his time of year, the cold outside can be frightful, which has most eastern North Carolinians dreaming of warmer days to come. Hand in hand with the rising temps comes recreation — getting outside to enjoy the weather and some exercise — and for many, that means being on the water: skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, swimming.

But enjoying the Pamlico has taken on a new form in recent years, that of a board and a paddle, and a workout that makes the most of a leisurely ride on the river: stand-up paddle boarding.

“A lot of people do it for fitness — it’s a great way to get your whole body working. And just like kayaking, there’s a leisure element to it, too,” said Liane Harsh, owner of Inner Banks Outfitters in Washington.

boards for the past several years and what newcomers to the activity find is that the simple act of getting on a paddle board and out on the river is a surprisingly full-body, yet relaxing, workout.

“It’s a workout from your toes to your nose,” Harsh said.

It starts with balance: the muscles of the feet and lower legs working to keep a body standing.

The stance is not quite upright, but it’s not a squat either, so the larger muscles of the legs are working too. Paddling requires rotation from side to side, in addition to the actual paddling action, activating the obliques and the abdominal muscles, as well as the upper body.

“The first time you do it, your main focus is balance. Once you get past the balance part then you focus on paddling. Because if you lose your balance — that’s it. You’re in the drink,” Harsh laughed.

It can take some getting used to, but once a paddler has gotten used to balancing on the board while simultaneously paddling — and steering — on alternate sides, the results are a smooth ride and a gentle workout. For some, working on balance and paddling is plenty of exercise, but for those who want to up the stakes, in the warmer months, Inner Banks Outfitters offers SUP (stand-up paddle board) fitness classes that incorporate other workouts, Harsh said.

“We had a core group of six to 10 people (last year). We’re going to try to grow that this year,” Harsh said.

The classes may involve paddling for a little while, then stopping to do arm, leg or abdominal workouts; they may involve paddling for awhile, then doing yoga postures — it depends on the teacher.

Stand-up paddle boarding is an offshoot of surfing, originating from Hawaii, but in recent years, the sport has caught on across the country, so much so that in 2013, it was named the outdoor sporting activity with the most first-time participants in U.S., according to an Outdoor Industry Association’s report on outdoor recreation participation.

“There’s definitely a growing interest in paddle boarding,” Harsh said. “That was a lot of our business last summer.”

While summer might seem far away right now, in just a few short months water and air temperatures will be rising, as will the call to get outdoors and go.

Perhaps this year might be the year to do something new and different — to get on a board and see the river and a workout in a whole new light.

icture This: The month is October … the weather is starting to get cooler …

Halloween candy lines the shelves at the stores … and who can resist purchasing that first bag of yummy candy? But, you can’t just stop at one bag of candy. You purchase a few more bags the next time you go shopping, and then you enjoy Thanksgiving delights, followed by the tasty treats of the Christmas Holidays. So, by the time the season is over, you decide to step on the scale that you have been avoiding the Dr. Elizabeth Brown past few months. Then after noticing you have packed on a few pounds, you create your New Year’s resolution. What could it be? Yes, to shed those extra pounds!

In the United States 72 percent of Americans make a New Year’s resolution of losing weight.

Unfortunately, 69 percent of Americans fail. The question is how did the 3 percent get it right? The key to losing weight is forming a plan that you can live with. Incorporate your everyday into a new and wellbalanced, healthy way.

A Healthy Kitchen: Start in your kitchen. Open every cabinet and look at what it contains and ask yourself if it is healthy.

You don’t have to throw it away. Just balance it by incorporating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, while eating less of the boxed mac and cheese. Making little changes will increase your rate of success in losing weight and keeping it off. If you are in a hurry and need a healthy snack, switch the high calorie chips with Kelloggs cracker chips, rice cakes, or lightly salted low fat popping corn. Then for the sugar cravings, switch to dark chocolate squares, 100-calorie packs and gum. You can also incorporate a large variety of healthier choices into your daily life to replace the old ones without the feeling of a “starvation-can’t-eat-anything-but-health-foods diet.”

