November 2008 • Volume 15 - Issue 11

This month, in our Real New England section, we have the honor and privilege of introducing a wonderful couple... the Eagens. I say honor and privilege because they have opened up their lives and hearts to us and allowed us to share in their special day. I have known Tara Delskey for over 15 years and have not only valued her knowledge and reputation in the wedding industry, but have enjoyed the personal company of her friendship over the years. Tara and Ken’s wedding pulled together many wonderful wedding professionals, all putting their expertise to work to give them exactly the feel they wanted for their wedding. This is something every bride and groom strives for... and I got to witness this first hand... and it was beautiful. I want to thank them for allowing us to be such a wonderful part of their special day. In this issue you’ll also find information on the upcoming Western New England Fall Bridal Show on Sunday, November 23rd at the MassMutual Center. Don’t miss the Early Bird Gown Sale starting at 10:30am with all bridal gowns just $199! dding! Watch for our upcoming ally enjoying a we ofessionals actu pr g in dd we ea Ar “Going Green” promotion. Ask Rose Eileen

A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, My parents are paying for our wedding, but we want something different from their vision. How do we compromise? I hate their ideas and the guest list is out of control... HELP! Lauren K, from Enfield, CT Dear Lauren, You are going to have to have a meeting. Begin with expressing your gratitude that they want to pay for your wedding. Then discuss your vision and what you want. Allow them to tell you what they expect and then compromise in the middle. If you wanted a smaller, more intimate wedding with 50 guests and they expected to invite the neighbors with a guest list of 200, you’ll have to set something in the middle that makes you both happy. If this fails and a compromise can’t be met, expect to pay for the items you want to have or for the wedding completely. Dear Rose Eileen, How do we choose bridesmaids’ attire? We know what color we want and I know what I would like to see them in, but we’re already having issues with a few not liking the dress I’ve picked. How do I fix this without going nuts? Chris by email Dear Chris, You know the color you want, but maybe you can narrow down the dress style to a few choices. Many designers offer different necklines and sleeve choices all in the same fabric and color. Let the girls decide what feels best for them while keeping with your color choice. You can compliment them all with the same necklace or earrings that you can give them as a gift!

Dear Rose Eileen, My mother is doing the table numbers on some decorative paper, but rather than have regular numbers, I’m looking for different ways to number our tables. Any suggestions that would go over easily on my mother? Laurie from Springfield, MA Dear Laurie, If you have a theme, incorporate it and let your imagination go. If you have a garden theme, name each table after a flower, such as tulip, rose, sunflower and so on. If you like the beach or ocean, name each table after a beach or type of sea life, such as starfish, shark, or lobster. If you love candy, name each table after a candy bar... and don’t be afraid to spread some mini wrapped candy or bowl of candy on the table to match the name. We’ve recently seen one with numbers that match the ages of the photos of the bride and groom spread on the tables. So table two had photos of the bride and groom at age two and so on. It was a nice conversation piece for the guests at the table. Dear Rose Eileen, When is a good time to schedule a rehearsal? Can we do it a few days before or is the night before still the traditional thing? Karen from Agawam, MA

Dear Karen, Time was you should do it the day before the wedding, but many couples are planning their rehearsal up to a week before the wedding. I would think it would depend on convenience of your wedding party. Are they in town or out of town and when will they be arriving?

Do you have a question about planning your wedding? Rose Eileen invites you to submit any questions about wedding planning by mail or email. Rose Eileen and the advertisers of the Wedding Day Sourcebook will do their utmost to answer them. Send Your Questions About Weddings To: “Dear Rose Eileen”, c/o The Wedding Day Sourcebook P.O. Using Theatrical Lighting To Personalize Your Wedding by Jim Powers CJC Event Lighting We’ve all seen those ultimate wedding shows. You know the ones where the budget just makes you blink a couple times. A common theme in most of those high end weddings is the use of theatrical lighting to create a mood in the venue. Once only reserved for the “platinum wedding” crowd, Theatrical lighting can enhance any event for almost any budget. The right lighting will create the right atmosphere and when it’s done well, lighting can make everything, including your flowers, cake, and guests, look better. Lighting can transform a venue. You can take an old church hall or a dated banquet room and completely transform it into a very high end looking room. Simple lighting solutions can be quite affordable. If you’re planning an evening reception, make sure to visit your site at least once when it’s dark outside. Look around the room and see where the fixed lighting is focused. Lights that illuminate the walls, windows, and ceiling can draw attention away from the center of the room. You want to keep everyone’s eyes on the tables, dance floor, and each other. Ask if the site has dimmers for their overhead lights, and if there’s any florescent lighting at all, keep it

