WELCOME FROM THE LIBRARIAN With cooler mornings and cosier nights approaching, autumn means shorter days, browning leaves, and as always, plenty happening at Western Downs Libraries! We have an egg-stravaganza of Easter activities for the juniors this April school holidays, including egg-cellent arts, craft and photography; egg-ceptional scavenger hunts; and a special egg-gineering challenge in Chinchilla.* *I know my Easter puns are egg-straordinarily bad, but I hope they made you crack up!

MORE THAN BOOKS | AUTUMN 2022

We're also launching Eagle Readers this season, which is a three-month program for young children to improve their reading skills and encourage a love of literacy from an early age. To celebrate completing the challenge, we'll be throwing a special party for all of our eagles and eaglets — and it's one soiree you'll want to be invited to! For more information, please ask your librarian. Teens don't miss out this autumn either, with drama and film-making workshops on offer to release your inner creative. Make sure to book your place now, as spots will fill up fast.

We've been busy outside of the four walls of our libraries too, with brand new Story Walks in the Chinchilla Botanic Parkland, Tara Lagoon and Myall Creek Parklands in Dalby. Featuring titles from the Stories of Little Queenslander series, our Story Walks are designed to build children's interest in reading while encouraging healthy outdoor activity for little ones and their grown-ups alike. Pack your walking shoes and a hat and take time this autumn to discover where our walks will take you. Finally, our Jandowae librarians Maree, Karel and Violy take the spotlight in our Get To Know Your Local Library feature on page 11. With 42 years of service shared between them, it's safe to say that our Jandowae branch (and the wonderful ladies in it) is at the heart of the community.

It's an organic-based events calendar for our adult programs this season, with herbal and floral tea workshops, beeswax wraps, and the return of the ever-popular kokedama class. We're also thrilled to welcome founder of the Low Tox Movement, Alexx Stuart, to our branches to share her secrets for how to live a healthier, mindful and more fulfilled life. Her books, Low Tox Life and Low Tox Life Food are a must-read and are available to reserve now.

Hoping to see you in our branches soon. CHRIS BERMINGHAM LIBRARY SERVICES COORDINATOR 1

NEW & NOTEWORTHY THE TORRENT BY DINUKA MCKENZIE A loving husband lost to devastating summer floods. A teenage girl injured during a robbery. Two seemingly unconnected cases that will push a detective to the brink. In northern New South Wales, heavily pregnant and a week away from maternity leave, Detective Sergeant Kate Miles is exhausted and counting down the days.

MORE THAN BOOKS | AUTUMN 2022

MOONLIGHT AND THE PEARLER'S DAUGHTER BY LIZZIE POOK Western Australia, 1886. As the pearling ships return to Bannon Bay after a long diving season, twenty-year-old Eliza Brightwell nervously awaits the arrival of her father's boat. But when his lugger finally limps in, it brings with it a tale of tragedy - Charles Brightwell, master pearler, has gone missing at sea. MURDER MOST FANCY BY KELLIE MCCOURT Home for just 48 hours, Aussie billion-heiress has already committed two (completely understandable) felonies, reignited a childhood feud, been (possibly) humiliated (again) by her first love, and fallen over a nameless homeless dead man. All while strolling in her grandmother's garden... THE LAST BOY (DVD) Something has happened and most of humanity has disappeared. At the same time a lethal wind has come into the world and is taking those that remain. The world at an end, a dying mother sends her young son on a journey to the place that grants wishes and will keep him safe. JOIN A BOOKCLUB NEAR YOU! VISIT:

STAF F LOVE! THE NOISE BY JAMES PATTERSON

Two sisters are checking rabbit traps in the Pacific Northwest US, when they are suddenly overcome by a strange vibration in the forest – building until almost deafening. Out of nowhere, their father picks them up and drops them through a trapdoor into a storm cellar, but the noise just gets louder. Much later when they eventually emerge, their world has changed forever. This book is totally different from all the other James Patterson books I have read and will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page. – Chris, Chinchilla Library.

THE MONARCHS BY KASS MORGAN (YA) The ultra-exclusive Kappa Rho Nu - the Ravens - are determined to restore balance to the world. After destroying an ancient talisman and barely saving their sorority in the process, they'll go to any lengths to keep their secret as Westerly's most powerful coven of witches. SNOWY MOUNTAINS CATTLEMAN BY ALISSA CALLEN Rowen Parker never used to think twice about taking risks – until his love for a woman blinded him to all common sense. Now, there's no room in his life for further mistakes. But when he meets the beautiful but reserved new owner of the historic mansion he's been hired to rebuild, he realises his best-laid plans have run amuck. LOW TOX LIFE FOOD BY ALEXX STUART Low Tox Life Food is packed with inspiration and stories from regenerative farmers, checklists for what to ask about the produce you buy, ways to afford better choices - as well as 80 of Alexx's most requested recipes for budget-friendly, easily adaptable meals without waste. 10

GET TO KNOW YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY

JANDOWAE LIBRARY Jandowae Library is a modern community space where people can meet for community meetings, to relax and enjoy a book, read the latest newspaper and to access the public computers. The Jandowae community has come to love many and varied lifestyle sessions offered at their library. These have included Paint Pour, De Pot Man, Mosaics, Button Art, Polymer Clay Earrings and Macrame, just to name a few. Jandowae Library is staffed by Karel, Violy and Maree. Collectively, the three staff share 42 years of service. Wow, it must be great place to work!

