Welcome to March! Can we try to “Think Spring” yet?? Well, we’re thinking Spring with The Western New England Spring Bridal Show on Sunday, March 6th at the MassMutual Center. Put the fun in planning a wedding with the focus on the best wedding professionals in the area, exciting fashion shows, live music and, of course, wedding cake! Get an upclose look at wedding cakes during the Wedding Cake Design Show and Competition. Don’t miss this event! In this issue we rediscover the wedding cake. Its so much more than a delectible finish to a wedding. Many cakes are works of art with theme, style and decor that requires a thoughtful plan and a steady hand. They not only must look beautiful, but the taste needs to be of the highest quality with the demand on freshness and flavor. Be creative with your wedding cake!!

Ask Rose Eileen

A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, I’m traveling from out of town to be an attendant in a friend’s wedding. When she was in mine, we paid for her hotel for 4 nights. She has offered to have me stay at her apartment for the first two nights I am there and then when my husband arrives, we will stay at a hotel. I have been assuming that they would pay for the hotel but I asked whether we should make our reservations or if they would be doing that for us, and she told me I would need to call the hotel. How can I ask her if they are paying for the hotel? Or should I just assume we are paying for it ourselves? Lauren by email Dear Lauren, She may not realize that usually the couple pays for at least one night of their attendant’s lodging. So, you’re going to have to just ask her. If you’re paying, do not feel you have to stay at that hotel, especially if the Heavenly Elegance rates are higher than others in the area.

gift, etc. (at least $400) with less than a 30-day notice. I’m fearful that if I decline to attend, it will adversely affect our friendship but at the same time, she didn’t seem to put others into her last minute decision. Is one-month notice appropriate for an out-of-town wedding?? Help, what should I do? Tina by email Dear Tina, You do not have to attend but since you were invited (if you do get your invitation) it would be nice to politely decline with a note, inside the card/gift that you send to congratulate them. While she was very inconsiderate when making her wedding plans, she is still a friend and is going to be celebrating a very big day in her life.

Dear Rose Eileen, Tara (413) 467-2247 I just found out that a good friend is Cell Phone (413) 896-4738 getting married in exactly one month at a destination 500 miles from our home town. I was told I was invited although I have yet to receive the actual invitation in the mail. I had already made plans on the wedding date and I’m a little annoyed at the short notice for a wedding where I’m expected to pay for my own transportation and lodging, not to mention

Be Unique: We had a photo booth in lieu of favors and our guests thought it was a hit! So much of our wedding was unique and personalized due to the hard work of Beth Degray and the staff at the Log Cabin as well as our phenomenal vendors. We couldn’t have asked for a better team to make our Wedding day complete.

Favorite Moments: Laura: When Durochers delivered the flowers, the wedding ceremony, and our first dance. Tom: Standing on the altar as Laura walked down the aisle. “Our most memorable moment together is when we were escorted by Beth DeGray and Peter Rosskothen from the Log Cabin to see the 8 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook March 2011 Grand Ballroom before it was opened to our guests. Hiring a Professional Makeup Artist for a Flawless Look By Lynn Tassinari Wegiel There is an age old statement, that when your being photographed wear more makeup. This may be true to a degree. If you don’t wear makeup at all, then by all means more is necessary. It’s a new age and in today’s world of digital photography, every bit of makeup shows up a little more than usual. Flawless makeup is very important. So how do you achieve that? First and foremost, if you can, hire a professional. Ask if they are licensed and what kind of experience they have with wedding makeup. Do they come to you or do you have to go to them. If your having a morning wedding, chances are you don’t have a lot of time to be running around. You should ask if they have a portfolio, examples of what they have done, so you can see for yourself how their work photographs. Every “professional” makeup artist has one. You should never hire a makeup artist sight unseen. Go for a trial, some will charge for this service and some will not. Everyone is different. How long will the makeup last? Do they offer a product line that you can purchase for touch ups if necessary? Beware of sales people masquerading as makeup artists. If they are more interested in selling you products than the work at hand you might leave them spending more money than necessary with more products than you know what to do with. If their work holds up all you should need for touch up that day is your lip products and powder. A good makeup artist knows what effect lighting has on makeup. You will be seen in all kinds of light on your big day. Outside for pictures, and inside. Church lighting, candle light and most importantly, face to face www.weddingsourcebook.com