turned off! Also, make sure there won’t be any service doors kept open, which could flood the space with light and ruin the effect. You’ll also need to discuss how much electricity your lighting designer is going to need. Your band or DJ will have to have an isolated power source and won’t want to risk tripping a circuit breaker. In order to express your desires to your lighting professional, You’ll need to know a couple terms which will help to let the designer know what you want. A Pin Spot is a fixture that provides a focused beam of light to illuminate an object like a centerpiece or wedding cake. A Color Wash is basically a blanket of colored light covering an entire area. This can be accomplished with Uplighting. Uplighting is when there are fixtures placed on the floor shooting up on to the wall. Several different types of fixtures can be used to accomplish this effect. Your lighting professional will recommend the right fixture by taking into account power requirements and the type of color saturation desired. Gobo projections can include the couple’s monogram or an

abstract texture pattern to add interest to a plain wall or ceiling. When using color, it is very easy to make your room look... um... tacky. You don’t want it to look like a high school dance or a rave (not until later on maybe when the DJ or band lights kick in). Use just one or two colors to set the mood. Usually a safe bet is a soft pink or a Magenta. Your lighting professional will recommend a color based on the venue and the colors being used in your wedding. We’ve done more than a few weddings where just white light was used and it looked phenomenal. Whatever you decide, Theatrical Lighting can be an affordable way to set the mood for your event.

Jim Powers is the owner of CJC Event Lighting in West Springfield, MA. CJC Event Lighting has created elegant lighting for ceremony and reception venues in Western Massachusetts, Southern Connecticut, Boston and New York, and specialize in affordable full service lighting for weddings. They are fully insured and have a large inventory of professional, high quality lighting equipment. The owners have been involved in the wedding industry since 1984. Take a Bow Western Mass. Couple Stages a Whimsical Wedding Day By Jaclyn C. Stevenson A blend of old and new, some interesting twists on time-tested traditions, and a little bit of whimsy – this is how Ken Eagen and Tara Delskey-Eagen envisioned their wedding. With a little Yankee ingenuity and plenty of imagination, the couple was able to achieve all of this on their big day – but even they couldn’t have imagined how every little detail would come together, creating a multi-faceted celebration of life, love, fun, and the hidden beauty of a Western Mass. city. Tara is no stranger to the wedding world. She’s the manager of Bancroft Bridals in Agawam, a full-service bridal salon. As such, she’s privy to the latest trends in wedding planning before most, and has dozens of long-standing relationships in the wedding industry. “I’ve been part of this industry for 20 years,” she said. “That was one reason why we wanted to plan something different and unique; I’ve seen so many different ideas over the years. But really, we just wanted to have a great celebration with family and friends, and I knew I could use my experience and contacts to help achieve that.” Like many brides and grooms today, the duo also wanted their wedding to reflect themselves as individuals and as a couple, and to have a breezy, welcoming feel. This is where the idea of a ‘new meets old’ began; Ken and Tara said they wanted a traditional church ceremony to honor their roots, but a reception with a measure of zing and irreverence. They wanted guests of all ages to feel free to let loose, but in an elegant environment. Drawing on the expertise of several friends and colleagues in the industry, the couple set to work designing their perfect wedding. Their ceremony was held in St. Michaels Cathedral in Springfield; attendants as well as the couple’s many nieces and nephews dressed in formal, black-tie attire, and Tara donned one of two dresses she’d wear that evening – an elegant, one-shoulder white gown that was custom-designed for her by couturier Mon Cheri. “Having a traditional, Catholic ceremony was important to us, and the gown matched the beauty of the church perfectly,” she said.

