BBB OFFERS TIPS FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOPPING From Better Business Bureau RALEIGH — While year-round students have already started back to school, a large number of students on the traditional school calendar are getting ready to head back to the classroom, but not before they head to the stores for some back-to-school shopping. Better Business Bureau serving eastern North Carolina offers back-toschool shopping tips so parents can be savvy shoppers when it comes to school supplies. “According to the National Retail Federation, back-to-school spending for students in 2017, in grades ranging from kindergarten to college, is expected to reach $83.6 billion, an increase of more than 10 percent over last year’s $75.8 billion,” said Mallory Wojciechowski, president and CEO of BBB serving eastern N.C. “The costs can add up and it is important for families to plan out their school supply shopping ahead of time in order to maximize their purchases.” To make the most out of your back-toschool shopping, BBB serving eastern N.C. recommends families: XX Make a shopping list. Even if you don’t have a school supply list yet, you can still purchase other items early, such as school clothing, notebooks and backpacks. Make a list for each child and start by “shopping at

home" for items you may have left over from last year. XX Create a budget. Do a quick price search online for the items on your list and add them all up. Be sure to clip coupons, and make note of discount codes and any cash-back or rebate programs. If your goal is to reduce spending, now is the time to decide how much you want to cut. Consumers may want to consider spending a bit more on high-quality products that will last longer and save money in the long run. XX Check for educational discounts. Some computer and software companies offer discounts to students and teachers with .edu email addresses. Some of these can be quite substantial, so check around. XX Buy in bulk. Some schools ask parents to buy items that will be used by the entire class (tissues, hand sanitizer, etc.). Get together with other parents to shop in bulk. Parents of college students can also buy in bulk for snacks, toiletries and other items for future “care packages.” XX Check the refund and exchange policies. Keep your receipts and find out the exchange or return policies for items purchased during this time period. Keep in mind, some items may be non-refundable or have restocking fees associated with them. For more information, visit bbb.org.

BEAUFORT COUNTY SCHOOLS

WELCOME BACK!

As summer draws to a close and our attention shifts back to school, we wanted to take a moment and welcome our students and faculty and staff back. Each school year is unique, and we are excited to discover what will make the 2017-18 school year a year to remember. If you are new to our school system, we welcome you, and if you have been a part of the Beaufort County Schools in the past, we welcome you back. We look ahead to the 2017-18 school year with great anticipation. Our schools have been planning and preparing all summer for your return, and we are anxious to have you on campus. We hope that this school year will be your best school year ever. The experiences that you share, the opportunities that you seize, the relationships that you forge, will all contribute to the quality of the educational experiences you have this year. Our goal is to provide quality educational programs and services to ensure students’ academic and vocational success. To achieve this, we believe that we must all work together. The Beaufort County Schools employees have many roles to serve in achieving our mission, but our students, their family members and our communities are critical to our success as well. Our hope is that with the dawning of a new school year, the level of commitment for all will be great and will be surpassed only by the passion and drive for learning, which will be evident through the actions of all of our stakeholders. As we begin this journey, you are encouraged to communicate with your child’s school. There will be regular communication initiated by the school, with important information, but you are encouraged to initiate communication any time you have a question, concern, or simply a comment or thought that you wish to share. We will communicate face-to-face, as well as through writing, phone calls, our web page and via social media. Our goal is to communicate clearly and quickly so that information is shared in a timely manner. From time to time, there will be a need to alter the school schedule, most often due to weather. We will announce any school schedule changes as early as possible to allow families to plan, but there are times when the weather dictates the timing of school schedule decisions, and we have to accept that. The announcement of school closings or delays will be made through local TV stations as well as the automated phone calls and messages distributed via our web page and social media. The Beaufort County Schools web page can be found at www.beaufort.k12.nc.us. We can also be found on Facebook at Beaufort County Schools NC, and on Twitter @BeaufortCoSchoolsNC. We invite you to find ways to support your child and their school through various forms of support. You may get involved with the school’s parent organization, volunteer to help in a classroom or provide support in some other way. There is nothing more important than spending time daily with your child discussing what they learned at school and assisting them as needed. If we can help you in some way, please let us know. We are grateful to live in a supportive community, and our school system could not do what we do without the awesome support provided by the communities we serve. If you are a member of the community and would like to support the work in our schools, we invite you to partner with us. We have exciting opportunities, such as our CARRE Network, Bright Futures and many other opportunities for you to be involved in the work of our schools and our system. On behalf of the Beaufort County Schools Board of Education and all of our team members, welcome back, and we look forward to working with you to make 2017-18 remarkable in many ways. Dr. Don Phipps Superintendent, Beaufort County Schools

BCS MAKES 2 CHANGES TO DRESS CODE By CAROLINE HUDSON Washington Daily News

Beaufort County Board of Education rolled out two changes to the student dress code for 2017-18. Students will no longer be allowed to wear pants with holes in them. This rule does not apply to accidental tears while a student is wearing the pants, according to Superintendent Dr. Don Phipps. Students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade are now allowed to wear leggings and athletic shorts/pants with an elastic waistband to school. Phipps said these changes came about at the request of school administrators. “The board believes that the dress and personal appearance of students greatly affect their academic performance and their interaction with other students. The board requests that parents outfit their children in clothing that is conducive to learning,” the Beaufort County Schools dress code policy states. Beaufort County Schools tweaks the dress code periodically as the need arises. The Board of Education must vote to approve any changes.

