WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL Head coach Jon Blank is headed into his third season at the helm for the Washington Pam Pack. After seeing an improvement in year one as head coach, the Pam Pack won four games in each of the last two seasons, as the offense put up some of the best numbers in school history. A large part of this rebuild has been credited to the weight room. After a complete makeover of the workout facility a few years ago, the coaching staff has put an emphasis on getting players in the weight room, and according to the coaches, they’ve put on mass and strength. According to coach Perry Owens, the team has added 22,000-pounds to their lifts in the past few seasons. The Pam Pack has a solid group of offensive lineman this season, as essentially most of them are above 6 feet and wight at least 230 pounds. They will need to open up the running lanes for running backs Jaden Hambric, Mykell Warren and Terry Moore. They’ll be paired with a senior quarterback in Antwone Godley, who had a breakout season for the Pam Pack last fall, and wide receivers very capable of making plays down field. After a couple of seasons in which the Pam Pack was looking to put it all together, they certainly have the parts to be a force to be reckoned with in the 2019 football season.
BY THE NUMBERS
1,458: This is how many total yards starting quarterback Antwone Godley was responsible for last season. 1,129 passing yards and 14 passing touchdowns paired with 329 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. Godley will look to match those numbers with a veteran offensive line this upcoming season.
POSITION BREAKDOWNS QUARTERBACK Antwone Godley comes back as the starter for the Pam Pack looking to match and/or better his numbers from 2018. Godley was responsible for quite a few touchdowns last season with the seventh most points scored in a season in school history. Godley has all the tools around him to make him a successful quarterback with talented running backs, receivers and a big offense line. All these things are a recipe for a successful offense, find out if it comes to fruition starting Aug. 23.
OFFENSIVE LINE The Pam Pack’s offensive line is likely the biggest in the conference. Ben Swinson (Jr.) , Robert Pollock (Jr.), Stephen Hartley (Sr.), Yutaka Bell (Sr.) and Andy Chavez Lopez (Sr.) all stand above 6 feet and weigh at least 230 pounds. A veteran group will lead the offense and teach the younger guys rotating in the ropes as the season progresses. They have been working hard on their footwork and getting their assignments down under offensive coordinator Perry Owens this summer.
TIGHT ENDS This is a relatively important position for the Pam Pack. The tight end gets used in the office for an extra blocker, or he can chip the defensive ends and run out for a route and become a check down for his quarterback. TJ Williams (Jr.) and Messiah Ebron (Soph.) will see time at tight end this season.
RUNNING BACKS The Pam Pack has a steady stable of running back including Jaden Hambric, Terry Moore, Mykell Warren, Walt Gerard, Shavar Clark and Josh White. Hambric was a big part of the junior varsity team’s success in the past two conference championship seasons. Expect Moore, Warren and Hambric to get the majority of the carries on the varsity squad this season. They’re talented backs that have the ability to make plays and break tackles when finding open space.
WIDE RECEIVERS The receiving corps is looking to make a difference this season despite the loss of leading receiver Uriah Lawrence. This season, Isaac Cooper, Xzaivious Moore, Joe’l Gardner, Juan Rosario, Hayden Anderson, Rod Moore and Knowledge Griffin will likely see some snaps at receiver. Despite running the ball on the majority of plays the last couple of seasons, the receivers look to make a huge leap in 2019 with the leadership of senior quarterback Antwone Godley.
DEFENSIVE LINE The Pam Pack defensive line is relatively veteran-heavy as well. Tysheed “Bear” Dixon (Jr.), Zacchaeus White, Sherfield Smith, Rod Moore, Stephen Hartley, Khyric McCloud and Kris Hill will be amongst those seeing the most time at the defensive line positions. Head coach Jon Blank said that his team is a bit complex up front and showcases some different looks to keep opposing offenses guessing.