Following the ceremony, the newly married couple and scores of family posed for photos on the steps of St. Michaels, and within the Springfield Quadrangle and its suite of museums, which sit adjacent to the church. Some of the images captured were soft, quiet, and traditional, but others hinted at the oneof-a-kind reception to follow; Tara and Ken posed on the steps of the George Walter Vincent Smith Museum of Art not far from a smiling Buddha, and later, along with the children of their extended families in the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden, leaning on the big elephant Horton as the Grinch looked on with a grin that seemed, somehow, less menacing than usual. The evolution of the evening continued as the wedding party made its way to yet another Springfield landmark, this one a newer part of the city’s architectural landscape. City Stage, a performance hall festooned with bright colors and modern amenities, was transformed into a chic venue for dinner and dancing, complete with theater-grade lighting provided by CJC Event Lighting of West Springfield, and floral centerpieces by Durocher Florist in West Springfield, arranged in oversized martini glasses and designed to reflect City Stage’s bright orange, fuschia, and purple décor. Using the actors’ dressing room, Tara shed her traditional wedding gown for her second dress, more fitting of the surroundings – a bit sexier and more fun, with spaghetti straps and plenty of sparkle. Then, Ken and Tara entered City Stage via a cascading set of stairs, as guests waited below with cheers, smiles, and toasts. Dinner and dancing followed, highlighted by gourmet sushi and hors d’oeuvres stations and a video presentation honoring the couple and their families. “It was such a great party,” Tara remembers. “We drank champagne when we came in, and we laughed and sang all night long.” The ambiance alone may have been enough to keep their guests talking about the occasion for weeks, she said, but Ken and Tara had another surprise in store – an entire room devoted to dessert,

designed to resemble a life-sized version of the board game Candyland. “We opened the doors to the room and everyone, especially the kids, just stared at everything with their eyes wide open,” said Tara. “It was a fantastic surprise and also a great way to involve our families in the planning process; my Maid of Honor made cookies and my mother-in-law provided these fantastic homemade breads that she makes. We all had a hand in putting everything together, from Gumdrop Mountain to the Magic Lake.” There were treats especially for children – buckets of candy and sweets from several area bakeries among them – and some for the young at heart, too, including signature martinis and a tree festooned with tiny bottles of Jack Daniels. While the planning that went into the evening ensured a fabulous experience, Tara noted that some of the more spontaneous moments of the night were just as special. Her brother-in-law, Bill Eagen, serenaded the couple with both original and Irish tunes with his guitar, and later everyone in attendance joined in to sing along, swaying and clapping to the music. Those precious, irreplaceable exchanges with family are what Tara said she will remember most about the day – the boisterous laughs and the tender tears. “Having my dad there was probably the most important thing for me,” she said, explaining that after a bout with cancer, her father set his sights on walking his daughter down the aisle, and eight years later, was on hand with his dapper tuxedo and impeccably groomed mustache to do just that. “Even though I’ve been in the industry so long, things like that truly made me understand my clients more, and why little things are so important to a bride,” said Tara. “Even though the planning can be stressful and there is a lot to manage and juggle, there was such a great energy on my wedding day, and I’ll never forget that.” Jaclyn Stevenson is a freelance writer based in Massachusetts.

Tips for a low-stress wedding from Tara Delskey-Eagen: • If you can, plan your rehearsal dinner a week in advance instead of the night before • Have hair and make-up done at a family home with attendants, to spend quality time together • Plan the honeymoon for later in the year during off-peak travel times • The wedding gown a bride is most likely to choose? Tara says it’s the one she can’t stop touching in the dressing room.