Interesting fact: I was born and raised in Aurora. Although I’ve lived in Washington for over 30 years, I still consider Aurora

my home. I guess you can say that I have made a complete circle. Thoughts moving into 2017-18 school year: I am extremely honored and excited to have the opportunity to be a part of providing the students with a quality education that prepares them (to) be successful at the next level, high school. Together we will take S.W. Snowden Elementary to the next level of greatness.

Interesting fact: When I was in college at Coastal Carolina University, there was no football program. A club football program was started and lasted for two years (1987 and 1988). I was a captain on that team. After those two years, the team disbanded. Then, in the early 2000s, the university decided to start the football program they currently have. During their inaugural season, the school tracked down all the old team members

and brought us back to honor us at halftime of a football game. In the locker room before the game, since I was a captain of the original team, I was asked to give a pre-game speech with both my old team in the locker room, plus the current football team. That was one of the most exciting moments of my life. How often do regular people get to give pregame speeches to college football teams? Thoughts moving into 2017-18 school year: I have met with almost all the staff over the summer and have found that

they truly want to do what is best for kids. They have been very welcoming, excited and open to change. In addition, there is a family feel that exists within the school community. I think that, in order to be successful, I must be able to adapt my leadership style to different situations, support what is currently working, work hard to increase parent and community member involvement, and involve all stakeholders in changing what needs to be changed for the benefit of our students.

WELCOME BACK! Dear Montessori families, It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year! We hope that the summer has afforded you and your family the opportunity to rest, relax and rejuvenate. This summer we again offered an optional work program for our ninthgraders as well as a summer reading camp for our elementary students. Also, we prepared for our first graduating class, class of 2018, which completes the entire educational cycle from Children’s House through 12th grade. In preparation for the new academic year, we reflect on previous years and would like to reemphasize some past

guidelines, which have contributed to student and school success: XX Continue to support your child’s learning by encouraging him/her to inform you and his teacher if he needs additional support in any area or subject. XX Ensure your child’s prompt and daily attendance. XX Remember that our busiest times of the day are drop off and pick up — please do not park vehicles in those loading/ unloading areas per the fire marshal. As a reminder, we are offering an electronic pre-registration and annual registration for your convenience. You can find the registration forms online at the school’s Parent Page at www.wmpcs.

org/parents/. By completing the forms online, you will be free to enjoy open house without filling out paperwork, as well as be able to pick up this year’s complimentary spirit shirt for your student(s). Furthermore, we are offering the shirts for $12 each (to non-students) with all profits helping the high school students’ businesses. The profits from their businesses help fund the high school immersion trips throughout the year. As we complete preparations in these final days before school starts, we recognize that our children need support from both home and school. As we partner together, be assured that we are committed to doing our utmost in

helping all of our children reach their greatest potential. Thank you for all that you do to support the students, school and community. We look forward to a wonderful year challenging our students and helping them grow. As a reminder, open house for our pre-K and kindergarten students and families is Sunday, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; open house for our first- through 12th-grade students will be held Monday, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. With warm regards, Darla Prescott and Austin Smigel Directress of academics/education and Director of administration/finance

Reduce kids’ risk of getting colds at school School-aged kids who catch colds or the flu from their classmates can quickly spread those colds to their family members, who then might spread the colds further when they go to work. Preventing the spread of colds and flu at school is a team effort that requires the assistance of not just parents, but also teachers and students. Still, parents might be the first line of defense when it comes to preventing the spread of cold and flu at school. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 38 million school days are lost to the flu each year. Those lost days can affect students who miss lesson plans, but also affect parents, who often must take days off from work to tend to their sick children. While there’s no way for parents to guarantee their children won’t catch a cold or the flu this school year, they can take various preventive measures to increase kids’ chances of staying healthy and achieving perfect attendance. XX Make sure kids are immunized and that their immunizations are current. Vaccinations bolster kids immune systems. That’s important, as kids’ immune systems are naturally less mature than adults’, making them more vulnerable to germs and viruses. The CDC recommends that adults and children receive their flu vaccinations in October while noting that such vaccinations can be administered as late as January and still prove effective. The CDC also recommends that adults and children receive flu vacci-

nations each year. Additional vaccinations may not need to be administered as often, but parents should still ensure kids are up-to-date with their shots. XX Make sure kids regularly wash their hands. Kids often catch colds by rubbing their hands that have been exposed to cold virus germs on their noses or eyes. To prevent that, parents can teach kids to wash to their hands thoroughly, including scrubbing the backs of their hands, between their fingers and around their fingernails. Kids should know to wash their hands regularly, but especially after they use the bathroom and before they eat, drink or touch their mouths, noses or eyes. XX Keep kids home when they are sick. Parents don’t want their children to miss school, but kids who are suffering from colds or flu should be kept home. This prevents the spread of colds and flu to classmates and teachers, and time to rest at home may help youngsters recover more quickly. XX Teach kids to avoid common germ spots. Germs can be lurking anywhere, but some spots seem to make more welcome homes for germs than others. Studies have shown that kids were most likely to encounter germs in schools on water fountain spigots and on plastic cafeteria trays. Teach kids to never put their mouths on fountains and to avoid eating any food that might fall onto their trays in the cafeteria. School-aged children are susceptible to colds and flu when spending time in the classroom. But parents can reduce their youngsters’ cold and flu risk in various ways.