Creating a habit: It takes the average person 21 days to form a habit.

This new year, instead of going to the gym every day for three hours the first few weeks, just to quit because it’s no fun, be more reasonable! Begin by simply making it a habit go to the gym, walk, run, or exercise at home for it least 30 minutes a day. This will be easier to accomplish and will increase your desire to go to the gym and receive further results. In addition, it has also been proven that if you make a habit to go to the gym at the same time every day you are more likely to “stick with it.”

Supplementation: It’s a diet world and supplements are flying off of the shelves every new year for people seeking an easy solution to weight loss. There is no miracle pill.

Be reasonable. The girl or guy on the bottle with those amazing abs, toned arms and legs did not get that way by just taking the pill. They had to go to the gym countless hours to keep their bodies up. It takes about four weeks to build muscle and only one week to lose muscle. It’s not fair. In addition, most diet supplements are filled with ingredients that can be harmful to your body causing heart palpitations, shaking, and much more. However, there are some natural alternatives for those seeking additional supplementation that do not have the harmful effects and can be very beneficial when trying to lose weight.

The New Year is a perfect time to be near and dear to your heart!

I

speak about lifestyle and heart healthy habits on a daily basis when seeing women in my practice. I am looking out for the No.1 killer that sieges the lives of American women each year.

Can you guess what it is? Heart disease. Now is the time to remind women to be hearty healthy. You may see women wearing lots of red during the month of February, so break out your red wardrobe and wear it proudly to raise awareness.

We all heard about the ways to live a healthy life, but have Dr. Marie Rowe we ever learned to how to Greenville actually do it? The culture and women’s clinic lifestyle of an American is fast … fast-paced, fast-food and we certainly are very spoiled in this nation to have most everything at our fingertips … even the remote! Our lifestyle, however, has trade-offs and one unfortunate trade-off is our health. A life without activity, wholesome food and rest leads to obesity, a weakened heart and body and feeling as if you could easily fall flat out. We do not have to accept this as Americans. Heart disease is a preventable killer, but we have to make an effort to stop it in its tracks.

Living heart healthy takes effort and planning, otherwise we are forced to choose what is quickest and easiest which most often is not healthy. So you may be thinking, stop! What is heart disease anyway?

How could something I cannot see take my life? It starts with something called atherosclerosis, which is a hardening of the arteries. An artery is what gives you your pulse that you can easily feel in your neck or wrist. They are all over your body. Atherosclerosis develops when arteries that supply blood to the heart are clogged by plaque buildup from cholesterol. Cho-

lesterol comes from the food we eat. A heart attack happens when an artery is blocked by cholesterol, a roadblock if you can imagine that cuts off the heart’s oxygen supply. When this happen, your heart muscles die and you perceive this as a heart attack.

So how do you know if you are at risk for this killer called heart disease? There are certain factors that increase a person’s risk of heart disease. Some of these risk factors, such as age, cannot be changed. Other factors, such as one’s cholesterol levels, can be changed.

Knowing what your risks are will tell you how much danger you could find yourself confronting one day.

The risk of heart disease is additive, meaning your risk grows as the number of risk factors increases.

A woman’s risk of heart disease is higher if she: • Is aged 55 years or older • Has a family history of heart disease or heart attack • Has a high total cholesterol or high LDL level • Has high blood pressure • Smokes cigarettes • Does not exercise regularly • Is obese • Has diabetes • Having an apple-shaped physique versus pearshape There is a time in a woman’s life where she is in most danger of heart disease in my opinion — menopause.

Estrogen protects our ovaries and bones up until about age 50 and therefore it is unusual to have an issue in this area prior to reaching menopause. This is why we see heart disease earlier in men than women … thanks to our ovaries! Well, sadly time catches up with us.