Getting The Most Out Of Attending Bridal Shows By Lisa Powers, CJC Events If a wedding is in your future, attending a bridal show is a “must-do” in the planning process. Bridal shows provide a one-stop location for all the products and services you could possibly need for planning a wedding, large or small. This allows you to comparison shop much easier. You can actually view many photographers’ portfolios, listen to two or three different bands, and even taste many varieties of cake from different bakers. Most bridal shows have a fashion show that highlights the latest styles in bridal gowns, tuxedos, and attire for the entire wedding party. Before you head out to any of these wonderful bridal shows, here are a few suggestions for making the most out of your bridal show experience. Are you ready? Here we go... Wear comfortable shoes. This has to be one of the most important items. The odds are you’ll be on your feet for quite a while, and uncomfortable shoes or warm, heavy boots will tire you out too quickly. Wear comfortable clothing. If possible check your coat in a coat room or leave it in the car. It’s one less thing you have to carry around. Here’s a huge time saving item... come prepared with peel off labels printed with your name, address, and wedding date and even email address if you have one. You will be writing your name and address a lot otherwise, entering the various giveaways and promotions.

Bring a large tote bag or pick up one at the show from a vendor. You’ll need it to carry all the brochures, flyers and information you collect from the vendors. Bring a friend or two along. (Yes, it can be your fiancé!). You’re going to need some help in carrying literature around, as well as someone to offer an objective third party opinion on things. Avoid bringing small children to the show. While it may be tempting to bring your flower girl along to see all the pretty wedding items, they are sure to tire quickly and detract from your mission of finding vendors and ideas for your wedding. Sign up for the giveaways. Some vendors give away prizes such as toasting glasses, gift baskets or major discounts off their service. You’ll find that some vendors actually give away their service or product as a prize, such as a free limousine for your wedding, free wedding cake, or a free portrait sitting. Bring swatches of material or ribbons with your wedding colors on them if you have them. This will help bakers, balloonists, and florists make appropriate suggestions as to what they can do for you if you have the opportunity to discuss details at the show. Grab a seat and enjoy the fashion show. Most are choreographed beautifully and offer a variety of the latest styles, colors and trends for your viewing pleasure. Bring a

pencil or pen and notebook to take notes on the program in case you see something you really like. You can go back to that bridal shop’s booth after the show and ask questions or make an appointment. If you already have a gown, you might want to skip the fashion show and visit vendor’s booths during that period. Most vendors should be available to talk with you as the booths might be less crowded during the fashion show. Don’t be afraid to take literature from every vendor. You might not think you need information on a string quartet or a consultant, but who knows, things may have a way of surprising you. Bring your date book with you so you can schedule your appointments with the vendors you are really interested in. When you find a vendor you would like to follow up with, take a pen and write down what struck you as appealing about them on their literature. When you get home and are faced with brochures from 14 different photographers, your note may be the only thing you have to remember which ones you liked and why. Above all… have fun! Keep an open mind to all that is presented at these shows and you’re sure to find the products and services that are right for you and that will make your day memorable and special.

Jamaica Inn: Honeymoon Elegance the Way It Should Be By Michelle Mangio, Honeymoon & Destination Wedding Specialist of Magical Escapes Vacations Let’s face it – most couples, when imagining their honeymoon, conjure up images of incredible romance on a gorgeous tropical island. And just as many imagine an exotic getaway, somewhere they’ve never been and might never go again. After all, many reason, is it even possible to find that old-world luxury, service, and romance in a destination everyone goes to? The answer to that question is the Jamaica Inn, resting elegantly along a private stretch of soft sand in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. As I’m writing this, about to gush about this amazing hotel – and trust me, I’m truly about to gush – you might think that I’m biased. And I would have to say yes, yes I am… because I had the extreme pleasure of a romantic getaway at this resort with my husband this past June, and I fell in love. The Jamaica Inn is the type of place I’ve been dreaming of, and didn’t even realize how much I longed for. I close my eyes, and I can still see the view from my verandah. I’ve been there, I love it, and now I’m telling you: this is the hotel to honeymoon at if you are looking for an intimate getaway, where oldworld charm, luxury, and personal service embrace you, coupled with romance and beautiful surroundings. Let me put it another way: when I vacation, I am the type of person who has to do and see it all. I might have an amazing room in a fabulous resort, but I rarely spend much time in it (though I may want to). I’m at a new place, and I want to get out and explore. And when we first planned our journey to Jamaica Inn, I had our schedule booked with tours, activities, and inspections. Then we arrived at the Jamaica Inn. We were met at the airport by a personal driver, who helped us into a private car, provided refreshments, and drove us to

