using tracing paper, illustrating layers of personal and collective narratives. 27

CHAPTER 4 HOW DO “BLUE PATCH” AND LIFESTYLE EFFECT EACH OTHER

At this scale, I will select two houses, map the evolution of their houses over the past ten years, and analyze the relationship between blue houses and lifestyle.

2021

First of all, the impact of blue houses on life is that people’s activity areas mainly stay indoors, and semi-outdoor and outdoor spaces are gradually occupied. The space for interaction and communication between people has become narrower and narrower. Secondly, because blue house can be added at will, people pay less and less attention to the organization of indoor space, and there are many forgotten spaces that are idle and piled up, making the space utilization rate very low. Finally, I will propose strategies for village renewal from the perspectives of policies, materials, virtual villages, etc.

r

People’s lifestyle can also give a way to interpret the appearance of th population, the young and middle-aged people in the village are all g to continue living in the village, and most of the elderly have hoarding so the indoor space is becoming more and more insufficient. So the improvement of transportation and sanitation conditions has made e public space in front of the house has been continuously occupied and hold, reducing the original breath of life. In the end, as the children ha house has to be divided into several independent suites. Therefore, in family, the children build additional buildings in various parts of the each house more and more closed, and people’s life trajectory is limite 29

Q : WHY DOES THE POPULATION DECLINE AND THE HOUSES EXPAND INSTEAD ? Fragments in life

STRATEGY 1 NEW RESIDENCE POLICY CONNECT THE INCREASE OF “ BLUE PATCH “ TO THE DECREASE OF RESIDENTIAL AREA

Linking increase and decrease is a basic urban and rural land policy in China, which is now applied to the rural residential policy. Because the essence of blue patch is illegal expansion, the township government turned a blind eye to it, resulting in the unlimited expansion of private houses and the occupation of public space. However, the blue houses are also the achievements created by the villagers themselves, it is not recommended to completely demolish them. Therefore, a new residential policy is formulated, that is, to add 1m²of blue house, an indoor area of 1m² will be vacated as a semi outdoor public space. This not only encourages people to make full use of the forgotten indoor space, but also ensures the area of public space. CHAT CORNER

04_HOW THE URBAN EDGE BREATHE ? weaving as a strategy that bring into ecological dialogue the rural and urban worlds

Individual project -Mar.- Jun. 2021 -Individual work -Critic: Weishun Xu, Yuting Xie, Christian Nolf -Site: Jiaxing, Zhejiang province -Zhejiang University | Urban Design Joint Studio

EDGE OF JIAXING

This project proposes a new strategy which can effectively understand the current condition of city edges, and turn the passive boundaries into thick and dynamic interfaces that bring into dialogue the best of the rural and urban worlds. I mainly focus on how can characteristic landscape structures frame and configure new urban fronts. Jiaxing is located in East China, the northeastern part of Zhejiang Province, and the hinterland of the Yangtze River Delta Plain. It is located at the intersection of rivers, lakes and seas, and chokes the throat of the Taihu South Corridor. In the process of urban expansion, Jiaxing has slowly developed a trend of circular expansion from disorderly growth. Along its important railway lines and main rivers, the borders of Jiaxing City are in an extremely disordered state. At present, there are mainly two kinds of boundaries. One is due to

35

the expansion of cities, which has raised many new towns for economic development, resulting in new administrative boundaries. The other is due to the natural division of the Beijiao River, resulting in Ecological break. The term “Urban Fabric” is used to describe the various forces in our urban environment and the elements weaved together to make our city unique. In my XL-scale, I mainly focus on two directions: one is study the Ecological patch type and Ecological continuity, another one is study different patterns of urban fabric , distill different urban forms into specific patterns and summarize the common problems of urban growth. Based on the analysis, I proposed a general boundary expansion strategy on the xl scale, and then selected a typical 1X1 km^2 site for analysis and transformation to further demonstrate the universality of the strategy.

