Ask Rose Eileen

A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, We are thinking of planning a wedding near Christmas or New Years. What do we do about decoration? I thought it would be cheaper because things are already decorated, but I’m not sure. Your suggestions? Gale M. Holiday Bride! Dear Gale, You’re going to have to discuss decorations with your venues of choice. Many venues have general holiday decor that they use for many holiday parties for businesses and such. Do they have red and white pointsettas, a holiday tree, more silver and gold adornments? Take a look at what they usually do around the holiday for color. You can surely compliment their decor with table linens, napkins, lighting, chair covers and even party favors. The cost to you depends on what changes you want to make or add to what’s already there. Dear Rose Eileen, We’ve been thinking of hiring a wedding coordinator/planner. We’ve recently moved and I’ve started a new job so I think hiring one would take some stress off of me. My friends say do it, my future mother-in-law says NO, but my guy says do whatever I want. Is it expensive and worth it? I don’t mind paying but I don’t want to be taken advantage of. Nicole K. in Enfield, CT by email Dear Nicole, Wedding planning can be stressful when you’re dealing with a new home and job. You know you’ve got the wedding coming so don’t bite off more than you can chew. Keeping organized and on task and budget is key and one that any good wedding coordinator knows is important. Having a wedding coordinator should make your life easier and they do have

great connections and tricks up their sleeves for getting the best wedding professionals, products and services for your money. People sometimes say they cost a lot, but think of what they can save you in discounts, time and energy. It’s worth it. Dear Rose Eileen, Weddings being as they are, somewhat expensive...I’m trying to save money. Our biggest budget busting item is reception food. My mother and two aunts have suggested I let them take care of the food, as they want to make it themselves...a big DIY project. I’m nervous...what do you think? Sheila D. Springfield, MA Dear Sheila, As I’m all for saving money, getting the best value for your dollar when it comes to wedding planning...one area I would never suggest to DIY is reception food! Taking on that responsibility could be extremely overwhelming. First, it’s your wedding...your mother is going to want to enjoy it too. Do you think saving a few dollars is worth it when it comes to your mother enjoying your special day too? Next, you need to be aware that many venues do not allow average people to cater their own event. They will require a licensed, insured caterer who is experienced with food safety, service and clean up. And speaking of safety...you’ll need to keep hot things hot, cold things cold. Plus there is a big difference between serving 40 people at a bridal shower versus 150+ people at a wedding reception. My advice, honestly...find an experienced, licensed caterer to handle your food for your reception. Visit many and be honest about your budget. You’ll be surprised at the options you have even on a limited budget. Good luck and may your mother and aunts enjoy the wedding too!

Do you have a question about planning your wedding? Rose Eileen invites you to submit any questions about wedding planning by mail or email. Rose Eileen and the advertisers of the Wedding Day Sourcebook will do their utmost to answer them. Send Your Questions About Weddings To: “Dear Rose Eileen”, c/o The Wedding Day Sourcebook P.O. Favorite Moments: It was very important for Martin and I to include our family in our special day. This included my sister as maid of honor, our 4 nieces as flower girls, my nephew as ring bearer, and Martin’s sisters as a reader and a flutist for our ceremony. I think this added a couple unique moments to our day. The sentimetal: My mother passed away after her battle with cancer just one year and one week before our wedding day. My wedding day was certainly bittersweet, having to spend it with my mom only in spirit. To honor her memory we included her in our ceremony via the prayer of the faithful and with a poem on the back of our programs. At the ceremony we let our guests know that charitable donations had been made in leui of traditional favors to the American Cancer Society and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, where my mother had received her treatments. Throughout the day I carried a photo of my mother in a heart-shaped locket pinned to my bouquet. And at the conclusion of the wedding weekend, I sent my sister home with all of my flowers to bring to my mom at her gravesite. Keeping my mom close in those ways allowed me to honor her presense. And present I know she was, as everything went off flawlessly that day despite the advice from many family and friends to prepare myself for the something that would inevitably go wrong. The adorable: My three and a half year old nephew, Carmichael, decided that his role as ring bearer just wasn’t enough. About half way through the ceremony Carmichael joined us at the alter, tugging on his mother’s dress and Martin’s jacket. While my sister was in a panic over his 15 additional minutes of fame, I found it so endearing. Lucky for us he decided to keep quiet and sit fairly still, and provided the opportunity to snap some wonderful photos to preserve the moment for all time.

You Could Win... When You Vote! The Western New England Great Wedding Giveaway brought together some amazing wedding professionals in promotion of giving a whole wedding away to one amazing couple. On March 7th, in front of a live audience at the Western New England Spring Bridal Show, the winning couple, Stephanie and Brian were announced. From that date it has been a whirlwind of activity and planning. The general public, friends and family are now invited back weekly to help the couple plan their wedding by voting on the very elements that make up this special day. Stephanie and Brian have also had some wonderful guidance and support with Lynn Brunelle Kennedy of LB Events and Marketing. “Lynn is amazingly coordinated and will guide Stephanie and Brian through their wedding planning process with these wonderful wedding professionals,” says Lisa Powers, organizer of the promotion. To date, Bancroft Bridals had three beautiful choices for wedding gowns for Stephanie. Voters made their choice known and within a week the bridal gown was revealed to Stephanie. Official promotion photographer, Seth Kaye of Seth Kaye Photography was on hand to take some emotional images at the bridal gown reveal. “The ladies at Bancroft Bridals went above and beyond with three beautiful choices for Stephanie with one amazing winning gown,” says Lisa. “She’s going to look beautiful on her wedding day!”