with your guests and your groom. A seasoned makeup artist will know the right amount of makeup to apply so that you look good in all of these situations. If it just doesn’t seem to be in your budget and you will be doing your own makeup here are a few tips in getting a flawless look: * Makeup sure your foundation makeup matches your skin exactly. If you feel you are too pale, you can always add color with bronzers. If your base in not right, it will be the first thing you’ll notice in your photos. * Use a damp sponge to apply foundation. Using your fingers will give you uneven coverage. Blend it down below the jaw line. * Make sure you have good brushes for your powder products, such as eyeshadow and blush. Using the sponge applicators that usually come with eyeshadows will deliver too much product and result in wasted time in blending. Brushes give a nice haze of color . Softness is the key. * And last, always finish with a loose powder all over the face. This blends your blush, seals the foundation and keeps down unnecessary shine. Without it your makeup will not last half as long as it would if you used it. Just remember less is more. Lynn Tassinari Wegiel is a Professional Makeup Artist whose work has been recognized internationally as well as locally on stage and screen and in print. She has been working with brides for over 20 years. Lynn can be reached at 413-564-6994

What Is Your Dream Cake? For years, tiers were the thing when it came to wedding cakes: Multiple round white cakes, piled high with plastic supports between the layers, and topped with a plastic couple that didn’t look much like the actual bride and groom. But like so many traditions, this one has been replaced and every year wedding cakes seem to get more nontraditional, more personal, even more fun. Most cakes today tend to be layers stacked directly on top of each other with no visiible means of support, somewhat more traditional design. Square shapes are popular, but some people still opt for round or go with a combination of other shapes, such as a hexagon or octagon. The key is a well preceived design sturdy enough to avoid crashing down during the event. Wedding themes, colors and event settings are being taken into consideration when designing a wedding cake. Today’s wedding cakes are often decorated with flowers, usually sugarpaste or fresh, and piping in a range of styles. Bride-and-groom toppers have given way to flowers, crystals, piping and other, more sophisticated designs such as iced or jeweled monograms.

the right recipe!” noted Deb. Some brides just want a very traditional wedding cake. “We seen a number of celebrity weddings with the traditional all white wedding cake with intricate piping and details,” says Lisa Powers of The Wedding Day Sourcebook. But for today’s wedding cakes, anything goes. From traditional, non traditional, theme or not, using imagination to capturing the desire of a couple’s wedding is what it’s all about. Chris Gadaire from Cakes by Chris says, “I want to capture the magic of the wedding day and to have fun with it.” The Western New England Spring Bridal Show on March 6th at the MassMutual Center will feature the area’s only Wedding Cake Design Contest. Local cake artisians will have an opportunity to highlight their talents, stretch their imagination and enter their unique designs. The brides attending this event will have an opportunity to cast their ballot for their favorite design. The cake design with the most votes will win the Brides’ Choice Award. Visit the website for show details at www.cjcevents.com

Smooth finishes, often fondant, an elastic icing rolled out in sheets, are the most desired. White or off-white is still common, but many people opt for a color or a color combination. Despite the misconception, fondant can be flavored with a number of options such as almond, chocolate, and white chocolate. Deb Martin from Cakes by Deb loves working with fondant. “It does take practice and patience, plus 20 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

How to Freeze A Wedding Cake This is a very simple task to accomplish. Ask a responsible person to take the top layer home. First, this layer should be placed into the freezer immediately to harden the icing. In one to two hours, the cake should be frozen. The cake should then be loosely wrapped in plastic several times and placed into a cake box. The cake box should also be wrapped in plastic, and then placed into the freezer. This will preserve the taste and texture of the cake.

A word of caution: never keep the wedding cake in a frost-free freezer, because the constant defrosting will draw the moisture out of the cake. If you are moving within the year, leave the cake with a family member or friend’s freezer after the wedding to avoid moving the cake before your anniversary. When you are prepared to eat your cake on your anniversary, remove the cake from the freezer and thaw in the refrigerator for 48 hours, then place at room temperature for 2 to 3 hours. Your cake will be as beautiful (and tasty) as the day of your wedding!
