MEET ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ANGELA TYLER Some of my previous assignments include teaching middle grades science/ social studies, team lead, science chair person, instructional coach and assistant principal. I served on Edgecombe County’s District Leadership team assisting other teachers with planning lessons and developing the district’s quarterly benchmarks. I was an instructional coach for middle grades and for the last two years I served

as an assistant principal for Halifax County Schools. I have been in education for 19 years. I attended North Carolina Wesleyan College where I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Justice Studies and Cambridge College where I obtained a Masters of School Administration. I chose to become an administrator because I wanted to be impactful in the lives

of many more students. I am the voice for the silent scholar who doesn’t know how to express their needs or who has no one to be an advocate for them. I am excited about becoming a Beaver. I look forward to collaborating with the faculty and staff so that all students succeed. I hope that our school will keep the students as the main focus and any decisions made will be to impact student achievement.

Dr. Tremaine Young

Aug. 22 4 to 6 p.m.

MEET PRINCIPAL DR. TREMAINE YOUNG I have worked in the field of K-12 and higher education as a teacher, school counselor, assistant principal, and principal. I served as Principal of Jones Middle School in Jones County, before joining Beaufort County Schools. I have been in the field of education for 17 years. I attended East Carolina University to obtain both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I have obtained my bachelor of arts degree in psychology/biology. I further obtained two masters degrees (masters in counselor education/masters in school administration). I have

also obtained my doctorate degree in educational leadership from ECU. During my initial years as an educator, I observed my principal sitting down in a circle with a group of kindergarteners. I watched her interact with those students as a caring adult and it opened my eyes to the concept of an administrator being actively involved in their student’s daily lives. I initially wanted to become an administrator because I wanted to be more of a change agent. I wanted to continue pushing children in a positive direction and becoming an administrator allowed me to do this on a

more broader level. I am excited about continuing Northeast Elementary School’s efforts to building relationships with every student and providing them with a learning experience which embodies hope, love, accountability, and community. I hope to provide students with the opportunity to uncover their purpose and realize their ambitions. Students will be seen as agents of change and innovators. This year, Northeast Elementary will set high academic and behavioral goals to push our students towards reaching their full potential.

MEET PRINCIPAL BRIANNA WILLIAMS My name is Brianna Williams and this is my 16th year as a public educator. I taught high school science for 11 years (9 years at D.H. Conley High School and 2 years at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School) I coached Varsity Girls Basketball and assisted with JV and Varsity Volleyball. My first position in school administration was at P.S. Jones Middle School. This is my 4th year at Chocowinity Middle School. I served our school and community as the Assistant Principal and in July of this year, I became the Principal, after 16 years in education. Schools Attended: The University of Mount Olive, 2002 Bachelor of Science, Biology East Carolina University, 2004 Master of Arts in Teaching- Secondary Education East Carolina University, 2015 Master of School Administration I thoroughly enjoyed my role as a classroom teacher. After spending 11 years in teaching, I wanted to expand my scope of leadership

to impact and empower other teachers across the school to help students grow and achieve. I was encouraged by a former principal to go back to school for my Master of School Administration degree. I love public education as well as the students, staff, and community that I serve. Teaching is the only profession that impacts all other professions. I truly believe that teachers reach out and touch the future by what they do in the present. I love Beaufort County and am thrilled to be the new Principal at Chocowinity Middle School. Having served as an Assistant Principal at CMS for the past three years, I feel blessed to continue in a leadership capacity at a school that I love. We have made excellent progress over the course of the past 4 years under the leadership of Ms. Kimberly Gibbs. My goal is to continue that climb to success. I want to empower teachers to provide quality instruction in their classrooms and help their students reach their learning goals. We would like to facilitate the growth of our students in reading and continue to support our 5th graders transition to Middle School. Our school is committed to partnering with our families and the community to ensure a safe, respectful environment which inspires excellence and challenges all students to develop their talents as healthy, life-long learnings and responsible citizens.

Getting kids the homework help they need Homework has long been a way to reinforce lessons learned in the classroom and ensure that the learning process continues when students leave school each day. A recent survey of teachers conducted by the University of Phoenix College of Education found that high school teachers assign about 17.5 hours of homework each week (3.5 hours per class), middle school teachers assign about 3.2, and elementary school teachers assign about 2.9 hours per week. Thanks to ever-evolving curriculums and new problem-solving methodologies — particularly in mathematics — parents may no longer have the expertise to help their children with their homework, leading to confusion and frustration. So where does a parent and student turn when homework has become challenging? Students who are struggling should not feel embarrassed about the fact that homework has become an issue. Such students should speak with their parents, teachers or school counselors if they are having difficulty with their homework. Such discussions alert teachers that there are potential issues. Teachers can be important resources because they can give specific advice on assignments or strategies for tackling complex processes. Next up, students and parents can consult with older students who have already “been there, done that” in terms of assignments. Oftentimes high school and college students volunteer their time for community service hours. Ask at the local library or at schools in town if older students offer homework help. Families also can do their best to make the environment at home conducive to homework. Scholastic suggests setting up a schedule that includes a time indicating when assignments must be completed. In addition, setting up a quiet, distraction-free zone for doing homework can help kids concentrate on their assignments. Students can tackle harder assignments first, as they will likely take the bulk of the time, and then move on to the easier assignments. If homework is taking a long time to complete, parents can speak to teachers about when it might be alright to offer youngsters some extra help.