BEFORE THE SNAP COLORS: Navy, white STADIUM: J.G. “Choppy” Wagner Stadium CONFERENCE: 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference HEAD COACH: Jon Blank (Overall at Washington: 8-15)
LINEBACKERS TJ Williams will anchor down the linebackers in the middle, while Adam Bonner, Walt Gerard, Shavar Clark, Hayden Anderson, Mykell Warren and Isaac Cooper will likely rotate at linebacker this season. As a sophomore, Gerard led the team last year in tackles with 92. Warren also had two interceptions from the linebacker position last year. A somewhat complex defense entails multiple different looks, where linebackers and defensive ends will try a variety of options such as dropping into coverage, into the flats or rushing the quarterback with different blitz packages.
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR: Perry Owens STAFF: Perry Owens (offensive coordinator, QB), Kevin Chapman (OL, JV head coach), Kent Hill (WR), Jeremy Ambrose (TE), Mike Nichols (RB), Jerome Tyson (DT), Alex Heck (OLB, JV defensive coordinator), John Story (DB), Ronnie Woolard (ILB), Dylan Cutler (OL), Sam Crawford (LB), Jeff Mault (athletic trainer). LAST CONFERENCE TITLE: 2015 RETURNING STARTERS: 3 offense, 7 defense PLAYERS TO WATCH: QB Antwone Godley, TE/MLB T.J. Williams, OL/DL Ben Swinson, RB/DB Jaden Hambric, DE/TE Tysheed Dixon.
RISING STAR
Messiah Ebron, a 6 foot 1 inch sophomore that will likely see some time at tight end and potentially some defensive line this fall. Ebron played on JV last year and had some success, look for the youngster to make a name for himself in the next few years to come.
SECONDARY A lot of skill guys on the offensive side of the ball will also likely see time in the secondary. Hambric, Terry and Rod Moore, Gardner, Rosario, Anderson and Delonte Spencer will likely spend some time somewhere in the secondary this season.
SPECIAL TEAMS Washington’s punter, place-kicker and kick-off specialist duties will be held down by sophomore Ridge Zerniak this season. He has shown off his leg in practice a few times and will continue to be the Pam Pack’s kicker moving forward.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR 1. Washington ran for 2,421 yards and 25 touchdowns last year, but the overwhelming majority of that production, Michael Clark, Ka’Ci Foreman, Generyan Parker and Uriah Lawrence all graduated. The Pam Pack will share the ball this year with running backs Jaden Hambric and Mykell Warren, who produced quite a few touchdowns in junior varsity the last couple of seasons. 2. The Pam Pack let up 398 points in 12 games in 2017. In 2018, the Pam Pack defense shaved off over 100 points of scoring from the 2017 season, only allowing 294 points in 2018. The Pam Pack defense will once again look to cut down on points allowed in 2019.

COACH’S CORNER
3. Washington has won the JV conference championship in consecutive seasons. Look for the young guns on the Pam Pack to step up this season after a senior-laden offense moved on after last season. A big offensive line up front will need to be physical this season as they will rely heavily on the triple-option offense, primarily out of shotgun.
“
This group is mentally ready, and that’s a special thing. Our teams in 2013, ’14 and ’15 were really good, but I can’t say they were Week 1 ready in the first week of August. They’re ready.

NORTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL The Northside football team will be an interesting group to watch this season. Firstyear starting quarterback Carter Boyd will trot onto the field for the Panthers with a pretty experienced offensive line, backfield and receivers. Head coach Keith Boyd has been experimenting with his offense this summer adding a few new wrinkles to the playbook that will be interesting to see against their opponents. An important factor this season will be health. While most players will see time on both sides of the football, health and conditioning will be key in the Panthers’ season. Panther players have spent a lot of time in the weight room this off season, and they have gotten bigger and stronger ,according to head coach Keith Boyd. They have a lot of pieces that could lead to them having a successful year as long as they repel the injury bug. Tyler Turner and Tyler Modlin will likely be the anchors to the wide receiver position. Omari Crandell and Zakkai Wilson at fullback/ running back will be a good combination coming out of the backfield, in addition to other split ends and backs rotating in and out of the position. Defensively, the Panthers are looking to create more turnovers than last season, when they forced 16 (1.33 per game) with five interceptions and 11 fumble recoveries. Look for the experience and leadership of the defensive front and secondary to help guide a young linebacker corps in the 2019
BY THE NUMBERS
3: The number of consecutive wins the Northside Panthers began their season with last season. In that stretch, they outscored opponents 114-18. The Panthers will play two of the same three opponents in 2019 as last season, and an 0-11 Camden County team from last season. If the Panthers can start 3-0 again, they put themselves in prime playoff position.
POSITION BREAKDOWNS QUARTERBACK Carter Boyd will be the inevitable starter this year. Boyd has some good arm strength that he’s showcased with accuracy in summer and fall practices. However, it will be interesting to see how he adjusts with some pressure on him from other teams this year. The Panthers have two capable quarterbacks in Samuel Vansant and Keifer Boyd if Carter Boyd were to come out for a play.
OFFENSIVE LINE There will be some new faces on the Panthers offensive line this season. A lot of them saw a good amount of time in JV last year, but senior center Matthew Adams and senior guard Jon’Malik Freeman will help guide them along the way. Will Godley, Fred Taylor, Landon Cahoon, Amarian O’Neil and Braxton Boyd will likely see time on the offensive front this season.
RUNNING BACK There will be a plethora of different backs on this team. With the mixture of split ends/wide backs, full backs and running backs on the team, you never really know who might end up with the ball. Omari Crandell, Payton Woolard, Zakkai Wilson, Jules Moore, Samuel Holland, James Gorham, Mitch Godley and Ben Ridgewell could appear somewhere in the backfield at any given time this season.
WIDE RECEIVER The Panthers have a capable wide receiver corps this season. Look for Tyler Modlin and Tyler Turner be the most targeted receivers with their speed and catching ability. A number of running backs could also potentially be slid out wide or into a slot position as well.
TIGHT END Clark O’Neal, Jeffery Manning, Tyler Harris and Christopher Martin could line up at Tight end this season. A large portion of the Panthers offense will require good blocking skills and finding their way on the field to support the backfield and the quarterback in dishing out the ball to the wide receivers.
DEFENSIVE LINE A good bit of the offensive line will switch sides and play defense for the Panthers. A predominantly upper-classmen group will take most of the snaps on the defensive line. Head coach Keith Boyd says that the defensive line is one of his more experienced groups that he’s excited about, with Zakkai Wilson and Zion Wilson coming off the edge and Clark O’Neal, Amarian O’Neil and Matthew Adams likely in the middle. With a young linebacker corps, the coaches look for the defensive line and defensive backs to help align the young linebackers.
LINEBACKER The linebackers will be the least experienced position group on defense. However, with the way Boyd’s defense works, the linebackers and defensive ends are basically a hybrid position in which players can end up in either position. Mitch Godley, Terry Columbus, Braxton Boyd and Will Godley — three of whom are sophomores — will potentially see some quality time at the linebacker position.
BEFORE THE SNAP COLORS: Black, white, silver STADIUM: Bing Mitchell Stadium CONFERENCE: 1A Coastal Plains HEAD COACH: Keith Boyd (at Northside and overall: 54-95) STAFF: Walt Davis (defensive coordinator, QB, ILB), Jay Mason (RB, CB), Ernie Cornelius (OL, OLB), Jason Adams (OL, DL), Chris Bollow (JV head coach). LAST CONFERENCE TITLE: 1992 RETURNING STARTERS: 2 offense, 5 defense PLAYERS TO WATCH: QB Carter Boyd, DE/FB Zakkai Wilson, OG/DT Jon’malik Freeman, WB/LB Tyler Turner, ILB/TE Clark O’Neal
DEFENSIVE BACKS Speed, depth and experience are the words to describe the Panthers’ secondary. Despite taking some lumps last year due to inexperience, Boyd says that every player that had time in the secondary last year is returning. The only thing it may lack, is height. Look for the corners Tyler Modlin, James Gorham, Noah Manning and Antonio Brooks to get the largest portion of snaps at corner. Samuel Holland, Payton Woolard, Omari Crandell and Jules Moore will see the most time at safety.
