WDN Readers’ Choice Awards offers something new In a first-ever effort for Beaufort County newspaper readers, the Washington Daily News has asked our readers for their opinions about businesses in our area. From Favorite Cheese Biscuit to Favorite Plumber, Favorite Night Spot to Favorite Auto Dealership, the readers have made their choices and helped us narrow the field to the top five in each category.

The process started on May 15, with the publication of the print and online ballots, seeking nominees in 144 subcategories of business. The overall categories were Food and Beverage, Professionals, Services, Education, Transportation, Shopping and a special category called Brags. The Brags category features local favorites, from Cleanest Restroom to Favorite Waterfront.

All readers who submitted nominees were entered into a drawing for either a $100, $50 or $25 gas gift card, provided by Sheetz. The winners of the gift cards in the first round are Brooke Newman of Washington, $100, Patricia Walter of Belhaven, $50 and Amy Emanuel of Washington, $25.

With the publication of this section, which allows the businesses to say thank you to the readers for their nominations and encourage votes for them in the final round, we enter another round of voting.

From today until Aug. 24, you will be able to submit the enclosed print ballot. There will be one print ballot per person allowed into the contest. You can also go online to www.TheWashingtonDailyNews.com and vote for your favorites in every category. Online, you will have the opportunity to vote once per day through the end of the contest.

social hour starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are available to the public and are available for purchase at the Washington Daily News office, online through our Facebook page and on www.TheWashingtonDailyNews.com.

Finally, a special section will publish Sept. 24, recapping the event evening and naming the award winners.

“This is a fun way for our local businesses and leaders to interact with our readers,” said Carol Crittendon, advertising director at the Washington Daily News.

“While it is the first time that we’ve done this, we hope that local businesses are proud to tell their customers that they are winners,” she added.

While this type of contest has been done in many other markets, it is a first for Beaufort County newspaper readers. The entire process has been sponsored

by Tidelands EMC and the two rounds of gas gift cards were sponsored by Sheetz’ Washington store.

Publisher Ashley Vansant said of the contest, “It’s a fun opportunity for readers to share their local favorites and help them get recognized for the good things they do. Businesses have the opportunity to encourage their customers to vote for them and earn top recognition.”