The rate of heart disease increases with age and after menopause. Some women who have reached menopause have used hormone therapy (HT) to protect

against heart disease. Today, HT is no longer recommended for this protection. Hormones are good and safe for reasons like hot flashes, night sweats or vaginal dryness, but it does not prevent heart disease. Talk with your doctor about HT and menopause. He or she can advise you about the benefits and risks for you.

Bottom line, ladies, I challenge you to take charge of your health and live your lives daily in a heart healthy way. We are not perfect and life happens. Try to be as good to your bodies in the best way you can.

The first step should be assuring regular exercise. I personally have to get up and exercise before I start my day. I do this so that nothing stands in the way and no excuses to be made.

Choose your exercise regimen and stick to it as diligently as you do your family and work. It is a non-negotiable part of your life. Think of it as a must to stay strong and be around for your family and friends as long as you can. If you do not know where to start, talk with your healthcare provider to sort out how you can make it work. If you do not have someone, find one. We are all happy to help in any way.

Make morning workouts work for you

M

any men and women struggle to find time to exercise. If hectic schedules dominated by professional and personal commitments have made it difficult to make exercise part of your daily routine, you might want to consider skipping the snooze button so you can work out in the early morning hours.

Early morning workouts have their ups and downs.

Glucose levels in the body tend to be low in the morning, when many people wake up with a relatively empty stomach. Low blood glucose levels can cause feelings of nausea and weakness and possibly make you feel faint. In addition, since you likely aren’t moving much while you’re asleep, your joints and muscles are likely less mobile early in the morning than they are in the evening, which can make morning workouts difficult and, if you don’t allow yourself more time to warm up, put your body at greater risk of injury. But morning workouts also can energize you throughout the day and many people find it easier to consistently exercise in the early mornings than at night, when distractions or long days at the office can affect your motivation to workout.

Early morning exercise routines can be difficult to adjust to, but there are some ways to make the adjustment to such regimens go more smoothly.

• Make sleep a priority. Prioritizing sleep makes it easier to get out of bed in the morning, when you will face the daily temptation to hit the snooze button and roll over. But if you aren’t sleep deprived, you will find it easier to skip the snooze phase of your morning routine and get right out of bed. Skip the late night talk shows and call it a night earlier, making sure you get between seven and eight hours of sleep each night. Once you establish a new sleep schedule, you will find it easier and easier to get up and hit the gym in the morning.

• Designate more time to warm up. Early morning workout routines require athletes to warm up more

than they would when exercising at other times of the day. As previously noted, your body is perhaps at its least mobile right when you get out of bed, so set aside more time to warm up when you workout in the mornings. Five to 10 minutes of light cardiovascular exercise before you begin your workout can be enough to increase your body temperature and loosen your body up so it’s ready for exercise.

• Don’t go it alone. The buddy system is effective for many people regardless of when they exercise, but it can be especially beneficial for men and women who want to start working out in the morning. If someone is waiting for you at the gym or if your significant other is up and ready to go, you’re far less likely to skip a morning workout than you would be if you are going it alone.

• Eat at your own discretion. Some people simply cannot eat before a workout, while others find working out on an empty stomach makes them faint and weak. The problem many people who work out in the early morning encounter with regard to eating before their workouts is they simply don’t have the time to eat and afford their body enough time to turn that meal

or snack into fuel that will benefit their workout. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that eating a meal 45 minutes before a moderateintensity workout enhances exercise capability. But morning exercise enthusiasts typically find they do not have that spare 45 minutes to wait around while their bodies absorb a meal. Eating healthy before exercise, and giving your body adequate time to absorb that meal, can definitely fuel your workout. But if that 45 minutes ultimately compromises your ability to workout, you may want to have a glass of orange juice or a drink that contains carbohydrates so your body has some fuel as you exercise.

Many adults find that mornings are the only times they can consistently exercise. Adjusting to such a rou-

A

New Year has arrived, and though many resolutions may have fallen by the wayside, there are some resolution makers that have stuck with it.

Although the pledge made by one local woman wasn’t one made on New Year’s, 33-year-old Angela Harne vowed to get healthy last year. Today, a year later, she has more than halfway reached her goal and, in the process, created a lifestyle that has given her a new beginning.