SPECIAL TEAMS There will be plenty of players able to sit back to receive kicks this year, but the Panthers are still looking for a kicker to handle field goal, punting and kick-off duties.

Tyler Modlin is a receiver and a corner for the Panthers. He saw the field a bit last year, but the 6-foot junior will look to make a difference this season as the starter, likely on both sides of the ball. Modlin has the length and quickness to be an impact wide receiver, as well as defending the pass on defense.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR
We’re going to try and get out of the box a little bit this year. We’ve been basically a tight formation, pound it and read it, and happy with three yards. We’re going to start spreading our formations a little bit this year and try and throw it 12-15 times a game. We feel like we have the talent to do that this year.
1. When a new quarterback takes the snaps it’s always something to look for. Carter Boyd will be the sure starter standing at 6 feet 4 inches tall. Boyd has the size to be able to see over the offensive lineman and can make the throws if given the time. Northside will go as far as Carter Boyd can take them this year. 2. The defense should be pretty stout. Outside of some young linebackers, the secondary and defensive line’s experience should balance out the defense in a positive manner. 3. The Panthers have a good shot at beginning the season 3-0 again as they faced and defeated the first three teams on their schedule in 2018. Their third game in 2019 comes against a Camden County team that went 0-11 last year. If Northside can begin 3-0, they give themselves a legitimate shot at consecutive playoff appearances.

SOUTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL Southside will be a senior-laden group in 2019. The vast majority of the starters on this year’s team will be juniors and seniors. Seven offensive and defensive linemen are either juniors or seniors, starting quarterback Hundley Stallings is a junior, but the backfield will showcase a wide range of age. Senior Jamari Nelson will lead the group, while juniors Davion Carter, Kaleb Jones Taylor and Jaqwan Cobb will also help mold the young sophomores in Kenjray Coffield, Brandon Clark and Quamari Blount for seasons to come. The Seahawks don’t typically change too much. They will continue to run a base wing-T, as well as a few different formations to keep defenses off-balance. Southside will also have very capable split ends and receivers in Tynahj Smith, Kaleb Wright and Dylan Humbles. Defensively, coach Andre Quinerly runs multiple defenses, meaning their alignments can change from play-to-play. The offensive linemen will likely be seen on the defensive side of the ball as well. Seniors Ricardo Waldron, Daveion McCraw, Iverson Speller, Quinte Peele, Connor Curlings and David Albritton are all above 6 feet with good size, which will likely be one of, if not the biggest, lines in the conference. The Seahawks will definitely have something to play for this year, as senior offensive and defensive lineman Colby Curlings will be sidelined for the season because of a car accident this summer. Many of the players say they are playing for Colby this season.
BY THE NUMBERS
POSITION BREAKDOWNS QUARTERBACK Southside will trot out a new quarterback in junior Hundley Stallings. He has the measurables to be a good quarterback, has good footwork and steps into his throws properly. He attended quite a few quarterback camps in attempt to perfect his craft over the summer and has put on some muscle thanks to the weight room. He has the escapability factor that will be key in buying time for him self to get rid of the football to his athletic receivers and backs.
OFFENSIVE LINE The offensive line is likely as big as anybody they’ll face this season, but there’s not a ton of depth with the same size. The offense is only returning one starter, but many of the players did see time last year, including senior offensive tackle Quinte Peele. Peele will be accompanied on the line by Rolando Cariago, Iverson Speller, David Albritton and Connor Curlings, as well as the 6-foot, 5-inch, 320-pounder in Ricardo Waldron. If the O-line can stay healthy and not get fatigued, they will be successful in the run game again this season.
