Welcome 2011! What an exciting year on the horizon! We’ve seen a recent increase in reserved dates for brides and grooms planning 2011 weddings! That’s very exciting! What’s even more exciting about is the embracing of “making it your own” where brides and grooms are bringing more personality and style into their own weddings. Our local wedding professionals are also rising to the occasion and bringing more inventive unique ways to work with the couple to give them exactly what they want for their wedding day. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be open about your personality and style and what you would like for the end results, but also be open minded to what those wedding professionals have to tell you and offer you. Their experience should be relied on. After all, that’s why you hire a professional...to give you the results you want, to eliminate stress and to assure that you’re going to have an absolute fabulous wedding. Usually we feature a Real New England Wedding on our cover each month, but this month we decided to showcase something different. It’s not every day you see a bunch of brides walking around at The Big E, our area’s Great State Fair! Check out the feature! January brings a number of bridal events to the area! Be sure to stop by the Wedding Day Sourcebook display at each event and register for an amazing prize pack from us!

Ask Rose Eileen
A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, I’ve never been married before and with our families and planning this wedding, I hadn’t anticipated how much everyone would want to contribute! My mom is paying for most of the reception, the cake, the favors. My maid of honor, who is my sister, has offered to buy the flowers and is paying for the wedding shower. My fiance’s parents are paying for the photographer and my brother wants to pay for the band. I just feel badly since I feel like we, my fiance and I, should be paying more. I feel like we’re putting everyone out. We are getting married and having the wedding so that we can celebrate with our friends and family, not take advantage of them. They won’t even let us pay for a dinner out or hotel rooms. Anything I should do? Have words of wisdom? Kim from Enfield, CT Dear Kim, Your attitude is a breath of fresh air. If your family members and his parents have offered to help out then there is no need to feel guilty. As long as you’re not asking or insisting that your family pays Heavenly Elegance , then just thank them. Remember that parents are no longer obligated to pay for their children’s weddings, but we’re seeing more and more families come 467-2247 together andTara share (413) expenses with the Cell Phone (413) 896-4738 interest of having a wonderful celebration. I think showing your gratitude and appreciation for your families is enough, but be sure to send thank you notes... and maybe even a small gift. Dear Rose Eileen, I’m traveling from out of town to be an attendant in a friend’s wedding. When she was in mine, we paid for her hotel for 4 nights. She has offered to have me stay at her apartment for the first two nights I am there and then
when my husband arrives, we will stay at a hotel. I have been assuming that they would pay for the hotel but I asked whether we should make our reservations or if they would be doing that for us, and she told me I would need to call the hotel. How can I ask her if they are paying for the hotel? Or should I just assume we are paying for it ourselves? Lauren by email Dear Lauren, She may not realize that usually the couple pays for at least one night of their attendant’s lodging. So, you’re going to have to just ask her. If you’re paying, do not feel you have to stay at that certain hotel, especially if the rates are higher than others in the area.

Dear Rose Eileen, I just found out that a good friend is getting married in exactly one month at a destination 500 miles from our home town. I was told I was invited although I have yet to receive the actual invitation in the mail. I had already made plans on the wedding date and I’m a little annoyed at the short notice for a wedding where I’m expected to pay for my own transportation and lodging, not to mention gift, etc. (at least $400) with less than a 30-day notice. I’m fearful that if I decline to attend, it will adversely affect our friendship, but at the same time, she didn’t seem to think of others in her last minute decision. Is one-month notice appropriate for an out-of-town wedding?? Help, what should I do? Tina by email Dear Tina, You do not have to attend but since you were invited (if you do get your invitation) it would be nice to politely decline with a note, inside the card/gift that

Trash The Dress As featured on the cover of The Wedding Day Sourcebook Photographs provided by Bunnell Photography. (See page 9. )
“Trash the Dress” photo sessions are a new trend in post-wedding photography. It’s an opportunity for brides to wear their wedding dress one more time and to take fun photos without fear of getting the dress dirty. Plus, wedding dresses should be cleaned after the reception anyway, so why not have some more fun with it first? During an informal Bunnell Photography staff meeting, Christine Ventulett Buckley and I had the idea to do a Trash the Dress session with a twist. We wanted to shoot lots of brides at once! After a brainstorming meeting, we were energized with the idea of doing the session on closing day of The Big E. Since this wasn’t a traditional photo shoot, we decided to hold it like a fundraiser. One of our clients has a young daughter who is severely effected by rheumatoid arthritis. She was selected as the 2010 Arthritis Walk ambassador. It seemed like the perfect solution to raise money for a cause so close to one of our clients. We spread the word among our most recent clients as well as Facebook fans. Everyone was enthralled with the idea of a group Trash the Dress session, especially since it hadn’t been done here before. The shooting possibilities were endless! We arranged for three Bunnell Photographers to help document the event as well as DL Video. The big day arrived and we ended up with 8 brides. All the women in bridal attire made quite a scene at the fair! Hundreds of onlookers barraged us with questions. We jumped into the parade, rode the ferris wheel, went down the giant slide, and dipped their feet in the hot tub display. The brides were all great sports and had a blast. This was the craziest shoot I’ve ever done and I look forward to making this an annual event.