ECOLOGICAL PATCH ANALYSE

Jiaxing is located in East China, the northeastern part of Zhejiang Province, and the hinterland of the Yangtze River Delta Plain. It is located at the intersection of rivers, lakes and seas, and it chokes the throat of the Taihu South Corridor. In the process of urban expansion, Jiaxing has slowly developed a trend of circular expansion from disorderly growth. Along its important railway lines and main rivers, we can see that the borders of Jiaxing City are in an extremely disordered state. At present, there are mainly two kinds of boundaries. One is due to the expansion of cities, which has raised new towns for economic development, resulting in new administrative boundaries. The other is due to the natural division of the Beijiao River, resulting in Ecological break. The water network of Jiaxing City is densely distributed, forming a ring structure that radiates from the center to the outside. The main rivers are the Beijing-hangzhou Grand Canal and the Beijiao River . We can see three different forms of green patches. The first one is the four wetlands along the border zone, they play a significant role in air purification and water self-purification in city. The second type is the riverside green belt. The green space in the urban-rural boundary takes the large-scale constructed wetland as the core, presenting finger like shape, and the green space basically diverges along the river. The continuity of the green belt is weak and the public participation is low. All of them are negative riverside greening. The third type is urban greening. The growth direction of urban greening is mainly along rivers and roads, and is grid-like. However, in the process of urban expansion, the greening pattern is separated by the boundary and does not extend well. The fractured water system and fractured ecological green belt at the boundary are not conducive to the migration of species.

URBAN EDGE PATTERN ANALYSE

There are two types of boundary form, one is hard, another is soft. compared with a straight boundary left, a curvilinear “tiny-patch”boundary may provide more ecological benefits, including less soil erosion and greater wildlife usage.Through the vertical and horizontal viewing angles, we can see vegetative edges with a high structural diversity are richer is edge animal species. The migration patterns of them on the borders : A straight boundary tends to have one direction movement, which blocks the migration of species on both sides of the strait. While a convoluted boundary is more likely to have movement across it. We can summarize that the pattern on the left is too rigid and not suitable for ecological improvement and species migration, which leads to the city destroys the ecological network with an overwhelming advantage in the process of integration of them, and the separation is aggravated by mechanical artificial green space. The development pattern on the right will facilitate the penetration of nature into urban space and the integration of different types of land in cities, which proves to be a better “weaving” technique. According to our mapping, I apply my strategy "weave" to ecological restoration. First, weaken the independence of the wetland, and enhance its selfpurification ability through segmentation and river bank improvement; at the same time, increase the ecological diversity of the wetland, which can radiate to the surrounding green belt to a greater extent. Secondly, to enhance the continuity of riverside greening, form a "z-shaped" active ecological corridor on both sides of the Beijiao River; finally, extend the urban greening texture in the cross-border zone to form a greening network that goes hand-in-hand with urban growth. URBAN EDGE RESHAPE STRATEGY Jiaxing City is surrounded by the Beijiao River, so it has formed a natural water boundary. The way of urban proliferation is disorderly and messy, and the original water bodies have not been integrated into the expanding urban territory. Therefore, the boundary of a city should not only be a single line divided by administrative blocks or natural river banks, but a boundary belt surrounded by multiple winding curves that can be used for the city to breathe.Where there is a gap in the boundary, we need to pay special attention to transformation. The gaps are mostly concentrated in the mixed areas of industry, large-scale ecological areas and residential areas. We need to carry out ecological restoration and industrial upgrading of the reformed areas, and promote the economic and cultural development of typical plots, so as to enhance the vitality of neighboring cities. The strategy I adopted is “weave”. On the one hand, by increasing the radiation range of important wetlands, connecting large and small green patches in the city to create continuous green corridors along the river; on the other hand, through the transformation of industrial areas, Different elements in the city, such as ecology, culture, commerce, and residence, are integrated and stimulated in the original industrial zone through organic weaving techniques.spaces, spreading rich city life across the site. In the next scale, I will select a piece of land of 1x1km^2, and prove the rationality of the overall renewal strategy through the analysis of the current situation of the land and the renovation design. The land is a composite land of a large ecological zone and an industrial zone. The ecological wetland has not played its effective ecological restoration function. The surrounding chemical plants are also affecting the water quality of Jiaxing in all aspects, resulting in a situation where the ecological area and the industrial area are incompatible. The city boundary is also separated by high roads. Three or four different landscapes are formed in the area, which aggravates the desolation of the area.