RUNNING BACK This is the position that the Seahawks usually hang their hat on. After compiling 2,350 yards on the ground last season, running backs Jamari Nelson, Davion Carter, Kenjray Coffield, Jaqwan Cobb, Kaleb Jones Taylor, Quamari Blount and Aeron Wright will likely see time in the backfield or in the slot. There is a lot of speed and athleticism coming out of the backfield this year and the backs are beaming with confidence after many successful summer practices and a good showing at their midnight practice.
WIDE RECEIVER The receivers will help balance out the rushing attack. Last year, the Seahawks only had 543 passing yards. This year, Southside will look to increase those numbers with a very capable receiving corps in Noah Squires, Dylan Humbles, Tynahj Smith, Daveion McCraw, Nick Whitley, Kaleb Wright, Isaiah Grimes and Blount. The Southside coaches trust Stallings’ arm enough to let him toss it a few times a game this season and help open up the running lanes.
TIGHT END The tight end position in a wing-T can be sort of a hybrid position. McCraw will play a good bit of the wing/tight end hybrid position as well as senior Nick Whitley.
2350: The number of rushing yards the Southside Seahawks compiled last season. Three rushers had over 500 yards last season for the Seahawks, which is the balance Carrow likes his rushers to have. Southside will trot out different styles of running backs this season to continue to help that balancing act of different ball carriers getting touches.
BEFORE THE SNAP COLORS: Navy, teal, old gold STADIUM: The Nest CONFERENCE: 1-A Coastal Plains HEAD COACH: Jeff Carrow (at Southside and overall: 47-34) STAFF: Andrea Quinerly (defensive coordinator, assistant head coach), Kam Rouse (RB, JV offensive coordinator), Davelle Whitney (DB’s), David Dixon (LB), Johnny Sullivan (DL), Kenneth Grantham (QB), Stanley Dixon (WR), (athletic directory, stats), Charlie Clark (head manager), Otis Harrell (EMT), Sam Williams (EMT). RETURNING STARTERS: 1 offense, 9 defense
DEFENSIVE LINE Many of the offensive linemen will stay on the field for the defensive line this year for the Seahawks, but they’ll have some depth at the position. Gregory McDonald, Curlings, Carioga, Waldron, Speller and Peele will all see time on the defensive line.
LINEBACKER Southside will have to step up defensively this season, and that usually starts with the linebackers. Shantez Clark led the returning players in 2019 in tackles last season with 62 in his freshman season. Another rising sophomore who made a big splash last year was Keywon Campbell, racking up 48 tackles. Clark and Campbell along with Peele, McCraw, Nelson and Carter will make an impressive linebacker corps.
DEFENSIVE BACK In the defensive backfield this season, the Seahawks will look to run down more than last year’s five interceptions. Coffield led the team with two interceptions in his freshman season. He also tallied 19 tackles last season. Wright, Brandon Clark and Christian Brinkley pulled down an INT each, with Brinkley being the only graduate. Taylor, Cobb and Blount will also likely see time playing in the secondary in 2019.
SPECIAL TEAMS Aeron Wright is likely to be handling the punting duties. But don’t be surprised to see Jamari Nelson or Jonathan Galland back there, either. Galland will be the kick-off specialist, but extra points are yet to be determined. The Seahawks have a plethora of speedy guys who could rotate in returning kicks and punts.
LAST CONFERENCE TITLE: 2005 PLAYERS TO WATCH: RB/DB Jamari Nelson, OL/DL Quinte Peele, QB Hundley Stallings, DB/RB Davion Carter, WR/MLB Daveion McCraw.