the Inn. Upon arrival, we were greeted like family, given drinks as they checked us in and then escorted us to our accommodations – whereupon we discovered we were upgraded to one of the cottages overlooking the ocean. Now, I’ll confess… the view was amazing. I could (and did) spend hours just gazing out at our view, soaking in that blue, blue ocean. I took dozens of pictures, but none did it justice. Yet it wasn’t just the spacious rooms, the comfortable bed, the beautiful view. It wasn’t just the great dining (though it was great), the intimate resort, the private beach, the many hammocks, or other special little touches. It was also the people, who made us feel like family. It was the service and the friendliness of the staff. My husband mentioned that first day to one of the staff members that we would need to take one of the big leaves from the tree near our cottage home with us, as our four year old son enjoyed collecting leaves. Days later, when we checked out, he was reminded by that same person to take a leaf home for our son. That the staff remembered such a tiny detail goes to show the level of service they provide: they do listen, they do care, and they do take care of you. So what did I do? For perhaps the first time ever in any vacation I have taken, I threw all of our plans out the window. I didn’t want to leave the resort. I wanted to stay right there and enjoy it – and we did. Swinging in a hammock reading. Lying in the sun. Swimming in the beautiful Caribbean waters. Sharing stories with the staff at the bar. Enjoying high tea while playing games in the library. Getting a couples massage in a cabana over the ocean. Enjoying a private candlelight dinner on our verandah at sunset. It was the kind of perfect escape I

had always dreamed of. I told you I would gush. For those of you who have read many of my articles, I often try to be objective in the writing of them. Yet, it is my passion for travel and my passion to ensure that your honeymoon is equally unforgettable that my clients love and keeps them coming back to me. And I realized that there was no better testament to what a gem this resort is than to express how much the Jamaica Inn has ignited my passion for their intimate, elegant property. So what is it that really sets the Jamaica Inn apart from other resorts on the island? For one, in this modern world of commercialized all-inclusive resorts dominating the market, here is an intimate, five-star property on a beautiful stretch of private beach in lush Ocho Rios. Since 1950, the Jamaica Inn has been consistently ranked as one of the top hotels in the Caribbean, including Conde Nast Traveler, Travel & Leisure, TripAdvisor, and the World Travel Awards. It rests on what many consider to be the premier private beach in Jamaica, and all 47 of its suites – suites, not rooms – overlook the beach, the Caribbean Sea, or both. The resort boasts many amenities and services for its guests. Activities, such as croquet, snorkeling, kayaks, sunfish sailing, exercise room, swimming pool, are all complimentary, with windsurfing, sailing, tennis and diving available for a modest fee. Even beauty care can be scheduled in-room by appointment for those who desire it. The KiYara Ocean Spa is located on the seaside cliffs overlooking Cutlass Bay, and offers a wide range of holistic and blissful treatments. The name means “sacred place of the earth spirits” in the language of the Taino people (the original inhabitants of the area), and reflects the Spa’s commitment to balancing nature, the body, and the spirit.

