Nearly there! A party of European walkers celebrate at the ‘Original’ end of the West Highland Way. Actually, lads, there’s another mile to go to the ‘True’ finishing line at the end of the High Street. But well done, all the same. (Good choice of reading, too!)

This unique building in the picturesque village of Balmaha has become the place to eat in the Loch Lomond area.
IT’S NOT classic whisky country, but the West Highland Way could be said to go from one classic malt distillery to another. Shown left above is the Glengoyne Distillery, just a stone’s throw from the Way by Killearn, right at the southern end, while the Ben Nevis Distillery, above, lies just where the name suggests at the foot of the Ben, perhaps a mile or so from the centre of Fort William. Not keen to break your momentum with a diversion off the route? Right at the end of the Way there is the opportunity to sample a huge range of malts at the handily sited Whisky Centre, while at the half way stage the Green Welly Stop in Tyndrum sports an equally impressive range in its Whisky Galore boutique.
You can be assured that a warm welcome awaits you at the Oak Tree Inn with it's huge roaring log Fire in the bar and it's extensive range of malt whiskies and locally brewed Scottish ales. Enjoy the best Scottish cooking in our welcoming bar or restaurant.

RANNOCH MOOR, which the Way skirts after climbing from Bridge of Orchy, is one of the most desolate spots in Britain. Mile after mile of bog is relieved by virtually no signs of human intervention. This ruin, to the north east of the Way, on the fringes of the Moor is testament to rare earlier habitation.

The end of the line THEY CALL it the Outdoor Capital of Britain – or is it perhaps the World? One thing is certain: there is actually plenty going on in and around Fort William during the late spring and summer months. The Way itself is the focus for a number of annual events that attract some of the fittest and most accomplished long distance runners in the country. Best known and most fiercely competitive is the West Highland Way race itself. It is now some 30 years since man first raced man on the near 100 mile route. In 1985 two keen runners went the whole distance (and reached Fort William together) in a little under 18 hours, Some four years later, in 1989, a clash between two runners, Dave Wallace and Mike Hanley, knocked more than two hours off this time, with Wallace leading Hanley home by a margin of some six minutes. Wallace’s record stood for many years until, in 2013, Paul Giblin knocked 20 minutes off his time, taking it down to a little over 15 hours. The 2015 race starts at Milngavie Rail Station on June 21 at the bracing hour of 1 am! Other races cover only a part of the Way. The Highland Fling covers the 53 miles from Milngavie to Tyndrum. This year’s race is scheduled for April 25. The Caledonian Challenge pits teams against each other in two events: The 24 (24 miles in 12 hours)

Traditional family-run Highland Hotel situated on the Great Glen Way. Close to Loch Ness and the ideal location to base yourself while touring the area. Popular for walking, shooting, fishing and cycling. Ten bedroom en suite accommodation, quality restaurant, bar with a great selection of over 100 malt whiskies, lounge with wood burning stove, therapeutic and remedial massage treatments by appointment. Free WiFi and parking. A warm welcome awaits you. FORT AUGUSTUS, above, lies more or less half way between the start and end of the Great Glen Way, in Fort William and Inverness, and is the ideal stopping place for meals, accommodation and provisions, Lying at the south end of Loch Ness, it was once the terminus for an ambitious rival route from the south to Inverness, in the days of rampant railway competition between the various companies. A branch line ran from Spean Bridge to Fort Ausutus and down to a pier on the loch. The remains of a bridge linking it and indeed of the pier itself can still be seen. Alas, the route was never a success and the line closed long before Dr Beeching wielded his axe, having never commanded anything like a working income. The story of the line is told in The Story of the West Highland, £4.95, available from both Fort William and Inverness station bookstalls – and sometimes in Fort Augustus!
