I recently returned from a conference about brides and weddings which included how brides find information about planning their weddings. It was said that over 90% of brides planning weddings are finding their information online through the internet. That approximately 75% of you use instant messaging and social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. 44% of brides read blogs on a regular basis. You do all of this to find information and referals for wedding planning and in many ways, just to improve and share your life with others. We can now say, we are available where you are. You can also follow us on Twitter at WedDaySourcebk and become a fan of ours on Facebook and most of all, The Wedding Day Sourcebook’s complete issue is online at www.weddingsourcebook.com with clickable links to events, keywords, articles and advertisers that will take you directly to the information you need. We’re trying to make finding information and sharing your wedding experience easy and fun. We look forward to hearing from you! On Sunday, May 17th, The Finishing Touch Salon and Spa of South Hadley, are stepping up to raise money for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Springfield, MA. Budget cuts being the way they are, the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital has taken a big hit. This wonderful hospital organization helps children with life cripling disabilities, provides patient services to them and their families and is greatly needed in this area. The Finishing Touch Salon and Spa will be hosting the Shriner’s Spring Expo: A Bridal & Women’s Event on Sunday, May 17th at Adelphia’s Banquet Hall from 11-4pm. There will be a fashion show by Zaxwear, dance deomonstations, food samples and mini makeovers, plus amazing raffle and auction items with all the proceeds to benefit the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. Stop by Adelphia’s at 506 Granby Road, South Hadley, MA on Sunday May 17th and join the fight to raise money for this wonderful organization.

Ask Rose Eileen

A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, I’m a maid of honor and I’m planning a bachelorette party for my best friend. Since I’m technically the host, am I expected to pick up the tab for everyone? Kelly K, from Enfield, CT Dear Kelly, The bachelorette party is one event where the hosts aren’t expected to foot the bill for everyone. Typically, everyone chips in to cover the cost of the bride’s dinner and drinks, since she’s the one being honored. Any arrangement you come up with is fine, however—just be sure that everyone is on the same page before the night begins. Dear Rose Eileen, We’ve received a gift before our wedding, delivered by UPS. Do I send the thank you now or after the wedding? Laura from Springfield, MA Dear Laura, Open the gift to ensure it arrived intact. Send the Thank You note now. Don’t use until after the wedding. Dear Rose Eileen, I invited this person whom I’ve been friends with for a while, to my wedding. However at the bachelorette party we had a falling out and haven’t spoken since. She didn’t come to my shower last month either. Can I ask her and her boyfriend if they’re still coming to the wedding (I’m assuming they’re not?). I’m drawing up the seating arrangements with 3 weeks to go, so I need to know so I can finish our table layouts. I don’t want to set places for people that aren’t going to show up. They’ve already replied that

they would be attending. Is it rude to ask for sure? Thanks! Carrie by email Dear Carrie, If you’re going to ask, it may be best if a third party asked since they already replied that they would. There may be others who do not attend who replied that they would. So, if these two do not, they won’t be the only ones. Dear Rose Eileen, My parents are throwing us a very small engagement party for our family and wedding party to all get to know each other. One of the groomsman has recently started dating someone, less than a few months, and is insisting on bringing her. My fiance agrees with him. I have never met this girl and I really don’t feel it is appropriate for our first meeting to be on the night of our engagement party. Am I being unreasonable? What’s your thoughts? Laura by email Dear Laura, I think it would be a wonderful gesture to invite her to your engagement party. I’m not sure how soon your engagement party is, but you could break the ice and invite her and her boyfriend over to your home or out for a drink so you can meet. Only those invited to the wedding should be invited to any prewedding party and it would be nice to be able to include dates. You might find a really good friend in this relationship...keep an open mind.

Ceremony: Abbey Chapel, Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA Reception: Chandler’s Restaurant, Yankee Candle Company, South Deerfield, MA Gown: David’s Bridal – It was the first dress I tried on. Tuxedo: Erik wore his own black suit Photographer: Seth Kaye Photography. Florist: Pat Parker and Sons, Springfield, MA Cake: Greggory’s in Hadley, MA Hair & Makeup: Lori, at Salon Medusa in West Hartford, CT First Dance: Our first dance was on the pier in the moonlight in St. Lucia on our honeymoon. Honeymoon: St. Lucia

Be Unique: Instead of the usual bright banquet hall or country club for our wedding, we opted for something more intimate and romantic with Chandler’s at the Yankee Candle Company. All of our pictures from the reception have a wonderful soft glow because of all the candlelight and having such a small wedding allowed us to really splurge on the food and wine.