On Dec. 13, 2013, it finally clicked for Harne — she decided to get healthy. Having been an athlete at her Olney, Md., high school, Harne says she enrolled at East Carolina University and, over the years, gained weight, developed unhealthy eating habits and didn’t enter a gym, leaving her at an unhealthy weight. But upon making her pledge, she got down to business after visiting family in Florida that holiday season, not only having

swam a few laps in her aunt’s pool, but also joining her father and brother at the gym.

After returning home, she looked into one of most valuable resources in the community pertaining to health and fitness — Vidant Wellness Center. She became a member, gaining access to some of the latest exercise technology, including a full line of cardiovascular training equipment like treadmills, elliptical trainers, upright and recumbent stationary bicycles and steppers, and has turned her health around completely. She also had assorted free weights, exercise benches, stability balls and medicine balls, as well as weight-training equipment for full-body strength training, at her disposal.

“When I came back, I heard about Vidant, and I knew they had a pool, and I like to swim,” Harne said. “I kept coming back and I joined the gym a couple days later.”

Harne says she was introduced to the gym by Mike Hayes, a personal trainer, and after undergoing a brief fitness test, she was cleared as healthy enough for

exercise. Harne started out by swimming 30 minutes per day, doing the elliptical each day for 20 to 30 minutes and using other exercises and workouts to get going. Now, she works out two and a half hours a day on weekdays, and on weekends, she’s in the gym three to four hours a day, Harne says. Hayes comments on Harne’s work and her progress since its inception as being consistent and momentous, leading to her hardearned success.

“The key to progress, any progress at all, in this endeavor is consistency,” Hayes said. “We provide an environment that is accepting and positive. What Angela got ahold of is that consistency that led to some progress that you get on that good cycle — it’s momentum. It’s literally putting one foot in the front of the other in the right direction. I’m thrilled for her.

She has done phenomenal work. And she’s got more work to do. And we’re here for her. That’s the best part about it. It’s a great, great story. I’m just glad to witness it.”

Gradually taking on more and more and becoming more able to expand her workouts, she joined classes this past summer offered at the center like step aerobics, which includes the use of kettle bells, lunges and weights, and this fall, she took on spin cycling classes. Harne even participated in what are called boot camps, a month-long, three-day-a-week class, involving grueling workouts. Now, in her second boot camp, Harne says the workout is much easier than the first, proof that she is making progress toward reaching her goal.

Since first starting her workout, Harne says she has lost 116 pounds and hopes to lose 92 more by January 2016, meaning she will have met a life-changing goal.

And her advice to others pondering the idea of whether to get healthy and in shape is simple: take the first step and do it.

“To people out there who are thinking about getting healthy, anyone can tell you, you can do it,” Harne said.

“I used to say I didn’t have time to work out. Take your

What is the difference between 2D and the new 3D mammography?

2D mammography (the typical mammogram offered at most places) uses a single picture of each breast at 2 different angles. All of the breast tissue is seen in the same image so it is possible for abnormalities to escape detection because they are “hiding” behind other tissue. On the other hand, there are many times when normal tissues can appear to look like an abnormality. 3D mammography takes multiple low-radiation mammograms at multiple (9-15) different angles and then a computer creates many (60 per view) very thin image “slices” which can eliminate many of the problems seen with overlapping tissues.

Who should get 3D mammography?

While the greatest benefit of 3D mammography will be to those with dense breasts, women with fatty breast tissue can also benefit. At Carolina Breast Imaging Specialists, all patients receive 3D mammography.

As of this writing we have performed over 500 3D mammograms and the results have exceeded our wildest expectations. We have seen our already very low “recall (false positive) rate” drop by over 15 percent, which means very few women have needed to come back for additional imaging after screening.

In addition, our cancer detection rate has increased dramatically where we have found many very small breast cancers that simply could not be seen on 2D images. Much to our surprise, we have even found several abnormalities in completely fatty breasts.