RISING STAR
Kenjray Coffield is a sophomore running back on the Seahawks football team. Coach Carrow mentioned that he was the so-called “scat back” of the team. Coffield stands about 5’9, but is very shifty and had some success in junior varsity last season.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR 1. After Will Warren graduated, Hunter Stallings has taken the reins of this offense completely. Warren and Stallings both saw time under center last year, and Stallings has proven he has the arm strength to make the downfield throws and the ability to avoid pressure with his feet. With so much speed coming out of the backfield, look for Stallings to create time for himself in the pocket to dump it off to his backs in space this season. 2. Offensive line depth and size will be a big plus for the Seahawks this season. While experience may be a slight issue, likely the majority of the starters on the line will be seniors with a couple of juniors rotating in. 3. The Southside defense created 26 turnovers last season. 21 fumbles and five interceptions, averaging two forced turnovers per game. If the Seahawks can continue to force turnovers, they have a chance to keep themselves in any ball game they play this season.

We just have to get back to what the expectations for Southside is. Giving back to Seahawk nation, getting back on the winning track like we’re supposed to, good sound discipline football, defensively flying to the ball causing turnovers, and offensively marching the ball down the field and scoring when given the opportunity,

PUNGO CHRISTIAN ACADEMY The Pungo Christian Academy Raiders head into their second varsity 8-man football league season after jump-starting the program last season. Despite finishing 3-5, the Raiders were able to put up quite a few points and would like to at least match those numbers, despite having a small group of players. Senior wide receiver Ryan Bishop returns has the leading receiver and is responsible for the most points from last year’s team. After quarterback Nate Vanstaalduinen decided not to play quarterback this year, the team is looking to sophomore Stephen Pugh and Ian Swindell to potentially take the snaps. Edward “Eddie” Credle will be a big part of the offense this year as a 6-foot junior and will likely play the majority of the time on both sides of the ball. Head coach Stacey Keech said there’s definitely room for improvement and the players are going to need proper conditioning to be able to play all four quarters this season.

COACH’S CORNER
BY THE NUMBERS
We’re getting there, there’s a lot of work that needs to be done, but hopefully with a little more practice, we’ll be ready to go. Our weakest point right now is conditioning. We are working them two practices a day to get them in shape.
— STACEY KEECH
64: The highest amount of points that Pungo scored in a single game last season. They reached 60 points on three different occasions last year, scoring 64 and 62 points against Community Christian and 62 at Lawrence Academy. Hopefully for the Raiders, they can reach those numbers again in 2019.

EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY The East Carolina University Pirates are headed in a new direction in 2019 under first-year head coach Mike Houston. Houston has a very admirable record at his previous coaching stops, bringing a national title to James Madison University in 2016. He looks to continue his success in Greenville. Houston has already been blazing the recruiting trails, on top of adding a former four-star wide receiver recruit from UCLA as a graduate transfer. Quarterback Holton Ahlers will be the undeniable starter in 2019 and the season will ride heavily
upon his shoulders. Houston’s worst offense at James Madison still outclassed any offensive numbers that ECU has put up in recent past. Deondre Farrier and Leroy Henley will likely be the top receivers while Anthony Scott, Trace Christian and Demetrius Murray will help improve an abysmal running game from last year. Defensively, ECU improved after having the worst season in school history in 2017. Outside of losing defensive end Nate Harvey, who won the American Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player
of the Year, the Pirates return pretty much every one else. It’s an experienced group, with seniors Alex Turner and Jalen Price at the defensive tackle spots and Kendall Futrell and Chance Purvis on the ends will be a much-improved defensive line. Junior linebackers Aaron Ramsuer and Bruce Bivens will also help man the middle of the defense. The Pirates still have issues in the secondary after finishing 107th in pass defense last year. Houston will try to turn things around quickly enough to go bowling in year one.
BY THE NUMBERS
37.33: This is the average number of points opponents put up on the East Carolina Pirates last fall. With their offense only averaging 22.75 points scored per game, the Pirates are going to need to flip that script in order to be successful in 2019.
