LOCH LOMOND has the biggest surface area of any British loch. At over 600 feet at the deepest point it is also the deepest. The West Highland Way follows the wild and far less populated east coast of Loch Lomond, skirting Ben Lomond (shown with a dusting of snow above) but in summer at least there are a number of options for reaching the opposite shore. Regular ferry services operated by Cruise Loch Lomond Ltd traverse the loch. They link Rowardennan with Luss and both

The hills are alive… COME THE SUMMER the hills around Fort William are alive to the sound of… at the start of May, trials bikes in the world famous Scottish Six Days Trial event. This year’s event runs from May 2 to May 10 and attracts entries and enthusiasts from all over the world. A month later, on June 7 and 8, two wheels are competing again, but this time without any raucous exhaust sounds when the Fort William Mountain Bike World Cup comes to the hills around the Fort. Other competitive events through the season (apart from the West Highland Way Race – see opposite) are the Glen Nevis River Race (held in July), the Ben Nevis Race (takes place in September) and, for athletes, the various Highland shows. While the main events listed above all require early pre-registration, less formal competition can often be found in the many tests of speed and stamina on offer on the Highland Games circuit. Apart from the Lochaber Agricultural Show (this year on August 23), there are games at Glenfinnan (August 16), Mallaig and Morar (August 3) and Arisaig on July 30. Have a go!
Situated in town centre with a variety of accommodation including dormitory rooms and double, twin and family en-suite rooms – close to bus and train stations. Ideal situation for walkers, hikers etc. TV Lounge, Drying Room and use of kitchen for self-prepared meals also available.