Favorite Moments: Kate: The moment that stands out to me most was giving our vows. While Erik was holding my hands and saying his vows, I expected him to glance downward or away due to nerves, but instead, he never broke eye contact with me. It made me feel like we are really in this together. Erik: The moment where Kate was coming down the aisle. She looked beautiful. 8 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

Bridal Registry Tips and Items You’ll Really Use While the fondue pot and ice cream maker seem like must-haves when you’re adding items to your bridal registry, it’s important to ask yourself, “Will I really use these items on a regular basis?” You may want to reconsider your selections. And, although making a wedding gift wish list can be daunting, the following tips can keep the happy couple celebrating wedded bliss for years to come. Registry Basics Before you and your sweetheart start scanning items for your registry, do your homework. Consider the size of your space and where you will store your new items. If you’re living in an apartment or smaller condominium, you may want to rethink registering for the super-deluxe size barbecue grill. You’ll be surprised how quickly your new gifts can fill up your space. Next, think about your guest list. Make sure that you have a variety of items to choose from and at different price points -- high and low -- so guests can purchase items they feel reflect their own taste and that they can afford. Be sure to consider your out-of-town guests as well, by registering for items that are available both at nationwide locations and online, such as Target and Bed Bath & Beyond, to help ensure they can access your registries from anywhere. Kitchen and Bath Registry Ideas and Necessities Now that the registry basics are covered, the fun can begin. Start with the rooms that you live in and use the most -- the kitchen and bathroom. Do you like to host dinner parties? 12 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

Fine china should be on your list. Find something that will not only match your taste and decor, but also be a classic design for years to come. Want to skip the china, but love to cook? Register for a complete collection of high-end cookware. Don’t forget the cook cooking gadgets and utensils. In addition to registering for the mainstays in the kitchen, such as sterling silver flatware and crystal stemware, don’t forget about everyday items like measuring cups and spoons, a kitchen scale, electronic timers or even a microwave oven. Love a spa feeling and want to re-create it in your bathroom at home? Then don’t settle for a plain, ordinary shower experience when you can create an invigorating one. Register for a new showerhead. Choose on with a fixed and handheld version, and a spray selector!

or candlelit dinners at your vacation destination on sites such as www.honeymoonwishes.com or www.thebigday. com. Register for horseback riding or scuba diving adventures for you and your sweetheart to have memories that will last a lifetime. Finding Inspiration Still need help finding inspiration before registering? Recent, popular items to register for include: * Luggage * Tool kit * Bagless vacuum or steam cleaner * Patio furniture * Ultra compact digital camera (to help capture memories of your special day and new life together) Before taking the big walk down the aisle, make sure you’re prepared with necessities that will last long after saying “I do.”

Continue to create your spalike, romantic atmosphere by registering for luxury bath towels and high-thread-count sheets. Other items to consider, both extravagant and necessary, include: a down comforter, feather bed, pillows, alarm clock with dual alarms and a closet organizer. Beyond the Registry If you and your significant other are looking for adventure instead of objects, why not create memories instead? Family and friends can help purchase items including your airfare, honeymoon suite

Using Theatrical Lighting To Personalize Your Wedding by Jim Powers CJC Event Lighting

“Theatrical lighting can enhance any event with almost any budget. “

16 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

Jim Powers Robert Charles Photography

We’ve all seen those ultimate wedding shows. You know the ones where the budget just makes you blink a couple times. A common theme in most of those high end weddings is the use of theatrical lighting to create a mood in the venue. Once only reserved for the “platinum wedding” crowd, Theatrical lighting can enhance any event for almost any budget. The right lighting will create the right atmosphere and when it’s done well, lighting can make everything, including your flowers, cake, and guests, look better. Lighting can transform a venue. You can take an old church hall or a dated banquet room and completely transform it into a very high end looking room. Simple lighting solutions can be quite affordable. If you’re planning an evening reception, make sure to visit your site at least once when it’s dark outside. Look around the room and see where the fixed lighting is focused. Lights that illuminate the walls, windows, and ceiling can draw attention away from the center of the room. You want to keep everyone’s eyes on the tables, dance floor, and each other. Ask if the site has dimmers for their overhead lights, and if there’s any florescent lighting at all, keep it turned off! Also, make sure there won’t be any service doors kept open, which could flood the space with light and ruin the effect. You’ll also need to discuss how much electricity your lighting designer is going to need. Your band or DJ will have to have an isolated power source and won’t want to risk tripping a circuit breaker. In order to express your desires to your lighting professional,