WHAT MAKES JANDOWAE LIBRARY DIFFERENT?

Jandowae Library is unique in the way that it provides a one-stop-shop for many government services, not just library services. It also provides QLD Government Agency services, Council customer service and local tourist information services. Although we are one of the smaller libraries in the Western Downs, we are still able to provide our borrowers with new release books and a collection that is regularly rotated.

WHY DO YOU LOVE YOUR JOB?

Mostly because I love helping the people in my community, so to be able to do this in such a lovely space makes my days very enjoyable. I particularly enjoy seeing our Seniors discover the basic ways that technology can enhance their lives. - Karel

I enjoy working with people and helping them find the information they need. I am a people-oriented person and the Library is a place where community can connect. Working in a library means that you’ll be learning a lot. There are many new technologies that are being integrated into the job and that we offer for our patrons. - Violy

JANDOWAE LIBRARY LOVERS

"The library is a safe place to hang out. The self-help section has helped me with some questions that no-one talks about and I wouldn't know who to ask."

It's the people that make it a really great job. The variety is absolutely the best. I can be telling someone where to go (Tourist Info), recommending a book, registering a dog, measuring a vehicle and taking a clients will instructions – all in the one morning. - Maree

"The Jandowae Library is a valuable hub within our community for all who love literature, enjoy art & craft, have a thirst for knowledge, want to meet people with similar interests and so much more. The friendly and helpful staff always greet members and visitors with a smile and a willingness to listen, assist with enquiries, make meaningful suggestions and oblige with requests where possible – Nothing is too much! The workshops they have provided for members of our community and that I have been lucky enough to attend, have been well organised allowing for all attendees to learn new skills in a fun and pleasant atmosphere. No matter your age, you will always leave the Jandowae Library feeling satisfied."

COLLECTION RECOMMENDATION

I have always loved reading, as reading educates, entertains, and informs. My choice is reading biographies, autobiographies and memoirs because they provide the most valuable lessons in life. People who write their biographies usually have an interesting story to tell about their trials and tribulations of their own lives. Reading about someone from a different background, era or totally different set of life experience gives you a new perspective in life. I have read quite a few biographies of famous people, it gives you a glimpse of their life, mind and "knowing" them. In our Library, we have a good collection of biographies and memoirs that you can borrow and take home for your reading pleasures. I am confident that you will enjoy reading them! - Violy 12

THE TECH DEN Our libraries offer many different types of technology products and services for our members to explore and enjoy. From the cutting edge tech available in our Makerspaces to Virtual Reality kits and STEM Workshops, there's something to tickle the fancy of every technoid.

3D PRINTING

Unleash your creativity and bring your creations to life with our 3D printers.

Easy to read information on how to use the software and devices is always available, as well as staff on site who are happy to assist with any enquiries.

FIRST 5 FOREVER

Encourage your child to think of their own rhyming words – this allows them to get creative and also explore sounds as the words are spoken.

Never underestimate the value of the good old nursery rhymes!

MORE THAN BOOKS | AUTUMN 2022

You are the most important teacher in your child's life, and they love to hear your singing voice! Sharing songs or nursery rhymes with your child encourages their abilities to predict language patterns through repetition. These moments of singing rhymes will encourage your child's abilities to communicate socially and really assist them in learning to read. Making your own rhymes in conversation at anytime during the day or night (for example, 'let's pat the cat' or 'see the bee in the tree') or making a funny poem can spark your child's imagination and can be such a fun way to learn.

JOIN A STORYTIME NEAR YOU! VISIT

WESTERNDOWNSLIBRARIES.COM/STORYTIME

Nursery rhymes have patterns, which help children memorise and recall. Rhymes that involve movement (for example 'Incy Wincy Spider' and 'My Little Teapot') can assist with a child's coordination along with learning the words. Rhyming can be used anywhere and at any time and is the most transferable form of play.

Why singing and rhyming is so important for children: • Introduces new words and builds vocabulary • Develops non-verbal communication skills • Supports understanding of how words are formed • Encourages a child to copy actions • Creates opportunities to become more confident in their learning • Introduces children to different beats, rythms, pitches and sounds.

You are your child's most important teacher. It's never too early to read, talk, sing and play - any time, any day! Tips: • • • •

Be confident Sing the songs and rhymes slowly Use props to support the songs and rhymes Use actions to involve the children as well

TREVOR'S BOOKSHELF Trevor the library dog has chosen to share with you the National Simultaneous Storytime 2022 book!

FAMILY TREE BY JOSH PYKE

It started with a seed, and that seed was me. And, over time, laughter filled my garden... A heartfelt celebration of family, community and the seasons of life to cherish and share.

WHAT IS NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME?

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by Australians is read simultaneously in libraries, schools and homes all over the country. Take part in #NSS2022 on Wednesday 25 May! Visit westerndownslibraries.com, or your local library for more information