www.weddingsourcebook.com

Next Bridal Heirlooms offered up some stylish dress choices for the bridesmaids. The results, as of this printing, have not been revealed, but you should check out the website at www.thegreatweddinggiveaway. com for the latest information. After the bridesmaids selections, invitation choices from Lasting Impression Invitations will be up next for voting. Linda Raffa of Lasting Impressions, carries the most recent invites for weddings and we look forward to seeing the winning style chosen by voting on the website. Coming up next month you’ll see options for tuxedos for the men in the wedding party from Formal Affairs Tuxedo and Tailor along with some beautiful wedding jewelry by Roxy’s Jewelry Boutique and custom jewelry for the bridesmaids from Rys and Shine. Flowers from Durocher Florist will also be on the schedule. Plus we’ll see more information on the wedding reception and ceremony location at the Marriott in Springfield, MA. “Every week a new item to view and vote on will go up on the website, plus voters will have the opportunity to win some wonderful prizes also!” So check out the website at www. thegreatweddinggiveaway.com and meet the winners and begin to choose your favorites for their wedding.

By Lynn Tassinari Wegiel More than twenty years ago Dina Ousley, one of the founders of the Dinair Airbrush Systems, started to research the concept of a clean, natural makeup using the art style of pointillism. She discovered that custom foundation makeup, shot through an airbrush pen, disperses a fine mist to the face, producing a natural result in both skin tone and texture. Scars, discolorations, under-eye circles and puffiness seem to disappear. The technique has taken hold in our industry and is now big business in Hollywood and New York . Airbrush makeup is being used on the most all television shows, and Jay Leno. Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lopez, former President Clinton and former Vice President Al Gore are also touting the excellent results achieved from airbrushed makeup! As more TV stations switch to HDTV their makeup departments will have to make the switch to airbrush makeup.

through, giving a natural appearance. Men also love it because it is so lightweight that they don’t feel like they are wearing makeup. Advantages to being airbrushed • No other makeup applies as finely and evenly. • Easily conceals blemishes and imperfections. • Leaves your complexion looking radiantly soft and natural • Won’t Run or Fade. Lasts up to 18 hours. • Gives a flawless look even in high definition!

The airbrush sprays tiny dots or pixels of makeup at a low psi through a compressor. Going on, it feels like a soft whisper of air. It dries to a matte finish on contact with the skin and is water-resistant. The tiny pixels of foundation give the same effect as what the digital camera sees. This why less is more is so important with todays digital photography. The old rules of wearing more makeup for the camera no longer apply. With everything so high-tech the camera sees exactly what you see in person and more. A person’s own skin tone comes Lynn is a professional makeup artist who’s work has been recognized internationally. She has been considered the leading authority locally in bridal makeup for 20 years . She can be reached at 413-564-6994 www.weddingsourcebook.com

Style or Comfort... You Have To Have Wedding Shoes! Wedding shoes are probably one of the least thought about items, when it comes to everything else involved in a wedding. A bride’s main concern is just finding a great dress to wear. Shoes are probably the least noticed thing about your attire at a wedding. But, of course like every other little thing, they are really important to completing your look. If you want to be comfortable, it is of great importance to find a comfortable and stylish shoe. You want to think about the height of heel you want and the comfort of your shoe when you are out shopping for wedding shoes. The easiest to match anything would be an elegant pair of clear shoes. Most clear shoes have some type of detail on them, usually with rhinestones, that can give you that extra touch and will compliment your dress. Some brides just get their wedding shoes dyed to match their gown. This can save you going through a lot of trouble finding the exact color shoes. You can make this easy by looking at whatever shoes your bridal shop has that you bought your dress at. Most full service bridal salons have a number of shoe styles to compliment just about anything they have.

22 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

If you get wedding shoes that have a high heel, make sure you take some time to break them in. This is extremely important for anyone who is not used to wearing high heels. Take them out a couple days of the week and wear them around the house for

a couple of hours. You don’t want to stress about falling or walking awkwardly down the aisle. No matter how beautiful your wedding shoes may be, if you are not use to walking in them, you and your poor feet will end up miserable. Comfort is key no matter how much you spend. If you’re not able to walk gracefully, it’s just not going to work. If those $400 shoes are killing your feet when you try them on in the store, then leave them there. But you also don’t have to spend $400 on wedding shoes to find comfort. There is a large market of bridal shoes, that range from stilettos to a basic pump, to kitten heels and open an closed toes. So, there is a style for every bride. Start looking at the bridal shop where you purchased your gown. If they don’t have what you’re looking for, move on to department stores and speciality stores. You can also find just about anything online, but we would suggest you read the return policy if you do not like what you’ve ordered. It could actually cost you more in the long run ordering online. You want to really enjoy your wedding and purchasing the right shoe that is comfortable is the most important part. Why suffer just for style? You should have comfort and style together!