You’ll need to know a couple terms which will help to let the designer know what you want. A Pin Spot is a fixture that provides a focused beam of light to illuminate an object like a centerpiece or wedding cake. A Color Wash is basically a blanket of colored light covering an entire area. This can be accomplished with Uplighting. Uplighting is when there are fixtures placed on the floor shooting up on to the wall. Several different types of fixtures can be used to accomplish this effect. Your lighting professional will recommend the right fixture by taking into account power requirements and the type of color saturation desired. Gobo projections can include the couple’s monogram or an abstract texture pattern to add interest to a plain wall or ceiling. When using color, it is very easy to make your room look... um... tacky. You don’t want it to look like a high school dance or a rave (not

until later on maybe when the DJ or band lights kick in). Use just one or two colors to set the mood. Usually a safe bet is a soft pink or a Magenta. Your lighting professional will recommend a color based on the venue and the colors being used in your wedding. We’ve done more than a few weddings where just white light was used and it looked phenomenal. Whatever you decide, Theatrical Lighting can be an affordable way to set the mood for your event.

Tips To Help Wedding Guests Say “I Do” To Savings An invitation to a wedding is generally considered good news, but the expenses associated with attending one, especially an out-of-town event, may present more than a few financial challenges. Fortunately, there are ways to save on your expenses as a wedding guest or member of the bridal party. Here are a few tips for travelers to avoid wedding guest debt: • Do your homework when it comes to travel arrangements. If you have to fly, book as far in advance as you can to take advantage of discounted rates, which can be found by visiting a Web site that compares prices. Keep in mind that you may be able to get cheaper rates if you are prepared to fly early in the morning or late at night. When deciding whether or not to rent a car, first crunch the numbers and consider all the expenses involved in getting around while you are there. In some cases, it may actually save money to rent a car for a couple of days, especially if you have other guests to share expenses with. But in other situations, you may save by taking public transportation to and from the airport. • Explain your situation to the bride and groom. Perhaps the bride can help you find an inexpensive place to stay, or suggest other guests you might be able to share a room or transportation with. Brides may be interested to learn how to take advantage of group booking Web sites that some hotels offer for guests. At Hampton hotels, for example, brides can manage group reserva22 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

tions on its online group booking site at hampton.com/wedding. Brides can book five to 25 affordable guest rooms online and then use the Guest List Manager to review and update reservation information 24/7, and the Personalized Group Web pages to keep everyone updated on details for the big day, such as important times and directions. • Save on food expenses. Some accommodations offer a coffeepot and a microwave for heating up food--or better yet, a free breakfast buffet. For meals other than those eaten with the bridal party, make sandwiches or snacks in your room. Also, pack an individual refillable water bottle to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day and to save on beverage costs.

Delta SkyMiles. Depending on the loyalty program, travelers can save on car rental costs and hotel accommodations, or even purchase wedding gifts with extra loyalty points. • Gift wisely. You don’t want to scrimp on a wedding gift, but your friends will understand if you don’t go overboard. Find out where they are registered and shop from their registry, which should offer a range of prices. Purchase a more inexpensive gift or split a larger wedding gift with a friend. Being practical about planning can help keep your friend’s special day from leaving a lasting dent in your wallet. When you say “I do” to attending a wedding, you don’t have to spend more than you can afford. A little advance planning can help you save on travel and hotel expenses.

• Use loyalty program points such as Hilton HHonors, Hertz #1 Club and/or May 2009

Giving The Gift Of A Charitable Donation More and more, couples now vow to start their lives together by making a difference in the lives of others. Saying “I do” to a wedding that benefits a charity is easier than you might imagine--and especially timely, as many charities need extra help during a time of economic downturn. By the time many couples get married, they often don’t need an extra toaster but would really appreciate a donation to the charity of their choice. Giving is a great way to start your life together and coming up with a list can provoke some meaningful conversations about values. Here are five heartwarming ideas you may want to consider: 1. Feed the hungry. If you have unopened food and beverages left over from your wedding, donate them to a nearby food bank or soup kitchen. 2. Share your flowers. After the wedding, drop off your flowers at a hospital or nursing home so others can enjoy them. 3. Buy wedding essentials from companies that donate to charities you support. 4. Donate your bridesmaid dresses to an organization that supplies prom dresses to girls who can’t afford them. 5. Register your wedding. Ask your guests to donate to a charity they identify with you. You can even suggest a Web site through which they can donate--a sort of customizable wedding charity registry. One site that offers a wedding registry service features charity gift cards guests can order. The site lets brides host a personalized Web page--there are a number of themes from which to choose--which can be used to send information, e-mail invitations and updates. The charity gift cards also make great wedding favors. One of the most meaningful wedding gifts is a donation to the favorite charities of the bride and the groom. 24 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