The Jamaica Inn - Continued from page 20 Treatments are drawn from native plants of the islands, some coming from local organic farmers and others gathered in the wild using environmentally sustainable methods. An outdoor relaxation and resting area overlooks the ocean, in a peaceful setting surrounded by lush rainforest. Many of the treatment rooms open up to the ocean air, and a few are located in treetop or cliffside cabanas. For the perfect compliment to any Honeymoon, I highly recommend the Couples Moonlight Serenade, seventy-five minutes of romantic bliss. A champagne toast on a romantic candlelit deck over the ocean, followed by a couples massage… if the therapists don’t lull you into dreamland, the relaxing sound of the waves beneath you might very well do the trick. The dining at Jamaica Inn is a gourmet lover’s delight, from breakfast through the amazing six-course dinner. Indeed, Gourmet Magazine named the restaurant at Jamaica Inn its pick for a romantic dinner in Jamaica, and the Jamaica Observer awarded the Inn the “Best Kept Secret for Breakfast” in the Table Talk 2003 Food Awards. Dinner at the seaside restaurant is truly romantic. Amazing ocean views facing the sunset are only part of it, for dinner is held outside (weather permitting) by candlelight as if you sat among the stars. A live band performs throughout the evening, and is happy to take requests. But if you don’t wish to dress up for dinner (casual resort wear for breakfast & lunch, but dress up is required for the evening), there is, if one can believe it, an even more romantic option: candlelight dinner on your private verandah. For a modest fee – it was around $5 in June – you can opt to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner served instead on the verandah of your suite. And this isn’t just a waiter showing up with a tray, depositing it on your table, and leaving. This is whiteglove service. Imagine our delight when our staff member arrived, set out the white linens, china, and silverware, arranged all of our food, ensured we were set and needed nothing else, and then bowing his way out. And then, alone, with a full-course gourmet meal to enjoy at your leisure, together. I recommend at least one dinner – and one breakfast – to be enjoyed this way. But if there is a crowning glory of the Jamaica Inn, it has to be their suites. Spacious, impeccable, and tasteful, each suite has a private balustraded balcony or large verandah, complete with full-sized sofa, wing char, breakfast table, writing desk, and coffee table. There are no TVs, radios or clocks to intrude on your rest, and on the

22 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

rare occasion when the ocean breeze won’t suffice, each offers ceiling fans and air conditioning to provide comfort. There are three main categories of Suites: Balcony, Deluxe Verandah, and Premier Verandah. The difference is mainly in location, as they are all roughly the same size and layout. Balcony Suites are located upstairs in the Main Wing or East Wing Ocean Front, with views across the lawn to the beach and sea, with Deluxe Verandah Suites located on the ground floor. For honeymooners, I recommend the Premier Verandah Suites, as these are located either directly on the beach or on the water – the perfect location. Also available is the Cowdray Suite, offering a large bedroom with separate dressing room and a large living room style verandah with amazing views of the North Coast and the Caribbean Sea. For a bit of privacy, and direct access to the beach, consider the luxurious, one-bedroom Blue Cottage. The large shuttered verandah can be opened for amazing ocean views or closed for total seclusion, making this the perfect romantic hideaway. On the bluff overlooking the Caribbean Sea are a small number of one and two bedroom cottages, offering full kitchens, living rooms, master bedroom and large bathroom, large verandahs, and private entrance to the ocean. The most amazing accommodations would have to be the White Suite and Cottages 3 & 4. Many argue over which is better, but all agree they make for an amazing honeymoon experience. Cottage 3 & 4 rest along a bluff overlooking the Caribbean Sea and offer true panoramic views of the ocean. The natural beauty of the landscape and rainforest were kept as much as possible around the suite. Each exclusive suite offers an outdoor shower, an infinity plunge pool, and a private entrance to the sea. Marble-floored bathrooms are oversized with separate shower and tub, and a stocked wet bar is in the living room. The White Suite is located on its own private peninsula. To say the bedroom of the suite is large would be an understatement, as it features its own sitting area and a luxurious marble bathroom. At over 2000 square feet of living space, including a dining table and living room area, there is plenty of room to stretch out and enjoy breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea from anywhere in the suite. The private terrace opens to a secluded pool surrounded by lush rainforest. A trail leads down the peninsula, offering chairs and hammocks to enjoy, and ending a

short distance later in a private lookout point over the ocean. Private dinners or couples massage treatments can be enjoyed here. Regardless of which room you decide to stay in at the Jamaica Inn, you’ll soon find that you don’t want to go home. The staff are courteous and friendly, and exemplify the level of service you expect in an intimate, timelessly elegant resort. The Jamaica Inn is the type of place where honeymoon dreams are fulfilled. Don’t just take my word for it; come and experience it for yourself. Win a Honeymoon to the Jamaica Inn!