Wedding Themes 3 Reasons Why Your Wedding Needs One

radiant for your wedding day. Schedule a free makeover. Invite your Look simply
Wedding themes can turn an average wedding into a spectacular event. From simple to extravagant, wedding themes can make your wedding a soiree that your guests will remember for a long time. A wedding theme is incorporated into all aspects of your wedding including invitations, reception decorations, favors and sometimes wedding attire. You can even plan your reception menu around a wedding theme. Why should you choose a theme for your wedding? Here are the top three reasons to choose a wedding theme: 1) Themes set your wedding apart from others by letting you showcase your creativity. 2) Weddings are more fun and exciting to plan when there is a theme involved. 3) Theme weddings are more entertaining for guests, and they are sure to remember how much fun they had. Once you decide to incorporate a theme into your wedding, the next step is choosing what type of theme to go with. Think about ideas for possible wedding themes. When you picture your wedding, what theme comes to mind? Here are several possible wedding themes for you to use: - Seasonal wedding themes, such as Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer, allow you to incorporate seasonal ideas into your wedding. For example, when you think of Fall leaves, pumpkins and apples come to mind.
- Christmas weddings get everyone into the holiday spirit, and you may even be able to take advantage of your reception location’s holiday decorations. - Medieval wedding themes offer you the opportunity dress in garb in addition to decorating your reception site. You can even choose to get married in a castle to make it more authentic. - What better place to get married than on a beach? Beach wedding ideas are fun, laid-back and offer many different theme possibilities including seashells, pirates and lighthouses. - Western wedding themes are the perfect fit if you are into country music, cowboys or line dancing. - Growing up you may have dreamed of a wedding like Cinderella had. Now is your chance to have a Cinderella themed wedding as a grown up complete with a carriage to whisk you away at the end of your wedding. - Masquerade weddings add mystery and intrigue to your wedding celebration. This theme is perfect in the fall, especially around Halloween. - For the sports-minded bride and groom, consider incorporating a sport like golf or your favorite team into your wedding. Although a theme is not a requirement for a great wedding, there are a few very good reasons for having one. If you are creative, have the motivation and really want to wow your guests, consider incorporating a theme into your big day.

How To Plan the Perfect Honeymoon The date is set, the dress is bought and the tuxes are rented-now you get to plan your first vacation together as husband and wife. Whether your ideal honeymoon is traveling to the Swiss Alps for some mountain fun or relaxing on an exotic beach in the Caribbean, it’s a special time you’ll never forget. So what do you need to know to plan the perfect honeymoon that goes off without a hitch? The best thing you can do is research, plan and prepare together. Here are some things to consider when planning the perfect honeymoon: 1. Choose a destination together. Pick a destination that you both really want to visit. Each person should choose the top three places they would like to honeymoon and then compare lists. If you both want something relaxing, a traditional spa vacation in the tropics is a good choice. If you are adventure junkies, be sure to visit a location that off ers lots of fun activities. 2. Prep ahead of time. Make a checklist of things you need to do before your trip. Research the laws of the country to where you will be traveling and see what rules are different. It’s a good idea to check with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to fi nd out what types of immunizations are recommended for Americans at that specific destination. And remember, if you don’t have a passport or need to renew, allow ample time for processing. If you’re changing your name after your wedding, make sure that the name on your travel documents matches what is on your passport so 22 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
that you don’t experience any delays through security and customs. 3. Get medical and travel assistance services. No one plans on getting sick or having other problems on their honeymoon, but wouldn’t it be nice to have the peace of mind to know that if something happens, you’re covered? That’s why it’s important to get medical and travel assistance. Your health insurance might not cover you while you travel, so a company like On Call International is there to help. On Call members get access to a 24-hour emergency response center to find doctors in their travel area, a 24-hour English-speaking nurse line to help identify symptoms, and coverage should a traveler need to return home for medical reasons. In addition, On Call can help you with other travel woes such as a lost passport, misplaced credit card, lost baggage or the need to reschedule a delayed or cancelled flight.
room with a stomach ache on their honeymoon. Food and water in different countries can be contaminated so do your research before celebrating at the local restaurant. When in doubt, ask your hotel concierge for advice. If you are buying your own food, sealed products are usually safer options because they come directly from the distribution center. These planning tips should help you have the honeymoon of your dreams. If something does go wrong, remember to work through it and enjoy the time you have together. After all, it’s one of the most important and special vacations you’ll ever take.
4. Pack the right stuff. Sure you want to look great for your spouse, but sometimes looking chic and dressing appropriately for the location you’re visiting might not be the same thing. Research what tourists usually wear at your chosen location. If you’re traveling internationally, different cultures might have different expectations. Also remember that extreme weather, hot and cold, requires different types of clothing, so pack accordingly and you won’t have to buy something at an exorbitant price when you get there. 5. Eat, drink and be merry. No one wants to be stuck in their hotel bathJanuary 2011

A New Twist on Pearls for Your Wedding Day and Beyond Perfect for accessorizing your wedding and bridesmaids gowns, pearls can fit just about any wedding style. Since ancient times, the pearl has been a symbol of unblemished perfection. It is the oldest known gem, and for centuries it was considered the most valuable. Pearls have been considered ideal wedding gifts because they symbolize purity and innocence. The ancient Greeks also believed that pearls should be part of the wedding experience. They considered pearls to be the “wedding gem” because they believed that pearls would help ensure marital bliss and prevent newlywed brides from crying. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, pearls were at the height of wedding fashion with royal weddings in the French House of Burgundy. Everyone from the bride to her male guests were adorned in glowing pearls. And from Queen Eliza-
beth I to our modern Queen Elizabeth II, the tradition of wearing pearls on the wedding day has continued. At the beginning of the 20th century, pearls were as much a nuptial gem in the United States as diamonds are today. Today, the tradition of bestowing pearls upon the bride continues. Often the father of the bride or the groom gives the gift of pearls. Many brides give their bridesmaids pearl necklaces, bracelets or earrings too. And this is where you can personalize and customize pearls for yourself, your bridesmaids or even a gift.
